Again, another book in need of some serious proofreading.....in the first paragraph no less!

The author is speaking of Marie, clearly a female and calls her a 'he' in the second sentence! Then the author goes back to using the feminine further down in the paragraph. After that, it's ok.

In general, more information could have been given to the reader. It feels as though the book was out together a bit too quickly.

No Happy Endings

When I read this book, it stoked an emotional fire which fuelled a belief in the politics of social justice. Tressell is not as misty-eyed or naive as most socialist writers. He doesn't rely upon an unrealistic belief in human nature. Instead, he tackles ignorance, short-sightedness and cynicism head-on.
No Happy Endings here - it could never be a Hollywood film. The bitterness and pain you feel at the end leaves you wanting to change the world. To fight those forces ranged against the underdog. Even though you'll probably lose.
Seen in that light it feels as relevant today as it was when it was written.
I was given the book by a much older friend. I've now bought copies for half-a-dozen people. It's one of those books you just should read to be an all-rounded person.

The book that won the 1945 general election for Labour

A brilliant, sad and moving account of life in Edwardian England for the working class "Philanthropists" struggling through poverty in order to make their employers rich. Though starving and wretched the majority of these working men react furiously to suggestions that their poverty is caused by their "masters" robbing them of the fruits of their labours. They are referred to as philanthropists due to their generosity of spirit and material wealth , gladly handing over all the benefits of the luxuries and necessaries of life which they help to create, to their greedy paymasters and employers. The solution to their problems is provided by the author as a Socialist, Cooperative Commonwealth of Nations under God, where the marvels of modern science and technology should be harnessed, owned by the people, and producing an abundance of the comforts of civilisation, not for one company's profit but for everyone's needs. An old lesson whose truths are as relevant today as they were when this masterpiece was written. A Socialist's bible if ever their was one.

Utterly unknown masterpiece

A friend of mine sent me this book, which I had never heard of at the time. If you get past the awkward title, and the somewhat purple Victorian prose, it really is a wonderful book. First and foremost, it reads really well. It's well-written, the story is compelling, and the characters likeable. The overall flavor I would describe as Dickensian, although nowhere near as baroque or whimsical. So it's not some boring polemic. And, second, it's socialist in its outlook. It explains socialism and the old Labour movement not in some theoretical, jargonistic way, but by means of practical examples that the central character uses to explain the movement to his co-workers. At the same time they're learning, you're learning, too - and it's very well done. Of course, the plot of the story drives home the lessons you've learned as well. And the arguments for more social equity work - I guess they can be argued against, if you're so inclined, but they're not at all simplistic or overly idealistic - they're really rather practical. Overall, a wonderful book for just about anyone thinking about the construction of society - even capitalists who'd like to cut their teeth against challenging political arguments.

Strong climate change analysis

I have been studying climate change since 2005, when I first became aware of feedback loops and tipping points that make the relentlessly ongoing increase of CO2 in the atmosphere especially dangerous – and not just in some distant future but within the lifespan of people living now.

I stumbled across a recommendation for this book in Jennifer Hynes's excellent videos showing how abrupt climate change could result from large methane releases in the Arctic. I immediately found Mr. Lister's book here and purchased it in e-book format for under four dollars, which was great.

This book, in my opinion, contains one of the clearest, most cogent explanation of climate change and the danger of abrupt change that has emerged since 2009, when the Keeling curve showed that the increase in CO2 reached a kind of inflection point. It answers numerous questions that are only roughly hinted at in most other climate change literature.

Quick read with science and sociology written like science fiction

Great book. Short, quick read. Written as a future history, based on what actually has happened, and climate scientist's best hypotheses about what will happen, and when given the current situation, combined with social science's ideas on how this might effect human governments and civilizations. It feels more like a science fiction story than a very good overview of realities of climate change.

Rosenberg's Breath by Breath is an elaboration on this short classic but couched in familiar language, liberally spiced with anecdotes from Rosenberg's decades of practice and teaching. It's Rosenberg's earthy humor and patient instruction that make him such a popular teacher and that make Breath by Breath a rewarding read. He takes the beginning student from the wandering "doggy mind" to becoming a chicken, along the way getting a teacher's bite and sitting like a frog. The basic Anapanasati Sutra

The Anapanasati Sutra is the simplest of the several teachings of the Buddha on mindfulness and meditation. In many ways it is the very basis of the Vapassana tradition and the core of Insight Meditation. Mr. Rosenberg does not get carried away with this teaching, but approaches the sutra in a traditional manner. Of the many meditation books I have read, including better known Insight Meditation books, this is the easiest to understand and follow. Mr. Rosenberg is a very experienced teacher of this approach to meditation and the book shows it.

This was the only Dharma book I took on a self-guided meditation retreat last winter. I am now on my third reading of it and I am finding it as helpful now as the first time. If you are interested in a basic approach to Insight Meditation and a clear description of the Buddha's most elementary teaching on meditation, this is for you. I give this my highest recommendation.

Witty and Interesting Meditation Guide

I picked up this book after a professor read excerpts from it out loud in a class. I was taken with the author's wit and writing skill. This is an absolutely essential guide to meditation, great for beginners, advanced students, and folks like me who are just interested. Very clear, entertaining, lots of antecdotes. Not a dry tome by any means, but not a frivelous book either. It does get to be a bit repetitive at times, but otherwise, well done!

