"OC"--" on credit."
By Grady Harp
British author Bernard Sinniah has composed a memoir/diary of short stories and recollections from his time in a boarding school at a boarding school at St. John's College in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Now a resident of Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, in the United Kingdom he reflects and shares those life molding moments in JAFFNA BOY, surprisingly his first book! As we learn at book's end, Part of the sales proceeds of this book will be donated to Serendib Charitable Trust, a charity that is helping to rebuild Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind at Kaithaddy, Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
Bernard has a heartwarming manner in which he writes his experiences as a student. In his opening chapter he states, `As a student from this prestigious school, St. John's College, Jaffna, I was, simply put, a massive failure. I was not going to be a doctor or an engineer, or even enter the university with my A-level results. It was all too much for the five minutes, and my thought was to get out of the hall quickly. I walked out as if I had done very well. I gave the impression that I was sure to get an A, but I knew what my classmates thought of me. They knew that I was not a great student. Still, it was an amazing feeling. I didn't have to study anymore.' `I had been a hostel boy for ten years from the age of eight and a half, and this had been my home-- perhaps my first. I loved it. I enjoyed every minute of it. Now, I had thirty minutes to get out of the way. I kept my emotions to myself, cracked a few jokes with my friends, and was ready to go. One by one, everyone was going home. I was getting very emotional.' And from this farewell chapter Bernard takes us back to his early days at St. John's College in 1968 and brings us through his ups and downs of this boarding school days and life changes.
In many ways this novel is a coming of age story with a Sri Lankan twist. The flavors and scents and the politics and struggles are so well delivered that we, the reader, know Bernard Sinniah well by the end of this well crafted novel. For those who love coming of age stories from a different angle, JAFFNA BOY will please. Grady Harp, February 15

Brilliant work on school life in Pre War Jaffna!
By Priyanka Mendis
The setting of Bernard Sinniah’s “Jaffna Boy” is Jaffna, Sri Lanka of the 1970s before the ravages of war. An era when a 10 year old’s biggest concern was how to avoid doing his homework… rather than how to avoid being recruited into a militant movement.
An era when a school master could give a beating to a naughty boy - ‘to teach him a lesson’ or even out of exasperation…. without the boy’s parents demanding an explanation from the master and not the child!
An era when kids had time to play – had the freedom to go anywhere (well almost;) as long as they were back at a specified time…. rather than the constant mobile-remote-control and monitoring that they are subjected today.
Sinniah does not overtly refer to any of these social elements but writes his autobiography skillfully portraying the absolute beauty and joy of life in his boarding school. A life of fun and friendship, where there are rules (to be broken) and you are disciplined (only if you are caught). There is emotion in this story where hopes and dreams are achieved and sometimes shattered. These episodes often resonate with childhood memories of older readers or clash in contrast to the childhood memories of younger readers.
The courage to pick oneself up – however crazy the situation may be - to shake the dust off and continue enjoying the journey is what keeps this book alive! The way these values and formation of character has impacted the author’s adult life and taken him to the helm of his chosen profession is probably another story – yet to be written and fully worth reading.
Needless to say anyone remotely connected with Jaffna and St. Johns’ College – before, during or after the war - will find it even more engaging.
Highly recommended for kids of the 90s and after as it gives an authentic feel for life in Jaffna before the war changed it all.
