This story is about the remarkable Fr. Charles Kram, Jr., the quadriplegic priest who served for nearly twenty-five years as a hospital chaplain doing what he enjoyed most in life: serving God and neighbor with an enormous amount of love. By never complaining about his suffering of pain and the humiliation of his dependency, Fr. Kram raised suffering to the dignity of the divine. In this way, he accepted the circumstances of his life as the will of God. To complain against the will of God would certainly be unworthy of a true Christian. To accept his suffering as the will of God made Fr. Kram's suffering a source of joy, a vehicle of unity with God here on earth.

A Must Read. You won't be able to put it down.
By A. M. Germani
Anthony Warzecha did a marvelous job in writing this book, and capturing the spirit and life of Reverend Charles Kram, Jr. A must read for spiritual insights that will make the reader feel wonderful. Do yourself a hugh favor; read this inspiring book. I knew Father Charles, and was fortunate and blessed to work with him in the hospital. His cause for canonization in the Catholic Church is being studied.

Absolutely the very best book I have ever read
By Richard
Absolutely the very best book I have ever read. What an inspiration Fr. Charles Kram was. The author did a wonderful job telling Fr. Kram's story and sharing so many wonderful stories of those who were touched by Fr. Kram and what he did. I enjoyed the book so much that I ordered four copies in all; I gifted three of them to others. If you want to be inspired, buy this book.

Written by myself, Tracy Badenhorst. Jane's youngest sister. I am not a professional author, but wrote this story from the core of my heart. I relived all the years of Jane's illness, the memories, the laughter and the tears.

Excellent, Heart-warming story
By Leighann Hall
I have just finished reading this amazing book. I knew Jane from high school, and was actually one of the girls who went to see her in hospital. This book shows a side of Jane I remember so well, her caring, loving ways. Never could she see the bad, like on rainy days waiting for the rainbow!
The story is beautifully written, straight from the heart. I’ve laughed so hard that I woke my family on occasion. On another I sobbed so hard I could hardly breathe. It’s written with the love that all 3 girls were showered with in their early years. A family’s bond, so strong that nothing was to tear them apart. The principals of always sticking together, the love and discipline kept this family holding onto each other for all it’s worth. The weight that Karen and Tracy have had to carry is more than any child should have to endure. Being able to share such intimate moments is very brave and for that Tracy, I salute you.
Every day you hear the talk of people’s hardships, but maybe it’s time we stop being so concerned for ourselves and listen to the whispers of the Angels here on earth.
I never knew of the hardships the family had faced and it saddens me to think that I called myself her friend, but knowing Jane she would laugh at me and say something quirky.
Beautiful from the inside, an Angel sent to teach us all a lesson, we just need to listen.
Rest In Peace my special friend. Fly high with the butterflies.

Sad but inspirational story
By linda j
The story of Jane, a young girl struck down by a terrible mystery illness is told by her youngest sister Tracy. You will feel as if you know this family, both through their laughter and their tears, and you will laugh and cry with them. You will rarely meet such a brave person as Jane was, able to laugh and to really care about the feelings of her family and the people around them. I wish I had the quarter of the courage that Jane possessed. Yes, there may be a grammatical glitch or two, but ignore those and read the story. All Is Grace: A Ragamuffin Memoir, by Brennan Manning, John Blase

On April 27, 1934, a little boy was born who grew up to become a vagabond evangelist in patchwork pants fiercely daring us to believe a line too good to be true—God loves you as you are and not as you should be. His name was Brennan Manning. He boldly preached of the love of Jesus vast, unmeasured, boundless, and free. And he always faithfully pointed to a tender, elemental fury that blows where it wills; in a word, grace.

But before the fame of his ragamuffin gospel, Brennan Manning was a son, brother, soldier, journalist, priest, husband, father, and friend. This is that part of the story, a necessary piece of the larger puzzle of grace. These pages tell the story of a man whose name was not always Brennan.

