Each organization's ability to mobilize effectively, execute strategy, coordinate efforts, manage disunity, and process information depends on how well its structure matches its ability to keep its rivals at bay. Centralized organizations, Sinno finds, are generally more effective than noncentralized ones, but noncentralized ones are more resilient absent a safe haven.

Sinno's organizational theory explains otherwise puzzling behavior found in group conflicts: the longevity of unpopular regimes, the demise of popular movements, and efforts of those who share a common cause to undermine their ideological or ethnic kin. The author argues that the organizational theory applies not only to Afghanistan-where he doubts the effectiveness of American state-building efforts—but also to other ethnic, revolutionary, independence, and secessionist conflicts in North Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.

Strongly Recommended by BGen McMaster in Talk at ODNI

This is one of two books strongly recommended, with deep admiration, by BGen McMaster, USA (Ret) speaking to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) on 19 January. The four page trip report on his remarks about improving intelligence in support of the multinational mission in Afghanistan has been posted to Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog.

I have bought this book and will review it within two weeks. The key point that General McMaster made in referencing the book is that the author of this book has it right, there is no such thing as a leaderless jihad, and it is vital to be able to identify, understand, and interdict the often obscure means by which a jihad "organization" is formed and operated.

General McMaster also recommended Drugs and Contemporary Warfare. In my own review of Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001 From that review pending my doing a complete proper review of this book:

The most important point in the book is not one the author intended to make. He inadvertently but most helpfully points to the fact that at no time did the U.S. government, in lacking a policy on Afghanistan across several Administrations, think about the strategic implications of "big money movements." I refer to Saudi Oil, Afghan Drugs, and CIA Cash.

The greatest failure of the CIA comes across throughout early in the book: the CIA missed the radicalization of Islam and its implications for global destabilization. It did so for three reasons: 1) CIA obsession with hard targets to the detriment of global coverage; 2) CIA obsession with technical secrets rather than human overt and covert information; and 3) CIA laziness and political naiveté in relying on foreign liaison, and especially on Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Dispassionate but essential reading (for a select few)

This work endeavours to use organisational theory in order to analyse the growth and effectiveness of the various protagonists in Afghanistan from 1979 onwards. The result is a scholarly and at times insightful work that attempts to define a model to forecast the effectiveness and probability of survival of an insurgent organisation or unconventional force based on a range of factors (not least it's degree of centralisation - surprising arguments include the assertions that in some cases foreign financial support or access to an indoctrinated manpower is less decisive than commonly expected), and makes a plausible case that state actors and conventional forces should be cautious about emulating decentralised, 'networked' structures that insurgents adopt out of necessity rather than choice.

Two weaknesses are the relatively dispassionate and clinical approach, which fails to highlight the effects of the attitudes of various organisations to the use of force as a means of seeking compliance and securing support (willing or otherwise) at the tactical level, and the fact that despite publication in 2010 the analysis concludes in late 2005/early 2006. As a consequence, the analysis of the post-2001 insurgency is considerably less comprehensive than that of earlier chapters, and some of the authors wider assumptions (e.g. that Iraq was obviously a complete failure, so at the time of writing the ISAF effort in Afghanistan was doomed to failure as well ...) and conclusions are certainly open to question. That said, his analysis of the ANA and Karzai's government was comprehensive and accurate, and it would be interesting to see if a second (updated) edition could shed more light on the inner workings and tensions of the post-2001 insurgency.

If you are looking for a general introduction to post-1979 Afghanistan this is far too narrow and specific a book to start with, and even if you expect to be operating over there at the tactical level there are other works I would recommend first. If, however, you expect to be involved in operational-level planning or have an interest in both organisational theory and COIN (surely it's not just me?) this is definitely worth a read and careful consideration.

I am like Bar-Kochvah, I look the lion in the eyes and defeat him. I am from Palestine and I am strong!'

From the moment when he was torn from his mother's arms in the Zychlin Ghetto until he reached the coast of The Holy Land once more, he passed a journey full of obstacles but he founded a glorious family. Thanks and respect for reading my book! You have accompanied me through the atrocities of the death camps; you have witnessed and even experienced my misery and endurance. But, I had faith:
 
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." (Psalms 23, Verse 4)
 
The language is too limited to express the dimensions of the abominations of the Holocaust. Nevertheless, I managed to rise from the ashes and to rekindle the fire of hope. I came back from hell.
 
A new dawn will rise devoid of racism and hatred! The world will study war no more!
 
It is of utmost importance to leave a legacy to the future generations: never again!
 
The number on my arm, 142439, should serve as a warning to humanity against the powers of evil.
 
