A Sense of Our Times

I've been reading the essays in Christopher G.Moore's "The Age of Dis-Consent." Some are familiar; I read them in their digital versions. But it's interesting: I read them on paper now - sitting on the veranda, outside Starbucks on Bangkok's Silom Road - and they are so much more meaningful, and enjoyable. It brings to mind eighteenth century London, Sam Johnson and his "Rambler" - and the other two, Addison and Steele, and their "Spectator." Bangkok is not London, and this is hardly the Age of Reason. But Moore's writing evokes earlier essayist, and the sense of their times they were able to bring to their readers. And that's what Moore does with our era - from the esoteric perspective of Thailand. And he does it well. His essays are well thought out and well-written, and they're always engaging. The learning he brings to his writing, of crime and the law, and of our new digital age, can make reading his essays an enlightening experience. It's always an enjoyable one.

Thought Provoking Essays

Christopher G. Moore is widely known of course for his Vincent Calvino crime fiction novels, having recently published the most recent in the series called '' Crack Down ''. He's a prolific writer with more than 30 published books to his name. I happened by chance to come across his work in the latter part of the 1980's, whilst visiting the book shops of Bangkok, Thailand. His name has appeared in those book shops constantly ever since.

I first fell in love with his short-stories and a book called '' Chairs.'' You know you've arrived in life when you have the best viewing chair.... Terrific. I wanted more short-stories and he duly delivered by putting together an array of top authors that gave us the brilliant '' Bangkok Noir '' and other short stories from around the cities of Asia.

Next came the essays. I wasn't sure that I could really get in to essays, I didn't know if essays were my thing, but I was wrong. It's a bit like when you hanker for the old stuff your favourite band used to play. The band have moved on to explore new ideas and the change of sound is not so appealing to you. It's more like change is not so appealing to you, but I had no reason to worry at all as the essays deliver, big time.

There have been some tremendous essays written by Christopher G. Moore over the last four years or so and those essay's produced four quality books. The books in the essay series are '' The Cultural Detective,'' '' Faking It In Bangkok,'' '' Fear And Loathing In Bangkok and the latest ''The Age of Dis - Consent.'' I count myself very fortunate to have all four books.

Christopher G. Moore is an explorer, an observer and a superb organizer of his findings. The essays always make you think and question the conventional and I like that.

The essays from '' The Age of Dis-Consent '' certainly cover a wide spectrum of subjects, but there truly is something for everybody. Here is a brief list and I mean brief on some of the subjects touched on.

There's political issues, law enforcement, language and cultural mindset that feature under the Thailand category of essays. There's a look at violence, systems and the boundary lines of our lives. A look at the way crime is tackled and crime investigating in an ever changing world. He delves into the fascinating subject of time, a subject that has always intrigued me. There are essays on the subject of information, another fascinating subject. Finally, we are taken in to the world of writing and authors. However, as I said, this barely scratches the surface.

I of course have my personal favourite's and there's a couple of essay's that are right at the top of my list.

The essay called '' Beagle Sailing Lessons for Writing '' is basically like attending a workshop on writing - it's packed with tips and advice. All authors have their various means and ways for producing their work, but this essay is a magnificent insight into how Christopher G. Moore goes about it.

" This is a look into my writing process. Other writers will have their recommendations as to how the process works. I love the sense of the unknown and the adventure of exploration. I find an idea, a character, a theme for which I have a passion. Without passion to sustain you, it will be a long, lonely and isolating voyage. Find a subject that you feel passionate about and then go sailing on your own personal Beagle."

An equally superb essay is '' Man With a Scarf.'' In this essay we are reminded how observing the finer details can lead to a fuller and richer life. This is a terrific read. I have read this essay about 12 times now and each time I read it, I seem to find something else new. It's great.

Another very enjoyable essay was ''An Orwellian Look at Henry Miller.'' It was based on George Orwell's review of Miller's book '' Tropic of Cancer.'' There was a class divide between the two, but a respect of Miller's work by Orwell. The description of the two authors by Christopher G. Moore indicates just how big the divide was.

'' Miller, an American, was an escape artist, a hustler, and sensualist. Orwell, an Englishman, was a Barcelona street fighter and British colonial official.''

