Andrew Marshall is a Pentagon legend. For more than four decades he has served as Director of the Office of Net Assessment, the Pentagon’s internal think tank, under twelve defense secretaries and eight administrations. About the Author
Andrew Krepinevich is president of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA) and the author of several books on military history and strategy, including 7 Deadly Scenarios: A Military Futurist Explores War in the Twenty-First Century and The Army and Vietnam. He lives in Leesburg, Virginia.
Barry Watts has been a senior fellow at CSBA since 2002, when he left the Pentagon as the Director of Program Analysis and Evaluation. He too has written extensively on military history and strategy, including Clausewitzian Friction and Future War. He lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

"The greatest generals are the ones you never heard of."

Engrossing saga of the engineer of the "winning" of the cold war.
I have not yet finished reading the book. To some extent it is frustrating because most of Marshall's work is still classified and can only be referred to in general terms. Marshall's coworkers at RAND & DOE are/were truly the best and the brightest American thinkers in intercountry competition, organizational & bureocratic behavior and military/industrial planning. Henry Kissinger comes in for a mention that that includes what some might consider excessively mild criticism.
One of Marshall's sugnificant cotributiins was to change comparitive military analysis from "winning battles" to "discouraging the initiation of war." You may very well be alive today because of the success of his efforts.
This is a well written story of a largely invisible deep thinker who profoundly changed geopolitics.

The Pentagon's Intellectual North Star

Andrew Marshall served as the thoughtful, level-headed intellectual coach for a generation of national security scholars and leaders. Among his closest friends were such insightful and inspiring philosopher-statesmen as Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger, Albert Wohlstetter, Herman Kahn, Thomas Schelling, Henry Rowen and Charles Wolf. Andrew Marshall has the rare knack of surveying a confused geopolitical and cultural landscape and identifying where the plates of future tectonic upheaval lie. He is far-seeing, quietly patriotic, scientifically skeptical, even-handed and democratic. That is, he is approachable, non-judgmental, quiet and fun.
With open curiosity and a quiet listening style, he will engage anyone in serious discussion. Yet Andrew has this funny giggle, especially when the irony of an argument or a policy position is apparent. He is apt to begin chuckling a second before the rest of us get it. Rarely does he allow himself to reveal his own beliefs; he is more interested in what others have to say, and whether they have done their homework. Papers and books reached to the ceiling in his modest Pentagon office. Halfway through any conversation, he would get up and somehow lay his hands on some treatise that related to what his visitor was saying.
Eleven successive Secretaries of Defense, as managers, intuitively recognized his value as the Pentagon's intellectual guiding North Star. His counsel, easy personal style and vision will be missed.
It is not apparent that he can be replaced. His biographer, Andy Krepinevich, deserves consideration. Andy has the right personality and intellectual curiosity. Perhaps Ash Carter will continue the Marshall legacy by appointing another Andy.

Three books in one?

What surprised me the most about The Last Warrior is how comprehensively it covers the whole Cold War, then continues until the Pivot in 2012. The authors' have under-claimed the scope of their study which is more than Andy Marshall, but extends to include a series of case studies of policy conflict and the origins of new ideas. They often lament and list specific examples how Andy Marshall was left out or his advice not heeded. They show also how he frequently empowered others to fight policy battles that he himself did not directly enter. So, we have a biography of a fascinating player and the entire Cold War, plus background on the origins of the "rebalance" to Asia and President Obama's pivot in 2011.