Excellent... highly motivating... very promising

I am one of those people who wish it was easier to sit for an hour a day. I am one of those who is struggling to motivate myself to pursue what I have come to believe is an essential part of my life. This book is one that constantly makes my efforts and my struggles easier and keeps me motivated. I just wish I could do justice to this author's efforts in sharing what he has had the good furtune to have gained. I have given my copy of this book away on a few occasions just to replace it with yet another copy soon after. If you are a meditation enthusiast, make sure this book is on your bookshelf, if not right next to you, always.

Wendy Barnes has worked very hard to create a "normal" life for herself. She holds down a full-time job and lives with her daughter in Orange County, California. Grateful to have a close

visits from her sons and family trips to Disneyland. She enjoys helping other survivors understand that healing is a lifelong journey, but one that can be achieved with commitment,
good choices, and a heart open to accepting a helping hand here and there along the way.

All criminal court lawyers should read this book.

With this powerful memoir, trafficking survivor Wendy Barnes casts off the cloak from the shadow-world. Her inspiring story also compels those of us who work in criminal justice to reexamine our handling of these cases. Are we doing all we can for our clients? Are we helping, or hurting?

The author invites us to enter the justice system we claim to know so well -- only this time, to come without power, frightened, handcuffed, anxious for any good news. We are to stand there naked of our years of experience, devoid of our special training, and rely entirely on others to explain all....It was difficult for this former public defender even to imagine such a position, but Barnes' eloquent storytelling bridges that gap, slipping the reader's feet into her shoes so deftly, we do not even realize it has happened until we are trembling. She is a gifted writer, and I rejoice that she has found her voice and determined to share it with us.

At one point, Wendy's defense attorney counseled her to accept a deal which, at the time, seemed golden. Though the author never directly criticizes her lawyer, I saw plainly, as I continued to read, that her plea had tremendous ramifications which would take several years and a legitimately Herculean effort to overcome. I don't know what happened in Wendy's courtroom, or whether any better options were ever realistic in her case; but it does seem clear that Wendy did not fully appreciate the terms of her plea bargain when it was tendered.

Legal professionals know the rules; we know what sort of information we are required to share with our clients. But are we really ensuring defendants understand what we are saying? Are we too caught up in our own workloads to appreciate the magnitude of a single case to a single defendant's life? This book doesn't ask these questions directly, but I hope it will push lawyers to ask them of themselves.

WOW! Could not put it down

Once I started the book, I did not put it down until I was finished. You will see what I mean when you start reading it.
Wendy has spent the last ten years developing how to tell this story in a way that describes how believing in yourself and getting the right people around you WILL get a person to where they want to be in life. She has written many books before and now with her incredible editor Susan, she has done it.
While reading this book, you will begin to understand the torture and mental prison that people from human trafficking feel, why “just making the choice to get out of this world” is not as simple as it sounds and most important, she shows you that it is possible to get out of human trafficking.
In the end, you will not only see that life continues – it continues in freedom.

I've read pretty much every memoir that's been written about sex trafficking. This is one of the most realistic and certainly the best written. If you want to understand what it's really like, from someone who's really lived it, this is the book to read.

Samurai!, first published in 1957, is the war-time account of Saburo Sakai, the leading Japanese fighter ace to survive the Second World War. Sakai, born in 1916, hoped to escape the poverty of life in his rural village by enlisting in the Imperial Japanese Navy at age 16. In 1937, he graduated at the top of his pilot-training class, and soon saw combat in China. Later, against the Allies, Sakai engaged in more than two hundred dogfights, from the Philippines to Iwo Jima, and by war's end had reportedly downed a staggering total of 64 Allied aircraft. His most renowned accomplishment occurred after action over Guadalcanal in August 1942; partially paralyzed and nearly blind from multiple wounds, Sakai managed to fly his damaged plane 560 miles to Rabaul and safely land his Zero fighter. By the end of World War II he had logged 3,700 flight hours, including some 1,500 hours in the Zero. Samurai! provides a unique look into the Samurai character and the human emotions of soldiers in any war, regardless of race or nationality. In addition to Sakai's personal story, the book remains an invaluable eyewitness account of some of the most famous battles of the Pacific war. This new edition includes nine pages of photographs.

About the Author
Dr. Day was born and reared in Middletown, Ohio; graduated from Ohio University; and received his M.D. degree from what is now the University of Toledo College of Medicine. He interned at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and did his residency at Methodist Hospital of Indianapolis, Indiana. After spending several years in the U.S. Army, he has spent the remainder of his medical career in central Indiana. Throughout his career he has taught medical students and other medical professionals. He has also volunteered his services, medical and otherwise, in a number of ways. Admittedly a slow learner, Dr. Day is still practicing medicine; he hopes eventually to master it.

A Great book

First of all I am proud too say I went to High School with and graduated with Dr. Michael E. Day M.D. Because our graduating class was over 500 students I did not know Michael when we graduated 50 years ago June of 1965. But when looking back at my year book his face does look familiar. Now about his book. I worked as a registration clerk in the ER for 2 years back 1985-1987---2nd & 3rd shifts. I learned a lot about doctors, patients, nurses, the different kinds of people on a medical staff, etc. I moved on to billing insurance. But my life has been forever changed by working with doctors, etc. This book brings back a lot of memories of the loving, caring, knowledgeable human beings that doctors are. I really am enjoying this book not just because Michael and I went to the same school but because he is a kind, loving and knowledgeable and will versed physician. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to see the other side of being a medical doctor. I am hoping when our reunion comes up Sept. 5th that I will be lucky enough to congratulate Dr. Michael E. Day M.D. in person. Well done Michael will done.
