Biography Summarizes Life of Radical Activist

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn blazed across America’s political spectrum during the early and then the middle 20th century. She started as a robust, passionate young woman who had little reticence about mounting soapboxes, speaking to thousands of working women and men burdened with unfair labor practices and low pay. She became a hero of the radical union organization, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and led the group’s efforts in a series of labor disputes and free speech fights. She was sidelined during the late 1920s and much of the 1930s by emotional exhaustion, physical ailments, and the fierce government clampdown on the IWW and any other radical voices. When she recovered physically, Flynn relished a return to the conflict and fought for free speech, labor rights, and civicl liberties. With changing conditions, she shifted tactics and organizations to become a leader of the Communist Party USA. Her activism resulted in further harassment by the government and, finally, to imprisonment. In the span of her 74 years, Flynn developed a sizeable historical footprint as she ushered in fundamental change, advances in women’s role in society, and the political health of the nation.
This new biography of Flynn assumes formidable tasks. First, to summarize and condense Flynn’s rich and complicated political and personal life for use in undergraduate courses. According to the intent of this coursework series, the Lives of American Women, this volume like the others intends to focus on a particular aspect of the subject’s life that reflects her time. In Flynn’s case, it is her journey as a radical activist, although she lived mostly as such an activist and that aspect is her life. Second, to present her life in an engaging, compelling narrative that stirs the imagination. That undertaking is often difficult when so much information about the subject already exists. Frequently in this 178 page account, author Lara Vapnek succeeds with both tasks, and Flynn emerges as a passionate and driven activist, full of contradictions as well as admirable traits. Occasionally, the narrative lapses into choppy sentences – sometimes with extraneous information disrupting the flow – and flat story-telling.
For readers already familiar with Elizabeth Gurley Flynn’s life through her autobiographies, collections of writings, and earlier biographies, this volume will provide few new insights or information. There is little evidence of original research, but none was intended in this volume. Yet for an overview and a reminder of issues important to Flynn and to the country at large, this will be a helpful supplement. For the intended audience – undergraduate students – this volume may be an enlightening view of an intriguing woman who dedicated her life to social and economic justice.

The biography is better than Elizabeth's own autobiography

The biography is better than Elizabeth's own autobiography. There is strong interest in her life as she is my mother's second cousin, discovered about1995. Our family became friends with her neice Frances and heard more stories of Elizabeth and Cathering.

A very readable recounting of a radical life

Through the lens of Flynn's life, interesting enough on its own, I also got a sense of the broader context of radical labor politics of the first half of the 20th century.