We, the generation of the holocaust and our descendants, should guard the flame of humanism and be the beacon of humanity! Join us in the sacred mission!

Dear Abraham,
 
When I completed the reading of your book, I felt a strong urge to express the feelings that it evoked in me.
 
I read a book about a man who comes to the bank occasionally, who always smiles and shows patience. Apparently, he has had a quiet uneventful life, devoid of any suffering.
 
But when I read the book, I was amazed to realize what a powerful and strong man was standing before me!
 
I admire you for the journey you have accomplished, the way you behaved, the goodness and the giving you had in you even in the hardest moments like in the case of the water that was offered to you by the generous Polish woman and instead of quenching your thirst, you passed the bottle on to the others. It is so moving to see what a mighty man is standing in front of me!
 
You really fought like a lion and similar to you, there were others who prevented the Jewish People's extinction, so that we should be able to live in the State of Israel, that we should prevail.
 
You should be proud that you did it like a hero, like a lion, like Rabbi Akivah, and that you founded a family with children and grandchildren and kept your faith.
 
You have rare resources that do not exist in other people, you have rare goodness, you always smile, are always optimistic; it is a pleasure to give you service and now, when I understand the source of your strength, I get a sense of proportion about what we complain and cry about.
 
It is important to me that you should know that I cried throughout the book and I learned a lot from you. Only God knows how you found such powers of survival! You are an amazing human being! I appreciate and admire you and I am sure your family appreciates and admires you none the less.
 
I hope to be able to learn from you how to cope with hardships with such nobility of the soul and such strength and how to see the good in everything,
 
I wish you all the possible best one can wish a human being and that you should never suffer again! I wish you to be happy and have many grandchildren and grand-grandchildren and even grand-grand-grandchildren, enjoy every moment with them and may they offer you only satisfaction! I wish you to fulfill all your dreams!

I felt like I was there

This was an incredible, emotional read. It is the story of a young Jewish man growing up during WWII. His incredible faith and strength throughout all he endured are inspiring.
I cannot imagine being a young Jewish man with piercing blue eyes and blond hair. His Arian looks endeared him to the Germans and saved his life on more than one occasion.
This book is so descriptive, I felt like I was there, experiencing all the joys, pains and horrors that Abraham had.
The book takes you on Abraham's journey to Palestine, then to his original home then from concentration camp to concentration camp until he is finally free.
My respect had grown ten fold for all those that survived.
Abraham came from a loving family. He describes his mom as a lioness.
When the time came that he knew he had to leave to go work, he bravely left his family behind, knowing they were likely to die and if he had stayed, he would have too.
I do not want to give away too much of the book but it truly is an excellent read. I have so much respect for young Abraham. I did cry at some points throughout the book, the emotions it evokes in the reader are strong.

A Shining Star During Dark Times

This story provided by Abraham Levy (author) set around the Holocaust. This book is listed as a biography of that time and it is not the easiest read. It is very descriptive of the struggles of this man through persecution in a very dark time of our history. This book provides a very emotional roller coaster that will take you from sad, sickened, happy, and even elated. This incredible story had to have been terribly difficult to tell and share with us. I am usually not a big fan of biography stories because most of them are dry, boring, and drab. Which is not the case with this biography.

A short description of the story. This is about a young polish boy during the Holocaust times of our dark era. Where his blue eyes kept him from being prosecuted as a Jew. It tells of his trial and tribulations of dealing with his family being murdered. It also tells of what his travels were about as he was making his way back to Isreal. The title of the book comes in play when a young Jewish boy sabotaged the S.S. Commanders motorcycle while working in the motor pool. What this is was a fluke accident that the commander almost killed him for it. The young boy was cleaning the motorcycle and the carb was filled with water. The Commander took it out on a very cold day and froze up on him. Okay, enough with the story line of this book, I do not want to write a spoiler.

If biography and/or history is one of you main genre of reading, I do suggest this book then. This book is available in e-book and paperback both. I would like to thank EbookPro and affiliates for providing me this book to read and leave my opinion.

Abraham Levy was once a happy blue eyed child, spending time with his beloved family, running on the beaches of Tel-Aviv and creating hopes for his future. Life was good. In the late 1930’s, as he entered his pre-teen years, a time when you are expected to gradually begin evolving into becoming a responsible and productive adult, Abraham had an expedited crash course in the most horrific and haunting ways ever imaginable as he headed back to Poland with his cherished loved ones.

Everyone knows about the terrible crimes committed against the Jewish people during WWII. No need for me to describe those events in detail, especially when Abraham gives a first-hand account of the gruesome and heart wrenching scenes and episodes of inhumanity. Beatings, starvation, death and despair are counteracted by hope, bravery, courage and the fight to make his mother proud.

