I must have been a very simple little fellow when I first went to the school. A boy of the name of Garnett took me into a cake shop one day, and bought some cakes for which he did not pay, as the shopman trusted him. When we came out I asked him why he did not pay for them, and he instantly answered, "Why, do you not know that my uncle left a great sum of money to the town on condition that every tradesman should give whatever was wanted without payment to anyone who wore his old hat and moved [it] in a particular manner?" and he then showed me how it was moved. He then went into another shop where he was trusted, and asked for some small article, moving his hat in the proper manner, and of course obtained it without payment. When we came out he said, "Now if you like to go by yourself into that cake-shop (how well I remember its exact position) I will lend you my hat, and you can get whatever you like if you move the hat on your head properly." I gladly accepted the generous offer, and went in and asked for some cakes, moved the old hat and was walking out of the shop, when the shopman made a rush at me, so I dropped the cakes and ran for dear life, and was astonished by being greeted with shouts of laughter by my false friend Garnett. I can say in my own favour that I was as a boy humane, but I owed this entirely to the instruction and example of my sisters. I doubt indeed whether humanity is a natural or innate quality. I was very fond of collecting eggs, but I never took more than a single egg out of a bird's nest, except on one single occasion, when I took all, not for their value, but from a sort of bravado. I had a strong taste for angling, and would sit for any number of hours on the bank of a river or pond watching the float; when at Maer (The house of his uncle, Josiah Wedgwood.) I was told that I could kill the worms with salt and water, and from that day I never spitted a living worm, though at the expense probably of some loss of success. Once as a very little boy whilst at the day school, or before that time, I acted cruelly, for I beat a puppy, I believe, simply from enjoying the sense of power; but the beating could not have been severe, for the puppy did not howl, of which I feel sure, as the spot was near the house. This act lay heavily on my conscience, as is shown by my remembering the exact spot where the crime was committed. It probably lay all the heavier from my love of dogs being then, and for a long time afterwards, a passion. Dogs seemed to know this, for I was an adept in robbing their love from their masters. I remember clearly only one other incident during this year whilst at Mr. Case's daily school,—namely, the burial of a dragoon soldier; and it is surprising how clearly I can still see the horse with the man's empty boots and carbine suspended to the saddle, and the firing over the grave. This scene deeply stirred whatever poetic fancy there was in me.

About the Author
Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

Warning! This is the Censored Version!!!

Darwin's family had Charles' biography censored, and Nora Barlow's edition is the only complete version available. If it doesn't say "edited by Nora Barlow," be aware that it is not the unexpurgated edition, the one intended by Charles. That is my reason for giving this edition 3 stars. Otherwise, Barlow's edition gets 5 stars. There is much that is controversial and interesting that isn't in this edition, so I highly recommend that you drop a few bucks on that edition. This is a sufficient ersatz, if need be, but you are missing out.

Excellent and Free Kindle Version of Darwin's Autobiography

This free version of "The Autobiography of Charles Darwin" for the Kindle is put together well and offers readers some fascinating insights into one of the most influential thinkers in human history. As Amanda Dawson noted in her review, this is the version edited by one of Darwin's sons. The unedited version is much more colorful. Despite that, this is an excellent resource. It's free and, unlike many public domain books, it's crafted together well. There are no dangling sentences and odd paragraph breaks. Recommended despite not being the complete version.

Not the "complete" Autobiography

Unfortunately, this is the posthumously published version of the Autobiography from which quotes about Darwin's evolving disillusionment with Christianity were omitted by his son and his widow.

This book is a beautiful, sometimes tragic series of stories of fighters we all recognize. This is more than a "Where are they now?" report. The author is a former boxer and has great empathy and love for his subjects. The fact that he did his research on less than a shoestring budget just reinforces that author cared deeply for boxing and its heroes.

Great read, well written and inciteful!

A great read! A book full of interesting people, their stories and all well written. But best of all I actually learnt something about a sport that I already thought I knew a bit about. Altogether, this makes it stand well above your average sporting book.

Born to win, paid to lose

Ever seen a fighter with a ridiculously bad record like four wins and a hundred losses, and wonder what keeps him going? Wonder no more.

This book does a great job of exposing the underbelly of the boxing scene. Journeymen, contra popular belief, are skilled boxers who are many times better than their younger, fresher opponents, but are paid essentially to "carry" the other guys and help pad out their records. The author strikes just the right balance between letting the fighters speak for themselves and leavening the work with his own asides and commentary. The book focuses primarily on the U.K. boxing scene, but the themes it recounts are universal, and pretty much mandatory reading for boxing fans, as well as anyone with a general interest in learning good definitions of the concepts of "resilience" and "courage" or that intangible quality so important in boxing, "heart."