I enjoyed that Orwell had admiration and respect for the literature of working class Miller and I admired greatly that Miller had the courage to write about whatever he wanted to and to hell with what anyone thought. Christopher G. Moore captures this all perfectly in this essay.

The essay called '' Updating Madness looks at language and essentially the trio of words that are '' insanity,'' '' craziness,'' and '' madness.'' It's amazing how the meaning of words can take on a gradual change over the years. The essay combines these three words with authority, bucking the system and all via the vehicle of one of my favourite ever movies called '' One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.''

Finally, there's an essay called '' Duration '' that I found particularly interesting. In this essay the author takes a look at '' time. '' I have always been fascinated by the subject of time and found this very thought provoking.

I highly recommend '' The Age of Dis-consent.'' It's a book I totally enjoyed and at the same time learned an awful lot from as well. To be honest though, I am just pleased that I have the complete set of all four books as I have the luxury to delve into any essay at any time.

Timely Essays sure to become Timeless written by my Favorite Living Essayist, Christopher G. Moore

Christopher G. Moore is, simply put, my favorite living essayist. The Age of Dis- Consent comes with endorsements from a favorite political analyst, Kong Rithdee whom many will know from his work at the Bangkok Post and Thitinan Pongsudhirak a professor at Chulalongkorn University and prominent political analyst in his own right, readers will find themselves choosing from an array of essays which combine Thai politics and societal issues. The topics effect every man and woman, regardless of where they might call home, while blending in literary elements, which I particularly enjoy about Moore's writing style. Individual essays are devoted to George Orwell, Kafka and Henry Miller.

This is the the fourth book of essays penned by Christopher G. Moore, also known for his Vincent Calvino crime series. The Age of Dis-Consent follows up on, The Cultural Detective, Faking it in Bangkok and Fear and Loathing in Bangkok.

The title is well thought out. These are not agreeable times we live in and permissions have been taken away, not granted, worldwide, particularly in the country Christopher G. Moore has called home for decades, Thailand. Moore helps identify not only the known permissions taken away but the ones not thought of by everyone.

If you want to make a bit of sense out of a very foggy world, Moore shines an effective fog-light into the distance, which simultaneously helps the reader see the world better, while reflecting on the fog particles themselves.

The book is broken down, conveniently, into seven sections: Thailand in the Age of Dis-Consent; Thai Law Enforcement and Cultural Mindset; Evolution of Violence & the Borderless World; Crime Investigation in a Changing World; Space, Time, Technology and Cultural Gravity; Information and Theory of Mind and; On Writing and Authors.

Two of my favorite essays in the book are, Personalized Swat Teams for the Filthy Rich, about the growing wealth inequalities in the world. You don't have to read the 700 page book by Thomas Piketty, Capital in the 21st Century, read Moore's 11 page essay and you'll learn plenty. In Violence: The Next Big Leap, Moore writes of the great experiment of domestication, drone warfare, and how the inevitable technological blind spots may pave the way to where it all began.

Another favorite is, Man With A Scarf, an essay about the legacy of artists in general and one fascinating one in particular, Lucian Freud - the grandson of Sigmund Freud and one of the most important painters out of England in the last century. A quote from that essay:

Guy Madison's marriage was far from perfect, but the birth of his daughter Ashley brought promise. However, just four months later, his wife took Ashley with her and conceived of an Action for a Divorce that included child abuse. A Judge, without ordering any investigation, imposed limited, supervised visitation. A Separation Agreement later increased visitation. Thus began Guy's Hellish odyssey of defending himself to Family Court, Court-appointed therapists and CPS caseworkers. A history followed of Guy getting visitation back, only to be thwarted by further accusations. Starting at the age of ten, Guy was no longer allowed to see his daughter--unless she wanted to. Unfortunately, she was brainwashed well by then. Guy continued his fight until Ashley was 18, no longer a minor. A "decision of interest" was made then that was published in his State's Law Journal. But it was too late for Guy and Ashley, their relationship ruined by false charges and the people who entertained them. Fighting for a Daughter is a true story that will frighten any parent. It is the culmination of the author's notes, CPS documents, and Court transcripts that span a quarter century.

