About the Author
Doug Balfour is owner and CEO of Geneva Global. He provides expert guidance to foundations, corporations, individuals, and other organizations throughout the world that seek to apply a business mind-set and results-oriented approach to their social-impact efforts.
With more than twenty-five years of experience in philanthropy, international development, leadership, and organizational development, Doug brings a wealth of knowledge to his work with Geneva Global’s clients. Since taking ownership of Geneva Global in 2008, Doug has assembled a leadership team that brings expertise from the worlds of international development, global health, finance, consulting, risk management, and marketing to each client assignment. He has led the expansion of the organization’s offerings into a full range of philanthropic and consulting services. Passionate about bringing creative solutions to address social problems, he seeks to revise traditional approaches whenever appropriate and possible.
Throughout his career, Doug has spoken on topics such as maximizing social impact, measuring social change, creating social transformation through collaboration, and the meeting of strategic philanthropy and impact investing. Currently, Doug sits on the boards of Capital for Good, USA; Capital for Good, UK; and the END Fund.
Prior to joining Geneva Global’s senior leadership team in 2006, Doug helped to create and was executive director of London-based Integral, a global alliance of twelve relief and development agencies. He previously served for nine years as general director of London-based Tearfund, one of the United Kingdom’s largest aid agencies. At Tearfund, he led a multinational staff of more than 650 people, implementing advocacy, relief, and development programs through three hundred partners in seventy countries.
Earlier, Doug held management and consulting roles with the UK-based Lucas Group and lived and worked in various countries in Africa. In 2003, Doug was also part of the founding team of the Micah Network and Micah Challenge. He studied at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom and earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Cranfield School of Management in the United Kingdom.

This book is the future of philanthropy

This book is just what the philanthropic world needs. A clear, accessible message about 'performance philanthropy'; a call to be as smart and innovative when it comes to charitable giving as we are with other industries and investments. What's more it's a page-turner, packed with wild and wonderful stories that take place in Africa, the UK and ultimately the US. Woven together, these anecdotes show how one man came to philanthropy and then managed that passion throughout his career, even when he had his family's safety to worry about. This challenges us all to think about why we are drawn to help people, and how we are best suited to do so. You will be inspired and impressed, amused and brought down to earth all at once.

Your Guide to Successful Development

By incorporating skills from all aspects of the professional spectrum, both profit and not-for-profit, and by instituting fundamental tools to help measure and guide results, the ideas in this book create a paradigm for successful giving and successful implementation.
