"Five Steps" by Tim I. Gurung is a deeply moving story about John and his mission to find answers to some of life's most profound questions.
The only thing remaining at the scene is a memory stick, which John discovers has five phone numbers on it and nothing else. John is determined these phone numbers will lead him to the answers he is seeking and sets out on a journey to visit the people on the other end of the phone lines. This journey takes him all over the world: Japan, Tibet, India, America and England, and during this quest John discovers the meaning of his life. This is the only way he will resolve the conflict in his heart, allowing him to make peace with himself, with God, and with the senseless tragedy suffered by his family.
I thought the author chose a very unique way to broach such emotional and thought-provoking subject matters, and thoroughly enjoyed the read. The descriptions of the majestic settings visited by John truly brought me to a place where I felt like I was a visitor along for the ride on his journey. John's character did seem to be lacking in depth a bit in the beginning of the story, but I was delighted to find that he developed more as his journey progressed, and it totally makes sense with the story line. I found the story to be a bit confusing in the beginning as well but again, everything comes together as the story evolves. The ending was a bit of a surprise to me, but a perfect conclusion to a profound story.
I recommend "Five Steps by Tim I. Gurung to all lovers of a great story as well as those looking for inspiration and personal growth. Well done.
From the Author
FIVE STEPS is my first book, I wrote it in 2009, and I have came a long way since then. Since it was my first book, of course, it has special meaning in my heart and readers seem to know that and appreciate it as well. As I tried to put as much as I can into this book, it has became quite bulky as well and I have tried to deal with five issues of that period that touched my heart. You can read it as for entertainment, or think for a while about those issues I have tried to convey here and take actions if necessary. That is of course up to you and if you can just read my book and appreciate it, it will be more than enough for me, and I sincerely thank you from my heart in advance. Thank you so much!
From the Inside Flap
Acknowledgements!
It was the year 2009, the world was in a deep recession, and I was contemplating a few
available choices as my alternative career. There were a few years left before I turned fifty,
and I had always hoped for a meaningful career for the last half of my life. I wanted to know like what I would be doing, and wanted my new career to be inspiring and worth my efforts.
Most importantly, it would have to come directly from the bottom of my heart and make
me happy too. I had a few options, but I had no experience or expertise to give myself a
competitive edge, and I had no interest whatsoever in working for money again. Writing
had always been a great interest of mine; I started writing when I was very young and
rekindling my inherent passion again was not that difficult. Although I had stopped writing
for twenty years, the moment I started again, I felt as if I was at home and since then have
never been happier. My choice for my next and probably last career was hence made, and I
haven't looked back since then.
Life has been kind to me; I have gotten to visit many countries and to witness the different
lives of people, yet I have never forgotten my humble roots. Being from one of the poorest
countries on earth teaches you how to be humble, grateful and appreciative for the small
things in life. From the very beginning, my struggles were my lessons and my own life
experiences were my universities. I learned all of my most important lessons in real life,
lessons that cannot be learned in school. After many trials and errors, I believe I turned out
well. I am sharing my lessons with the world now through my books.
Writing is a gift I got from the Almighty, and I cannot waste it. I have always wished to
use it for a good cause. I am thankful to God that I don't have to rely on it for my living.
The money I receive from my books will go to run my family charity foundation and to
provide necessary help to the old, the poor and the needy.
My family has always been at the core of what I do in life; they have always been there for
me. Without their help, support and courage, nothing would have been possible in my life.
I am very grateful and appreciative, especially to my dearest wife, Tina, and my two
children, Smriti and Shapath. Thank you all so much; I simply couldn't ask for more and I
love you all so much.
I couldn't be more grateful to my daughter and son for making the beautiful covers for all
of my books. I am really proud of you.
My special thanks and appreciation go to my editor VICTORIA GIRAUD; you have been
kind, patient and a good teacher for me.
My intention has never been to judge, offend or hurt other peoples' feelings. This book is a
work of fiction, written with good intentions, and everything else is coincidental.
Yours truly,
Tim I. GURUNG

Charitable

This story begins in Hong Kong with a devastating explosion that kills John's wife and son, and nearly kills him. When John is finally released from the hospital, he returns to the scene of the accident looking for something, anything to make sense of what happened. He finds a computer memory stick with five random phone numbers on it. Desperate to find a new meaning for his life, John sells his belongings and decides to track down the people associated with the phone numbers. What John finds in these five steps is amazing; it frees his spirit from the heartache of his lost family and readies him for his final journey. Tim donates his book royalties to Isslcare Foundation Ltd, a charity for the old, poor and needy in Hong Kong.

Interesting reading
By Tina
It is a very interesting and emotional book to read. John lost his family in a car accident, after recovering from the tragedy he went to see the accident place and he found a memory chip. When he found some telephone numbers he wanted to check if it has anything to do with accident. It took him to Okinawa, Tibet, Kashmir, New York and Portland at where he had to deal with many different and interesting issues that made him a complete different person. He started to see the world differently, made his life more meaningful and he was able to end his life as he would have wanted. Everyone should read it at least once in life.

From Catastrophe to Healing

Five Steps is a novel that reaches you at various levels. It is a kind of a travelogue, for as John, the protagonist, travels from Hong Kong, where he lives, to Japan to Tibet to India, and then New York and U.K. , and finally to Nepal, we travel with him, taking in the sights and sounds, and are introduced to the beauty and the way of life of these parts. It is also a novel that tries to solve the issues that rear their heads in our world everyday: the changing life order from the past to the present, of countries exerting control, of illegal trade, of youth destroyed by drugs, of violence, inhumanity and cruelty. It is also a story of a man who, despite the tragedy of loss in his own life, does not seek revenge, but instead, goes on to bring good into the lives he touches.
Of course, in his attempts to bring a change for the better among the people and lands he visits, we may find it strange that John has so many qualities: he appears to be larger than life, with answers to almost all the questions that plague the world. Some parts of the book therefore sound like sermons. That may be what heroes are made of, but in today’s times, it is difficult to swallow things like the fact that he knows the Indian language and quotes a phrase to a Britisher; explaining what it means to be colonized. It is almost as though the discovery of the memory stick with the numbers gives young John phenomenal understanding and knowledge as well.
Tim I. Gurung’s first book’s most potent message is that despite personal loss, one can surface out of depression and unhappiness by moving out to help others with compassion and understanding, and thus find peace. It offers sound advice to those of us looking for some answers to existence.