Review
“Brennan’s memoir is at once unvarnished and confessional, grippingly honest and poignantly tender. An unguarded peek into a life marked by foibles and blessings, gifts and pain, joy and regret. But always, in every paragraph, grace. Brennan lived it, experienced it, and grasped the extraordinary power of God’s great gift.”Max Lucado, pastor and bestselling author

About the Author
Brennan Manning spent over forty years helping others experience the reality of God’s love and grace. This message was at the heart of everything he did. A recovering alcoholic and former Franciscan priest, his spiritual journey took him down a variety of paths. He taught seminarians, spoke to packed arenas, lived in a cave and labored with the poor in Spain, and ministered to shrimpers in Alabama. Brennan was best known as the author of the contemporary classics, The Ragamuffin Gospel, Abba’s Child, Ruthless Trust, The Importance of Being Foolish, Patched Together, and The Furious Longing of God.

An Offering of Grace and a Request for Grace
By Craig Stephans
In his sermons and books, Brennan Manning's message has remained unchanging: "God loves you as you are and not as you should be." Throughout his ministry, Manning has brought countless and diverse disciples to the awareness and acceptance of the love of "Abba" in the face of Jesus. Over the years, Manning has framed this message in so many ways...personal stories, parables, Scripture, theology, earthy experiences, glorious revelations and painful epiphanies--always with a unique passion for God's love. Now finally, Manning does his best to offer the message grace once more in part memoir, part confessions, part teachings of God's truth, part story in All is Grace.

Manning gives readers chronological sketches of his life that hit the highlights of his boyhood home life, beginning college, joining the Marines during the Korean Conflict, going to seminary, joining the Franciscans then the Little Brothers of Jesus, starting a Christian community in Alabama, ministering on a college campus, and then pursuing speaking and ministry engagements. Brennan shares how in the midst of these events he struggled with alcoholism to the point of being a falling down drunk that required treatment more than once. He also shares how he fell in love with a woman who would become his wife and then his ex-wife and the reason for him leaving the Roman Catholic priesthood. But once a priest, always a priest, as one of his friends writes in the book.

I became acquainted with Brennan Manning in 1990 when I came across a couple cassette tape sets of "A Week of Renewal" that Manning had done for parishes in 1976 and 1977. I listened to the tapes until they would no longer play and I had portions of them memorized. I have read all of his books and given away most of them for others to read, saying "You have to read this!"

In All is Grace, readers will hear some of the same stories that never cease to move us closer to God. We also see new glimpses into Manning's life, struggles and triumphs. These are particularly appreciated. Manning avoids details of his sins and failures but points them out enough for readers to know that any steps forward in his life were closely followed by steps backward. Like Philip Yancey in the foreword, I wonder about Manning's confession to breaking all of the Ten Commandments over again. Is this literal or figurative? In his heart, at least, they appear literal to Manning.

Manning emphasizes his addiction to alcoholism and its destructive force. He admits that no addict can avoid also being a consummate liar - they go together. In that vein of writing, this memoir seems part confession for apparently sprinkling his stories in the past with untruths to create more drama or toward the well-intentioned end of revealing God's love more. I was surprised to hear that his namesake Ray Brennan died in a house fire from smoke inhalation rather than falling on a grenade in Korea to save his foxhole comrades' lives, something Manning had shared in a prior sermon on Christ's love. Whatever the truth to Ray's death is, Manning and "Ma Brennan" became son and mother. Manning admits in his memoir to not being able to remember everything as he wished he could. Maybe that is why I was left still wondering about the man who has had such a powerful ministry to all sorts of people.

Manning responds to the question he thinks his followers may ask..."How could a man that seemed so intimate with God and Jesus' message and ministry of love and grace struggle so much with addiction, self-hatred, loneliness, and marriage?" His answer is to say, not flippantly, that "These things happen." He has always said that his life after Christ has not been an "upward spiral toward holiness."

Another thing that Manning has said in the past is to quote Carl Jung who when commenting on Jesus' teaching about "the least of these" said "`What if you discovered that the least of the brethren of Jesus, the one who needs your love the most, the one you can help the most by loving, the one to whom your love will be most meaningful - what if you discovered that this least of the brethren of Jesus...... is you?'" Could you treat yourself with tenderness and grace? What we learn from Manning's memoir is that he, like us, is one of the least of these brothers of Jesus and needs grace and the "accepted tenderness" of Jesus. Here, I think, is Manning's attempt to love himself and finally come to an acceptance of himself in writing, and it is for all of us who struggle, too, with self-acceptance and loving ourselves as we are. That revelation more than any knowledge is wisdom.

