A surprisingly fantastic read

As a 44 year old straight man, I am probably not the publisher's target demographic for this book. However, I got it on the recommendation of a friend and absolutely loved it. I read it in one sitting over the course of a lazy sick day at home. At turns sad, funny, poignant, and eventually uplifting (but you knew that), it was really a treat. As a veteran of the post-divorce online dating world, I thought the author captured the nuances of that awkward experience perfectly. The same could be said about the rush of high school crushes, the crush of college disappointments (and poor choices), and the constant process by which even the unluckiest of us can reinvent ourselves and keep moving forward.
People are going to compare this to Eat Pray Love for obvious reasons, but the shortcomings of that book are completely absent from this charming memoir. While I enjoyed the Roman and Balinese sections of EPL, the Indian parts and the consequent moralizing soured me on the book . Romance is My Day Job is completely free of sanctimony and cant. It's breezy and fun, but unstintingly honest. I can't recommend it enough.
(I do hope that it earns the sales and amazing success of EPL.)

Surprisingly Powerful

From high school to middle age, Patience Bloom recounts the history of many of her relationships--romantic, professional and familial. Throughout the book she compares and contrasts the daily ups and downs of her life to those of the heroines of the romance novels she edits as part of her job at Harlequin books. As a result, there is plenty of absurdity, but it is of the kind where Patience invites us to laugh with her. There are also a few devastating setbacks that are confronted with brutal honesty. The author has an authentic voice, a keen awareness of self and a willingness to share some really painful experiences with her readers. On one level this is a breezy read with a lot of humorous incidents and more than one laugh out loud moment. On another level though, this is a fascinating story about how relationships influenced an individual over a lifetime and led to no small amount of personal growth. That is the reason why, for me, this is more than just a good book to read during a day at the beach.

I loved this book, a romance editor's frank and honest look at real-life dating and love. It's at turns funny, sad, hopeful and poignant as she wades through the dating pool in search of her own romantic hero over the years. She doesn't gloss over the bad parts, but still manages to keep us laughing as she shows how reality compares to fiction (and usually not in a happy way). And just like in a novel, when all hope seems lost, she gets the happy ending she deserves -- affirming that true love really does exist. Well done!
