Francine Marie Tolf has published two poetry collections, Rain, Lilies, Luck (North Star Press of St. Cloud) and Prodigal (Pinyon Publishing), as well as a memoir and five chapbooks including Eighteen Poems to God and a Poem to Satan by Redbird Chapbooks of Minnesota. She has received grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board; Barbara Deming / Money for Women; and the Elizabeth George Foundation. Francine lives and works in Minneapolis.

Joliet is in my blood!

Francine puts you there with her, in her narrative, she has a rare talent that few writers have, in that she can make you feel as if you are right there with her as part of her. Joliet is in my blood, which is why I chose this book to read (that and the fact that I went to high school with Francine). I was pleasantly surprised at her writing talent and her ability to make you feel as she did, in any given situation. I will say that, I had always felt she was one of the popular girls when we were in high school. Little did I know that she didn't feel that way, so I guess it is a matter of perspective. Regardless, Francine is a very talented writer and I look forward to reading her other offerings!

Francine Tolf’s essays on growing up in Joliet, Illinois magically transported me to my own childhood and youth, despite my growing up in a different time and place. She aptly captures the daring and wonder of childhood, that uncertain certainty of teen years, and the bittersweet feelings that come with truths borne of experience and reflection. This book spoke directly to my heart, as Francine Tolf’s poetry and essays seem destined to do.

About the Author

terrible how humans can treat others humans

I have read both books , the gotti jr book is a compelling story about his fathers prison treatment, terrible how humans can treat others humans, tough to be a family member and watch your loved one suffer... As far as gotti JR speaking to his involvement in the mob falls way short, I thought he would tell the truth . His view is an insult to the readers. Alite's book comes off very strong , he takes blame for his crimes and speaks to the violence of the mob. When reading true crime , the reader wants the truth.. Alite explains his way throughout the book. The most telling for me was the report they call 302. JR Gotti has lied through out his book and in the press about not going into the police and giving up info about his cronies.Alite clears the air and exposes this guy for what he is ,a fraud..

Exposes the Gotti Empire as a sham

Great book. Mr. Alite really opens up how the entire Gotti family operated:self-centered, sense of entitlement and all-in-all "bad" gangsters b/c of John Senior's lust for publicity. Also portrays Junior Gotti as a fake tough guy who would run at the first hint of trouble. Junior has denounced this book as a pack of lies but it reads true: the author does not portray himself as a particularly good guy and seems to be telling his story as it happened. Lots of mob books read false,they do not capture the voice of the supposed wise guy author and omits the small details this book contains that gives it credibility. Fascinating read.

Great read for people who love gangster books.

Great read and fascinating stories. I don't understand how the previous reviewer could wish for law enforcement to "back up" every anecdote in this book- it would make for a much less readable book and anyway, the title says it is "the story of John Alite." I assumed it is up to us as the reader to decide what we believe or not, and to enjoy a great book while we do that. I really liked his tales, and trying to decide what I thought about them. And Anastasia's anecdotes about other mobsters in the same time period helps give things a reference point.

Wright's After 9/11 Truth will give you good reason to bring it front and center

This is a powerful and engaging book that is as timely as spring after a hard winter. For awhile now, I've put 9/11 on a back burner- I think quite a few have. Brian R. Wright's After 9/11 Truth will give you good reason to bring it front and center. If you have even a small doubt about the official story of 9/11, you ought to read this book. Pardon my aside here, but almost every "official story" in history has turned out to be largely or even entirely false. The triggering events for wars are often fabricated- why should 9/11 be any different? Starting with the imagery on the cover- the three, count 'em, THREE towers. It presents on the front the simple arithmetic that I was unaware of for six years (thank you, mainstream media): three skyscrapers fell that day, not two. WTC-7 was a 47 story skyscraper untouched by any plane that fell neatly into its own footprint late in the afternoon of 9/11/2001. If you need to brush up on any of the numerous reasons the official story is a steaming barge load of lies, Wright has helpfully provided sources. But what Wright does with this book is far more than just inform you, or connect you to sources of information- he gives you some optimism. We need it. He also presents some ideas that are life-changing and very positive, ideas that require some work (what doesn't?) and apply to a lot more than just 9/11- these in no way diminish the importance of that horrible event- but it has always been more than just about 9/11.

This book changed my life!!

