Review
"With this latest edition, the authors have put together an up-to-date, understandable and comprehensive guide to the rapidly changing world of entrepreneurial finance. It is a user-friendly and pragmatic guide to a vital topic. Entrepreneurial Financial Management provides a useful survey of the many facets that go into financing a venture from a strategic and operational point of view." --Michael H. Morris, N. Malone Mitchell Chair in Entrepreneurship, Oklahoma State University

"Cornwall, Vang and Hartman's Entrepreneurial Financial Management is the best text available for students and entrepreneurs. The sections on bootstrapping, debt and equity financing take the reader from the smallest start-up business to the growing entrepreneurial firm. The book is well written and easy to follow." --George T. Solomon, Director, Center For Entrepreneurial Excellence, The George Washington University

"The acceleration of the business cycle, largely driven by technology, has compressed the development space for entrepreneurial start-ups and, it could be argued, for traditional financial accounting as well. This acceleration has created special problems for entrepreneurial financial management. This volume, which benefits from its combined academician and practitioner authorship, is a valiant effort to deal with these new realities by attempting to align financial management with this new business modeling. Highly recommended. Students at all levels; practitioners; general readers." --Choice

The Life of Samuel Johnson, by James Boswell

The Life of Samuel Johnson is a biography of Dr. Samuel Johnson written by James Boswell. It is regarded as an important stage in the development of the modern genre of biography; many have claimed it as the greatest biography written in English.

Samuel Johnson, often referred to as Dr. Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and has been described as "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history." He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's The Life of Samuel Johnson.

Great Book (Bad Edition)
By A Customer
Needless to say, Boswell's LIFE OF JOHNSON is one of the preeminent works of biography and should be read by anyone interested in Johnson or the genre. It is a great book (also great is W. Jackson Bate's SAMUEL JOHNSON [1st published 1975]which is a MUST for anyone interested in Johnson). But although I love the Everyman's Library, I do not recommend this edition of Boswell. Unlike the usual quality of the Everyman's Library, its Boswell is rife with typographical errors (there's even missing text!). Though it's the only edition of Boswell I've read, I regret that a correct edition is not on my bookshelf. That being said, if this is the only affordable hardcover version you can find -- and you buy only hardcovers -- go ahead and purchase the Everyman's despite the numerous and distracting errors.

nice but heavily abridged

I liked this but prefer the unabridged edition published by Oxford University Press (in their Oxford World's Classics series). If you're willing to read Boswell, spend a few dollars more for the OUP edition.

A Great Book, Funny and Profound
By Wanderer
Note: I made some immature Mormon angry because of my negative reviews of books that attempted to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews almost as fast as they are posted.

I must have really burned him or her because I've deleted this review and re-posted it and within an hour, I had a "not helpful" vote. Give me a break. That person's faith must be very fragile, indeed. Oh, well.

I'm trying to be "helpful," and you can see that it took some work to put this review together.

So, your "helpful" votes are appreciated. Thanks, and I hope you find some enjoyable quotations (below) from Boswell's wonderful book, but first a little history.

Samuel Johnson, the irascible but generous lexicographer of the eighteenth century, is mostly remembered because of Boswell, and Boswell is remembered because he wrote Johnson's biography.

At the time, Johnson was already famous for his "Dictionary of the English Language," an impressive work for the year 1755. Among many other writings, Johnson put out an edition of Shakespeare's works (1765), with valuable notes that are still referred to today.

Johnson published a "series of grave and moral discourses" in the periodical called the Rambler, but when it was translated into Italian, it came out as the ludicrous "El Vagabondo," something far from Johnson's pious intentions. And of good intentions, it was Johnson who said, "Sir, Hell is paved with good intentions."

"(Johnson's) defense of tea against Mr. Jonas Hanway's violent attack upon that elegant and popular beverage, shows how very well a man of genius can write upon the slightest subject, when he writes, as the Italians say, con amore."

Johnson despised Americans and was prejudiced against Scotland. He said, "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."

