enlightening
By J. cain
I call this book enlightening because altogether too many people regard Kansas City as just another city in the "fly over states." It is inconceivable to the folks of the coastal states that a Mafia family even existed in Kansas City, let alone one that was well organized and with a significant national footprint.
Furthermore, who better to tell this story than a man who went nose to nose with them and was instrumental in bringing about not only their demise, but top Mob people in Chicago and Milwaukee.
Author Bill Ouseley had me up way past my bedtime. I could not put the book down.

Excellent read, even if you're not from KC
By Scott Quinn
William Ouseley has produced an informative, entertaining and well-written account of the KC mafia in its heyday. Ouseley, a former FBI agent who retired as supervisor of the Organized Crime Squad in KC, brings a unique and personal perspective into the very insular world of the mob, and his ability to craft a compelling narrative is no doubt the result of his intimate understanding of the workings of the mafia as well as the major and minor players who made it happen.

Ouseley does an excellent job not only of telling the story of the mafia in KC from roughly 1960 to 1982, he weaves a couple of storylines throughout the book, making it even more enjoyable for the reader. The book moves at a brisk pace as a result. Ouseley wisely includes dozens of photographs of most (but, alas, not all) of the key figures, on both sides of the law. A couple of the photographs are real show-stoppers--not too graphic but definitely not the kind of photographs you normally see. There also is the best photograph in the world of a perp walk, starring Cork Civella (p. 221).

Mistakes and typos are very few: Carl Spero's age at the time of his death is listed as 41 and 44; the "c" in "Kansas City" is not capitalized; and the transcripts are sometimes corrected, sometimes not. In all, there is not much to quibble over.

So, why do I claim that Mobsters in Our Midst will interest even people who are not from Kansas City? Firstly, Ouseley's insider's knowledge of the mafia is transferrable to any other city's mafia, more or less. The individual rackets will vary due to geography, climate (political and environmental), and size of the city, but the organizational structure--especially the rules that keep everything together--does not change much from city to city. Secondly, the Vegas casino skimming racket is, to me at least, endlessly fascinating. You can't make this stuff up. Ouseley does not delve too deeply into that chapter of the KC mob's story, but he definitely fills in some gaps about it. Thirdly, it is interesting how many times luck plays a major factor in law enforcement's success, and it is amazing to think that if the mob had been just a bit more careful about not using phones, the skimming operation could have gone on for years.

But it is what Mobsters in Our Midst does not do--put me, for one, at ease, despite the cheery ending--that should cause each one of us to pause and think about how we marshal and deploy our resources to fight crime, since most cities in the U.S. have travelled the same path of urban decay, suburban sprawl, etc. Ouseley is complimentary of the "reformers" who ran out the Pendergast regime and substituted a new structure that enabled slightly less corruption but much more incompetence. Ouseley is proud of his actions and with law enforcement in general and seems confident that the mafia as it once existed is long gone in KC. That is perhaps true, but it raises this question: In the end--after countless millions of dollars were spent on attacking the mafia, the many law enforcement officials who worked nights and weekends, missing family events, after pushing the boundaries of the Constitution on where the line to privacy stood--after all of that, what has really been accomplished? Some criminal activities, like gambling, have gone to the cloud; prostitution survives, showing up in neighborhoods where you would least expect it to; drugs are still a menace; murder in KC is very high for a city our size. The situation is actually worse today because of, not in spite of, the "success" of law enforcement. Where crime used to be centralized and marginalized to certain geographic areas, now it is everywhere, and instead of professional criminals (who were being held accountable by law enforcement as well as their associates and rivals) we now have individual "empires" run by prankster gangster thugs who can't even dress well. At least the mob gave us some order.

Buy this book. I suspect Ouseley has many more stories to tell about the mob in KC, and I look forward to reading them.