This book is an amazing blueprint for 9/11 truth and liberty activists to follow. You always hear so many people talking about Building 7, the destroyed evidence, nanothermite explosives found in the dusts in the WTC buildings, the PNAC report, NORAD missile defense systems standing down, and so on. And of course all of that information is highly accurate and worth spreading, but nobody really focuses on where to go next. That is what this book does. It outlines a path that we must take to put the truth to work and use it to bring about fundamental reforms that bring an end to false flag terror and the constitutional abuses that it has allowed. This book is a must-read. Pick it up, you won't be disappointed!!!

quickly gets to the relevant points

Brian Wright gets right to the point in After 9/11 Truth. Using the extensive list of facts and contradictions that have been collecting since that fateful day, he presents a plan for educating the masses about the ultimate con job that was 9/11. I found the reference lists useful and the embedded graphics instructive. No, this is not a rehash of what likely happened and how it is different from the official tale that spun out of the 9/11 commission, it is a straightforward plan for what to do about it. In this book, Brian lays out a simple and effective plan for how to defeat the "official" story we were all told. It's a quick read of simple things anyone can do. Every 'truther' should read this book.

A wonderful story of this young teacher's Waldorf experience. Ms. Cox gives us not only a view from within the Waldorf School, but from within a young person finding their way in the workplace. If you are curious about Waldorf, this book is a great peek without getting too technical. If you care nothing about Waldorf, this is a great peek into the life of a young woman realizing the direction she wants her life to take.

Lani is a witty, clever, and fun to read author. Her open vulnerable style is completely refreshing. Relax, read, and enjoy this story about her first encounters as a young woman with the realities of education and the work place.

A very candid memoir, a courageously honest writer

Blogger Lani Cox is known for writing about being an American expat living in Thailand. Her new book is ‘missing teacher’ (stylistically spelled in lowercase) and is a memoir concerning her training as a teacher. Personally, I am interested in the overlap of expat issues and education. However, the memoir primarily takes place in the United States and only briefly delves into moving abroad at the end.

Her account of training into the alternative field of Waldorf schools is very candid. Right from the beginning she shocks the reader with intensely personal anecdotes. The reader sees that Ms. Cox is an introspective person who went through many trials as she took up teaching.

The Waldorf system, sometimes referred to as a cult, is not your standard K-12 curriculum of standardized tests. She was trained in the peculiarities of their own system, which seeks to foster creativity and the spirt. The work was hard, and at times the reader wonders why she preserved. She was thrown into the first grade, and harshly criticized by various coworkers and parents while simultaneously learning to foster her motherly instincts. Any teacher will say it comes with the territory, but to her it seemed particularly harsh. When she lets her guard down, it goes from bad to worse.

Some of the more interesting parts focus on her Thai background and family upbringing, and how that relates to dealing with children and authority figures.

The story is too detailed in some parts. She gives other characters colorful pseudonyms such as Mr. Worm and Mrs. Squirrel, so as not to be identifiable. The children are numbered, #2, #10, and so on. Even in her personal life she calls an ex-boyfriend the unfortunately-labeled Mr. Angry.

Ultimately, she failed. The story is about failure, but it’s also about picking oneself up afterwards and refusing to give up. The fact that she went through the experience actually inspired her to never give up teaching, albeit through different avenues.

Like many first books, it could have been further edited. Sometimes it should have been organized as more of a narrative – though it is nonfiction. Still, memoirs are not easy and the book is a promising first attempt.

A recommended tale for anyone interested in the inner lives of teachers, and anyone who has ever worried they haven’t fit in, whether at work or at life.

A Quality Business Book about Leadership, Technology and Entrepreneurship

This book stands on its own as a book about business, leadership and the implications of technological change. Yes, Charles, Acxiom and Arkansas play starring roles, but I disagree with the reviewers who say this is what the book is "about". Fundamentally, I see this book as a book about leadership and technological change and, as an entrepreneur myself, I was left wanting more. Oh, and by the way, the book is extremely interesting if you like cars, politics or business history. It is not every day that you find a technological whiz and businessman that can also tell a story. Yes, this book is autobiography, but it is a fun, thought-provoking read. Enjoy.

Interesting read

Having worked for 30+ years as Charles Morgan's assistant, I was not waiting for the book with great anticipation. I asked myself, "what could I possibly learn?" Surprisingly it was an extremely interesting read and I learned many things about Charles personally, and Acxiom, that I did not quite understand at the time many of these events were taking place - and I thought I knew everything! Highly recommend this book.

Engaging Read

An intriguing read, particularly for anyone involved in database marketing during this time period. Anyone who met Charles during his career at Acxiom will be glued to this story. Outstanding collection of insights from a man building a successful business (with a great team) and navigating difficult obstacles. The beginning is a wonderfully knit tale of how a young man developed and decided on the direction for his life. This is book to pass to my young son.
