About the Author

Peter Cole was a Senior Analyst on Libya with the International Crisis Group (ICG) during the revolution and the ensuing transitional government, providing policy advice and background briefings to the UN, EU, governments, companies, NGOs and most major media outlets. Prior to his work with ICG, Peter completed an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford.

Brian McQuinn is currently completing a PhD in anthropology on the 2011 uprising in Libya, as a Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellow at the University of Oxford. He was previously the assistant director of the Carter Center Conflict Resolution Program and a conflict prevention advisor for the United Nations Development Programme.

The Libyan revolution and its aftermath describe the beginning of the revolution and reason why it happened and a brief history of Libya is given. All key players are covered and the recent split in the government is also covered. Book gives the reader good insight into why thing happened and the current stalemate in the government. Book also shows which country is support the two governments now in power. Interesting portion is also the political process and why the government lost control of the movement. Good read and enjoyable

Hardcore Shaktic and Tantric Kundalini Yoga (Chakras)

The only reason why I have this book, which is mostly hardcore Hinduism, is because of reading - The Tibetan Book of the Dead by W.Y.Evans-Wentz which is essentially Buddhism. In that book, and especially his follow-up books (Tibetan Yoga and Secret Doctrines), Evans-Wentz makes reference to The Serpent Power in many of his footnotes. There are also introductions by Sir John Woodroffe (Arthur Avalon) in the books of Evans-Wentz. There are aspects of Buddhism and Hinduism that are intertwined. Hinduism is more like Christianity, in that it uses deities and faith to help one understand much of that which it espouses on. Buddhism is more psychological and metaphysical. That is why Evans-Wentz books have all introductions by Jung.
One of the main points of interest that has been adopted by Buddhism are the chakra, which are better known as - The Psychic Centers. There are seven of these centers in the human body. They are connected and are mostly psychological. Evans-Wentz does a good job of explaining these Psychic Centers in his own books but if you really want to see where Buddhist chakra developed from then no look further than the master book on the topic - The Serpent Power.
Now a word of warning. Hinduism is nothing like Buddhism or Christianity and this book is a world away from most Buddhist literature. It is heavy on Sanskrit and is certainly tough reading. However this whole book is a secret doctrine about the chakra, the psychic centers and Kundalini yoga. That doctrine is also called - The Description of the Six Chakras and the Five-fold footstool. There is 300 pages of an introduction and then the entire translation of that doctrine.
Those who wish to find out more about Kundalini Yoga or the Chakra may be advised to check out the works of W.Y.Evans-Wentz first before moving on to this more complex topic. It is presented in the manner of Hinduism and is certainly tough going - however the goal is attainable right here within these pages.

This work will bring the reader into the power of Devatma Shakti Kundalini just by reading and pondering the text. Old feelings will find a home in the transformation from experience to understanding as the book flows forward. Gentle delight is the mark of a true Tantric text and this book, although strange and difficult at times, is pure de-light. If you want to know about Chakras and such, this is a classic text by one who really knows. Old and grand, this is a favorite treasure of mine and one I give away regularly to friends who must have more. Lam-to-Aum... Riley Jackson

This amazing translation of two Sanskrit texts, Sat-chakra-nirupana ("Description of the Six Chakras") and Paduka-pancaka ("Fivefold footstool") was published around the end of WWI and is a prime example of the quality of European scholarship of the day. We don't learn much about Sir Woodroffe's personal practice however his textual understanding is nuanced and encyclopedic and is clearly based on extensive Western and Hindu sources.

Both texts are detailed instructions on how to wake and guide the "serpent" from its sleep in the muladhara chakra. A lay reader will probably not get all they could, as the translated texts require a familiarity with terms such as mandala, bindu, vrrti, tattva etc. What is clearly conveyed however is that properly guided work leads to concrete results which are manifested by unambigous signs and evaluated through rigorous tests by credentialed teachers of Hindu Tantra. I would note that most Westerners may be more familiar with the Sikh version of Kundalini yoga which has its own (different but no less effective) textual infrastructure and practices (gongs!). Hindu Kundalini tantrikas were/are less secretive than the Sikhs so that, at least from the textual standpoint, we know more about the formal practice design. The foundation of these practices is often poetic and still resonates across the thousand(s) of years. Here are the words of Siva:

"Welcome, o Beauty of the three worlds, welcome is Thy question. This knowledge (which I am about to disclose) is the secret of secrets, and I have not imparted it to anyone till now. Listen, then, with attention: " (p. 145).

This, in a nutshell, is a classical work. It's worth reading for the text itself as for the commentary. For a more modern view, one might check the new translations of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra. If one is interested in energy, and energy flow, this is a good book to have.