Mobsters in our Midst
By J.Blecha
One of the best books about organized crime that I have read. It provided much inside information on the Kansas City Mob during the reign of its crime boss, Nick Civella. The book provides a lot of photographs that help in seeing the players and picturing the scene in Kansas City during this time period. The author writes in a no-nonsense easy to read and understand style. He takes you inside the conflict between the crime family and the Spero brothers that ultimately lead to their death. He discusses the Mob's influence with Roy Williams of the Teamsters. He also takes you behind the scenes of the mob violence that destroyed the River Quay area of Kansas City and at the same time provides a look at the personalities of some of the mob figures. He lays out the Kansas City Mob's influence and control in several Las Vegas casinos that ultimately lead to one of the most far reaching organized crime investigations undertaken by the FBI. The author has unquestionable credentials and background to write about the topic of organized crime in Kansas City.

A Never-Ending Battle: A Soldier's Ongoing Struggle With Combat PTSD, by Howard B. Patrick

Howard Patrick, a combat veteran of the Vietnam War who suffered from acute Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for over 40 years, wrote his autobiography in the hopes it would provide his family with an understanding of how his wartime experiences and PTSD changed him, thereby affected their lives as well. Not only did his family benefit from reading it, the book had a very positive impact on others beyond his family circle, including veterans and medical professionals. The feedback he received was so overwhelmingly positive he published his book to help other combat veterans who may also be suffering from the grips of post traumatic stress, as well as provide valuable advice and support to their families. Included is information on programs available to help combat veterans having difficulty readjusting to civilian life, and how family members can get more information and assistance.

Review

"Mr. Patrick tells his story because he wants other families to understand what it took him many years to recognize and deal with. In the same selfless spirit he gave to our country, he gives again.  This time he gives a gift to all of us.  He gives us clarity.  More importantly, he gives the families and loved ones of those with PTSD something more, hope."
Michael Putzel Journalist; covered Vietnam, civil rights, White House, Moscow; and
Author, 'The Price They Paid: Enduring Wounds of War'

"This book should be required reading for war veterans wondering if their dysfunctional, erratic behaviors might be due to PTSD. What's more, every mental health professional who has ever treated (or could ever treat) a veteran as a client, also should read this book." James P. Coan - Author of Con Thien: The Hill of Angels

About the Author
Less than a year after he married, Howard Patrick was drafted into the United Sates Army and spent ten months, three weeks, and two days in Vietnam with the First Air Cavalry Division. Following a year of training, including 22 weeks at NCO School, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and left for Vietnam ten days after the birth of his daughter. Upon arriving in Vietnam he was assigned to Echo Recon, a newly-formed reconnaissance company as a squad leader, and later transferred to the Brigade Civil Affairs Unit as the NCO-In-Charge, where he also participated in air missions with the attached Psychological Operations Unit. His book describes his experiences from both an objective and emotional perspective, including such traumatic events as his first firefight, being on the receiving end of friendly fire, and getting shot down while on an air mission. He made it home with no physical injuries, but not without psychological wounds. He developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a result of his combat experience, which affected his life from his discharge right up to present day. The book details that journey. Howard lives in Philadelphia with his wife Judy of almost 50 Years. They have two children and six grandchildren.

Read this book and be changed forever
By Lawrence Souder
This book tells an extraordinary story, yet Howard Patrick writes in such an ordinary way and with great clarity. His tone is remarkably unemotional, which makes his stark statements like this one all the more gripping: “Mom, the son you knew died in Vietnam, someone else returned in his place.”

This book needs to be read, not just by veterans with PTSD and their families but also by current military personnel and anyone contemplating military service.

