The reader of Dr. Weber’s book will come away with three learning experiences. First, s/he will come to understand Plato’s views on government, after a review of the myth of the metals, in which Plato explains how people are to be classified. Because Plato was an elitist who supported the upholding of caste differences, he did not believe that democracy was a desirable system. Yet Plato did teach about the virtues that will make a society run like an ideal city – virtues like wisdom, courage, justice and moderation.
The thoughts of Plato are compared with those of one of the heroes of the author, John Dewey. The reader is provided with ample opportunity to get to know Dewey’s thoughts on education, pragmatic humanism and democracy and is thus able to appreciate why Dewey is held in such regard.
The third experience for the reader of this book is learning about what it takes to be a leader. We see how leaders can apply the Platonic virtues, and we learn how a liberal arts education, as promoted by Dewey, can benefit and shape the direction of future leaders. We also see how leadership is applied in the state of Mississippi, the author’s adopted state.
This text will be of great benefit to students, due to its clear writing style and its sincere and respectful tone. Of particular interest to me was the chapter on Democratic leadership in China via an exploration of the writings of scholar Keping Wang. I recommend adoption of this text by colleges and universities – and I do believe it would even be acceptable for use by high school students in honors classes.

This book should be read by people who care about the process of democratic government and by all aspiring politicians . It is important to apply philosophical reasoning to the process of guidance by our leaders. The book is well written and clear.