Guy Madison's book `FIGHTING FOR A DAUGHTER: A Father's Journal of Battling False Abuse Charges in `Family' Court' is a hefty volume that not only spells out one of the more tragic instances of a father being refused the right to grow up with his daughter because of lies of abuse and sexual assault trumped up by his wife and her sister, but it also is a study of why marriages fail, why the systems meant to protect us form such falsified allegations so often fail, and why the court system is fallible as are the child protection societies and agencies.

The book is very long - intentionally so as Madison elected to include interview transcripts and court records and other documents to make his case - and the writing tends to bog down in loathing and disgust and becomes trying to stay with the book.

But then this is a true story, told precisely as it happened, and because of that it needs to be included in the law school libraries and Social Studies department where social workers are trained in dealing with child protection and child custody issues. There is harrowing truth here that we all should acknowledge in hopes of helping parents in the position of Guy Madison's trauma.

This book is also about the persistence, the essence of fatherly love, and the eventual triumph of a man so devoted to both his daughter and to justice that he stays with this nightmare until it becomes a resolved piece of history. based on a love which endures despite marital failures

This is a story that reveals the weaknesses built into the Family Court System where, through time and exposure, those responsible for preserving the sanctity of children's familial relations, stop paying close attention, stop caring about getting it right and often just "phone it in." The tragedy of this is that parents and children lose the right to the beauty of the parent-child relationship; based on a love which endures despite marital failures. Here, the manipulation of the system and the young child by an admittedly mentally unbalanced mother, who accused the father of sexually molesting his young female daughter is a study in self-serving evil to the exclusion of the even the well being of the child.

Fearful that her significant physical impairments, which necessitated almost yearly multi-month hospitalizations, might call into question her fitness to raise her infant daughter upon the break up of her marriage, Liz fabricate allegations of sexual impropriety against her husband in the divorce papers. With no inquiry into their validity, the court restricts Guy's visits with 4 month old Ashley to weekly supervised visits. Despite the results of in depth investigation into the charges negating their validity, the court doesnt grant reasonable visitation to Guy. It appears no one, save Guy, seemed to care. Until the child was four all visits were supervised. No amount of refutation of the sexual misconduct allegations seemed to persuade the court that regular visitation should be granted Guy. It was only upon a settlement that alternate weekend visits were established when she was 4.

At that point, the mother's family started working on the child, essentially telling her that the father must have touched her vagina. Though they made other claims, the child would only ever mimic that the father "touched me there." There was no detail, no upset on the part of the child, no behavior consistent with abuse by the child and multiple experts concluded that no sexual abuse occurred. In fact no one ever even learned from the child under what circumstances he touched her. Did he help her in the bathroom, dress her, lift her up by her legs? The child would never explain despite repeated inquiries. However, the court allowed the apparent and repeated maligning of the father to the child by the mother, her sister, her mother and other family members. Despite all the warning signs of intentional parental alientation, the mother was never penalized by the court. Thus, she was able to maintain custody and work on alienating the child from her father so he could never challenge custody. By the time the child was ten, she'd been told repeatedly that her father (oft referred to as the child molester) sexually molested her when she was younger, left them in poverty because he refused to give them any money (despite regular payment of court ordered support plus therapy payments), that the father harassed the mother by taking her to court, that the father was the reason she had to go to 'court ordered' therapy even though the mother (against the advises of all of the experts and the judge) did not think there was any reason for it, that the father physically abused the mother when they were married (another fiction), that Guy did not care about Ashley or LIz, that Guy wanted to take Ashley away from Liz so she wouldn't see her anymore, and, that since he had a new baby with his new wife, he didn't need Ashley anymore and didn't want to see her. Against this history, at 10 years old, the child,who had been an integral part of the father's new family including his wife's extended family,
Ashley decided not to speak to the father anymore.

The next 7 years were a study in too little too late. The court adjourned the matter for many months at a time despite the crisis of daughter having no interaction with the father and then at appearances made no real demands upon the mother to present the child for visitation with the father. The child refused repeatedly to articulate a single reason for her refusal to see the father; calling it a secret and promising to tell "next time" and then refusing again. This child, who knew too well that she was used as a pawn in the struggle between her parents, determined to participate in the manipulation and she became the star in a drama where at 10 she was given the power to decide custody.

