About the Author
Andrew Small has worked on Chinese foreign and economic policy issues in Beijing, Brussels, London, and now Washington, D.C. He is a transatlantic fellow with the Asia program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, which he established in 2006. He previously worked as the director of the Foreign Policy Centre's Beijing office; as a visiting fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and was an ESU scholar in the office of Senator Edward M. Kennedy. His articles and papers have been published in outlets including the New York Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, and the Washington Quarterly. The 21st Century's Most Crucial Geo-Strategic Alliance

Andrew Small sheds light on one of the least known, yet strategically significant, relationships in international relations; the informal alliance between China and Pakistan. Virtually unacknowledged in the West, China and Pakistan's co-operation over the previous five decades has touched many areas; military, some economic and even some logistical and scientific issues. These two nations could very well hold the key to a politically stable future Asian continent and also the growing threat to both of militant Islam groups.

Firstly, it needs to be said, Small highlights categorically that the alliance between China and Pakistan, despite being decades old, has never been entirely formal in nature. No treaties, agreements, pacts or unions have ever been signed between the two. This should not reduce the importance of the axis to either party, however, and is indeed one of the reasons why it has remained 'hidden' for so long. The strategic benefit of the axis to both nations is explained in detail

The vast extent of the axis has and continues to be military in nature. Since the Sino-Indian War of 1962, China has regularly supplied arms and logistics to Pakistan, seeing her as a counterpoint to a local strategic rival; India. This grew after the 'Smiling Buddha' detonation of an atomic bomb by India during the mid-1970s, and here is where the author hits the crucial pivot of the China/Pakistan axis; the supplying of nuclear capability to the Pakistan government.

Small makes it abundantly clear that it's not simply a case of China shipping nuclear weapons to Islamabad. Co-operation, collusion and exchanges of ideas are apparent. A simplistic view is that of Chinese brawn and Pakistani brains working together, but further research emphasizes an element of both brawn and brain by each side. Pakistani knowledge of rocket technology, however, was not quite so sophisticated and China has basically supplied an effective delivery system to the Pakistanis over the years. Whilst being interpreted as rash, this is considered to have helped stabilize the India-Pakistan situation to some extent. The economic aspect of the axis is somewhat weaker. Trade and investment has been apparent but this has been to a much lesser extent than the military ties established between the two. Mega-projects have begun in Pakistan with major Chinese investment, however, they have not always been successful. Communication projects such as the building of highways across the borders have also been accomplished.

It needs to be documented that the axis has not always led to a smooth relationship between China and Pakistan. China has been willing to support Pakistan diplomatically and militarily against Indian aggression, but this is not extended to the opposite direction. There are limits, and China has made clear its willingness to only go so far in supporting Pakistan. The issue of Islamic militancy also rears its ugly features. Whilst more of a secondary target to extremists, China has still become increasingly frustrated with Islamabad's inability to properly deal with the problem caused by militants in Xinjiang. Muslim Uighur militancy is a more 'low-intensity' issue compared to that waged in the West, but it is still clearly a grave concern to Beijing. You'll need to read more to discover the rest.

This is a very enjoyable and informative book. Small has clearly done his research here. He has also not restricted his work to simple bilateral relations and includes the areas where the United States, the Central Asian republics and also Afghanistan have been relevant to the relationship and also how they've influenced it too.

Important Events Occuring Beneath the Headlines

The Prologue quickly got my attention - author Small attributed the government in Afghanistan post 9/11 as installed by the Pakistani governmen, and asserted that despite the Taliban being led, armed and financed from Pakistan, the relationship with the U.S. remained strong. Ironically, Pakistan was seen as a crucial ally in our Global War on Terrorism, receiving billions in military aid and arms transfers. Meanwhile, China had built and mostly paid for a new Pakistani port at Gwadar, and there was hope of strong economic benefits from ties to China - eg. expansion of the Chashma nuclear power plants.

The Prologue open with the story of the kidnapping of Chinese massage workers by Red Mosque militants (terrorists) in Pakistan. The U.S. had pushed Pakistan for years to take action against these group, but not until Beijing intervened was serious action undertaken.

China's backing for Pakistan led to it providing that nation the materials needed to build an A-bomb. It is central to Beijing's plans for a network of ports, pipelines, roads and railways connecting the oil and gas fields of the Middle East to its mega-cities, and its coastline is becoming a staging post for China's take-off as a naval power. Pakistan's intelligence services are also seen as an asset to China's growing interests in the Islamic world, as well as to choking off support for militant Islamic activities within its own borders. And, an India forced to look nervously at its western neighbor is easier for Beijing to manage.

China has also become increasingly concerned with about prospects for Afghanistan after U.S. withdrawal., accentuated by fears over the worsening terrorist threat within China.

China is poised to build two 1,100 MW reactors ($5 billion each) with a new design less than 20 miles from downtown Karachi.

