Kings over the Water: The saga of the Stuart pretenders, by Theo Aronson

Of all royal lost causes, none has a stronger fascination than that of the Stuart Pretenders to the British throne. For well over a century, four successive Stuart kings laid claim to the crown. The first was James II, deposed in 1688 by his daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange; then came James III (the Old Pretender) and his son, Charles III (Bonnie Prince Charlie — the Young Pretender); finally, there was Henry IX (the Cardinal King) who died in 1807, the last descendant in direct and legitimate line from James II. This book tells the story of these four men, and of their families.

Although it gives a graphic account of the '45 and other Jacobite uprisings and explains the background to political events, it is, first and foremost, a biographical portrait of the exiled Stuarts. It is an account of their public and private lives, their personalities, their relationships with others, and the extraordinary hold which they never ceased to exercise over their adherents. It is a book about people; a book about the twilight of one of the world's most romantic, colourful and ill-fated dynasties.

The fascinating, often bizarre, story of the ‘kings over the water’ is ideally suited to Theo Aronson's exceptional talents, and especially his ability to bring his subjects vividly to life and to make clear the labyrinthine relationships of European royalty. His reputation as an historian, based on such books as The Kaisers, A Family of Kings and Grandmama of Europe, is deservedly high. Of his most recent study, Victoria and Disraeli, C. P. Snow wrote: 'It is bright with intelligence and human wisdom.'

The best book on the Jacobite Kings I ever read.
By World Wide Wanderer
I have read many books on this subject and this is by far the best. It describes all the exiled Jacobite Kings from James II to Henry IX in great detail. It discusses their way of life, their personalities and their motivations. It gives details of all the people that had an efect on their lives and fills out the individuals by telling us of their real characters. All this in an approachable easy read. If you have any interest in these Kings at all, then this book is a must.

By Gail Heather
The book is a surprisingly honest account of the flawed decisions and resultant tribulations incurred by James II and his heirs. It seems the Stuarts should have been able to regain their throne, but they managed to misplay every winning hand of cards they were dealt. Quite a sobering, cautionary tale!.

Want to understand history's hidden stories? Read Theo!
By Justin J.M. Higner
A great many tales have been spun about the exiled Stuart 'Kings over the Water', so called because each pretender to the throne of Great Britain (ousted on many accounts but chiefly because of James II's uncompromising Catholicism), had been kept in continental Europe. For a myriad of Geo-political reasons, the four men spoken of here (James II, James III, and 'Bonnie Prince Charley' Charles III-and their consorts and often colorful associates, spend much of their time wandering about the continent--from France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland, and Poland-- looking, perhaps in vein, for someone to properly endorse their righteous cause top be reinstalled, as a dynasty, upon the throne of Britain now held (until the mid 1800s) by the German Hanoverians (distantly related by marriage to the Stuarts). One learns of the nearly futile attempts to invade the British Isles and antagonize rebellions that often got confused or led astray-despite the Stuarts enduring yet vexing popularity in post-Cromwell Britain. Misunderstandings, lack of money, trained troops, and unreliable 'leaders'--not to mention constant bad weather per most attempts, unify the theme of divine bad luck for this family, who ultimately marries and fades into the royal houses of Bavaria and Liechtenstein. It is a story stretching from the 1680s to the early 1800s, during which time the government and constitutional/parliamentary monarchy of Great Britain formed to it's full flower--a model for the world to see, verses the slow-die-off of one of the world's great yet most unfortunate families. it is a story of many missteps and lost opportunities that might have changed the world as we know it. As usual, Theo Aronson tells us of the personal lives of these individuals, in the end making us understand how human each of them--from prince to pauper-they all finally were, and the overall inescapable romance of this ultimate of lost causes.