War and its aftermath
By Gregory H Murry
Howard Patrick has writen an excellent memoir of combat in Vietnam and the effects of PTSD years later. He takes the reader back in time and lets them see what life was like for young men going to college, planing their careers, getting married and then, getting drafted.
Patrick tells you up front that he had deeply repressed his memory and as he reconstructs his time in the army he will take the reader back to that time in a simple but real way. Starting with his trip to the induction center where he watches a group of men being told that they are going to the Marine Corps, Patrick hopes that his computer skills will give him a nice job away from combat.
The army teaches him his first lesson in military logic by assigning him to the infantry. After his MOS training, he is offered additional training in a new program designed to prepare men for leadership as infantry sergeants. Known by others as the 'Shake and Bake' sergeant's school, Patrick gives an excellent look at a forgotten piece of military leadership history. At the completion of his training, after a typical CF medical screwup regarding his injured ankle, he boards that plane that takes him to war.
After the usual paper work, Patrick is assigned to E-1-5 Cav, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), the army's answer to the battlefield mobility of the enemy. E Company is the latest organization change and is made up of mortars. Surveillance Radar and a Recon Platoon. Patrick is assigned as a recon squad leader, one of the toughest jobs in the army. He gives realistic accounts of patrolling the hills of I Corps looking for the NVA regulars. He describes in detail the ambush patrols and the aftermath of one where they lost men thanks to a eager beaver 2d Lt who ordered the enemy bodies searched before it was safe to do so.
After six months on the line, Patrick is reassigned to a psychological warfare unit after a confrontation with his company commander over what he determined to be an unreasonable order. There he took part in 'winning the hearts and minds of the people' operations and participating in leaflet drops from a helicopter while a Vietnamese spoke into the public address system encouraging the VC in the jungle below to surrender. He was shot down on one of these flights and was only saved by the skillful pilot who brought the ship back to the airstrip.
Patrick went home after this and returned to civilian life. While he was never spit on in the airport, he did notice that as soon as he told someone about being in Vietnam that person would become impersonal and withdraw from any friendship. After several of these kind of experiences, he learned to bury his military past and get on with life. He was changed but he didn't really know how or what he had become.
Ten or so years after his discharge he realized he couldn't remember anything about Vietnam. As he began to try to remember he begins to describe in great detail what is now called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). His long journey of remembering what happened to him and his buddies in Vietnam leads him into a raging case of PTSD. He looses interest in his work and goes from job to job. His marriage suffers but his wife and kids stick by him. Eventually he finds his way to the Veterans Administration and there he documents in great detail the procedures that vets must go through to get help for what I call the mind cancer that many combat soldiers contract.
Patrick's experiences with the VA are a must read for any veteran. He has been there and if you are a combat veteran you might want to read this book to see what are the symptoms of PTSD and what is available to help you and some of the pitfalls. One of the things he mentions is the fact that most treatments include anti-depressant medication. I would advise you to avoid using them because the side-effects often include suicide which is taking veterans away in record numbers. Since I was healed from my own case of PTSD and do not take medication or receive PTSD disability, I am able to say that the VA can't heal you but perhaps they can help you and at least you may be able to get them to compensate you for you nightmare.
I found Sergeant Howard Patrick's book to be an easy read. I identified with much of his army experiences and believe that his story is the real deal. It is a must read for the young veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Everyone should love their job! When they do, great things happen. Here's how to do it.
By Kevin Crenshaw
I'm a Turnaround CEO and Advisor. The principles in this book really work, turning followers into motivated, respected leaders at ALL levels of the organization. How would that feel in your company? How would that make your own job easier?

David tells a riveting story of 135 people on the worst submarine in the US Navy that become the best by changing three things: Control (giving it to the people themselves instead of barking orders); Competence (ensuring proper training and continuous development of skills); and Clarity (everyone absolutely knowing what the organization is trying to accomplish at all times). These are broken down into smaller, bite-sized principles.

I've used the same foundational principles over the years in my own assignments, and it works brilliantly. Unleash the people, help them get what they need, help them all row in the same (correct) direction, and amazing things happen, quickly.

Must read. Then get the workbook, Turn Your Ship Around.