Some of the profiles in "Journeymen" are funny, including a tale about a pugilist who was drinking in the local pub when he got the call that he needed to lace up the gloves. Other stories are tragic and downright harrowing, like the one about twin brother journeymen who committed suicide...when their records featured the exact same ratio of losses to wins.

The book makes a plea for less corruption in boxing, not by strident argument, but just by letting the cheated boxers speak for themselves. Turley has done these hard men an incredible service by bringing them out of the shadows of the boxing world and into the light. You owe it to yourself and to them to read this book. Recommended.

Over the past three decades, China has undergone a historic transformation. Once illegal, its private business sector now comprises 30 million businesses employing more than 200 million people and accounting for half of China's Gross Domestic Product. Yet despite the optimistic predictions of political observers and global business leaders, the triumph of capitalism has not led to substantial democratic reforms.

In Capitalism without Democracy, Kellee S. Tsai focuses on the activities and aspirations of the private entrepreneurs who are driving China's economic growth. The famous images from 1989 of China's new capitalists supporting the students in Tiananmen Square are, Tsai finds, outdated and misleading. Chinese entrepreneurs are not agitating for democracy. Most are working eighteen-hour days to stay in business, while others are saving for their one child's education or planning to leave the country. Many are Communist Party members. "Remarkably," Tsai writes, "most entrepreneurs feel that the system generally works for them."

Tsai regards the quotidian activities of Chinese entrepreneurs as subtler and possibly more effective than voting, lobbying, and protesting in the streets. Indeed, major reforms in China's formal institutions have enhanced the private sector's legitimacy and security in the absence of mobilization by business owners. In discreet collaboration with local officials, entrepreneurs have created a range of adaptive informal institutions, which in turn, have fundamentally altered China's political and regulatory landscape. Based on years of research, hundreds of field interviews, and a sweeping nationwide survey of private entrepreneurs funded by the National Science Foundation, Capitalism without Democracy explodes the conventional wisdom about the relationship between economic liberalism and political freedom.

Putting it in a nutshell, this book has contributed to three major findings in the study of political economy in China. First, economic liberalization in China since 1976 has not resulted in the emergence of democratic regime or the decline of the authoritarian state. According to Professor Tsai, private entrepreneurs in China are not nuts about democracy and researchers cannot view private entrepreneurs as a homogeneous class because of their diverse identities, interests, and values in politics. Second, widespread apathy amongst private entrepreneurs in China towards democracy does not mean that they have an acquiescent nature. They tend to adopt different coping strategies rather than instigate virulent opposition against the regime or demand regime transition when various formal institutions constrain their business activities. The so-called "coping strategies" result in a variety of "adaptive informal institutions" being established in different economic regions in China. Based on hundreds of in-depth interviews and nationwide survey of private entrepreneurs, Professor Tsai divides them into five key types; namely Wenzhou model, Sunan model, Zhujiang model, state-dominated model, and Limited development model. For instance, private entrepreneurs in Wenzhou engaged in a variety of innovative financing practices to set up and expand their businesses which were outside of the state banking system. Private entrepreneurs in Guangdong province sought to establish fake foreign enterprises in order to enjoy policy advantages including tax breaks and preferential access to land. Third, the near ubiquity of adaptive informal institutions becomes an endogenous force that has prompted the government to generate institutional change without regime change. However, such institutional change to react to the existence of adaptive informal institutions cannot be likely to become sources of democratization. Professor Tsai maintains that private entrepreneurs in China show no intention of agitating for democracy but capitalism can exist without democracy, provided that the Chinese government can attend to adaptive informal institutions that complement endogenous institutional change.

Conventional wisdom says that China's economic revival will eventually lead to democracy. Others see the rise of income inequality and increased corruption as rallying points. However, don't expect a "No taxation without representation" protest in China, says Tsai. The bulk of the book relies on over 300 interviews with Chinese entrepreneurs (peddlers to CEOs on the Forbes list of the wealthiest in the world), officials, intellectuals, and local bureaucrats over the 2001-2005.

Some of the outside hope for democracy is based on stores of private entrepreneurs helping out demonstrators at Tienanmen Square. Those instances, however, haven't grown or been sustained. Tsai believes that because Chinese entrepreneurs are such a diverse group (some were former farmers, others previously government officials) they will not likely unite on this issue. Further, they have proven much more likely to use informal channels for solving problems than the legal system or political participation. Only 5% regularly rely on more assertive modes of dispute resolution such as "appealing to local government or higher authorities" or "appealing through judicial courts."

