When Spanish forces retook the colony in the 1690s, freedom proved short-lived. But the revolt stands as a vitally important yet neglected historical landmark: the only significant reversal of European expansion by Native American people in the New World.

One of the few temporary sucess for the Indians......

A very interesting book on a rare event where the Indians actually drove out their white conquerors from a long established colony. In 1680, the Pueblo Indians of northern New Mexico rose up in massive revolt against their Spanish overlords and managed for a short time, to regained their independence from colonial rule. This revolt came after nearly four generations of colonial rule where continued Spanish misrule generated this revolt.

The book proves to be well written and researched as the author explained how this revolt came to be. According to the author, much of for the revolt had to do with the following factors. Rejection of Christianity, economic dependency on the white, inter-racial marriages between whites and Indians and how that reflects on the fact that small numbers of Europeans were controlling larger numbers of Indians. In four generations, many of the Spanish colonialists have intermarried with the local Indians, blurring the racial lines. White intimidation fades as the conqerors and the conquered blended in.

The book proves to be a short read but it turned out to be very informative and rather an eye-opener. Spanish did managed to reconquered New Mexico once more in the 1690s, never again were the Indians sucessful in pushing out their European overlords which have been in place for generations. (It would be like if the 1862 Dakota Indian Revolt in Minnesota were successful!) The book come highly recommended for those interested in western colonial history.

This book concerns a topic of the Spanish Borderlands settlement from a period of the mid 1500's on to the year 1680, year of the revolt by the Pueblo peoples. The author gives his best effort to present some history both before and after this revolt.

The area covered in this study is pretty much New Mexico where by the year 1601 there were approximately 250 settlers, while the indignant tribes numbered in the thousands. Most of the settlers did not reside within the Pueblos. All the settlements were completely ringed by Indians (Jicarilla, Mesacalero, Chiricahua, and Navajo) and suffered from both raiding parties to war parties. The settlements were desired by higher authorities in both of the power centers of that time: Mexico City and Madrid. The reasons included a desire for added wealth for the king and empire, a desire to convert the native tribes to Catholicism, and the looking for a South Sea harbor to the west, among others. These settlements were at best "unfortunate" colonies containing very dissatisfied settlers.

The reasons why the Spanish desired to settle New Mexico have been stated above, however, this is what the settlers found: Scant resources, sandy land lacking both wood and water, no pastures, land both colder and hotter than they were used to, few minerals, and no gold or silver. Many settlers arrived poor expecting to better their condition but remained even poorer after years of settlement. Just feeding and clothing oneself was a challenge. Near impossible to rely on Pueblo for help as the native peoples had the similar problems obtaining food and clothing.

Even by 1607 the governor and captain general at San Juan guessed the number of Christian converts at no more than 600 people, and that was probably a generous estimate. Most Indians, especially due to the Spanish heavy handed mistreatment, 'scorned' baptism and remained increasingly hostile. The Spaniards were always outnumbered and the eventual hostility of the Pueblos not only worked against them but increasingly led to massacres and the final revolt.

As one reviewer stated, possibly other books are equally well worth reading, yet this book is written well and assembled in a manner that allows a serious reader to come away with an understanding of the factors behind this revolt by the Pueblos in the year 1680.

Recommended for the interested Spanish Borderland readers concerned with the history of New Mexico that eventually led to the revolt of 1680 chasing the hated Spanish overseers out for many years.

Knowledge is a precious thing

I like to get my hands on books about US's presidency history. Just to broaden my own comprehension of US's history.
Even if there are some factuals errors, and some passages are repetitive, this is one fine book. Every president has his own background, achivements, decisions, errors and legacy resume in 20 pages or so. That way, you can read the 800 pages volume at a leisurely pace.
Every First Lady has her own 3 or 4 pages, so that you can judge what was their influence in the thought process of the President.
Also very relevant are many inserts about events or individuals who had a direct impact on the Presidency, like for instance a full-page bio of John Brown (of the Harper's Ferry attack during James Buchanan's presidency) or a 2 pages highlight of FDR New Deal.

You will get the essence of some lesser-know presidents like William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Franklin Pierce or Calvin Coolidge without investing too much of your time into it. You never know, it might very well lead you to learn more. In my case, I found the chapter about John Quincy Adams so captivating that I immediatly bought a biography of the New-Englander after completing his chapter.