Shortly after the Osama bin Laden was killed by the Americans in 2011, the Pakistan government showed the Chinese the crashed U.S. stealth helicopter. Previously Pakistan did the same thing with U.S. cruise missiles. In return, China has provided technological assistance and materials for Pakistan's nuclear and missile programs. China has also told the Pakistanis from time to time, not to alienate the U.S. too much - to help constrain U.S.-India ties and benefit from more U.S. financial and military aid.

I've long thought we had discarded the intent and purpose of the Constitution and allowed individuals to interrupt it's meaning using the evolved language of today. This collection substantiates my beliefs. God and personal freedom from government was and still should be the foundation of our Republic. Self reliance made America great, reliance on government will makes us just another also ran.I try and read from this book on a daily basis and am astounded by the men who gambled everything for freedom. We have let them down.I think the most sterling quality of this book is that you have to draw your own conclusion, no one is trying to interrupt for you. I know there was another point of view at this time and hope to be able to read their thoughts also.

“The Burma Spring” is an instant must-read resource for all things Aung San Suu Kyi and Myanmar.
In her new book, Journalist Rena Pederson offers the whole range of what we should know—from how to pronounce the Nobel laureate’s name to why Suu Kyi’s battle for democracy and freedom in Burma still isn’t over.
Pederson takes her readers along on multiple reporting trips and draws on interviews with experts, authorities, followers, enemies and observers of Suu Kyi. Pederson’s journalistic chops are obvious, too, in the original sources, books and documents that result in the expanse and credibility of this 535-page report.
We are there for a frightening massacre and for the pronouncements of the men who imprisoned Suu Kyi or now resist her party. “The Burma Spring” constantly provides the national and global context for Suu Kyi’s struggle--right up to 2015.
And all of this substance is delivered in an accessible, conversational tone.
Significantly, the other news we take from Pederson’s sophisticated work is that Aung San Suu Kyi is more than inspiration, complicated beyond icon. Through years of Suu Kyi’s observations and actions, her long separation from her husband and sons, even the trademark flowers in her hair, Pederson has illuminated a human being.

Admiral book worth reading

The biography is accessible and conversational in tone and includes information as well as explanations I've read no place else. However, by the time it got close to the end of the more than 500 pages I had a time staying with it. There was too much about Laura Bush and not enough about ASSK's current thoughts. I would have liked more about her thoughts on the upcoming elections and the refugee issues.

An interesting and meticulously well documented book which covers modern Burmese history and focuses on democracy advocate and Nobel prize winner Daw Ang Dan Suu Kyi (ASSK).

The book does a good job of describing how the corruption and brutality of Burma’s military government has hurt the Burmese people and made them amongst the poorest and most repressed in the world. The authors’ descriptions of ASSK’s and her NLD party’s struggles, sacrifices, and courage as they continue to fight for democracy in Burma are nothing short of inspirational.

While I found this to be one of the better books on modern Burma, I believe that the author tried to cover too much ground and, in some places, veered off of her main theme. Additionally, I thought the biographical descriptions in the first half of the book were a bit too sympathetic, and did not read like an investigative journalist wrote them.

I found the last 100 pages of the book to be particularly interesting. In this section the author discusses ASSK’s attempts to navigate her political party into the next election, criticism of her tactics by U.S. officials such as Senator Jim Webb, her position on recent Buddhist & Muslim violence, and the future of the NLD political party. I would have preferred to read more about these issues and less on some of the more peripheral items.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the struggle for democracy in modern Burma, and the contributions that Daw Ang Dan Suu Kyi and the NLD party have made towards this goal.

Wonderful and very well written biography about a man who wanted to be President. He proved himself to be a great humanitarian through his quite, but significant, efforts allowing 1,300 Jews fleeing Germany and the Nazis to find a home in the Philippines. He was Hoosier's Schindler. Dean Kotlowski writes the first comprehensive biography of McNutt, an Indiana University Law School Dean Commander of the National American Legion, Governor, War Manpower Commission Chair and more. Worth your time.

I recently had the pleasure of attending and being part of the coordination for an event featuring Mary Pender Greene as part of my work as Outreach Director for Suffolk LI Mentor and Mentee. Mary was our featured speaker at a session at the Patchogue, NY Library on June 24th. The evening was truly inspiring and I immediately felt an association with Mary, her book and her Virtual Personal Board of Directors (VPBOD) methodology. I have read Mary's book "Creative Mentorship and Career Building Strategies - How to Build Your Own Virtual Personal Board of Directors" with a vengeance and I can say that I totally subscribe to the direction, guidance, inspiration and the powerful information she shares with people of all ages working to jumpstart, advance or invigorate their career.

I would consider myself a disciple of all that the book describes - so much so that I want to pay it forward by being part of helping to spread the VPBOD methodology into the future and with anyone I encounter who is focused on managing and leading their careers. I believe that the tools and strategies described in the book are critical for anyone focused on advancing their career and achieving personal and professional success. This book is a "must read" for successfully navigating all stages of your career.