She would tell the mother she did not want to see, speak to the father; the mother would allow it, fail to produce her in court. The court would verbally admonish, adjourn for lengthy periods and essentially allow the cycle to continue. At 10, the relationship could have been mended with real help from the system and the court appointed experts. The lack of effective action for a period of 4-5 years despite the father's every effort, made it impossible to remedy during the child's minority. The isolation from the father coupled with the regular poisonous commentary about Guy perfected the parental alienattion the maternal family had been working on for 14 years.

With heartbreaking steadfastness, Guy Madison maintained his efforts even after it seems they were making an eventual reconciliation less likely. It was only in her adulthood, after Ashley, who's mom committed suicide when she was 13, broke from her aunt who had become her guardian and the most aggressive maligner of Guy, did Ashley begin to understand what had been done to her and her father. She reached out and in her 20's reconciled with her dad.

This book should be read by everyone participating in the Family Court as a reminder that what they are doing effects lives at the most basic level. When you stop caring about the people involved and the work becomes a job for a paycheck, GET OUT and work somewhere else. It is too important to allow cynisism and overwhelm to set in.

One of the best series I've read in a long time

So happy I stumbled across this author. I read The Black Corleones and The Black Corleones 2 in 3 days. The story line kept me intrigued from start to finish. Can't wait for the third book. Bella is such a strong woman to endure the things that she has in her young life. For all who complained about the editing... the story is so much deeper where the typos can be overlooked. Keeping her lifted in prayer and wishing her the best in all of her endeavors. Keep doing your thing Bella.

This is a good book but the ending is wrong...Now I have to wait on another book...A lot of times the author takes too long to put the next book out...by this time I started another book....good job but I wish it would have ended differently...now I'm anxious...hurry with part 3

A scholarly romantic, Lesley Blanch (1904-2007) influenced and inspired generations of writers, readers and critics. She was a distinguished writer, artist, drama critic and features editor of British Vogue during World War II. Blanch was well ahead of her time and prescient in the way she attempted to bridge West and East − especially the West and Islam. In an interview with Shusha Guppy, she revealed that ‘General de Gaulle wrote me a lovely letter about The Sabres of Paradise, and I have heard that he said it was remarkable that a woman should be able to understand the battles so well and describe them so vividly.’ The author of twelve books, including The Wilder Shores of Love, Journey into the Mind's Eye, Pierre Loti and one novel, The Nine Tiger Man, she died in 2007. good read indeed, but full of mistakes.

Have to say, it reads fast and pleasant. You will not regret getting this book if you decide to do so. I withheld two stars because book claims to be historical, while there are quite a few inaccuracies.

I respect the admiration author has for Caucasian mountaineers (being descendent of such it is especially pleasant), but she definitely overromanticizes her hero(s). Shamyl is great enough figure and Chechens are brave enough people to be in need of overglorification.

Book tells a lot of legends and passes them as facts. Some most naïve, even silly XIX c stereotypes are restated without questioning - i.e. Khevsurs being descendents of Crusaders who passed through Caucasus in their due time!!! This lame assumption is based on the fact of cross being important symbol among Khevsurs (who in fact are Georgian mountaineers, just like Svans (Suanetians) who Blanch "mistakes" for Muslim North Caucasians (in fact they are Christian). Khevsur cross is pre-Christian symbol (sufficient archeological evidence for anyone who cares to check).

Blanch also retells number of legends told by Alexander Dumas in his "Adventures in the Caucasus" (without referring to the source!) And names some of those legends (I remember two: Shete, child-tongue cutter; and a father who cut up his son's dead body into 70 pieces and sent to his relatives as a request for revenge...) as "Chechen stories", while Dumas tells them as Tushetian ones (another Georgian Christian tribe).

Either she is mistaken, or she purposefully mislocates the origin of characters in order to draw a portrait of Chechens the way she wants. It is OK to be mistaken and I hope it is just a mistake, because I really don't like when writer misleads the reader...

There is not much research done and there are very few books written about Caucasian history in any language. Despite what I said above, this one is probably the best among English books I have come across. So, I recommend it to everyone, especially if you are not a history buff, but a sucker for good romantic story about bravery and glory and freedom, etc. We may say, story is "based on true story". Enjoy it!