About the Author
Dmitriy Kushnir is a philosopher and a writer. He was born in Ukraine, and has moved to the United States in 1995. Currently he lives in Sarasota, FL. In his mid twenties, he started research about Slavic culture and his heritage. Now he is writing books about Slavic heritage, in order to bring information to English speaking people of Slavic descent, for much of the information is only available in Slavic languages and not in English.

I would highly recommend his books to anyone interested in Slavic Paganism

I have been looking for any books in english about the Rodnovary faith for a long time with no luck, that is until now. Even tho I have no Slavic Ancestry that I know of, I still feel drawn to the Gods and Goddesses of This Faith. I was very excited when I discoved Dmitriy Kushnir's Slavic Way series and have purchased every book he has released in this phenomenal series. I would highly recommend his books to anyone interested in Slavic Paganism.

Besides the obvious wealth, this group of women is also relatively young, with an average age of 58 which is about 10 years younger than their male counterparts. To top it all, over 95% of them are married and over 90% have children, with average number of children 2.7. About one third of them (12 out of 36) are either (1) high school dropouts (2) high school graduate or (3) college dropouts. More than 90% of them have great success in both business and family. A few of them are household names, such as Oprah Winfrey and JK Rowling, most are little known even in their own countries.
This is the first of a series of book on self-made billionaires. We build museums to house famous artists. We adore great athletes in Olympics and Word Cup. We adore super-entertainers, and we create Nobel Prize for super-scientists and super-politicians. So, why not celebrate self-made billionaires too? Why not build a pantheon for self-made women billionaires?

There are two reasons why I chose woman group to start. The first reason is start-small, a valuable lesson I learned in the many start-up failures I have had. The woman group with only 36 members, allows me to start-small. I have a database of more than 1,000 self-made billionaires. If I include a few hundreds, I think I will bore most readers. The second reason is my Christian values, which lead me to begin my study with one of the most disadvantaged group.

This is definitely one of the best of its kind, if not the best; the amount of research done for it was amazing.
The author seems to understand each of these characters so well that, if I were one of them I would be touched.
This book reminded me to have dreams, big dreams and to have faith, and with a bit of help and well wishes from people around you (help and well wishes come for good reasons too) then even big dreams can come true.
Thanks for reminding me the impossibles could become possible!!

Inspiring life of Louise Vuitton

when I ordered this book I was expecting the usual biography. Instead it is an interesting short book. In fact I read it in one day. It follows the amazing life of Louise Vuitton and his son starting with Louise's humbly beginning. If you enjoy rags to riches stories the likes of Rockefeller or Carnegie this short book is a must read.

Former slaves, with no prior experience in electoral politics and with few economic resources or little significant social standing, created a sweeping political movement that transformed the South after the Civil War. Within a few short years after emancipation, not only were black men voting but they had elected thousands of ex-slaves to political offices. Historians have long noted the role of African American slaves in the fight for their emancipation and their many efforts to secure their freedom and citizenship, yet they have given surprisingly little attention to the system of governance that freedpeople helped to fashion. Justin Behrend argues that freedpeople created a new democracy in the Reconstruction era, replacing the oligarchic rule of slaveholders and Confederates with a grassroots democracy.

Reconstructing Democracy tells this story through the experiences of ordinary people who lived in the Natchez District, a region of the Deep South where black political mobilization was very successful. Behrend shows how freedpeople set up a political system rooted in egalitarian values wherein local communities rather than powerful individuals held power and ordinary people exercised unprecedented influence in governance. In so doing, he invites us to reconsider not only our understanding of Reconstruction but also the nature and origins of democracy more broadly.

A concise study of the meaning and mechanisms of Reconstruction democracy in Natchez

Justin Behrend has produced a compelling and detailed synthesis of the rise and fall of black democracy in the Natchez District. By pursuing a grassroots analysis and thus accounting for the stories of postal workers, delegates to nominating conventions, party organizers, and familial voices, Behrend has expanded the meaning of democratic political participations in the Reconstruction South. As such, his Black Politicians Database, accounting for more than four hundred officeholders, party members, and political appointees, is a significant contribution. So is his insistence that the emerging partisan politics were not necessarily racial politics; in other words, that freedmen were not destined to become Republicans. In the Natchez District (Adams County in particular), democracy was both "bipartisan and biracial" for many years after the Civil War (121). Lastly, Behrend's treatment of the violent Democratic redemption after 1876--an exogenous force in his view--is enlightening. He writes: "Where once an outside military force had tipped the scales of justice toward emancipation, now another military force from beyond the district tipped the scales back toward repression" (234).

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in furthering their understanding of the United States' uncertain (and ultimately unsustainable) decade of bipartisan and biracial grassroots democracy during Reconstruction.

Doug is a Washington insider and a brilliant man who knows what he is talking about. Although a Liberal Democrat, he doesn't hesitate to blame the President for his part in the mess we are in.