Capitalists are now encouraged to join the CCP, and many have. Flexibility to overlook rules also relieves potential pressure for change from business people. Those with the resources to fund change, China's 106 billionaires, are diversifying overseas with both their investments and children's' education - eg. sending them to the U.S. with hopes that they will become white-collar professionals or government officials rather than continuing the family work as business owners.

The only movement that posed a potentially serious challenge to the regime was the short-lived China Democracy Party (CDP). In 1998 local party committees of the CDP were established in 24 provinces and cities. But authorities promptly detained, arrested, or exiled CDP leaders, which effectively thwarted further efforts to establish a central-level CDP. Similarly, the crackdown on Falun Gong in 1999-2000 and the repression of Tibetan protesters in 2008 provide compelling evidence that the CCP will control and eliminate political opposition.

Only 22% of Tsai's sample think the pace of reform in China has been too slow, while 51% think it has been just right.

Bottom Line: The belief that all regimes will at some point become liberal-democracies is a fantasy.

Markarian provides masterful translation

Markarian then provides comprehensive biographies of the 13 martyred writers—which include Rupen Zartarian, Kegham Parseghian, Yerukhan (Yervant Srmakeshkanlian), Hrant (Melkon Gurjian), and Taniel Varoujan—and highlights their literary characteristics and accomplishments.

Perhaps the biggest highlight in Markarian’s anthology is his masterful translation of the writers’ works. The excerpts are carefully selected and are wide-ranging in literary style and genre—from plays, (like Smpad Pyurad’s “The Eagle of Avarayr”) to poems (Siamanto’s “The Dance”) and both fiction (Krikor Zohrab’s The Burden of Responsibility) and non-fiction (Hrant’s Lives of Bantookht).

Markarian has done an exceptional job in presenting nearly all facets of Armenian literature at the time. The translations of the original Armenian versions are done meticulously, and are vital to the success of this book.

Highly thought-provoking

An excellent book about globalization and how it could be made into a more just and sustainable form of economic and political integration. The discussions presented by leading international scholars and activists provide a thought-provoking overview of the many challenges presented by globalization. The book's themes include economic development, democracy, international organizations, labour rights, social challenges of globalization, poverty and inequality, and the environment. A superb critical introduction to some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Out of the Frying Pan...Into the Fire

In volumes 1&2 of this series, Mike Lazares compiled true Vietnam War stories on the heroism displayed by so many pilots and air crews from all branches of service during that period in American history. Each story was written by the men who faced these perils. But in this volume, he goes beyond these tales of bravado by adding memories from some wives and mothers, who in there own way had to live in daily uncertainties of the safety of their beloved aviators. If you want to see what it was like to sit in the cockpit of a Huey helicopter under fire while delivering reinforcement and supplies, to experience the fear after being shot down in enemy territory, or to laugh at the warped-sense of battlefield humor that pilots exhibited in order to maintain their sanity, this is the book for you. Do you want to provide an educational gift for a friend, or to preserve a piece of American history for your children and grandchildren that is not taught in public schools? First of all: THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. From one veteran to another. I really enjoyed reading all of Michael's books, I really hope he writes some more. All of the authors of the Vietnam time period, I believe are sharing their experiences and hoping that it is helpful therapy and therefore really hard to do. For the sake of all of you I sincerely hope that it is helping you. I can tell you that I suffer from PTSD, and alot of this reading is helping me. Thank you Michael for what you are doing for all of us.

As the third book in a series it continues to bring enjoyable stories from pilots and crew. Your like reading the various aspects and perspectives from men serving in different capacities yet all flying in helicopters. Filled with everything from action to humor you can't go wrong reading this book and it's multitude of stories.

The Will’s Journey, Solving the Enigma of suffering and Fear
This book takes us to the basics, and tells us that any event is not just the consequent of its immediate cause, but rather the product of a series of causes that could go back many years and beyond. If we really apply that insight to the major events of our lives, especially that cause us suffering and fear, it brings deep understanding, revelation, relief, peace of mind and ability to cope and accept it. It will at last dawn on us that what happened is what meant to be, it couldn’t be otherwise. The book takes us step by step from first moment of creation to present event.
The will’s Journey is a book based on Schopenhauer’s concept of the “Will” that mainly says, that it is the driving force within humans, living beings and inanimate matter or natural forces, differently objectified. This idea has been developed further in the first book of the author “The Will’s Harmonic Motion, The completion of Schopenhauer Philosophy, second edition”
The book tells us that our knowledge of the will came to existence only after the will starts to stir and move thru our moral /immoral actions. Movement of the will means trying to balance disturbances which is immoral events. Immoral events need humans with diluted intellect to perform it. From that we are in constant suffering and fear.
The book has to provide a very brief account of Schopenhauer’s concept of the will to facilitate the understanding of the subject. Also it provided in the introduction a chart to summaries the concept of the Will’s Journey, which gave a comprehensive view on the subject.
The book dealt with the subject of suffering and fear in a deep, novel, realistic and actually the only way to interpret these phenomena. There are few linguistic mistakes. It is easy reading, clear and straight to the point, and for that it deserves five stars.

