This true story splashed all over the news on November 21, 2004. A deer hunter shot eight and killed six other deer hunters including a young woman. In the Blue Hills east of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Chai Soua Vang―caught trespassing on private property and occupying another hunter's tree stand―became infuriated and exploded into a rampage after being tongue-lashed by the property owner. Anguished over marital and financial woes, exhausted by working two full-time jobs, and possessed of a quick temper, Vang carried a heavy load of anger―he was walking dynamite. Because the shooter was Hmong and the victims were white, the media reported this as racial. In actuality, race played a minor role. Cultural differences, private property rights, and a personality clash created a gripping drama. Containing information not previously known to the public, the book illuminates, in easy-to-read story format, the backgrounds of those involved, the anger-filled and heart-wrenching incident, the exemplary trial―and answers the critical question of who shot first.

About the Author
A deer hunter in the Blue Hills for 25 years, Whitehurst and his hunting buddies became aware of trouble when three ambulances screamed through the woods followed shortly by a surveillance airplane at tree-top level. He interviewed numerous individuals related to the incident, attended the trial, and studied over 1,600 pages of police reports. He and his wife, Mary, have four adult children and 11 grandchildren.

For the uninitiated this gave a wonderful insight to the atmosphere that prevailed

I am not an outdoor sportsman and not a deer hunter. “Tree Stand Murders” proved to be very interesting and informative. First, it developed the background of the Hmong people and their displacement following the Vietnam War. While it was not immediately apparent, this cultural difference of the Hmong people proved to be a significant factor in the recitation of the events that unfolded later in the book. Second, it told of the very collegial atmosphere that surrounds the annual deer hunting season was fully exposed. For the uninitiated this gave a wonderful insight to the atmosphere that prevailed. The author brought his own firsthand experiences in to play. It is very difficult for me to generate empathy for Chai Vang as the trial proceeded. Vang’s own apology was to the shame he felt he brought on his family and the Hmong community at large, and not to the victim’s families. “Tree Stand Murders” represents a thorough well-written documentation of both the event and the subsequent trial. David Whitehurst has been meticulous in developing the full story surrounding this unfortunate event.

The Rest of the Story

This is an excellent account of something that happened essentially in my back yard - something to which the local and state media gave the expected coverage through the expected soft-focus, yet sensationalist, lens. Whitehurst tells the rest of the story. While the sensation-seeking media not so subtly presented the story in a racial context, the author, though not shying away from that aspect, tells it in-depth, taking the time to explore some of the racial, as well as other, dynamics that led to this tragedy in the north woods.
The "Save a Deer; kill a Hmong" bumper stickers were very real and very visible and prolific around northern Wisconsin during the immediate aftermath of these murders and through and beyond the subsequent legal proceedings. Some men with whom I worked (bridge construction) were acquainted with members of the afflicted hunting party, including most of the victims. If my colleagues' attitudes toward the Hmong culture, compounded with the inherent territoriality and foul-mouthed confrontational demeanor of landowner/hunters in general in this neck of the woods, were representative of the victims' hunting party, there was plenty of blame to go around for what happened. None of this, of course, would excuse the homicidal behavior of Mr. Vang or anybody else. But it sure goes a long way toward explaining how a man who had been combat trained in the jungles of southeast Asia, not to mention likely suffering some PTSD, and acutely sensitive to racial tensions, could be pushed over the edge in an armed encounter. In the course of their bluffing, confrontational behavior, the Wisconsin redneck hunters didn't consider this. They should have. Thanks to Mr. Whitehurst for telling this aspect of the story.

Excellent

A tragic story but well worth reading. I learned so much about Hmong and hunting and Northern Wisconsin. The author has done his research and tells the heart breaking story with compassion. Great writing!
