About the Author
I graduated from Cornell University, the most majestic campus of the Ivy League. It's where I was first devastated by love and therefore the most obvious setting for my first tale of mystery, treachery, false imprisonment, and near death. Love in the Time of Cocaine is based on my real life experience and those who lived it with me know how much of myself I have actually chosen to expose. After Cornell, I attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine where I received a partial scholarship. Pursuing Emergency Medicine has only added steeper slopes to life's already steep rollercoaster rides. At work, I encounter exhilirating moments of yanking people away from the grips of death. I practice medicine in the State of NJ. As a student of Buddhism for the past ten years I have found tranquility in my life. It's the path to peace and joy arising from within, despite an external world fraught with rip currents swirling relentlessly at high velocities.

Engaging and Fun Read

Love in the Time of Cocaine follows the passionate and tumultuous relationship between Luis, a young man of Columbian descent born in America, and Pamela, a beautiful young woman from Columbia. When tragedy strikes early in their relationship on the ominously beautiful campus of Cornell University, it sends the protagonist into an exploration of a very dark side of Columbia’s history, both past and present. As Luis attempts to uncover what has happened to his love, he is pushed far beyond his comfortable life in New York and is forced to grapple with an ugly side of Pamela’s life. As the plot progresses, it changes perspectives from one character to the next, traveling non-linearly through time and throughout different settings. Slowly, the writer divulges more and more about each character’s motives and pasts and sheds more light on the events transpiring around Luis and Pamela.
The author creates an engaging and fast-paced text that I found myself thinking about after I had to put the book down—a sure sign for me that I am enjoying the novel. It is a relatively quick read, but it engages the reader enough to make it worth the time. I also found it intriguing that the story is based on real events, and it offered a thought-provoking look into the Columbian drug cartels and life in Columbia.
Although I enjoyed this novel overall, I cannot say I absolutely loved this book simply because some of the characterization and descriptions were cringe-worthy. Some of the characters were well developed and interesting, but some were less so. The descriptions of more minor characters made me chuckle to myself a few times because they almost sounded like satirical characters from a goofy detective novel. There were also a few scenes, especially the more intimate scenes, that I thought overdid it a bit and used awkward language that took away from the story.
I would recommend this book to someone looking for a fun, quick read who is not a huge stickler for perfectly crafted prose. If you can look past some of the more corny moments of the novel, it is an engaging read made more interesting through the reality behind the events.

In the tradition of the great, dark, coming of age novels like Lord of the Flies and a Separate Peace comes Love in the Time of Cocaine by Alvaro Alban MD. A thinly veiled autobiography by this first time author, the novel begs the philosophic question, “Does true love necessarily have a tragic ending?”
The story is engaging and well-written with simile-laden descriptions bathed with insight, and at times, humor. The narrative answers all the questions raised by the reader in this suspenseful yarn that basically takes place in New York and Columbia.
The non-linear plot features Cornell students Luis Valdez, a first generation Columbian-American, Pamela Jimenez, a voluptuous beauty and Columbian immigrant, Brian Bernstein, an overachieving doctor's son and the voice of reason, Chad Heytow, a womanizing adolescent, and Harvey Orloff, a lecherous buffoon.
The book starts with the tender romance of Luis and Pamela which serves as the tome's fulcrum. Brian, Chad and Harvey bear witness to their growing relationship. To go any further would spoil the fun of reading it. This page turner has the reader looking forward to the author's sophomore effort.