Knowledge is a precious thing. This book will definitely enhance your awareness of all US Presidents.

Great read, compelled to make the journey with the writer! Larry is a good friend of mine as we grew up in West Texas attending all 12 years of school together. More than once did he take me to hunt arrowheads and Indian relics. His excitement for the Indian culture captivated him then and still does now. The Last Warriors is a riveting read as you attend (with Larry) his thrilling, exciting, and dangerous journey up the Amazon River and face to face with the Yanomamo people. All of the human race is descended from Shem, Ham or Japheth and Larry describes a people probably from Japheth who have remained in their culture of existence undaunted by the "advancement" of their brothers in the flesh.

An Exciiting Adventure Into an Unknown World!

This was an exciting adventure into a world I have never heard of before. I was caught up in the danger and the excitement with each obstacle throughout his trip to the Amazon. I felt like I was running from danger, gigantic mosquitoes, and wondered what I would have done if my life had been placed in the hands of Shaman who wanted to kill me. This is an amazing memoir of an enduring moment in Larry's life. A must read for all who enjoy adventure!

About the Author
I graduated from Cornell University, the most majestic campus of the Ivy League. It's where I was first devastated by love and therefore the most obvious setting for my first tale of mystery, treachery, false imprisonment, and near death. Love in the Time of Cocaine is based on my real life experience and those who lived it with me know how much of myself I have actually chosen to expose. After Cornell, I attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine where I received a partial scholarship. Pursuing Emergency Medicine has only added steeper slopes to life's already steep rollercoaster rides. At work, I encounter exhilirating moments of yanking people away from the grips of death. I practice medicine in the State of NJ. As a student of Buddhism for the past ten years I have found tranquility in my life. It's the path to peace and joy arising from within, despite an external world fraught with rip currents swirling relentlessly at high velocities.

Engaging and Fun Read

Love in the Time of Cocaine follows the passionate and tumultuous relationship between Luis, a young man of Columbian descent born in America, and Pamela, a beautiful young woman from Columbia. When tragedy strikes early in their relationship on the ominously beautiful campus of Cornell University, it sends the protagonist into an exploration of a very dark side of Columbia’s history, both past and present. As Luis attempts to uncover what has happened to his love, he is pushed far beyond his comfortable life in New York and is forced to grapple with an ugly side of Pamela’s life. As the plot progresses, it changes perspectives from one character to the next, traveling non-linearly through time and throughout different settings. Slowly, the writer divulges more and more about each character’s motives and pasts and sheds more light on the events transpiring around Luis and Pamela.

The author creates an engaging and fast-paced text that I found myself thinking about after I had to put the book down—a sure sign for me that I am enjoying the novel. It is a relatively quick read, but it engages the reader enough to make it worth the time. I also found it intriguing that the story is based on real events, and it offered a thought-provoking look into the Columbian drug cartels and life in Columbia.

Although I enjoyed this novel overall, I cannot say I absolutely loved this book simply because some of the characterization and descriptions were cringe-worthy. Some of the characters were well developed and interesting, but some were less so. The descriptions of more minor characters made me chuckle to myself a few times because they almost sounded like satirical characters from a goofy detective novel. There were also a few scenes, especially the more intimate scenes, that I thought overdid it a bit and used awkward language that took away from the story.

I would recommend this book to someone looking for a fun, quick read who is not a huge stickler for perfectly crafted prose. If you can look past some of the more corny moments of the novel, it is an engaging read made more interesting through the reality behind the events.

In the tradition of the great, dark, coming of age novels like Lord of the Flies and a Separate Peace comes Love in the Time of Cocaine by Alvaro Alban MD. A thinly veiled autobiography by this first time author, the novel begs the philosophic question, “Does true love necessarily have a tragic ending?”

The story is engaging and well-written with simile-laden descriptions bathed with insight, and at times, humor. The narrative answers all the questions raised by the reader in this suspenseful yarn that basically takes place in New York and Columbia.

The non-linear plot features Cornell students Luis Valdez, a first generation Columbian-American, Pamela Jimenez, a voluptuous beauty and Columbian immigrant, Brian Bernstein, an overachieving doctor's son and the voice of reason, Chad Heytow, a womanizing adolescent, and Harvey Orloff, a lecherous buffoon.