When Manning has told us over and over that he is just a "Ragamuffin," he wasn't kidding, and neither was he kidding when he told us that Jesus came for Ragamuffins. So did Brennan Manning. Thank God for him and God bless him.

Transparency and Hope from a Poor-in-Spirit Brother
By TypeFace
Disturbed. That's the best word I know to describe how I felt after finishing this book--but not for the reasons one might think. I was disturbed in a good way (more about that later). Having read much of Brennan Manning's work over the years, I was looking forward to hearing his story in his own words. I wanted to know the missing pieces, to understand better how the ragamuffin came to be such a wounded healer. I had gathered parts of Manning's story from his books and messages. However, hearing the earthy descriptions of some of his setbacks surprised me--but then again they didn't.

Manning has had an unusual life compared to some, full of diverse experiences in Europe and the United States (military service, joining a Franciscan order, campus ministry, leaving the priesthood, marriage, becoming a prolific author and speaker). However, his struggles are the struggles of every man who is not afraid to admit his humanity and need for God's grace. Just substitute the names and details of your own heartaches, failings, and fractured relationships. However, he's also been blessed to have dedicated, grace-giving friends who have lavished him with love along the way, a reflection of God's heart.

Throughout the book, I found myself hitting two buttons over and over--the thirty-second rewind and the stop--to meditate on a profound thought or reflect on how something Manning wrote informed an aspect of my own life.

Manning wanted to be brutally honest in sharing his story--though admittedly, he chose to leave parts out. Nevertheless, what he did share about his upbringing, the lack of a close relationship with his mother (he does know the freedom of forgiveness regarding this issue), leaving the priesthood, a marriage that ended in divorce, and his life-long struggle with alcoholism was revealing. As the apt title infers, that someone who wrestled as he did could write books that have brought healing to so many ("The Ragmuffin Gospel," "Abba's Child," and more) is evidence of the grace of God in his life--and through Brennan Manning, to us.

In his old age, he has three words to answer the question of how someone who wrote the books he did could repeatedly lapse into alcoholism. "These things happen." He responds to critics who say he preaches a cheap grace, saying "not so," that his message is a "banana peel" to the orthodox.

The narrator did an excellent job--his style was conversational, his inflections were appropriate. His speaking cadence was neither too fast nor too slow (as in some audiobooks). In short, I felt as though I was sitting in a large comfy chair in a cozy room by a fireplace, listening to Brennan Manning share from his heart.

So how did this book "disturb" me. It reminded me of what I know but need to remember every day--that the Savior came to bind up the broken-hearted, offering His yoke to those with heavy burdens, that we bring nothing to Him except our brokenness--and that is really where it starts for those who are truly poor in spirit (Matthew 5:3).

If you haven't read any of Brennan Manning's books, read them and then read this one-- or read this one first and then marvel at the wisdom that only a broken man can dispense.*****

A complimentary copy of the book was provided by the publisher, christianaudio.

The Ragamuffin's Last Stand
By Christopher R. Horton
This is a bittersweet read for me as it is supposedly Brennan Manning's last book. He has been one of a handful of authors that I return to often to read and find a common brethren in the Christian faith. Just as Manning has done in his previous books, he writes with honest reflection about his life and the lessons he learned while walking with God and without God. If there is one aspect of the Christian faith and theology that Brennan understands it is grace, although some of his life lessons cause me to cringe when reading about his journey to get there. His writing is such easy reading that I finished the book before I knew it and started over.

He begins with his childhood, moving into adulthood and to the present day, while weaving a story that is personal for the reader. At times it felt like I was reading fiction due to his fabulous storytelling. I laughed, I wept, I was encouraged and convicted, and these are the normal trademarks of my interaction with Manning's works. If you have read his previous books you know what you are going to get. The story of a ragamuffin is built upon the reality that Christians are not perfect, fall into hard times, struggle with life, but cling to the goodness of God, drinking from the cups of mercy and grace, and trusting in the work of Jesus Christ.