Johnson was a male chauvinist. Yet, he was "a king of men." He was a "robust genius, born to grapple with whole libraries," and although "indolence and procrastination were inherent in his constitution, whenever he made an exertion he did more than any one else."

As a person who is afraid of death in the normal sense, I was surprised that in spite of being very religious, Johnson had an extreme fear of death. "'The better a man is, the more afraid he is of death, having a clearer view of infinite purity.' Said Boswell, "Johnson owned, that our being in an unhappy uncertainty as to our salvation, was mysterious; and said, 'Ah! We must wait till we are in another state of being, to have many things explained to us.' Even the powerful mind of Johnson seemed foiled by futurity."

Boswell's commentary brings to mind a story told by St. Augustine in his monumental City of God. A philosopher was abroad a ship captained by a bad man, and after a violent storm, the fearless captain jeered the philosopher for his terror. Said the philosopher, quoting from a similar incident that occurred to the pagan Aristippus, 'A rogue need not worry about losing his worthless life, but Aristippus has a duty to care for a life like his."

"Johnson knew more books than any man alive. He had a peculiar facility in seizing at once what was valuable in any book, without submitting to the labour of perusing it from beginning to end." But he also held that it was important to "read diligently the great book of mankind."

"Why, Sir, I am a man of the world. I live in the world, and I take, in some degree, the color of the world as it moves along."

Johnson was also the one who said, "When a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully."

"I love Blair's Sermons," Johnson said. "Though the dog is a Scotchman, and a Presbyterian, and every thing that he should not be, I was the first to praise them. Such was my candor," he said with a smile."

Martin Sheen, best known for his role as a Catholic president in the prestigious television series The West Wing, returned to the practice of his Catholic faith at the age of forty after decades away. After years of battling alcohol addiction, a near-fatal heart attack, and a nervous breakdown, the stage, film, and television actor renewed his dedication to his family and activated his faith with energy, grace, and joy.

Through the sacraments, Mass, the rosary, the support of family, and numerous friends and peace and justice activists such as Daniel Berrigan, SJ, and the Catholic Worker Movement, Martin Sheen today sees himself as a man in the pew. He has been arrested more than sixty times for non-violent civil disobedience, speaking out for human rights. Sister Rose Pacatte's unique biography moves beyond tabloid news to include information and inspiring stories gleaned from interviews with Martin Sheen, his sister and brothers, as well as long-time friends.

People of God is a series of inspiring biographies for the general reader. Each volume offers a compelling and honest narrative of the life of an important twentieth or twenty-first century Catholic. Some living and some now deceased, each of these women and men has known challenges and weaknesses familiar to most of us but responded to them in ways that call us to our own forms of heroism. Each offers a credible and concrete witness of faith, hope, and love to people of our own day.

Review
It is good to read the story about what drives Martin Sheen, surely a candidate for the nicest guy in Hollywood, and yet spurred by a righteous anger against injustice. Sheen was a celebrity activist before celebrity activism was cool, and it clearly comes from his heart, his faith, and his God. We should feel obliged to Sister Rose for sharing the behind-the-scenes story of what makes this man tick.
Mark Moring, former movies editor, Christianity Today magazine

Wild then broken, only to emerge through the grace of Jesus as his disciple advocating for the vulnerable, marginalized and forgotten. Sister Rose' book portrays a man aware of our human oneness and frailties who stumbles on his ordinary walk of Love. Paying the personal price, surrendering over and over to the tender grace of Christ and by doing so transforming his own life and those he is asked to serve. I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you invited me in, naked and you clothed me, sick and you looked after me, in prison and you visited me.'" Come and see Martin Sheen.
Michael Harney, actor

Rose Pacatte's Martin Sheen: Pilgrim on the Way is easy to read and packed with new details that even longtime fans of Sheen are not likely to know. Her style is warm and her approach is personal. Sheen emerges as a passionate human being who never stops searching for his true self, which has led him into becoming a man for others.
Frank Frost, Director of Bernardin and other public television programs

