When Rick Richards was 8 years old, his mother sold him. She dumped his suitcase in a waiting station wagon and sent him off to live with a couple he had never met. Years later he made his way to Hollywood where he worked as a stunt man, model and actor. His first marriage to a young woman he met while working in a Wild West show resulted in two beautiful children he loved and deeply admired. But Richards battled demons most of his life, and his search for purpose led him to Nichiren Buddhism and to his second wife Eva. They practiced their faith together until that day in December 2010 when he passed away. His commitment to his spiritual life enabled him to overcome his mother’s rejection. His memoir, a letter to his grandchildren who were born after his death, is painful and triumphant, staggeringly raw yet as gentle as a butterfly resting on a lotus blossom.

This book is worthy to read!

I got to know a little about Rick through his wife, Eva. His life narrated in this book with such vulnerability and raw emotions will definitely touch your soul. The struggles and victories Rick chronicled in this book, makes The Butterfly and The Bulldozer more than just a good read but also a worthy source of inspiration.

Amazing Book!!!!

I knew Rick in the SGI, however I had no idea what he went through as a child. I read this book in 3 days, that is good for me. After reading it, my faith has been forever changed and I have been forever changed to be a better person. Thank you Rick and Eva.

This book is amazing, it tells the true story of an amazing man. What he went through after his Mother sold him at 8 years old, would shock most people. And the way he suffered and overcame his difficulties....truly will touch your heart and soul. !!! I have read it twice and am going to read it again. He is an amazing storyteller. I miss you Rick. Wish I had spent more time with him before he passed. He could have written many books. And he may have been a famous writer.