Lion of Dhagestan

The reviews I've read so far fail to emphasize that this book, while it certainly covers much of the history of the Caucuses in the latter half of the 19th century, is in no small part a biography of Imam Shamyl, "The Lion of Dhagestan", and his role as the leader of what was referred to as "The Mureed Wars". Shamyl was a legendary, charismatic leader who, through the power of his Islamic faith, and with the added dimension of being son-in-law of one of the great Shaykhs of the Naqshbandi Sufi order (Jamaluddin Ghumuqi), united the various tribes and peoples of this region to fight off the great Russian Bear for nearly 25 years. It is an epic tale of heroism and tragedy on a personal and cultural level, and will grip the reader as they follow the exploits and the battles that are still to this day legendary in the Caucuses.

Chechens vs. Russians Round 1

In the nineteenth century the Russian Empire was expanding east and south. It annexed all of Georgia between 1801 and 1804, but in between Russia and its new acquisition lay the Caucasus Mountains, a row of giant peaks lying between the Black Sea and the Caspian. Among these peaks lived numerous peoples speaking a myriad languages, mostly but not all, Muslim. They never agreed to be part of the Tsarist imperium, but their raids and depredations gave the Russians no peace. The Tsar decided that they must be conquered. This was easier said than done. It is estimated that over the next half century, the Russians lost half a million men to disease and in the endless battles with the guerrilla-style Caucasian fighters who, disunited at first, later united under a single, Islamic flag---the flag of a formidable individual named Shamyl. Shamyl, known in Europe as `the Lion of Daghestan', surrendered at last in 1859 and finished his days under house arrest in Kaluga, Russia. [He actually died on the haj in Arabia.] The Caucasians were subdued, but not forever. In World War II, some of them welcomed the Germans as liberators and were exiled en masse afterwards to the barren wastes of Central Asia. After the end of the Soviet Union, Caucasians again rose up, resulting in two more wars between Russia and tiny Chechnya. The struggle continues in the region, if at a lower level. Even the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013 had its roots in this endless struggle against domination.

Blanch picked a topic not often discussed in the West. Growing up, we never heard of Chechens, Daghestan, Cherkess, or Kabards. Shamyl was totally unknown, as was his effort to unite all the Caucasian peoples as Murids (fighters) under his flag.. If you'd like to read about it, you might try this book, but I'll give you a warning. This is Romantic History with capitalization intended. Can this writer ever mention a market without lovingly speaking of spices and silks ? (Whatever happened to buckets and nails ?) Can she avoid detailing the beauty of female costume in the Russian court, the colorful, dashing uniforms, the malachite columns in some palaces, the troves of pearls, emeralds, and amethysts ? Not once, but every time. Do you like sentences that speak of "...the dark force of Shamyl who broods behind everything, a mysterious and satanic majesty enthroned among his mountain peaks." ? What about "...that densely dark glossy hair of the Asiatics, which seems plumage rather than hair..."? Talk about exoticizing "the Other" !! Then there is Shamyl, so many times, "his pale face inscrutable, framed in its dark beard, scarlet with henna, vivid against his sombre black bourka, and huge chieftain's turban. His slit-eyes still glittered as he surveyed his threatened mountain kingdom." Oi gavult ! An Armenian appears...."he possessed the astuteness of all his race." If this sort of lush verbiage and stereotype is your bag, you're going to love this book. I felt it should have been better-edited, her super-romantic tendencies reined in, and more attention paid to standard spelling of names, and getting her facts straight. Many phrases and sentences are repeated. But, you know, it's an interesting subject.

The only way to really understand what made T.R. tick.