David Marquet's experience on the Santa Fe a lot like some of my experiences as well
By Amazon Customer
Being a retired Navy Master Chief I found Capt. David Marquet's experience on the Santa Fe a lot like some of my experiences as well. I had an opportunity to do something different in regard to leadership styles at one of my at-sea commands onboard the USS Elmer Montgomery. I have read and re-read Turn Your Ship Around 3 or 4 times and each time I've uncovered another thought or idea that I can use going forward.

Roger Sherman and the Creation of the American Republic, by Mark David Hall

One of leading figures of his day, Roger Sherman was a member of the five-man committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence and an influential delegate at the Constitutional Convention. As a Representative and Senator in the new republic, he had a hand in determining the proper scope of the national government's power as well as drafting the Bill of Rights. In Roger Sherman and the Creation of the American Republic, Mark David Hall explores Sherman's political theory and shows how it informed his many contributions to America's founding.

A close examination of Sherman's religious beliefs provides insight into how those beliefs informed his political actions. Hall shows that Sherman, like many founders, was influenced by Calvinist political thought, a tradition that played a role in the founding generation's opposition to Great Britain, and led them to develop political institutions designed to prevent corruption, promote virtue, and protect rights. Contrary to oft-repeated assertions that the founders advocated a strictly secular policy, Hall argues persuasively that most founders believed Christianity should play an important role in the new American republic.

Review

"It is one of the many virtues of Mark David Hall s succinct, lucid monograph that he makes a convincing case for Sherman s significance without falling prey to the whining tone of special pleading that so often taints books examining neglected Founding Fathers...Hall has written
an admirable introduction to Roger Sherman's life, political career, and role as a thinking politician...[An] excellent book."--Church History and Religious Culture

"Dr. Mark Hall offers a compelling Calvinist narrative to the formation of the American order in his recent political biography, Roger Sherman and the Creation of the American Republic... Hall's political biography of Roger Sherman is an excellent and heartily welcomed addition to this woefully neglected field of research." --Alan R. Crippen II, John Jay Institute

"As is, we have a book on Roger Sherman that religious and revolutionary historians should find useful." --Journal of Church and State

"A great book about a great but little known American. Professor Hall gracefully explains how one of the Founding Era's best politicians fully integrated his religious faith into a life of pragmatic and effective public service. Why can't more histories be this enjoyable to read?"--William R. Casto, Paul Whitfield Horn University Professor of Law, Texas Tech University

"Hardly the 'simple cobbler from Connecticut' portrayed on Broadway in 1776, Roger Sherman emerges from Professor Hall's excellent volume as deeply immersed in both Reformed theology and the practical politics of nation-building. Sherman's contributions to the American founding have been overlooked for too long, and Professor Hall has done a great service to remind us not only of the importance of Sherman himself but also of the Protestant Reformed tradition that he represented."--Donald L. Drakeman, author of Church, State, and Original Intent

"While most debates about the constitutional intent of our Founding Fathers focus on Madison, Franklin, Washington, and Jefferson, Mark David Hall expands our intellectual horizons with this detailed examination of the life and thought of Roger Sherman, the most important of the 'forgotten founders.' But Hall's research is more than just a biography of one man; he uses the person of Roger Sherman to reveal the deep-seated culture of Calvinism that influenced the original structure of our nation's government. This book is a must-read for anyone engaged in legal debates about the nature of the U.S. Constitution."--Anthony Gill, author of The Political Origins of Religious Liberty

"The best life of Connecticut's foremost Founding Father ever written." --The American Conservative

"In this thoughtful, compelling book, Mark David Hall not only demonstrates that Roger Sherman was one of the most influential Founding Fathers, but he also convincingly locates Sherman's politics in the Reformed Christian tradition. Sherman deserves recognition as an indispensable leader of the new American nation, and every student and scholar of the Revolutionary period would profit greatly from reading Hall's treatment of this distinguished Connecticut Patriot."--Thomas S. Kidd, author of Patrick Henry: First Among Patriots

"Elegantly written, carefully researched, and downright persuasive...Hall so brilliantly and strenuously challenges the consensus view that we should look forward to this book being banned from public schools across the country...it is a book worth reading."--Library of Law and Liberty