Roy Kerr continues to amaze and fascinate all avid baseball fans with his spectacular ability to find and describe so vividly those forgotten "Heroes of the Past" who actually made the game of baseball as exciting as it is today. An enjoyable walk through the baseball world of the 1880's and 1890's. Kerr provides some interesting insight on how the baseball owners of the 19th century exploited the players under their control to such an extent that a Players League was set-up for one year to compete on the major league level with the National League and the American Association.

It was a different game when Sam Thompson came to bat for the Detroit Wolverines and later the Phillies. Pitchers stood as close as 50 feet. A fair ball hit over the fence was still in play. Umpires might take advice from players before making a call, and one year walks counted as hits. However, players such as Sam Thompson would help the game mature, to become the one we know today. In Sam's case he always did that with style and a professional manner..
Sam was noted for his bat. He should have been. He is the only player in Major League history to hit back-to-back bases-loaded triples, and he held numerous hitting records. However, in an era when fielding was done either barehanded or with a glove that offered as much protection as a pancake, he was also an outstanding fielder. He may have had a record setting four outfielder-to-catcher assists in one game. He could steal a base, bunt, or do just about anything else you would ask him to do, and he would do it with class. He was a great ballplayer, and a superb human being..
Roy Kerr has once again brought to light one of the great too-often-forgotten heros of the nineteenth century baseball diamond. He shows us Sam the player, and the Sam who was able through baseball to escape the monotony of nineteenth century life that was the fate of most rural and small town men of his day. Kerr reveals how Thompson and the stars of his other baseball biographies offered something to America that at least for a few hours in an afternoon could provide an alternative to the ordinary existence that was theirs most of every day. He shows us why the game has been so important in American culture and history, and why its challengers will probably never surpass it, at least not as long as the game can produce those in the tradition of Big Sam Thompson.

Forgotten Hollywood And Its Disappearing Landscape

I read this book in its electronic galley format compliments of NetGalley and the opinions expessed here are mine alone.

Actor and author Robert Wagner teases in this book's dedication by telling his reader that no one in his family has ever heard these stories. A cute teaser which sounds naughty but in fact is innocently probably true. This book is not a celebrity tell all. Actually, it starts out describing in broad terms a Hollywood/Los Angeles of long ago that is seen through the eyes of Wagner. A transplant from Detroit, Wagner ventured west with his family in the late 1930's as a young child. The Wagners built a home in the Bel Air area which even back then reflected a certain prejudice against movie people. Wagner was lucky. He had yet to become an actor. Wagner describes an idyllic life with expansive vistas populated by nature and an occasional bridle path where he rode horses. In his youth, he would also spend time riding public transportation that was cheap, convenient, and well planned. Believe it, LA actually had a good transportation system back in the day. The air was smog free and you could gaze from the mountains to view Catalina some 20 miles offshore. Back then there was no Hotel Bel Air. It was where his family and others boarded their horses. Bel Air still had a small town feel back then.

After recalling the Los Angeles he came to know and love as his adopted hometown, he grew up and had some contact with film people through jobs he had as a teen. The reader starts getting an idea of how the celebs lived from the descriptive simplicity of a Cape Cod actor 'Jim' Cagney had built in contrast to a huge and over-the-complex actress Marion Davies resided in at the edge of Santa Monica on the beach. The Davies estate had all but disappeared by 1956 save for a 'cottage' that was still there the last time I looked. If you've ever seen that cottage you can understand why it's essential to have someone like Wagner to tell you about it.

Wagner and his co-author Scott Eyman dug into the Hollywood landscape with images of former actor turned interior decorator William Haines transforming mere houses into homes for people like Joan Crawford and Carole Lombard. The mansion/beach houses of Louis B. Mayer, Norma Shearer, and Douglas Fairbanks still remain but as Wagner cautions they have been remodeled to death by subsequent owners to reflect the changing times. The eateries and night clubs that Wagner enjoyed as a young star have fallen by the wayside with only a couple of exceptions. As I read this, I actually found myself yearning for things I had never known except from books. The overall effect was intoxicating as it filled my mind with heady details of a more glamorous time.