Outstanding! This book is a tome of philosophy, adventure, intrigue, and above all, inspiration. Notwithstanding these encomia however, the reader should beware before making a hegira into its noble pages that this autobiography does not follow the traditional structure of a "biography." Rather it can be described as being a compendium of T.R.'s philosophy on life. The true strength of its pages being found in how T.R.'s experiences and actions staunchly uphold and support his 'vigor of life' and probity which he so often addressed as being fundamental to all good Americans. Accordingly, I suggest a first-time reader of T.R. would be best served by initially reading a more "objective" biography of T.R. (I suggest Nathan Miller's Theodore Roosevelt, A Life) in order to become familiar with the events and time frames involved. This will allow the reader to more appreciate the nature, values and beliefs of the great man as told in this book by the ultimate authority, himself.
Along with being completely inspired by a man of such high moral values, the factual anecdotes related in this book comfort you in the knowledge that this hero practiced what he preached. In a speech by his own hand, T.R. embodied his own life; "The credit belongs to the man in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood;...who strives valiantly...who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who have never known neither victory nor defeat."
T.R. was a naturalist, legislator, cowboy, businessman, soldier, author, conservationist, U.S. President, world explorer, and above all an inspirational "doer of deeds." This book eloquently tells the reader why he felt he needed to perform these deeds and what was going through his mind all the while.

A Great Chronicler of His Own Life and Times

Having read several books about TR, I have heard a lot about his writing. Other than reading some of his letters and quotes in books, I had never read any of his work but picked his autobiography up from a used bookstore. I was looking for the Naval War of 1812, but ended up with this instead. I was not disappointed. Some parts of the book definitely dragged and if your patience for legislative maneuvering prior to 1900 in the New York legislature is limited, you might want to skip to the back half of the book. But what comes through in the book are TR's passions: books, the outdoors, conserving the outdoors, and the Navy.

The first half of the book is essentially told chronologically. But when TR gets to his presidency, he tells the tale thematically. There are chapters on conservation, trust busting and other industrial issues, and two chapters on international affairs. Unfortunately, the book ends with his presidency and does not go into TR's world travels or his comeback bid in 1912. TR's dislike for his hand picked successor, President Taft, permeates the presidency chapters.

As with any autobiography, especially a presidential one, TR views himself as always right and his opponents as always wrong. His views on Taft are a good example of that. But that can hardly be viewed as a failing of the book, since that is a standard characteristic of these types of books.

If you want a first hand view of the man in the arena, what he tried to do and how he tried to lead his life, read the book.

"I have a thought about why this particular memoir, of all memoirs, deserves to be read, indeed, must be read. World-wide, Anne Frank is considered to be the authentic voice from within the Holocaust. Her diary is indeed precious and incredibly touching. And yet it ends with her deportation to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen where she dies a gruesome death. That is not part of her diary. The reader is left in a void. From that same hideous place that claims her life emerges a little boy to continue the story. Joseph's voice originates from within Bergen-Belsen, and perhaps poses the questions and challenges to G-d that Anne might have posed, had she survived. His story and her story merge. These two youngsters from Holland, Anne forever a teenager, Joseph approaching the status of elder, provide a perspective of unusual insight from within the Holocaust, and from within survival. Surely Joseph's sensitive portrayal of this brief period of his life illustrates dramatically that for Jewish children, liberation was not particularly liberating. About the Author
Joseph Polak is an infant survivor of the Holocaust, during which time he was a prisoner at two concentration camps: Westerbork and Bergen-Belsen. He has published extensively in leading popular and scholarly periodicals and newspapers, including the Boston Globe, Commentary, Jewish Law Studies, Judaism, and Tradition. He is an assistant professor of public health (health law) at Boston University School of Public Health; the rabbi emeritus of the Florence and Chafetz Hillel House at Boston University; and the chief justice at the Rabbinical Court of Massachusetts. He lives in Brookline, Massachusetts. Elie Wiesel is a Romanian-born Holocaust survivor, author of 57 books, and winner of the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize. He lives in New York.

A Poignant Exploration of the Meaning of Memory

This is a powerful and compelling memoir that is unlike any other Holocaust-survivor story you have ever read. The author spent his infancy in two Nazi concentration camps. Now in his seventies, he has spent his life dealing with the aftereffects of the horror that happened to him but of which he has no conscious memory. His exploration of the psychology of this phenomenon is magnificent. This book is a slender volume, but there is so much more in it than you'll ever find in most large books.

A book that not only discusses the "whats" and "hows" of the Holocaust, but also the "whys" from the perspective of maintaining faith in God knowing He was a bystander as 1.5 million children were murdered while simultaneously internalizing survivor's guilt. Rabbi Polak's experience is an essential bridge from the stories of adult survivors detailing their memories, and the future generations processing the Holocaust without living witnesses. This memoir is critical to a 21st century analysis of Nazi horror.