"This slim volume should find its way onto many syllabi. Clearly and engagingly written, itis perfect for undergraduates, who also respond enthusastically to the 'forgotten founder' trope. This fine study is recommended not only for students but also for scholars who believe they can understand the founding as a purely secular event." --The Journal of American History

Inconclusive Evidence
By VA Duck
Professor Mark David Hall offers a look at one of the most important of the least known Founders and Framers of the Constitution. The author's approach is NOT biographic (by his own assertion, loc. 230) but rather a careful examination of the influence of Sherman's religion (New Light Congregational) on his political acts. Roger Sherman's resumé is one of the most impressive of the founders. He was the ONLY Founder to sign all four of the Great State Papers of the United States (Continental Association, 1774; Declaration of Independence, 1776; Articles of Confederation, 1777; & U.S. Constitution, 1787). He addressed the Constitutional Convention more times (138) than any but three of the other Delegates (Gouverneur Morris & James Wilson of PA and James Madison of VA) and served on five of its committees, an honor equalled only by Hugh Williamson of NC and exceeded only by Rufus King (6) of MA.

Professor Hall's work impressively examines Sherman's religion and its influence on him. The book also explores Sherman's political contributions. Where the book falls short (for this reader at least) is the promised connection, i.e. a clear illustration of HOW (and where) Mr. Sherman's particular brand of religious belief made its way into the Founding Documents. For the purpose of the author's thesis, one could (carefully) stipulate that religion influenced the Founders, or even influenced the drafting of the Great Papers. Notably, Professor Hall's book promised much more: "In this book I contend that the political ideas of many leaders in the founding era are best understood in light of a long tradition of CALVINIST reflection on politics" - but in the end, concludes without living up to the contention. Professor Hall may have set the bar higher than the particulars of Calvinism could support. Separating Calvinist tenants from Diest, or Episcopal, or even Catholic (heaven help us) as they relate to Mr. Sherman's contribution to the Founding Documents proves to be a muddled and unsatisfying distillation, e.g., "Sherman like many of his New England colleagues, was simultaneously an advocate of democracy, state's rights and a stronger national government." (loc. 1435). Or, "Sherman and his Reformed colleagues were part of a tradition that had long held that individuals possess natural rights, that governments should be based on the consent of the people, that civil authority should be limited, and that people have a right to overthrow tyrannical regimes." (loc.1249). But so too did Madison, Jefferson, Pinckney, Carroll, Mason, etc. and no Calvinists, they!

The book is worth the read, but recommended to those who's interest in Sherman may be from the religious perspective rather than traditionally biographic. The book can also be appreciated as a rare and welcome offering outside the historical "litany" of: Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison and Franklin, and THAT is worth congratulations to the author. Professor Hall takes the time to frequently inform the reader of his intention for the book, or chapter, or section, so there is little reason to miss the objectives intended. Frequently, however, the conclusions come off as incomplete, forced, or obscure. In the end you will be better off for the read having learned more of a very important founder, but you may need a more generous perception of accountability, than this reader, to be convinced of Professor Hall's contention. While that assessment is arguable, Professor Hall does convince his readership of Mr. Sherman's deserved importance and undeserved neglect as a one of the Great Founders.

-----kindle edition-----

A well done e-book containing the proper links to chapters and citations. There is a well populated notes section, an appendix and an index. The index contains page numbers (from its paper book siblings) but is unlinked; easily overcome by the kindle's "highlight-search book" function, which replicates index functionality. There is one illustration - a stilted painting of Sherman by the ungifted portraitist Ralph Earl. The text-to-speech is enabled, but there are no page numbers, the electronic functional equivalent only... the lame "location". No text errors, but William Pierce is confused as "Franklin" Pierce at location 120. e-book publication quality for Publisher Oxford University Press ★★★★☆, good job.