Wagner imparts beyond details (which were many) his memories of people he knew. While many were known commodities from the film community such as Norma Shearer and Clark Gable, it was often the more obscure personalities that made for good reading. Included were restaurateur and film rag publisher William Wilkerson who was a hard gambling guy and former Beverly Hills Hotel owner Hernando Courtright. Wagner made mention of Louis B. Mayer and his two warring daughters Irene Selznick and Edie Goetz. These gals made de Havilland and Fontaine seem like almost a congenial sister act. Edie at one time was a grand hostess and the Goetz home was punctuated with great art that no single collector could amass today. Irene was the literary sister who escaped to NYC and entertained intellectual types. While never getting nasty or snipe-ish, Wagner is very tactful yet honest and exactly what I'd expect in this charming memoir that often has his crisp recollections colliding with pricey real estate. Of particular interest to me was Wagner's love of architecture. LA at one time had more crazy and wonderful architecture than any other place in this country. Back then the golden age of films was still in full swing and the movie industry drove the LA economy. TV and digital media would put a huge dent into the studios profits and viability.

Overall, this is a delightful and informative book that is wonderfully descriptive and visual. I enjoyed it and was surprised that it kept pace throughout. Anyone familiar with LA architecture or the golden age of Hollywood will like this book. My only criticism is that I wish it had more pictures.

Wonderful memories

I saw a review of this book and read it in two days. I have nothing to do with the movies, except watching them, mostly old ones. However, I have lived in Los Angeles since 1956 and the places Mr Wagner mentions are familiar. I remember Ciro's Nightclub although I was never in there. His memories of Bel Air and Hollywood bring back my own memories of when Los Angeles was a delightful city. The smog was here when I arrived so I did not see it as he did before the age of the auto. I remember the red cars although I never rode one. In 1961, I walked up the fairway of Bel Air Country Club during the Bel Air Fire to see if my in-laws house was still there. It wasn't and we saw other houses on fire along the fairway with no one around them. The firemen were miles away trying to create fire breaks.

I was in Don the Beachcomber one night in a party that included Jane Russell and her husband Bob Waterfield, retired football star. A fan came up to her and asked for her autograph and then called Waterfield, "Mr Russell." I didn't crack a smile.

It is fun to read about these places and these people, most of whom were gone by the time I came along. Still, we did have dinners at Scandia, preferably on Tuesday when the "Chef's Special Lamb" dish was served. I still don't know what was in it but it was the best dish I have ever eaten. I saw Van Heflin in there one night.

The description of the real casino that Eddie Mars' roadhouse, in "The Big Sleep," was based on, explained something to me. I remember when the Hollywood Freeway ended at Lankersheim Boulevard but didn't know where that real casino was located. Raymond Chandler was as much a historian of old Los Angeles as Dashiell Hammett was of San Francisco. I have figured out some of his locations in a city that has changed over the years far more than San Francisco has. Wagner writes about Fatty Arbuckle's home on West Adams Boulevard in 1920s Los Angeles. When I was in college, that house was the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house. It's gone now.

Wagner writes about all the old restaurants that are no longer here. He mentions Perino's, a very elegant place on Wilshire Boulevard that drew as many businessmen as movie industry people. When I was a cardiac surgery resident at Good Samaritan Hospital, on Wilshire a few blocks from Perino's, a wealthy patient in a corner suite ordered all her meals catered to the hospital from Perino's. When she went home after her successful open heart surgery, her husband complained that the hospital had not deducted the cost of meals from her bill.

The book is short and a delightful read. I may even read his biography, which I have not seen. I do remember seeing him and his wife Natalie Wood at Catalina Island many times although we never met. By that time they had a big powerboat named "Splendour" as I recall. I was more into sailing. The book is especially enjoyable for those who are familiar with Los Angeles in its days of splendor. They are gone with most of those people.

Simply Marvelous!

This was a delicious book of Old Hollywood - truly the Golden Age. It is not only a must-read for any film buff but for anyone interested in the creation and architecture of many of the landmarks in Southern California. Making it even better, is the, often, first-hand accounting of Robert Wagner, a gracious man with a way to tell a story about places he has been and people he has known. He intuitively tells us the fun stories and facts that make these golden stars come alive and he writes, much as a fan, telling us the things that we really want to know. I especially appreciated the way that he treats all of his subjects, with respect and love, none of the snarky commentary that so often passes for wit these days. He has truly bridged the gap from the early days to today. I only wish that so many of these places that he tells about were still here. This is just a grand read and Robert Wagner gives us an example again of a life well-lived much as he did in "Pieces of My Heart."