Sr. Rose Pacatte's biography of Martin Sheen is a page turner. Sheen's spiritual journey is told against the background of family, acting career, social activism, and internal conflicts. Sr. Rose's intimate detailed account is moving, touching, humorous and real. The reader gets to know Sheen, his struggles and triumphs, his low points in life and the high points. What we get is the story of a pilgrim still on the way' in his personal and spiritual life. But what a journey!
Ron Schmidt, SJ, Documentary producer, Hope Media Productions

Knowing Martin Sheen through his acting and his Catholic activism, it was a treat to read Rose Pacatte's portrait and delve deeper into the life of this most remarkable man. Pacatte, who knows both the Hollywood and Catholic scenes, is the perfect person to write this book and she does so simply and cleanly. I came away from reading her portrait enriched and more hopeful about human possibilities, about virtue, and the way goodness can break through pain. A true spirit accomplishment.
Tom Fox, National Catholic Reporter Publisher

This little book explores the mosaic of relationships that make up Martin Sheen's life and community. It is nourishing to the spirit to get glimpses of his struggles and hopes in challenging times. His faith and authentic caring shines throughout demonstrating that faith in action is at the heart of his commitment and his craft.
Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director NETWORK, Washington, DC

In a world where "celebrity biography" has become synonymous with "scandlous tell-all," Sr. Rose Pacatte delivers something entirely fresh and urgent: a "spiritual biography" of a public figure. Martin Sheen: Pilgrim on the Way does not shy away from the darker moments in the actor's life, but puts them in the broader context of a bold Catholic journey, Sheen's continual search for both social justice and a much more personal truth. We come to understand this remarkably talented man in a way few celebrities allow: as a committed person of faith. Sr. Rose turns our expectations of celebrity upside down, compelling us to view her subject in a unique light.
Joe Ferullo, television executive and columnist for the National Catholic Reporter

Martin Sheen: Pilgrim on the Way is a celebrity biography unlike any other, and for one simple reason: it has a soul. Sister Rose Pacatte captures more than Sheen's well-known career trajectory; she also infuses his story with something akin to grace. More than an actor's rise to fame, this is the story of a pilgrim's progress-a stirring and inspiring glimpse into one man's journey of faith that will resonate with seekers of all kinds.
Deacon Greg Kandra, journalist and blogger, The Deacon's Bench

A look at the real man outside the tabloids.
By Sarasota Suncoast Reviewer
There are those celebrities we think we may know because we have seen them in movies or read about them in the tabloid magazines. Our image of them is painted by a secular look at their lives and a secular look at their struggles. We paint our own image of what we imagine their life is like. "Martin Sheen: Pilgrim on the Way" is a book that takes the reader beyond a secular look and into his journey as a Catholic man - a Pilgrim - on his journey of life. The book shares some of his struggles without bending to a gossipy, tabloid story ... this book mainly shares his journey as a human endowed with the gift of faith. It is this faith that pulls him through his many struggles and touches everything he does.

"Martin Sheen: Pilgrim on the Way" is an insightful look at Martin's existential search for meaning. Once Martin moves his life from a scattered and entangled superficial mode of being, he discovers a more simple and organized purposeful way of living. This purposeful living is what drives him to this day. Thank you Sr. Rose for capturing the true man outside of the tabloids.

The book is a wonderful read and can give us faith in those celebrities who are tying their best to be the best they can - for God and humanity.

Highly recommended.

A great read about a great actor and a great man.
By James Watrous
I'll be honest I bought this book at the Pauline Bookstore and not Amazon. Nevertheless, it's a great read and I hope people read it. I actually had the chance to meet Martin Sheen several years ago. He's a wonderful man. I've been a fan of his for years. He was great in a number of films, including BADLANDS, THE EXECUTION OF PRIVATE SLOVIK, APOCALYPSE NOW, OUT OF THE DARKNESS, THE FOURTH WISEMAN, THE DEPARTED, and THE WAY. And of course he was great as President Jed Bartlett in THE WEST WING. Sr. Rose Pacatte looks at his life from a Catholic spiritual point of view. Sheen, born Ramon Estevez, was raised in and Irish/Spanish Catholic household in Dayton, OH. As a young man trying to be an actor in New York he drifted away from his faith. But after his heart attack on the set of APOCALYPSE NOW he returned to his faith and became extremely involved with the social justice aspect of Catholicism. It's a very good read.