And while it is easy to cherry pick which Founder to quote on issues ...
By brenden.b
This is a well written book about one of the most influential forgotten figures of the founding period of our nation. While Jefferson, Madison, and Franklin grabbed more headlines, it was the quiet work of Roger Sherman that helped shape the nation. Sherman was not flashy in his ideas, but rather soundly based in the Reformed Christian tradition, which is sadly forgotten in today's history classes. During the founding era, about half of the population of the colonies considered themselves to be Reformed Christians, yet today we never hear about how their beliefs helped shape the nation. Hall provides a comprehensive list of the Founding Fathers that would have identified themselves as Reformed, and would closely identify with Sherman. And while Hall believes that their Christian beliefs informed their political philosophy, he doesn't over sell the point.

Contrary to popular belief, America has Christian roots. All because a few of the Founding Fathers considered themselves deists does not account for the whole. And while it is easy to cherry pick which Founder to quote on issues such as religious liberty, it is important to take a wider survey to more fully understand the great debates during the founding of our Republic.

Hall does a fantastic job with this book. I only wish it could have been longer.

This book was not quite what I was looking for ...
By Dean A. Schrader
This book was not quite what I was looking for as to a history/biography of a founding father. This was more of a dissertation on Calvinist influence in the creation of early American thought with a little bit of Roger Sherman and the influences of religion in his life.

Mello Yello: The Incredible Life Story of Jack the Rapper, by Walker Smith

In the 1920s a little boy named Jack Gibson shook hands with the great Marcus Garvey. Over the course of his amazing life, Gibson continued to cross paths with the most famous personalities of the 20th century. He would become a giant of the music industry, known to all as "Jack the Rapper."

In the '40s, he and J.B. Blayton established the first black-owned radio station in the United States--WERD. As a disc jockey and emcee, he built enduring friendships with the royalty of black entertainment: Sammy Davis Jr., Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole, Pearl Bailey, Nancy Wilson, and Ray Charles. In the '60s and '70s, he worked at Motown, Revelot, and Stax promoting a new generation of stars: Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Isaac Hayes, and The Staple Singers.

During the Civil Rights Movement, he reported history as he lived it. He interviewed both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, and reported from Detroit as it burned following Dr. King's assassination.

As publisher of an influential Black trade magazine called the Mello Yello, Gibson contributed to sweeping changes for African Americans in radio and the recording industry. But The Rapper's most long-reaching achievement was his glittering "Family Affair"--an annual black music convention and springboard for new talent. The heavy hitters of the music industry always cleared their schedules to lend their talents to The Rapper's big night: Prince, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, James Brown, Whitney Houston, Eddie Murphy, Hammer, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Sinbad, L.L. Cool J, Babyface, Heavy D, Tupac, Queen Latifah, Snoop Dogg, Suge Knight, Bobby Brown... And the list goes on like a "Who's Who" of entertainment superstars.

Review
Walker Smith's unique expertise as a historical novelist serves Mello Yello quite well. Jack speaks to us through Walker Smith his voice, his personality, his rap is as unadulterated as if he were sitting beside us; and the stories all flow together to create a lasting written tribute to a remarkable man. --Joe Donn Martin

From the Author
Over the course of my two-year collaboration with Jack the Rapper Gibson, I listened to hundreds of stories--some personal, some historical.  He always called me "Father Walker" because he said that talking to me was like going to confession.

I listened to Jack laugh and talk trash as only he could. I was his sounding board for ranting and raving about life's injustice.  I heard the pain of too many goodbyes and felt the indomitable spirit of a man who fought that "final curtain" right up to the end.  Jack the Rapper. Jockey Jack. Ol' Nosey. He was part "Green Onions" and a little Shostakovich. A zoot-suit wearin' bebop man and the voice of The Symphony Hour. From the Rum Boogie to the Lord Calvert and Club Wallahajee to Hitsville, U.S.A. and the White House. From "assuming the position" as a policy man in 1940s Chicago to his place in the spotlight, center-stage at all those glittering Family Affairs that we all miss so much. He crisscrossed the country riding on airwaves, and probably shook more hands than any president or his old buddy Thurgood Marshall. He was a man who lived history and then reported it. He played too hard and loved too many women. And he raised hell when hell needed raising.