This heartbreaking story was written with the blood, sweat, tears and raw emotions of a young blue-eyed Holocaust Survivor as the scenes that are forever burned into his memory spill out onto paper years later. Abraham entered that horrid experience as a young boy and in a way, became frozen in time. Even as an elderly man in body, it is obvious he is still that young child in spirit, looking for a place to hide from the memories and pain inflicted physically and even worse, mentally, while longing for his mother’s warm embrace and to see his family’s faces one more time.

I am compelled to extend a huge thank you to Abraham Levy for his bravery, not only during those disgusting years of our history, but also the absolute courage it took to share his story with all of us. It is impossible for me to try and imagine what it must have been like. How could I? As tearfully descriptive as his real life events are revealed, there is just no way I could begin to picture going through something like that, let alone survive and move forward in life. If I try to envision my children being ripped from my arms, never knowing their fate, my brain slams the door, locks it and tosses the key to that image immediately. My mother passed in an extremely cruel manner from cancer and it was my duty (and honor) to be by her side every step of the way. It was the most difficult time of my life. But, to have lost her in the manner that Abraham had to endure? Again, my mind does not even know how to comprehend such a visualization and is left speechless. And those are just two situations out of so many Abraham was faced with over years of torture.

I am actually at a loss for words on how to describe how it makes me feel down to my core. I am not sure if such words even exist. Do not get me wrong or misinterpret, I am very grateful and truly honored that Abraham entrusted mankind to read his story. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see a factual glimpse into the Holocaust and to learn about one boy’s determination and bravery.

Abraham, I know you made your mother proud.

Read it.
By loves a good story
Great book to narrow the political playing field for women and men who want to vote for candidates who fight for women's issues. Identifies those on the "right side of the dirt" from both parties. This book shows how we can fix the problems that plague our government by trying a new approach. The pictures and song lyrics spoke to my heart.

A Sense of Our Times

I've been reading the essays in Christopher G.Moore's "The Age of Dis-Consent." Some are familiar; I read them in their digital versions. But it's interesting: I read them on paper now - sitting on the veranda, outside Starbucks on Bangkok's Silom Road - and they are so much more meaningful, and enjoyable. It brings to mind eighteenth century London, Sam Johnson and his "Rambler" - and the other two, Addison and Steele, and their "Spectator." Bangkok is not London, and this is hardly the Age of Reason. But Moore's writing evokes earlier essayist, and the sense of their times they were able to bring to their readers. And that's what Moore does with our era - from the esoteric perspective of Thailand. And he does it well. His essays are well thought out and well-written, and they're always engaging. The learning he brings to his writing, of crime and the law, and of our new digital age, can make reading his essays an enlightening experience. It's always an enjoyable one.

Thought Provoking Essays

Christopher G. Moore is widely known of course for his Vincent Calvino crime fiction novels, having recently published the most recent in the series called '' Crack Down ''. He's a prolific writer with more than 30 published books to his name. I happened by chance to come across his work in the latter part of the 1980's, whilst visiting the book shops of Bangkok, Thailand. His name has appeared in those book shops constantly ever since.

I first fell in love with his short-stories and a book called '' Chairs.'' You know you've arrived in life when you have the best viewing chair.... Terrific. I wanted more short-stories and he duly delivered by putting together an array of top authors that gave us the brilliant '' Bangkok Noir '' and other short stories from around the cities of Asia.

Next came the essays. I wasn't sure that I could really get in to essays, I didn't know if essays were my thing, but I was wrong. It's a bit like when you hanker for the old stuff your favourite band used to play. The band have moved on to explore new ideas and the change of sound is not so appealing to you. It's more like change is not so appealing to you, but I had no reason to worry at all as the essays deliver, big time.

There have been some tremendous essays written by Christopher G. Moore over the last four years or so and those essay's produced four quality books. The books in the essay series are '' The Cultural Detective,'' '' Faking It In Bangkok,'' '' Fear And Loathing In Bangkok and the latest ''The Age of Dis - Consent.'' I count myself very fortunate to have all four books.

Christopher G. Moore is an explorer, an observer and a superb organizer of his findings. The essays always make you think and question the conventional and I like that.

The essays from '' The Age of Dis-Consent '' certainly cover a wide spectrum of subjects, but there truly is something for everybody. Here is a brief list and I mean brief on some of the subjects touched on.

There's political issues, law enforcement, language and cultural mindset that feature under the Thailand category of essays. There's a look at violence, systems and the boundary lines of our lives. A look at the way crime is tackled and crime investigating in an ever changing world. He delves into the fascinating subject of time, a subject that has always intrigued me. There are essays on the subject of information, another fascinating subject. Finally, we are taken in to the world of writing and authors. However, as I said, this barely scratches the surface.

