Sin, Shame & Secrets: A True Story of the Murder of a Nun, the Conviction of a Priest, and the Cover-up in the Catholic Church, by David Y

This true crime book tells the story of the murder of an elderly nun in a hospital chapel on Holy Saturday 1980; the cover-up involving police and the church, and the arrest by cold-case detectives 24 years later of a Catholic priest. Police believe the nun was the victim of a ritual killing. Father Gerald Robinson was convicted of murder in a trial that shocked a city, a church and a nation. He was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison and died in a prison hospice in 2014.
"Sin, Shame & Secrets" unveils how cold-case investigators decided to reopen the case in 2003 after a Toledo nun testified that Father Robinson had abused her in satanic rituals when she was a child.

Review
"An explosive piece of investigative journalism." - Mitch Weiss, Pulitzer Prize winning reporter

"This is not just another murder mystery. It is a true story that enrages, mystifies and terrifies any reader with even a modicum of moral awareness." - Father Thomas Doyle, J.C.D., C.A.D.C.

"This is a murder case for the ages: the ritual slaying of a nun by a priest in a chapel... This work is a primer on the power of the church in concealing its worst secrets." - Michael D. Sallah, Pulitzer Prize winner

Very rarely does a single incident grip the public conscience. The brutal and sacrilegious murder of a true innocent, Sister Margaret Ann Pahl, does just that. ... Yonke describes not only the search for a killer, but the struggle for all of us, including both the Toledo police and the Catholic church, to accept that evil exists everywhere around us, even within the house of God." - Nancy Grace, TV talk show host

"David Yonke presents and analyzes a stunning case of physical, emotional, and sexual pain... This work provides valuable insight and raises troubling questions about the institutional church and its hierarchy that go far beyond one nun, priest, and diocese in Ohio." - Barbara Blaine, founder of SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests)

From the Author
This was a tough book to write, a tough story to tell. In my decades as a journalist for daily print and digital media, I've never seen a story that is as shocking or compelling. But getting the information was challenging, especially because the church does not have to comply with freedom of information requests. Thanks to a network of sources, and following up on the evidence presented at trial, I was able to uncover the whole story. I think you will find the truth to be fascinating, unforgettable and disturbing.

About the Author
David Yonke is a veteran, award-winning journalist based in Toledo, Ohio. He grew up in New York and Florida, graduated from Duke University, and has been writing news stories ever since. Since 2000, Yonke has been a full-time religion journalist, writing news and feature stories on all matters of faith, spirituality, belief and religion. This led to his covering the unique case of Father Gerald Robinson, a Toledo Catholic priest arrested in 2004 by cold-case detectives for the 1980 ritual murder of Sister Margaret Ann Pahl. Yonke started covering the Robinson case the day after the priest's arrest, attended every minute of the trial, and followed up with ongoing coverage of the legal appeals and other developments. It is the only time in U.S. history that a Catholic priest has been convicted of murdering a Catholic nun. And police believe the nun was the victim of a ritual killing. Although Robinson lost his appeals to the Ohio Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court, debate and controversy continue to swirl around this case as alternative theories surface of what might have actually happened that Holy Saturday morning, 1980. Robinson died in prison on July 4, 2014. Putting the case to rest. But the interest and debate continue. Yonke is the founder and editor of the nonsectarian, nonprofit religion news site Toledo Faith & Values (ToledoFAVS.com). He also runs a freelance writing, editing and consulting company, Writeminded.media. He and his wife, Janet, have three grown daughters and live near Toledo, Ohio.

Sin, Shame and Secrets is a book that you will be unable to put down.

David Yonke starts this story from its beginning in April 1980. In gripping and almost excruciating detail, he describes the choking and brutal stabbing of Sr. Margaret Ann Pahl. Yonke tells the emotional story of how the sisters from her religious community found Sr. Margaret's body in the chapel of the Mercy Hospital, as well as the vain attempts of emergency room physicians and nurses to revive her. He describes the early efforts of Toledo police detectives to identify and investigate Sr. Margaret's murder only to be thwarted by their police superior when leads point to catholic priest and hospital chaplain Fr. Gerald Robinson as the primary suspect.

But perhaps what David Yonke describes best is the context in which the killer of a nun could escape justice for more than 20 years. Sin, Shame and Secrets discusses how catholic priests in northwestern Ohio's Toledo catholic diocese enjoyed protection from not only the catholic hierarchy, but also from local law enforcement. Yonke describes how those protections enabled crimes like sexual abuse and in this case even murder to escape punishment until courageous victims of their crimes and their advocates from the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) begin speaking and demanding justice.

Sin, Shame and Secrets also provides a firsthand account of the trial of the State of Ohio v. Gerald Robinson. By attending the trial from it's first day until the verdict is read, Yonke gives a perspective that belongs to a juror with the pen of a journalist. Sin, Shame and Secrets also gives details that even jurors wouldn't know. Yonke discusses what was found in a search of Robinson's home, as well as what was discovered when police executed a 2004 search warrant on Toledo diocesan headquarters. The police officers' discovery of secret files on how law enforcement favoritism and even abortions covered up priestly crimes of sexual abuse of women and minors will leave your head spinning. Sin, Shame and Secrets is as good as it is troubling. I read it in three days and then read it again. You will not be able to put this book down.

Riveting Read
By Denise L. Meyer
I just finished reading this book, and I found it completely fascinating and very well-balanced. I appreciated being able to draw my own conclusions based on Yonke's straightforward recitation of the facts and events. One section in particular made me gasp and shout out in shock. Until that moment, I had had doubts about the case against the priest and some of the accusations by women who claimed Satanic abuse at his hands. But one interview conducted by the author with an accused abuser and associate of the priest's described in the man's own words behavior that rocked me to my core. The novel and that chapter in particular provided a glimpse of true evil that I never would have thought could exist within a religious community. Don't expect clear-cut answers, but do expect a riveting read. I had trouble getting past the occasional proofreading error, but that is the only thing that kept this from being a 5-star book. Very well done.

this is the best. I'm a lifelong resident of Toledo
By Sandy Pirwitz
Of the many books written about this horrific crime, in my opinion, this is the best. I'm a lifelong resident of Toledo, OH, where the crime occurred, and I was a nurse in another Catholic hospital at the time and will never forget that day. Yonke knew Toledo and its politics only too well, as he was the Religion Editor for the local newspaper. He depicted the city and both the religious and political atmospheres at the time very well. The author spoke at a public forum and even after the priest's conviction and incarceration, those faithful who were unhappy with the outcome were still visibly angry and quite vocal. Great, great read.