Only two things sobered him.  Impassioned him.  Gave him pause.

Music and angels.

His rap went completely rhapsodic when it came to music--from Arthur Prysock's "This Is My Beloved" to "Purple Rain" by Prince. Jack the Rapper showed us the colors of music and made us feel its magic with every spin. And he did have his angels. First there was Sadye, who blessed him with two angels of their own, Little Jack and Jamilla, Lady of the Moonlight. And one last angel named Elsie came along "Just In Time" for one last lovely romance.

Music and angels.

The volume of Jack's voice has faded over the years, but it's still alive in my memory. Now I guess it's my turn to put in my two-cents' worth...

Jack, this was so much more than a book project. There was so much wisdom between the lines of your stories; so much truth in your tall tales. Even when your wicked side was wrong, you always walked on the side of right when it counted. For over two years you were my clown prince, a grouchy pain in the ass, a "Talking Book" of history, and a streetwise philosopher. You were one of my most revered teachers, and you will always be my cherished friend. Writing your life was a blast. Thanks for the ride in your time machine.

                                                            With love,
                                                            --Father Walker

A lasting written tribute to a remarkable man.
By Joe Donn Martin
There is a soundtrack to your best memories. The morning radio in your mother’s kitchen; music blasting from a car’s speakers while cruising for trouble with your friends; and, all importantly, that one song which will forever make you think of her….

A significant number of people can credit their personal life soundtrack to one Mr. Jack Gibson, aka Jockey Jack, aka Jack the Rapper - a renowned disk jockey and pioneer of Black Radio with a career spanning over half a century.

In Mello Yello, Jack the Rapper shares his own incredible reminiscences, and it is much more than just a soundtrack; it is a first-hand insight into the lives of the legends who created - and distributed - the music responsible for so many important memories in so many people, it has certainly forged the soul of this country.

The radio in mother’s kitchen? Jack was there. Stories of his family, his childhood, his wife and children are touching and, as too often happens, heartbreaking. Ballads inseparable from tender moments shared by lovers? Jack was there. Not that Mello Yello is a kiss ‘n tell expose, but Mr. Gibson was no stranger to the romantic rendezvous. Finally, those dangerous songs that drive you and your crew right over the edge of trouble? Oh yeah. Jack was definitely there. Some of his wild stories are jaw-droppingly reckless, others are infuriating, and many are simply laugh-out-loud hilarious.

The best memories are set to music. Why trust them to anything less than a professional?

Speaking of professionals; Walker Smith, the author, is a skilled and confident historian. Her novels of historical fiction are meticulously written and are thematically significant and important. Which has many of you now thinking they must be boring as hell - but nothing could be further from the truth. Her prose is lively, she never loses pace, and her characters are full of passion - all while working in the unforgiving confines of history. In fact, to the list of paradoxes associated with time travel, I would add: Time travel must be impossible, because if it weren’t every image ever rendered of humanity - from cave drawing to holographic projections - would include the figure of Walker Smith standing there taking notes.

And this unique expertise serves Mello Yello quite well. Jack speaks to us through Walker Smith - his voice, his personality, his rap is as unadulterated as if he were sitting beside us; and the stories all flow together to create a lasting written tribute to a remarkable man.