This memoir will remain in constant rotation year after year because through it, I am brought back to my place as sinner in need of a Savior. Thanks Brennan, you will always be one of my kindred spirits.

The Night The Midwife Came To Call, by Melinda Bybee

THE NIGHT THE MIDWIFE CAME TO CALL is the recollections of a modern Midwife. It is mostly autobiographical, although there are times when two situations of different births fit one birth with more excitement. All birth stories are essentially true, the names may have been altered for privacy of the client or the Midwife. The stories begin in 1974 and go through 2003. It would be impossible to recall all the births as there were sometimes 3 or 4 births a week, even 3 in one day at one point.
I have selected details from the most exciting births to keep your interest and for me to recall some of the most wonderful times of my life. I retired in 2003 as I was diagnosed with severe panic attacks. But the memories linger in my mind and heart, and I want to put them on paper in some fashion of organization to recall in my later years.
Also the parents I lived with and delivered for will enjoy reading their story and sharing it with the baby born.
I have lent my memories out to several friends for their opinions and they all said I didn’t write enough, they wanted more to read. I hope those reading this book will feel the same way, find a Midwife who also delivered babies at home and pick their brains for stories unique to them. Every midwife has her own stories that will delight and intrigue you, ones no other Midwife has experienced.
In the enclosed chapters I explain my desire of wanting to deliver babies at a time when hospital births were the norm, and my process of education to realize the dream. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I have enjoyed writing it down for you and for me.
Love and affection to all my babies and their parents and extended families I was able to meet at such a precious time in their lives.

Whats a midwife? Well I know now! It's Melinda Bybee.
By DONE
When I decided to read this book, I was a little like what possibly could be interesting about birthing babies? Then I decided to just read it and see if anyone could make such a subject interesting. Was I surprised. The personnel interest in each family was what made the book that much more interesting and surely worth reading. The love and kindness shown to the families was truly apparent. And the writer gets your heart involved in every single birth.
It would seem to me that all babies should be born with a midwife rather than a hospital setting. This is almost like a secret society of well educated, throughly efficient group of women who take great pride in what they do for others. Who don't do it for the money. But for the pure joy of helping to bring one life at a time into the world.
The amount of giving and love from this midwife could be felt in the reading of this book. If you weren't proponent of this type of procedure before. You will be after reading this book. I loved every moment. There must be a real void in Melinda's life, if she has had to stop helping others in this way. Thanks for sharing Melinda!!!

I received in my copy a week ago, finished it and gave to a pregnant friend for her to read. Without doubt I know she will love all the Insightful steps that will help her newborn baby girls development and nutritional needs as she grows. As a bonus, she will get many heartfelt and realistic stories of what child birth may be like. These stories are now part of my life as I love retailing them to family and friends. Wish that I could tell you one now! When you buy this book, you must read "Angus and Daisy" on page 81 (The story that I Re-tale the most.) I Promise you that you will be itching to tell this story to that pregnant woman in line at the bank or grocery store!

Louis Pasteur, by Albert Keim, Louis Lumet

This is a concise but comprehensive biography of the famous scientist Louis Pasteur. This is from the beginning: "Louis Pasteur is one of the glories of France, and, among them all, the one whose light shines clearest and most fertile in results. His name has radiated throughout the world and for scientists and laymen alike it symbolizes that spirit of humanity which strove to succour all the ills of his fellow me and that genius for invention which opened vast new horizons to the researches of science. His sovereignty is now undisputed, there is no nation which has not rendered him due homage, and, as his fame has widened, it has, according to his own desire, increased the moral patrimony and the intellectual force of his native land."

