About the Author
Kit DesLauriers is a world-class athlete—sponsored by the outdoor-apparel company The North Face, as well as Dynastar, Smith Sport Optics, Dynafit, and others—but also wife, mother, and woman on a mission to serve the planet by raising awareness of climate change and working to preserve and protect the wild habitats that still exist. In her self-appointed role of “planetary park ranger,” she's an ambassador for 1% for the Planet, member of Protect Our Winters Riders Alliance, and board member for the American Alpine Club and Keep Yellowstone Nuclear Free. Trained as a Wilderness First Responder and holding a Level Three Avalanche Certification, Kit approaches the mountain environment with great respect. If an observer thinks she is an "adrenaline junkie," Kit explains, "it's actually a lot more about risk management because I just love being out there."
In 2014, Kit made her third expedition to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. While climbing and skiing the two highest mountains in the remote Brooks Range, she collected scientific GPS data and measurements that were used to answer the geographic question, "What is the highest mountain in the US arctic?" For this recent merging of adventure and science, as well as for her ongoing career achievements, Kit has been named one of National Geographic's 2015 Adventurers of the Year.
She lives in Teton Village, WY, with her husband Rob and their two young daughters.

In my next life I want to be Kit's friend. Hid the book in my lap and finished reading it at work as I could not put it down. Wept at the end with exhaustion and relief - felt like I had been up and down those mountains with her. If you are looking for a fantastic adventure story featuring a woman who is not only courageous beyond words but also someone you would like to sit down and have a glass of wine with - READ THIS! Wow. Thanks Kit for sharing your story but more for sharing the inside of your head as well...both so incredibly inspiring!

Fell in love with Higher Love

This book is very well written, being an easy read but with enough detail that you feel in some ways you are there with her. My heart raced as she described kick turns down gullies and couloirs, and I could totally relate to her descriptions of self-doubt followed by mental confidence building as she faced challenge after challenge. A real page turner, I couldn't put it down. Recommended to anyone facing challenges in life, HIGHLY recommended as a source of good tales for mountaineers / backcountry skiers, but a definitive MUST READ for outdoorsy women.

Big adventures are often comprised of several mini-adventures—those fleeting moments of close calls and near-misses that could have easily evolved into life-threatening situations. But isn’t unforeseen drama an ever-present, and arguably necessary ingredient to an adventure?
“Higher Love” is a personal account of how Kit DesLauriers made good on her plan to ski the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Known as the Seven Summits, the list is composed of Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson Massif, and Kosciuszko. DesLauriers is a former pro patroller at Telluride ski area and the third woman to climb and ski the Grand Teton in Wyoming.
Yet, even as a certified wilderness EMT, Rescue 3 international rope rescue instructor, and helicopter rescue technician, she was often forced to alter or abandon her well-calculated plans once she was on the mountain putting one ski boot in front of the other.
The story grows richer with every peak. Her husband Rob accompanied her on most of the climbs, and on few occasions they ventured right next to death. DesLauriers writes:
Here I was desperately trying to make all the right judgment calls about how to handle this absolute-worse-case scenario, and out of the blue I had this logical, objective vision, as if the rational part of me had already accepted that Rob’s death was inevitable…We’d entered into this climb knowing that the descent was risky. This was the life we’d both chosen, and we’d agreed not to regret living it.
It’s an easy temptation for adventure writers, whether knowingly or not, to weave in slightly exaggerated heroics. Yet what DesLauriers shares in “Higher Love” is 552 pages of unabashed honesty about the thoughts and emotions running through her head as she endeavors to become the first person to ski the Seven Summits.
The book includes more than 40 color photographs and a bevy of quotes that we can all draw from to help fuel our next alpine adventures. At the time of this post, DesLauriers was with a crew adventuring to ski Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world.