Rio The Story of the Marvelous City, by Orde Morton

Rio de Janeiro's is a lush, complex history that spans five centuries, and Marvelous City is the first full length retelling of that history written in English. From the beach life of the Ipanema and Copacabana to the struggles of the Rio's infamous favelas, this is a story of contrast and contradiction. We are offered a glimpse into Rio's high society and rich culture and are shown the endemic violence, corruption, and social disparity with which it struggles to this day. With its populist politics and its unique blend of European, African and Amerindian influences, Rio de Janeiro has grown, over the centuries, into a place all its own, one that is greater than the sum of its parts, distinctively Brazilian, and whose symbol is the Rio Carnaval, the greatest show on earth. The beating cultural heart of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is poised to host the 2016 Olympic Games. Author Orde Morton invites you to look beyond the postcard perfection of its natural beauty and discover this one of a kind city in all its many-sided wonder.

One of the best qualities a historian can display is empathy
By Ricardo Sternberg
REVIEW TRANSLATION
From the original Portuguese to English
Orde Morton's book, "Rio: The Story of the Marvelous City", is not just the first and the most complete and inclusive history of Rio de Janeiro in English. It is also destined to become an obligatory reference in any other language, including Portuguese. Through 16 chapters, arranged in four parts and three "interludes", the author interweaves the history of the city with that of Brazil itself. He is aware of the settlement's importance from the arrival of the Portuguese colonizers at the beginning of the XVIth century up to the present day.
One of the best qualities a historian can display is empathy. Those who have this attribute are able to view the history of a society that is not their own with the minimum possible interference of the inherent biases and outlook of their own country. This is not easy. It requires a long and difficult apprenticeship, involving a thorough mastery of the language and the idiom of the reality they are seeking to understand. It requires a long and ongoing familiarity with the bibliography and the primary and secondary sources bearing on their field of research. Orde Morton — a Canadian by origin — meets all these conditions in his book. He appears well-protected against possible criticisms from the Brazilian historians who always deplore the self-centredness of foreign analysts. It really is far from unusual for the latter to try to understand other realities on the basis of their own, a limitation which many times proves insuperable. This is not true of Orde Morton.
"Rio: The Story of the Marvelous City" is a book written by a historian who was trained in one of the world's best universities, Oxford, but who is also an excellent writer. He never descends to academic jargon. His style is acerbic, engaging, rich in nuances of the English language, and never dull. He knows well that his target is an educated public in search of better information on Rio de Janeiro, which beyond any doubt is one of the most famous cities in the world.
Orde Morton's work is based on an extensive and well-chosen bibliography, available on his website (www.ordemorton.com). It is also the product of long residence in Rio de Janeiro in several periods of his life. He does not hide his strong feeling for the city, though this does not affect the objectivity of his narrative, nor clouds the lucidity of his criticisms. You could even say that he has a passion for the city. If this is true, he has ended by bequeathing us a tale told with ardour, one essential for English-speaking readers.

A Must Read Before You Head to Rio
By Brian Smith
I have never visited Rio -- but now, having read Orde Morton's entertaining history of "The Marvelous City," I feel I have to go. The picture he paints of this city is captivating. For anyone planning a visit to Rio -- as many will in 2016 -- here is an opportunity to learn about the city and what makes it tick. Dr Morton's history is reported to be the only English-language history of Rio in print; that alone makes it special. What makes it really special is how Dr Morton weaves anecdote and well researched history into an enjoyable journey from Rio's earliest days right up to the present. An historian by training, Dr Morton carefully assesses how the personalities and events of Rio's past shaped the city's geography, politics and economy. He tells us the story of "the slow creation, from sharply differing materials, of a sense of identity and a unique way of life." It is evident that Dr Morton has a great fondness for Rio de Janeiro, and he captures the spirit of the people well -- including their wry sense of humour. His fondness for the city does not, however, stop him from telling us about the city's warts and blemishes, too. He explains, for example, how Rio's world-famous (infamous?) favelas took root as Rio's less fortunate built their homes, with little or no regard for their legal right to do so. He also deals frankly with the political and economic turmoil that Brazil and Cariocas have faced over the years. He concludes, however, that, though they may have been dealt a mixed hand, "they have played that hand to its fullest and built a city like no other." It is a city I now want to see -- and for others who are planning to do likewise, this is the book you should read before going.
