The Burma Spring: Aung San Suu Kyi and the New Struggle for the Soul of a Nation, by Rena Pederson

Aung San Suu Kyi―Burma's "woman of destiny” and one of the most admired voices for freedom in the world today―comes alive through this brilliant rendering of Burma's tumultuous history

Award-winning journalist and former State Department speechwriter Rena Pederson brings to light fresh details about the charismatic Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi: the inspiration for Burma’s (now Myanmar) first steps towards democracy. Suu Kyi's party will be a major contender in the 2015 elections, a revolutionary breakthrough after years of military dictatorship. Using exclusive interviews with Suu Kyi since her release from fifteen years of house arrest, as well as recently disclosed diplomatic cables, Pederson uncovers new facets to Suu Kyi’s extraordinary story.

The Burma Spring will also surprise readers by revealing the extraordinary steps taken by First Lady Laura Bush to help Suu Kyi, and also how former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton injected new momentum into Burma’s democratic rebirth. Pederson provides a never before seen view of the harrowing hardships the people of Burma have endured and the fiery political atmosphere in which Suu Kyi’s has fought a life-and-death struggle for liberty in this fascinating part of the world.

Review
“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is one of the towering figures of our age: a tireless champion of democracy, freedom and reconciliation. Rena Pederson captures Suu Kyi as few others have, producing a vivid account of the life of this remarkable woman. The Burma Spring is a valuable resource for anyone interested in contemporary Burma.” (Senator Mitch McConnell)

“Journalist Pederson delivers a penetrating portrait of Aung San Suu Kyi, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner and leader of the Burmese National League for Democracy party, in a thoughtful biography that reveals the ‘moody, temperamental’ side of its charismatic and visionary subject.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Pederson evokes the quiet, stubborn dignity of this rather improbable political icon. She draws a deeply nuanced portrait of the enigmatic, inspiring leader.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“The riveting story of Suu Kyi’s brutal imprisonment, deplorable maltreatment, astonishing inner strength, and ultimate survival is told with a historian’s appreciation for context and circumstance by journalist and former State Department speechwriter Pederson in a complex and sweeping history of Burma’s centuries-old struggle to maintain a closed society, yet manifest its power on a global scale.” (Booklist (starred review))

“Impressively researched and compellingly written, Rena Pederson has woven together the epic journey of Aung San Suu Kyi with the turbulent story of her country, Burma, in a fascinating and inspiring way.” (Benedict Rogers, human rights activist and author of BURMA: A Nation at the Crossroads)

“Writing a biography of a living legend is never easy, especially when the living legend is legendarily inaccessible. Rena Pederson has managed to break through the difficulties to publish a thick, fascinating biography. Pederson’s book is as much a biography of Burma as it is a biography of a courageous, charismatic woman who has risked her life to end the dark ages through political activism. An important book.” (The Dallas Morning News)

“A compelling story deserving of greater international recognition. Recommended for readers of international affairs, world politics, and democracy movements.” (Library Journal)

“An ambitious and necessary work. An illuminating dossier about a heroic woman and a nation walking, slowly, toward a freer land.” (The Cleveland Plain Dealer)

This is the source
By Joann Byrd
“The Burma Spring” is an instant must-read resource for all things Aung San Suu Kyi and Myanmar.
In her new book, Journalist Rena Pederson offers the whole range of what we should know—from how to pronounce the Nobel laureate’s name to why Suu Kyi’s battle for democracy and freedom in Burma still isn’t over.
Pederson takes her readers along on multiple reporting trips and draws on interviews with experts, authorities, followers, enemies and observers of Suu Kyi. Pederson’s journalistic chops are obvious, too, in the original sources, books and documents that result in the expanse and credibility of this 535-page report.
We are there for a frightening massacre and for the pronouncements of the men who imprisoned Suu Kyi or now resist her party. “The Burma Spring” constantly provides the national and global context for Suu Kyi’s struggle--right up to 2015.
And all of this substance is delivered in an accessible, conversational tone.
Significantly, the other news we take from Pederson’s sophisticated work is that Aung San Suu Kyi is more than inspiration, complicated beyond icon. Through years of Suu Kyi’s observations and actions, her long separation from her husband and sons, even the trademark flowers in her hair, Pederson has illuminated a human being.

Admiral book worth reading
By Em Perdue
The biography is accessible and conversational in tone and includes information as well as explanations I've read no place else. However, by the time it got close to the end of the more than 500 pages I had a time staying with it. There was too much about Laura Bush and not enough about ASSK's current thoughts. I would have liked more about her thoughts on the upcoming elections and the refugee issues.

An interesting and meticulously well documented book which covers modern Burmese history and focuses on democracy advocate and Nobel prize winner Daw Ang Dan Suu Kyi (ASSK).

The book does a good job of describing how the corruption and brutality of Burma’s military government has hurt the Burmese people and made them amongst the poorest and most repressed in the world. The authors’ descriptions of ASSK’s and her NLD party’s struggles, sacrifices, and courage as they continue to fight for democracy in Burma are nothing short of inspirational.

While I found this to be one of the better books on modern Burma, I believe that the author tried to cover too much ground and, in some places, veered off of her main theme. Additionally, I thought the biographical descriptions in the first half of the book were a bit too sympathetic, and did not read like an investigative journalist wrote them.

I found the last 100 pages of the book to be particularly interesting. In this section the author discusses ASSK’s attempts to navigate her political party into the next election, criticism of her tactics by U.S. officials such as Senator Jim Webb, her position on recent Buddhist & Muslim violence, and the future of the NLD political party. I would have preferred to read more about these issues and less on some of the more peripheral items.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the struggle for democracy in modern Burma, and the contributions that Daw Ang Dan Suu Kyi and the NLD party have made towards this goal.