Very inspiring, sympathetic biography of a good man.

Homegrown Terror: Benedict Arnold and the Burning of New London (The Driftless Connecticut Series & Garnet Books), by Eric D. Lehman

On September 6, 1781, Connecticut native Benedict Arnold and a force of 1,600 British soldiers and loyalists took Fort Griswold and burnt New London to the ground. The brutality of the invasion galvanized the new nation, and "Remember New London!" would become a rallying cry for troops under General Lafayette. In Homegrown Terror, Eric D. Lehman chronicles the events leading up to the attack and highlights this key transformation in Arnold--the point where he went from betraying his comrades to massacring his neighbors and destroying their homes. This defining incident forever marked him as a symbol of evil, turning an antiheroic story about weakness of character and missed opportunity into one about the nature of treachery itself. Homegrown Terror draws upon a variety of perspectives, from the traitor himself to his former comrades like Jonathan Trumbull and Silas Deane, to the murdered Colonel Ledyard. Rethinking Benedict Arnold through the lens of this terrible episode, Lehman sheds light on the ethics of the dawning nation, and the way colonial America responded to betrayal and terror. Finalist in both Historical Nonfiction and Regional Nonfiction for the 2016 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.

Review
“Homegrown Terror is more than the dramatic story of Benedict Arnold’s betrayal of America. It is a richly textured and lively portrait of revolutionary era Connecticut. Readers interested in the American Revolution and historical New England will enjoy this book.”—Joel Richard Paul, author of Unlikely Allies: How a Merchant, a Playwright, and a Spy Saved the American Revolution

“Eric Lehman’s Homegrown Terror is the biography of evil personified by America’s greatest antihero. It is a tour de force of research, showing that evil can draw a society—or nation—together as effectively as can good.”—Christopher Collier, author of Decision in Philadelphia: The Constitutional Convention of 1787

“Benedict Arnold was a traitor—and a terrorist, as Eric Lehman vividly shows in his chilling account of Arnold’s savage raid on New London. At the same time, Lehman presents a new look at the psyche of a Revolutionary War general who was both a hero and a villain.”—Thomas B. Allen, author of Tories and George Washington, Spymaster

“It tells how Connecticut native Benedict Arnold and 1,600 British soldiers and loyalists captured Fort Griswold and burned down the settlement of New London in 1781, describes life in those times and explores how and why Arnold betrayed his countrymen and killed his neighbors.”—Carole Goldberg, The Hartford Courant

Lehman's historical narrative is an excellent retelling of this horrific and often overlooked part of the Revolutionary War. The discussion of Arnold's treason and subsequent massacre is superb and historically documented, while also being fun to read. His narrative style is excellent and I couldn't put it down. As an ancestor of the Averys who fought and died at the Battle of Groton Heights, including my 7th great-grandfather Lieutenant Ebenezer Avery who was killed, I am thankful for this addition to the historical record.

An exceptional account of the life of Benedict Arnold
By Lee A. Edwards
A wonderfully informative slice of history. I highly recommend Eric Lehman's book, Homegrown Terror: Benedict Arnold and the Burning of New London, for a fascinating portrayal of Connecticut during the American Revolution. This book should be used in classrooms to teach students about this era, and specifically the events that led to Arnold turning traitor. An exceptional account of the life of Benedict Arnold and other historic characters such as Jonathan Trumbull, Nathan Hale and Silas Deane, to name just a few.

Benedict Arnold
By avidreader
We all know Benedict Arnold as a traitor but we know so little of why he did it and what he was like before. Lehman writes a compelling story that you will not want to put down that fills in some of the empty spaces in our knowledge.