Good little history

Nothing real fancy, just a good old fashioned history book. A nice read, sort of when you were a kid, and still could get excited about learning new things. The book really feeds the imagination, and allows one to consider the possible.

keim's biography of pasteur is great and intelligent
By Michael R Adams
Keim wrote 100 years ago but for those of us who appreciate an old fashion approach to biography, showing the man in all his glory and humility he is great. Very well written. A classic. To add a little context I've actually sought out Keim biographies reading his Balzac and Dickens bio's as well. They are all shorter. This follows his standard 10 chapters or so with the first chapter being boyhood and fills you with hope and last chapter handles the end of their life and death and is always a little sad. He has a more intimate take on the figures he writes about yet objective and seemingly loaded with facts. Each chapter is one stage of life of some years and it goes quick unlike some of the modern 500-800 page biographies. This particular biography was perhaps a little more melancholic as Pasteur was often very serious(and seems self sacrificing not trying to directly capitalize on any of his ideas to make money directly beyond what a public figure can be awarded by universities/state). But we still through the book remember him as the boy he started out as, who was devoted to family and took some time to be able to move into life on his own. The handling of the scientific world and breakthroughs of Pasteur was involved in is very well done impressing you with significance of how what Pasteur did added up. Modern thinking has sometimes been critical of the pure Pasteur approaches citing we can sometimes be to 'clean'. But this takes you into a world that Pasteur was born in that was not really conscious of the theory of germs. The immediate benefits that all this yielded to impress the 19th century mind becomes apparent, such as the millions of franks saved by specific industries Keim talks about that Pasteur applied his ideas to(in all Keim's biographies he researches and comes up with exact figures of pounds franks that were involved at the time in matters) or the 1000's of people saved by his rabies cure at a time when mad dogs previously were simply a threat to avoid and if not you probably died. No matter what one may think of all this today we realize through this that it was indeed a revolution.

The Beginnings of Modern Lifesaving Medicine
By Rose C
Very good biography of one of the most important people who ever lived. His discoveries have saved more lives in my opinion than have those of anyone else in the history of medicine. The only thing I would have enjoyed more would have been an autobiography, but he certainly was too dedicated to his work to take time to write about himself.

Fanny Seward: A Life (New York State Series), by Trudy Krisher

On April 14, 1865, the night of President Lincoln’s assassination, Booth’s conspirator Lewis Powell attempted to assassinate Secretary of State William Seward in his home just blocks from Ford’s Theatre. The attack, which left Seward and his son seriously wounded, is recounted in poignant detail in Fanny Seward’s diary. Fanny, the beloved only daughter of Seward, was a keen observer, and her diary entries from 1858 to 1866 are the foundation of Krisher’s vivid portrait of the young girl who was an eyewitness to one of the most tumultuous periods in American history.
Fanny offers intimate observations on the politicians, generals, and artists of the time. She tells of attending dinner parties, visiting troops, and going to the theater, often alongside President Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary. Through Fanny’s writings, Krisher not only skillfully brings to life the events and activities of a progressive political family but also illuminates the day-to-day drama of the war. Giving readers a previously unseen glimpse into the era, Fanny Seward: A Life broadens our understanding of Civil War America.

Review
William H. Seward's daughter Fanny came of age during the turbulent years of the Civil War. She knew her father's colleagues in Lincoln's cabinet, including the president, and wrote penetrating comments in her diary about events and persons. Trudy Krisher's gripping narrative of Fanny's experiences builds toward its tragic climax in Lincoln's assassination and the vicious attack on Fanny's father right before her eyes, followed by the poignant anticlimax of Fanny's own death from the nineteenth-century curse of tuberculosis. (James M. McPherson, who is the author of Battle Cry of Freedom, the seminal book on the Civil War era. He is also Professor Emeritus of History at Princeton University.)

At last Fanny Seward, the precocious, perceptive daughter of Secretary of State William Seward, gets her own book, the book she deserves: warm and literate and engaging. (Walter Stahr, Presidential Fellow, Chapman University)

This well researched account of young Fanny Seward, resident of upstate New York and daughter of Lincoln's right-hand man in Washington DC, brings a human perspective to domestic life in the Civil War period. The poignant story of Fanny from childhood through early adulthood provides rich context to the well-preserved Seward House in Auburn, New York. (Deirdre Stam, Long Island University)

Though little known outside her family & circle of friends, Fanny Seward, daughter of Lincoln's Secretary of State, was witness to some of the most pivotal events and figures of American history during the mid-1800s. Krisher's excellent new book enables this shy young woman to finally step from behind the scenes of history and take center stage. (Jennifer Haines, Seward family historian)

Krisher treats us to a rare glimpse into a spirited and articulate single woman’s interior world, revealing how she navigated the gendered spheres of family, friendships, family, politics, community, and civic engagement with grace, poise, and insight. (Kate Clifford Larson, Ph.D., author, Bound For the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, Portrait of an American Hero.)