The book starts with the tender romance of Luis and Pamela which serves as the tome's fulcrum. Brian, Chad and Harvey bear witness to their growing relationship. To go any further would spoil the fun of reading it. This page turner has the reader looking forward to the author's sophomore effort.

True crime readers will really like the book

An incredible story that really focuses on what's wrong with the "System." How can a child be reunited with a father he did not know within a month of being released from prison? I remember the news coverage locally and nationally. Loaded new information about the people involved. Worth reading.

More than true crime... more than a story!

This book was EXCELLENT! Not only did the author tell the story with no sides taken, she also shoots higher and educates the reader on Kentucky Law. The story in itself is absolutely devastating but you can't help but to feel for all of the people involved. In addition to the story, the knowledge, and the education, there is also a bigger cause presented at the end. Brittany advocates for children and child protective services giving statistics on current case loads. She indicates problems that had happened along the way that could be possible factors in why this all happened. This is more than true crime. It's a book that tells a horrible, yet very true story, but also enlightens the reader on other issues with the system. Brittany has extensive knowledge and experience as a defense attorney, and she really did an excellent job with this book!

A Solid True Crime Story

This book was well written. The author did an excellent job of painting a picture for the reader of not only key individuals such as the victim, his family, the Gouker family, and legal professionals, but also the area in which this terrible crime occurred. Having followed this case in the news I was surprised with all of the additional facts and evidence the author provided. Ducker clearly researched thoroughly to write this book.

Hopefully she will write a followup to share with the reader the outcome of any appeals and the lives after the trial of all of the key players.

Born in Italy and raised in Brooklyn, Vincenzo Capone left home when he was a teenager. When the Volstead Act made alcohol production illegal, Richard joined the ranks of law enforcement and became one of the most successful Prohibition officers in the country. He chased down criminals, busted alcohol stills, and protected the Indian reservations he served, all under an assumed name. But his past caught up with him when his younger brother, Al Capone, became one of the most infamous criminals in the country. They were two siblings on opposite sides of the law, both ambitious and skillful, and both of the same family.

About the Author
Jeff McArthur grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska where he began writing at a very young age. He became fascinated with movies as a teenager and began making them at 15, going on to New York University for college where he studied film, TV, and radio. In New York he worked with the comedy group The State, with PBS, and several others, before moving out to Los Angeles in ’95. Jeff continued to work in the film industry for 15 years, working on various films including a few of his own, such as the documentary The Forgotten Grave, and the horror film Stolen Souls. He has more recently circled back around to book writing and he first released the critically acclaimed bestseller Pro Bono – The 18-Year Defense of Caril Ann Fugate, about the famous case for which his grandfather was the attorney. He has gone on to write novels such as The American Game and the Relic Worlds series. He has more recently written the true crime book The Great Heist, about the largest bank robbery in history, where he introduced the world to a forgotten American hero, Richard “Two Gun” Hart. Jeff’s latest work, Two Gun Hart, focuses on that amazing character who was not only a successful law man, but also the long-lost brother of Al Capone.

Truth is stranger than fiction

Second generation Italian immigrant, horse rider/ acrobat/ boxer/ wrestler/ circus performer, music lover, blue collar worker, honored Veteran of World War I, Nebraskan Marshall, agent of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, temporary bodyguard to President Coolidge, delusional and intractable in seeing the world in anything but black and white, idolizer of movie star Cowboys, perjurer, and flamboyant enforcer of the 18th amendment, are all terms that could be used to describe Vincenzo Capone, or Richard Hart, or one of the other names he (and others) called “Two Gun,” but if you called him anything at all—and that is extremely doubtful for anyone prior to reading this book—you would have called him the big brother of Al Capone: the most notorious Prohibition gangster of them all. This is a story so unbelievable, so incredible, it can only be true. The author does a fantastic job painting a vividly detail portrait of a man most could not even have imagined existed. Seamlessly written, the author takes the life of Richard “Two Gun” Hart and breaks it down into digestible chunks, brilliantly illustrating the people, times, and events that surrounded, influenced, and shaped the “other” Capone.
This is not simply a book one reads, so much as devours, and not alone, as I constantly felt the need to share in the discoveries of the book, reading passages to friends and family alike just to see the shocked and thrilled expressions on their faces that must have mirrored my own. Even people who lived to the times discussed, were still taken aback in disbelief. It is disappointing that the citations to clarify the many fascinating historical events are broadly listed at the end only, making it difficult to allow the reader to separate and make their own opinion about some of the speculations that the author engages in on occasion (for example, he continues with the faulty notion that a cow caused the great Chicago fire), although not without circumspection and insight. It additionally could be argued that the author is too reliant on integrating information about the criminal Capones with that of their long lost brother (who is, after all, the centerpiece of the story), a fact that he touches upon at the end, although the vast majority of it is clearly necessary to broaden the understanding of “Two Gun.”
The story is historically fascinating, poignant and deeply moving; a true adventure tale that speaks to the American character. It is a story about immigration, American values (and their mercurial manifestations), the (im)possibilities of (re)defining oneself, and family—for better or for worse. I can’t imagine someone not wanting to read this book.