I of course have my personal favourite's and there's a couple of essay's that are right at the top of my list.

The essay called '' Beagle Sailing Lessons for Writing '' is basically like attending a workshop on writing - it's packed with tips and advice. All authors have their various means and ways for producing their work, but this essay is a magnificent insight into how Christopher G. Moore goes about it.

" This is a look into my writing process. Other writers will have their recommendations as to how the process works. I love the sense of the unknown and the adventure of exploration. I find an idea, a character, a theme for which I have a passion. Without passion to sustain you, it will be a long, lonely and isolating voyage. Find a subject that you feel passionate about and then go sailing on your own personal Beagle."

An equally superb essay is '' Man With a Scarf.'' In this essay we are reminded how observing the finer details can lead to a fuller and richer life. This is a terrific read. I have read this essay about 12 times now and each time I read it, I seem to find something else new. It's great.

Another very enjoyable essay was ''An Orwellian Look at Henry Miller.'' It was based on George Orwell's review of Miller's book '' Tropic of Cancer.'' There was a class divide between the two, but a respect of Miller's work by Orwell. The description of the two authors by Christopher G. Moore indicates just how big the divide was.

'' Miller, an American, was an escape artist, a hustler, and sensualist. Orwell, an Englishman, was a Barcelona street fighter and British colonial official.''

I enjoyed that Orwell had admiration and respect for the literature of working class Miller and I admired greatly that Miller had the courage to write about whatever he wanted to and to hell with what anyone thought. Christopher G. Moore captures this all perfectly in this essay.

The essay called '' Updating Madness looks at language and essentially the trio of words that are '' insanity,'' '' craziness,'' and '' madness.'' It's amazing how the meaning of words can take on a gradual change over the years. The essay combines these three words with authority, bucking the system and all via the vehicle of one of my favourite ever movies called '' One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.''

Finally, there's an essay called '' Duration '' that I found particularly interesting. In this essay the author takes a look at '' time. '' I have always been fascinated by the subject of time and found this very thought provoking.

I highly recommend '' The Age of Dis-consent.'' It's a book I totally enjoyed and at the same time learned an awful lot from as well. To be honest though, I am just pleased that I have the complete set of all four books as I have the luxury to delve into any essay at any time.

Timely Essays sure to become Timeless written by my Favorite Living Essayist, Christopher G. Moore

Christopher G. Moore is, simply put, my favorite living essayist. The Age of Dis- Consent comes with endorsements from a favorite political analyst, Kong Rithdee whom many will know from his work at the Bangkok Post and Thitinan Pongsudhirak a professor at Chulalongkorn University and prominent political analyst in his own right, readers will find themselves choosing from an array of essays which combine Thai politics and societal issues. The topics effect every man and woman, regardless of where they might call home, while blending in literary elements, which I particularly enjoy about Moore's writing style. Individual essays are devoted to George Orwell, Kafka and Henry Miller.

This is the the fourth book of essays penned by Christopher G. Moore, also known for his Vincent Calvino crime series. The Age of Dis-Consent follows up on, The Cultural Detective, Faking it in Bangkok and Fear and Loathing in Bangkok.

The title is well thought out. These are not agreeable times we live in and permissions have been taken away, not granted, worldwide, particularly in the country Christopher G. Moore has called home for decades, Thailand. Moore helps identify not only the known permissions taken away but the ones not thought of by everyone.

If you want to make a bit of sense out of a very foggy world, Moore shines an effective fog-light into the distance, which simultaneously helps the reader see the world better, while reflecting on the fog particles themselves.

The book is broken down, conveniently, into seven sections: Thailand in the Age of Dis-Consent; Thai Law Enforcement and Cultural Mindset; Evolution of Violence & the Borderless World; Crime Investigation in a Changing World; Space, Time, Technology and Cultural Gravity; Information and Theory of Mind and; On Writing and Authors.

Two of my favorite essays in the book are, Personalized Swat Teams for the Filthy Rich, about the growing wealth inequalities in the world. You don't have to read the 700 page book by Thomas Piketty, Capital in the 21st Century, read Moore's 11 page essay and you'll learn plenty. In Violence: The Next Big Leap, Moore writes of the great experiment of domestication, drone warfare, and how the inevitable technological blind spots may pave the way to where it all began.

Another favorite is, Man With A Scarf, an essay about the legacy of artists in general and one fascinating one in particular, Lucian Freud - the grandson of Sigmund Freud and one of the most important painters out of England in the last century. A quote from that essay:
