A touching story of a mother's strength

I cannot comprehend the pain this MOTHER went through while fighting for the custody of a child that she carried for nine months!!! A vivid narration of a mother’s struggle dealing with a vindictive ex-husband, a corrupt and biased court system and dysfunctional in-laws. It is heart-wrenching to go through the journey with her as you read the memoir. Ostracized by the ex’s family she still rises above and continues to fight and live for her son. The injustices she endured in the corrupt court system are appalling!!! She persevered through it all!!! The story is touching, funny at times, sad and thought provoking. Kudos to her showing that a MOTHER NEVER GIVES UP!!! An amazing portrayal of a woman’s strength even when the world is crushing down. I highly recommend it. This is a great book for men and women in and out of relationships. Lesson: do not ignore little ‘red flags’!!! Where there is smoke…

Inspiring and beautifully written! This book is an easy read, brings laughter and tears, reminds us of the strength of women and mothers, the importance of family tradition, and living with integrity, respect, and love for one another. Loved it, could not put it down!

This is a great book for everyone who is married and looking to get married. It is also for parents, in-laws, siblings and people in the legal system representing Family Law. It covers a story of a mentally stable woman who crossed boarders to settle with her new husband in a foreign country. She takes us through the divorce struggles she endured alone (away from her family) and in the process lost her child in a corrupt legal system.

I stopped everything for the day to finish this book. I could not put it down! It is sad, yet funny and informative. I connected with author’s pain, cry, and anger for justice. Wow, what a way to release all that emotion in a form of a book!

Her story makes me beg the question whether there should be a screenings process to qualify the type of lawyers required to represent Family Law. It is the most emotional time for the parties involved. It is unfortunate that a few lawyers use this opportunity to enrich themselves instead of providing guidance and best care to their client and all those that are involved during this process.

My advice and the key things I take from reading this book is that, the background of people matter more than anything else when selecting our partner. It has to be the number one thing to consider, because we can never change their past experiences that make them who they are today. If you do not share similar values, or upbringing, conflicts are prone to arise. What is normal for you, is not necessarily Ok for your partner and vice versa. You can lose your identity trying to blow out fire left, right and center. Tell tell signs are always there…..God whispers he never fails to…the Universe will knock at our door, sometimes loud and sometimes it will feel like a cold breeze or chills. Let’s tune in to our inner self and listen to the guidance that exists within us. Trust, believe and honor the feelings and doubts that you have. This is how we can align ourselves to our soul’s purpose.

I hope the author finds the armor of God, the Universe and all that there is, to guide her, protect her, comfort her and find genuine love again. Eventually all things work together for the good. I send her Blessings!

Unbiased Language Is Not Possible

Unspinning the Spin is a worthwhile effort to counter what I, the authors, and many other others (but not everyone) consider harmful, counterproductive, biases in the English language.

However, assertions in the introductory “Writing Guidelines” concerning the possibility of “unbiased language” are incorrect. Unbiased language is not possible. That’s because bias is natural to the human condition; in the words of a fastcompany post, “If you have a brain, you’re automatically biased”. Moreover, many biases are (as pointed out by Tom De Michele in a factmyth blog post, People Can Be Truly Unbiased MYTH) beneficial as well as natural: “we are hardwired with bias and [use] bias constantly as part of the natural neurological process of learning”. Rather than trying for the impossible-unbiased, we should acknowledge our biases and deal with them by reducing or countering detrimental biases and optimizing salutary partialities and inclinations.

This is a terribly short book but I very much enjoyed the content

This is a terribly short book but I very much enjoyed the content. It has a view I have not entirely considered. It gave me a good perspective and plenty of material to check into as I never just blindly take anyone's opinions but feel as though the author meticulously put this together. This is great for a quick profound read however, if you are caught up in your own perspective and get upset with folks who challenge your beliefs then this may not be for you!

In the Middle of China’s Future - Tom Plate “does it again.” Plate once again validates his highly respected reputation of his commitment to deeply and carefully understand Asia, and to eloquently and clearly communicate such in his writings.
I loved the format, the honesty, the humor, and his passionate desire to give his readers objective perspectives, something it seems many journalists often times lack. Although Plate would have been a marginal CIA agent, he is an extraordinary journalist, author, and professor. He exemplifies his desire to advance understanding, and with mutual understanding comes more viable and constructive relationships. In regard to his Crusade to help himself and his readers understand China, Tom Plate asks “Do I succeed or fail.” Tom, you overwhelming succeed. May all who is interested in the present and future of the world read your work, and always pursue mutual understanding. Looking forward to the movie….

An intriguing look at modern young adulthood and more.

Who hasn't dreamt of traveling the world, to explore the unknown, seek opportunity or escape the familiar? Few of us do more than dream, and this is a story of 26 very different young people who left their home lives in eight countries to teach English in South Korea. What drove them to make such a leap? What surprises did they find? Why is it so hard for them to return home? These and many other questions are answered in this captivating exploration by a curious mind who happens to be a Professor of English herself. This book is a savory stew of many ingredients: the psycho-social-economic aspects of why this seemed like a good idea at first, and why so many had a hard time leaving; the window into the culture of South Korea that these young people experienced; the unusual aspects of the work itself; and Professor Bizzell's analysis of an emerging type of young adulthood, more open to the world, to a more nomadic lifestyle, less constrained to the "ideal" of earlier generations (job, house in the suburbs, spouse, 2-and-a-half children); and seasoned liberally with spicy anecdotes.

At first, "Brain in a Jar" seems like an easy read. It's short for a memoir, coming in at just under 200 pages. Nancy Stearns Bercaw's writing is clear, direct and honest; the story is instantly interesting and engaging. You dive in, and move quickly through the chapters. The book's accessibility is deceiving, however; its emotional impact is as complicated and complex as Bercaw's relationship with her father.

Bercaw illustrates that relationship in vignettes: snapshots of her life, growing up with a brilliant, intense, emotionally clumsy man whom she both idolized and feared. She eloquently describes the powerful, conflicting feelings she has for her dad: desperately wanting to please him and draw him closer, while often - and sometimes at the same time - being infuriated and completely put off by his distance and incomprehensibility. She is also acutely aware of how like her father she is, a fact which can be a badge of honor or an albatross, depending on her feelings about her dad at any given moment. And, throughout her life, as she tries to navigate and understand this relationship, the specter of Alzheimer's looms over both of them.

I raced through the book in two sittings, riding along with Bercaw's emotional roller coaster, often being moved to tears. After several days of processing, chewing on particular scenes I couldn't get out of my head, I went back and read the book again. I finished the book with the same feeling I'd had the first time: I wanted there to be more. The vignettes are emotionally rich, and each paints a detailed picture of that moment in Bercaw's life. But while the stories as they are make a complete narrative, I was also very aware of the spaces in between the moments we get to see. Some memoirs feel too long, with anecdotes that seem insignificant and pointless, which are only there to stretch out the book. This one is the opposite: it leaves you wishing you could go back and experience more of this beautiful, heartbreaking story. Which, I realize, is probably exactly what Bercaw feels about her father.

A Difficult Story to Tell

I found this book to be a beautifully written account of a child's life with (and for) her father. Sometimes humorous, sometimes painful, but consistently honest and forthcoming, Ms Bercaw tells of her father's life as a dedicated neurologist, facing the inevitable and unfair onset of the disease that took his own father. She relates the toll it took on her family and how they all dealt with this sad scenario. This had to be a difficult story to tell as the author never holds back her opinions or her emotions.
Very brave, very bold. Bravo!

I would recommend this book to anyone

THIS is an amazingly personal book about a complex and quirky family. The author does not hold back on the bare facts or the emotional drama which accompanies her tale. I would recommend this book to anyone. Ms. Bercaw is an excellent writer and has a gift of evoking visual images of what she portrays.

Simply the BEST!

For people who love history (me), or true crime. This author is the best. He has the knack for transporting you back in time to days that were, maybe, not the good old days. Other authors focus on well known or famous crimes. This author delves into the little known ones. What's fascinating is that are are obscure, as some of them are more horrendous than the ones you know. This author has the website 'Historical Crime Detective'. I highly reccommend this book and the web page. Hundreds of people are discovering how wonderful his stories are. The best of the 'up and coming'. 5 STARS!

Engaging coverage of forgotten crimes in the US.

I ordered this book as a Prime freebie; my first time doing this. Honestly, I thought that if they were letting me read it for free, it may not be very good. I was wrong. First, I read in another review that someone did not get pictures on their Kindle. This e-book does have pictures, and I got them just fine on my fire phone. Now, the book...

This is a collection of true crime stories spanning from 1900 to the 1960's. I had never heard of any of the atrocities that the author covered. Jason Morrow has a clear voice and well written prose. I do not know how he researched his work, but for most of the book, I felt like he must have actually went to these places to see the courthouses, towns, etc. because he does a great job of giving details. Then he made a comment about being able to find particular pictures on line, and I was not sure if he had done all of his work on line and was just very creative or if he had actually visited the places that he wrote about. It broke the mood a little, and I would have preferred that information in a foot note. That aside, I really enjoyed his writing. He added in just the right amount of sarcasm and wit to make you smile and nod your head. He was clear about the facts that could be verified and when the facts were sketchy, such as name spellings. I like it when an author keeps that kind of integrity in his writing.

Also, I noticed that one review had said they found the work dry in places. I did not, but I am interested in the topic so I found the facts about the crimes and how they were investigated interesting. I felt that the author did a good job of covering the pertinent information, mixing in interesting tidbits to engage the reader, and giving flavor to the stories. I saw that Jason Morrow has some other work out there, and now that I have read this, I will gladly pay to read the rest.

Any True Crime Fan Needs This!

This is a very good look at some notorious crimes which are no less disturbing than many of the most famous crimes in American history even if they are not as well remembered. Mr. Morrow insures that these haunting tales will no be forgotten.

He begins with the tale of the "Capitol Hill Thug" which closely resembles the Jack the Ripper case, but it is just as interesting and possibly more so disturbing. We then go to a trunk with something interesting waiting inside of it. Then he tells us about the very strange case of the Carver family that really had me guessing from beginning to end.

Then we learn of a very strange case of espionage(or is it?) before recalling a deranged spree killer in Chester Comer. After those dark turns, Mr. Morrow teaches us about a college case where a China man is shot by a young woman in hot pursuit of him in broad daylight. Next thing you know, a woman loses her head after a little promiscuity and than a bad deal goes really bad before a poor blind man tries a scheme that may be a bit overboard. Lastly, we learn about a Route 66 slaying that also involves more famous crimes of the era

I am very glad to have read this book. Any fan of true crime or even crime fiction should find this an excellent addition to their collection. The details and pictures are well done as is the writing. Mr. Morrow nail this one.