Thomas Cromwell: The Untold Story of Henry VIII's Most Faithful Servant, by Tracy Borman

Thomas Cromwell has captured the imagination for centuries, including recently in Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall and its stage and television adaptations. Long reviled as a Machiavellian schemer who stopped at nothing in his quest for power, in Thomas Cromwell, Tracy Borman reveals a different side of one of the most notorious figures in history: that of a caring husband and father, a fiercely loyal servant and friend, and a revolutionary who helped make medieval England into a modern state.

Born in the mid-1480s to a lowly blacksmith, Cromwell left home to make his fortune abroad, serving in the French army, and working in Florence at the height of the Renaissance. Back in England, Cromwell built a flourishing legal practice, became the protégé of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, and went on to become Henry VIII's top aide, where he was at the heart of the most momentous events of his time, from the Reformation to the downfall of Anne Boleyn. His seismic political, religious, and social reforms can still be felt today.

Review
Praise for Thomas Cromwell:

“An intelligent, sympathetic, and well researched biography.”—Wall Street Journal

“Borman unravels the story of Cromwell’s rise to power skillfully . . . If you want the inside story of Thomas Cromwell . . . this is the book for you.”—Weekly Standard

“Dr. Tracy Borman has crafted an exceptional and compelling biography about one of the Tudor age's most complex and controversial figures. With expert insights based on a wealth of research, and riveting detail, she has brought Thomas Cromwell to life as never before, and achieved a fair and balanced assessment of his character and his career. Above all, her book is a joy to read—a remarkable tour de force by one of our most accomplished historians.”—Alison Weir

“Excellent. . . . This deeply researched and grippingly written biography brings Cromwell to life, probing into his complex personality and exposes the Henrician court in all its brutal, glittering splendor.”—Independent (UK)

“Tracy Borman recounts persuasively and engagingly the tale of the meteoric rise of this complex commoner to the highest offices and dominant influence at the court of Henry and his just as meteoric fall from grace and execution.”—America

“Should be catnip to fans of Hilary Mantel's best-selling Wolf Hall novels about Cromwell.”—USA Today

“British historian Tracy Borman has unearthed previously unpublished evidence that casts a brighter light on one of the most ruthless of machiavellians in British history."—Guardian (UK)

“An insightful biography of a much-maligned historical figure.”—Booklist

“Borman combines a mastery of historical detail with a fast-pace and an accessible style. She doesn’t forget that she’s dealing with human beings, with their fallibilities and petty motivations . . . As a psychological subject, Cromwell is as fascinating as the man he served. No wonder we all want to know more.”—Independent (UK)

“Tracy Borman tells us succinctly in 400 pages what we need to know about the man who rose to be the king’s highest adviser. . . . [A] good book.”—Times (UK)

“[An] elegant historical biography. . . . [Borman’s] prose, as ever, glides beautifully along.”—Sunday Times (UK)

“A highly readable account.”—Financial Times (UK)

The Flanders Mare & the Game of Thrones
By Owl
It was no small thing in 16th century England

--to rise from a son of blacksmith to one of the richest men of a rich kingdom
--to escape from being another lean rascal on the streets of Rome to becoming the protegee of king's confidante, Cardinal Wolsey
--to have no formal schooling yet a polymath, to achieve a mastery of oratory, law, business, and finance, becoming a patron of the arts who could hold his own against highest nobility in hunting, the arts, statesmanship and the game of thrones
--to move rapidly from the periphery to the center of Henry VIII's reign
--to manage Henry's pronouncement of adherence to Catholicism and England's independence of the Pope
--to waft Anne of a thousand days to the Queenship, waft her out 18 months later, insert Queen Jane, marry his son to Jane's sister who thus became an uncle (an Uncle!) to the almost deified Prince Edward, Henry's only legitimate son and Jane's child

and

--and despite cunning, perspicacity, loyal servants and a notable private intelligence service, fulfill the saying "The higher you are, the farther you fall."

"Why" is the central question that makes this book so griping. Why did he rise? How did he rule England in all but name during Henry's merrier years? Why did he wind up like his mentor, the great Cardinal? Had Thomas Cromwell not negotiated a wedding with a woman at whom Henry took one appalled look and called "the Flemish mare," might Cromwell have died a wealthy old man rather than meeting a miserable end in the Tower? May be so....

