Catching Shrimp with Bare Hands is the true story of Luong La, a boy growing up in the Mekong Delta in the midst of the Vietnam War. When the 1968 Tet Offensive forces Luong's family to flee the countryside, his mother continues to travel back and forth to their island farm despite threats from the Viet Cong and nearby firefights.
Out on their farm in the middle of the Mekong River, Luong wants to catch fish and slingshot birds, but Viet Cong, called mysterious misters by the villagers, stop by his family's hut and stay. "The frog dies because of its big mouth," his mother warns. The mysterious misters behead a neighbor, and Luong's aunt goes missing.
Luong plans to join the Army as soon as he's old enough to fight, but the war ends before he has a chance. Communism descends, pulling him back in time to a land without electricity or fuel where his family has to hide the books that haven't already been burned. Propaganda that "kneads their skulls," neighbors spying on each other, and the threat of starvation drive Luong to escalating acts of defiance. About to get caught by the authorities, he drops out of school to help his family build a boat to escape.

Review
"...an exquisitely researched and finely tuned memoir....Michelle has an uncanny gift for seeing the world right through the eyes of a bright kid....Her narrative never tries to 'sound' like a child, she simply is the kid....a tender but realistic look at life in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War and communist conquest..." -Montecito Journal
"Alternately hopeful and sometimes heartbreaking, Michelle Robin La's comprehensive 487-page debut is based on her husband's childhood in his native country during and after the Vietnam War. Mostly memoir, the story centers on Mr. La but also includes his mother, Ro Thi Le, his father, Chan La, along with nine siblings as they try to survive a war that moves them from place to place while threatening to break them and their country apart." -Santa Barbara News-Press
"While sad at times and occasionally horrific, overall the story is one of resilience and inspiration and adds to a growing counter-narrative of Vietnamese-Americans as courageous survivors, not victims." -SV1World.com
"All this adds to [Michelle] Robin La as a good writer and the book as a good read."-Noozhawk

A captivating memoir
By 4Joy
Catching Shrimp is a captivating memoir that drops you into 1968 Vietnam and the tragedy of war. We follow brave Luong through his youthful adventures in the Mekong Delta amidst superstitions, traditions, hunger, mosquitoes, and the endless struggle to farm the land. Luong navigates through bombs and gunfire and interacts boldly with soldiers from both sides.
Despite losing the war and enduring the communist takeover, Luong stays true to his ideals. While the landscape of war is stark, his many adventures are endearing and include laugh-out-loud moments. This haunting memoir pulls the reader back for more.

A haunting story- hard to forget
By bookworm
The author does a great job telling this true story through the eyes of a young boy. His story begins in the midst of turmoil- his tranquil life growing up in the Vietnamese countryside is overturned by the Vietnam war. What makes this book special is the colorful details of Vietnam- you feel as though you are there as you read the descriptions. Although the story is at times dark and shocking with the horrors of human cruelty, there is humor throughout as well. The memorable characters and their relationships as they face great hardships is what makes this memoir really powerful. The boy, Luong is like a Vietnamese Huck Finn, telling his story in a spare, straightforward style- seeing with clarity the craziness of war and the often hypocritical adult world. His story is one of coming of age in a violent and dangerous world- he struggles with feelings of helplessness and rage, but his story is ultimately inspirational and is the kind of narrative that is hard to forget.

The Tom Sawyer of Vietnam
By Dr. David J. Liu
Through the eyes of a little boy we saw the idyllic life of a small town on the Mekong River and the bubbling fear over the invading Vietcong. As the boy grew up, the intimidation and brutality gradually became part of the life. Determined to escape, the family took a risk in pursuit of freedom.
The author masterfully blended the suspenseful journey of Luong's family with the rich culture of Vietnam against the backdrop of the war. From time to time we feel as if we were there with Luong, in the living room, in the cabin on the small island, and in the schoolyard planning the next action of defiance, which brings smiles and lightens the moment.
To sum it up, this is the Tom Sawyer of Vietnam.