Krisher paints a lively rendering of the youngest child born to Frances and William Henry Seward and into a home of privilege and progressive politics. As a statesman, the world knows of Seward's exploits: successful lawyer, abolitionist, governor of New York, United States senator, unsuccessful campaign challenger of Abraham Lincoln for the 16th presidency, nine-year secretary of state for Presidents Lincoln and Andrew Johnson and purchaser of Alaska. Little is known, however, of "Fanny." With Krisher's latest work, readers can come to see the Civil War and the years leading up to it in a new light when they take in her warm 250-page account of Fanny's perspective on events. (Carrie Chantler The Citizen)

Trudy Krisher has breathed life back into a woman who died much too young….a wonderfully written book of a life bound up in our country’s most traumatic hour. A must read! (Historical Novel Society)

Love One Another
By Nancy A.
When historical fiction writer Trudy Krisher read Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin she became interested in Fanny Seward, the beloved daughter of William Seward who was Lincoln's rival for the Republican presidential candidate. He became his closest friend politically and personally. She also read James Swanson's book Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer. Learning that Fanny Seward had kept a diary and no biography existed, Krisher began her research that culminated in Fanny Seward: A Life.

Like Krisher I also was captivated by the assassination attempt on William Seward and by the role his daughter Fanny played in his life.

I was disappointed to learn that Krisher's original manuscript reached 600 pages but found no publisher. She had to halve her book. Early on I had wished to hear more of Fanny's voice through incorporation of her diary entries and writing. Happily these source materials do appear later in the book, especially as relating to the assassination attempt on her father's life.

The Seward family was privileged yet unpretentious, progressive and free-thinking. Frances Seward was an intellectual who preferred the introverted and quiet rural life. She was involved in the Underground Railroad. She knew Elizabeth Cady Stanton who described Frances as having "independence of character". Always in frail health Frances used her illnesses to avoid society.

William Seward was outgoing, sanguine, and personable...and "addicted" to politics. Goodwin in Team of Rivals tells how he was the most liberal Abolitionist Republican and assumed he would be nominated for their presidential candidate. He was too liberal, and Lincoln was elected. Seward was offered Secretary of State on Lincoln's Cabinet, and he assumed he would "lead" behind the scenes. Instead Lincoln won Seward's respect and loyalty.

Fanny was plain and conventional, a loving child, an adoring sister. Her family role was that of nurturer. Books were her first love, and writing her second. She wrote plays, poems, and a novel during her short life. Her power of observation and descriptive writing indicates that had she been born in another time perhaps she would have been a journalist.

Her father was publicly conservative about marital happiness, and her mother felt a woman could accomplish more of importance in the world when unmarried. Consequently, Fanny seriously considered writing as a career.

Her parents were often separated, Frances staying in Auburn NY while William lived in Washington D.C. with visits home as he could. Fanny spent a good deal of time with her father and was knowledgeable about all aspects of the Civil War. She visited the camps, the battlefields, and the hospitals. Fanny met national figures, becoming close to Dorothea Dix, superintended of women nurses, and to the renowned actress Charlotte Cushman, an emancipated woman who was also a closeted lesbian.

The biography's climax revolves around the events of April 14, 1865. While John Wilkes Booth and President Lincoln played out their roles in the Ford Theater, embittered Confederate Lewis Powell was lurking outside the Seward home, armed with a gun and a knife. William Seward had suffered massive injuries in a carriage accident, his jaw broken and his arm useless. Fanny had been reading to her father, and had just turned down the light. Seward's nurse Sergeant Robinson was in attendance. Powell was determined to fulfill his role and assassinate the Secretary of State, while a third member of the plot was to murder Vice President Andrew Johnson.

Read the book! I won't give away the story! Except to say that Fanny showed great spirit and selflessness in defending her father, and her actions likely saved his life.

'Blood, blood, my thoughts seemed drenched in it—I seemed to breathe its sickening odor. My dress was stained with it—Mother’s was drabbled with it—it was on everything. The bed had been covered with blood, the blankets & sheet chopped with several blows of the knife.'
Fanny was never in fine health, and tuberculosis brought an early death at age 21. She was not alive when her father died in 1872. His final words were "Love one another."

By Nancy Albert
What an interesting book. The author's love for her subject is evident and makes us fall in love with her as well. History lovers will enjoy reading about this sweet, sensitive young lady, who, although virtually unknown to us, was in the center of major historical events. This book is extremely well-researched and truly brings the civil war to life in a personal way.

Growing Up & Aware in the Civil War
By Story Circle Book Reviews
Trudy Krisher acknowledges that her father, who had a passion for the Civil War, prepared her for the task of writing about Fanny Seward. As a child, Krisher visited many Civil War battlefields and monuments with her family. She learned anecdotes and details about generals, their troops, and their battles. But it wasn't until she read Team of Rivals by historian Doris Kearns Goodwin that she began to learn about Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of State, William Henry Seward, and his daughter, Fanny (Frances Adeline Seward).

Now better known for his visionary efforts to complete the United States' purchase of the Alaska Territory (which was loudly criticized as "Seward's Folly"), William Seward had run hard against Lincoln for the Republican nomination in 1860. But when Seward lost the nomination to Lincoln, he campaigned hard on behalf of his former opponent, despite his deep disappointment. For his part, Lincoln recognized in Seward a man of integrity, and his appointment to Lincoln's cabinet proved to be a solid and important choice.

Like Lincoln, Seward was a doting father as well as a canny politician. He had three good sons, but his daughter was the apple of his eye, so he took teenaged Fanny and her friend along when he made a month-long campaign tour on Lincoln's behalf. This was just part of Fanny's remarkable exposure to important people and events, which she carefully noted in the diaries she kept from the age of fourteen until her untimely death just eight years later in 1866.

As Krisher studied the Seward family, she saw that bits of information about Fanny kept "peeping out" of other people's stories. She soon found she had a question that would not let her go. "What was it like to be the daughter of Lincoln's Secretary of State, so close to the anxieties—and dangers—of Civil War America?"

When Krisher read the microfilmed diaries, which have never been published in their entirety, she was captivated by Fanny and began to dig deeper to understand the girl and her experiences. Among those experiences, the most dramatic is surely Fanny's presence at the assassination attempt on her father, which was part of the plot that dealt Lincoln a fatal wound in Ford's Theater. But there is much more, including friendships with the Underground Railroad's Harriet Tubman and the humanitarian and activist Dorothea Dix. Fanny was well acquainted with the Union players in the unfolding drama of the Civil War, and as she grew into a young woman, developed a remarkably personal connection with many of them.

Fanny Seward camped on battlefields and worked in military hospitals. She saw terrible suffering and great heroism, and did her part to help. Yet she was a shy, sensitive, and awkward girl who rather slowly developed a more sophisticated understanding of the world around her. She was also a girl who loved to read and write, and though it would have been quite unusual in her time, Krisher believes that if she had lived she might well have gone on to a writing career. Certainly her diaries provide significant information, and though more of her writings might have been included in this biography, the quotations do give us hints of her intelligence, wit, and devotion to her family.

In telling Fanny's story, Trudy Krisher reveals the growth of a young American woman and puts it into a fascinating personal and historical context. The style reflects her experience as an author for young adults, yet she has created an engaging work for any reader interested in a fresh view of dramatic events in our national history. Fannie Seward: A Life deserves to be widely read, and Fanny Seward deserves to be remembered.

An Excellent Introductory Guide to Buddhism
By Cathy Wilson
Buddhism for Beginners is an excellent introductory guide. The author poses a great question about whether Buddhism is really a philosophy or a religion? Personally I opt for a philosophy because with religion itself often comes some sort of control factor driven often with fear. Calling religion a cult isn't far off.
I love learning about different "religions," and the mind-body free spirit connection here really does make sense.
Bottom line is the author does a really great job introducing all aspect of Buddhism, opening the door for further exploration. Nice job!