Or maybe not. This wonderful history combines extensive scholarship including new materials with a fine analytic exploration of the whys and what-ifs. "Thomas Cromwell: The Untold Story of Henry VII's most faithful servant" combines the balanced, intense characterizations of a first-rate novel with the depth of a first-rate history.

Tracy Borman is an historian, a scholar, and a writer of five previous books about this period. This shows in every chapter as she traces the arc of Cromwell's life from what's known of his origins (darn little) through what can be said about his young manhood (considerably more) to the trumpets & diapasons of his long & faithful service of his master, the Tudor king.

Any Reader Alerts? This 400 page book is lengthier than page count alone suggests because every page is packed with ideas, analyses, facts, characters. It is not in any way fast food reading. There are about 20 pages of well-chosen illustrations and about 30 pages of notes & references. Sometimes, stories that seem to belong in the text are in the footnotes, so skipping is not advised. (For instance, want to learn what happened to Anne of Cleves, the Flemish mare? See p 435, note 1).

And for some readers, the extensive details on rebellions, dissolution of the abbeys, suppresions and the growing anger against Cromwell that made his fall as swift as it was----well, not much seems to be left out. There are extensive direct quotes, as other reviewers have noted, that may be off-putting to some readers. For me personally, as a commenter has suggested, it helped to read them aloud without fretting o'er much about the spelling differences 400+ years hath wraughtte.

Finally, as a reader alert, this is a history, not a romance or historical fiction. There are other, many other books, that feature Tudor bodices and beds.

But these, to me, are minor points in a magnificent book, a reader's delight, that connects with "Wolf Hall" admirably and extends our understanding of the rise & fall of men, women, the empires they seek to build, and the dynasties they want---so desperately--to endure.

An Excellent Life of a Chameleon Politician
By Suzanne Cross
I have read many biographies of Cromwell, who has fascinated me since childhood, but this is the best. In the 1960's, I saw Leo McKern's superb portrayal of Thomas Cromwell as a Machiavellian political thug in the Oscar-winning A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, in the last few years, Hilary Mantel made him the hero of her Man Booker prize-winning fiction. It's hard to know who the real Cromwell is, and several biographies have tried to tell us; I think this one has helped me most. There's no question that much of the English Reformation is due to Cromwell, that many highly intelligent and modern reforms were Cromwell's, that he was corrupt as anyone else in that place and time, that he was loyal and generous to his friends, that he believed firmly in an Evangelical God, and that he quite definitely tortured, murdered, imprisoned, defrauded, or framed anyone Henry VIII wanted him to, while frequently showing his brilliance and/or his compassion. Who was the villain - Cromwell or Henry VIII, and how do you come to understand such a man? I recommend this book to help you make up your own mind.

Good companion to Wolf Hall -- and nicely written history
By Montana Skyline
This is undoubtedly a nice companion piece for Hillary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" --- indeed, the author references Mantel and the revived interest in Cromwell. But this also is sound historical scholarship and well-told in its own right. Borman narrates the political life of the extraordinary (and unlikely) commoner who was decisive in re-shaping the English state and its religious institutions under Henry VIII. Although Borman's treatment is generally sympathetic to Cromwell, it is well-balanced, and by no means an apologia for a martyr. Cromwell was Machiavellian in both good and bad senses and a complex and fascinating character --- much more than the foil of that "Man for All Seasons," Thomas More, and arguably more consequential.

Borman includes a good deal of material that is original (at least to this reader), provides insighful analysis of the evidence, and speculates persuasively. Although this history can't match the page-turning drama of Mandel's fiction, the style is light and not pedantic. Some readers may find the extensive quotations in the English language of the time over-done, and this can sometimes interrupt the flow; however, I mostly found it added authentic tone, while providing additional insight into characters and context. On the whole, I think Borman does a nice job of meeting the demands of scholarship while narrating a tale of interest to the general reader, and that both scholars and general readers will find the style congenial.