Fascinating and Intriguing

Two Gun Hart: Law Man, Cowboy, and Long-Lost Brother of Al Capone by Jeff McArthur is an expertly written biography of Vincenzo Capone who was Al Capone's brother.

The infamous Al Capone is a house-hold name, but I had no idea that he had a brother who changed his name to Richard Hart and lived his life working for the government. From an agent of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to working as a temporary bodyguard to President Coolidge, Vincenzo live his life fighting the bad guys and was far removed from his brother's criminal career until Al became a hardened criminal.

The book starts with an overview of the Italian immigration to New York. Many families sought refuge and a new life in America at that time and the Capone's were once such family. With a love for cowboys and the old west, Vincenzo Capone runs leaves home at an early age to escape the stereotypical life of an Italian immigrant in the early 1900's. His brother Al went on to become the most notorious criminal in modern history and Vincenzo would have remained unknown if not for this wonderful book by Mr. McArthur.

I am Italian and have done quite a bit of history for my own family lineage on my father's side, so I completely understand the long hours of research this type of book would have needed. The author did a great job in finely detailing the life and times of Vincenzo Capone a.k.a. Richard "Two Gun" Hart along with glimpses into Al Capone's life as well. The events and the history of this man are absolutely incredible and so very interesting.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves history as it was an intriguing and fascinating read. I actually shared some of the passages in the book with my friends and family who were as intrigued as I was to learn of Vincenzo's existent on the right side of the law.

Two Gun Hart Gets Two Thumbs Up!

“Two Gun Hart”
What an amazing book! I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone to add to your library!
This is the story of Vincenzo Capone, who is Alphonse “Al” Capone’s oldest brother and how he left home at the age of 16 and completely reinvented himself as Richard “Two Gun” Hart and ended up in Nebraska on the opposite side of the law than his younger brother who was famous for his bootlegging. Vincenzo Capone’s travels took him from Brooklyn, to a Wild West Show, and then he went overseas and became a War Hero in World War I. After World War I he jumped off a train at a rest stop in Homer, Nebraska and became “Two Gun” Hart, where his adventures really begin… as a Prohibition Officer after The Volstead Act prohibiting alcohol was passed and became enforced in 1920.
This book is really well researched and the way the way the information is presented makes the reader feel like they really know Richard “Two Gun” Hart. I had a perfect picture of him in my head from reading this book, and it was very satisfying to see the pictures later in the book of him, and the author had done such a wonderful job of already describing him to me, right down to RJ Hart’s boots that I felt like I really did know him.
I have lived in Nebraska my entire life, and wish that I had known this little bit of history of our state years ago. In my opinion after reading about him, RJ “Two Gun” Hart was truly a great lawman who really wanted to make a difference, and his is a story that needed telling. After reading this book, I really felt that the lawman truly was incorruptible, (as shown how he would stand up to his Supervising Officer for some moral ambiguity.) The book also shows that while he was an officer with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, he really did care about them, and showed compassion for the Indian tribes and their way of life, especially in how he learned their language and customs and readily empowered them by deputizing them instead of bringing more outsiders into their reservations. I really enjoyed reading the correspondence between him and his superiors, which again reinforces the quality of research put into this book, and it is so well written that time flew by me while I was engrossed in it. I was able to see how Richard “Two Guns” Hart’s love of adventure led him to experience life at fullest capacity, which he did, on his own terms.
