What an excellant read! Very good depth and insight into one of the men who shaped the Soviet Union. I am reading a book on WWII and this read helped me understand how someone could be so be so ruthless and evil. Really good research. This read opened my eyes to the reality that there were some of the most evil men ,who had no thought about humanity, living and trying to rule the world .

A Fine Crash Course In The History Of Joseph Stalin

For $1 this 17 page essay covers a lot of ground very quickly, with several photos to help tell the story, written with an appreciable meaty literary flavor. The mildly poignant writing tone indicates an author who really cares about his topic, & made this a light, enjoyable, educational read.

If you're looking for a quick run-it-through-the-garden "big picture" review of Stalin's reign & his personal character before you delve deeper into history with thicker books...this essay is a great place to start to get you into the material.

Barring a few syntax errors, my one regret was that it wasn't longer. But I am impressed with how much ground he covered & how well he did it in just 17 pages. If Bankes updates this work to expand on this topic, I would love to download re-read the revised edition.

Inspiration for Life After 50

If you’ve ever wondered what you could achieve after age 50, Kristin Kaufman has an answer. You can change the world. In her new book, “Is This Seat Taken? It’s Never Too Late to Find the Right Seat,” Kaufman tells the inspirational tales of 15 people who reinvented themselves and achieved success after enduring hardship, loss, and crisis. Plus, they did it all after turning 50.

The stories reveal the lives of authors, artists, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit founders, most of whom are household names. I was hooked from the first chapter, which revealed the early life of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the “Little House” books. I loved all of Wilder’s book when I was a child, so reading about her hard life and how she became a writer beloved by millions was truly fascinating. My other favorite chapter was about Ninfa Laurenzo, the woman who invented tacos al carbon – now known as the fajita – and in the process started one of Houston’s most popular Mexican restaurants, Ninfa’s.

Kaufman proves to the reader that grit, creativity, and faith can all pay off by telling us other life stories including those of Ray Kroc, Harland Sanders, Grandma Moses, Frank McCourt, and Bill Wilson (founder of AA), among others. I mention faith because the author definitely brings the power of spirituality and faith into the picture in enabling individuals to overcome hard luck, poverty, setbacks and tragedy. At the end of each chapter, Kaufman summarizes the key take-away points, “Alignment Lessons: Make It Real.” The reader can apply to the take-away points to his or her own life.

If you regret not wholeheartedly pursuing your most passionate interest and talent then you'll dive into this book of inspiring stories and practical advice of diverse individuals whose common characteristic is, as Kaufman discovered, that "their transformation came late in life.

The book's core and credible message? It's never too late or too difficult to start and surprise yourself and others about the remarkable thing you can accomplish.

These 15 colorful and inspiring stories of individuals as different as Harland Sanders, Laura Ingalls Wilder and Frank McCourt will pull you in, then the pithy "alignment lessons" at the end of each chapter give you actionable insights about how to adapt their success to your situation.

Ironically I shared this book with three millennials who are heading start-ups and they, too, felt spurred to overcome some immediate adversities and recognize the vital need to make wise choices about their use of time and opportunities. I highly recommend this book, for you and to share with others who are facing what feels like pivotal times in their lives, regardless of their age.

Inspiring, reassuring and great motivation!

I loved Kristin's first book and I love this one as well. The stories are just perfect to help me as I begin to think about my next act and motivate me to aim high! I did not read this book from front to back, but skipped around as stories caught my eye. I really appreciate the "Alignment Lessons: Make It Real" as a quick reinforcement/ reminders of key points. I will be giving this book as gifts for friends of a "certain age"/ birthday ending in 0/ and new college graduates. I think this life lessons are impactful at any age and life stage.

Excellent and quick read - fit perfect with my crazy schedule!

I had spent the better part of a year at a 3rd shift job in a factory on the far end of town, trying not to lose myself in the mullets and meth of the American Midwest. Then came 9/11. The images of those airplanes slamming into the NYC skyline like lawn darts playing on a constant loop on CNN. The attack had leant me a sense of purpose; I enlisted in the Army. But that wasn't it, there had been something more. Suddenly I remembered. It was the dune buggy. The video from the Army recruiting station had featured a couple of fearless, clean-cut GIs riding in a dune buggy. Come to find out, there weren't any dune buggies in Iraq. Your standard US Army bait-and-switch; join the Army, see the world. Just not any part you're gonna want to remember.

Dune buggy or not, here I was. As far from Ashtabula as I could get, squinting in the dust and that godforsaken insane-colored sun; you know you're not in Kansas anymore when the sun doesn't even look right. All of it seemed to be drawing together into some kind of destiny; and before I ever saw Ohio again, before I got the chance to comprehend the paradise that Ashtabula really had been, there was Iraq. There was an eternity of gunfire and explosions and heat and blood and steel. Iraq was hell, and that was exactly where I was going.

patriot. A sad but true story that many of our young military members went through. Well worth reading if you want to know what happened and is still happening today in the military.

I downloaded this book a few weeks ago, figuring I would read it between my courses and downtime at work. I finally got some down time and began reading. About six pages in, I realize this story seems very familiar, as if I had lived it myself. As I continued reading and remembering my own OIF 1 experiences, it dawned on me that I had served with this man. It is very sureal to read the events from another's perspective, and Ross' closure helped me with much of the same things he was feeling. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the true story of what and how many of America's soldiers felt and went through at that time. It is a great read and every bit verifiable.

Was the war in Iraq worth it?

A lucid first hand account of the sordid drama of the American invasion of Iraq by a soldier who was voluntarily a part of the of the whole exercise. Did the political leadership of US got completely wrong? They took upon themselves to impose self rule (democracy) in an area torn with inter cine tribal and religious strife for over a thousand years. They not only spoiled the political careers of the likes of Secretary of State, Colin Powell and the British PM Tony Blair, it spoiled the lives of large number of soldiers,theiir loved ones and a local population of an entire country. Unfortunately they would not be tried for their war crimes. A very engrossing read indeed.

Very informative book

I really liked this book. Mrs Perrini has managed to put a lot of information on less than 150 pages, that is stunning. A book I'd recommend to all interested in the criminal mind, behavior of children or just generally folks interested in the true crime genre

Great telling of a tragic story.

This is a short and straightforward version of events. It has a lot of the same info as the BBC special but has a few jaw droppers that I never would have guessed. It definitely makes me want to read "Cries Unheard" ( which I have on order).

About the Author
Author of a thriller, Nightfall in Mogadishu, Veronica Li grew up mostly in Hong Kong and moved to the U.S. with her parents at fifteen. She has a B.A. in English from University of California, Berkeley and a master's in International Affairs from Johns Hopkins University. Li was a journalist for seven years, working for the Asian Wall Street Journal and other news organizations. She later joined the World Bank, for which she traveled extensively and got her inspiration for her novel and other writings.

An extraordinary journey, an extraordinary woman

A book about a beautiful, determined, intelligent and well-educated Chinese woman, Flora Li, who overcomes all obstacles to ensure an education and a future for her children. She is focused and committed. She refuses to allow a difficult marriage, the frequent need to relocate her family, and the hardships of war stand in the way of her goals for her children. No matter what problems she encounters on her way, she can and will cope.

Her story is at times inspiring and at times harrowing, but there is humor here and the sometimes unexpected twist which surprises and delights. The language is lively and the story is full of cleverly-translated Chinese idioms that are colorful and exotic. The author has captured her mother's voice perfectly. By the end of the book, the reader knows Flora intimately, like a member of one's own family.

As a western reader, I was also fascinated by this glimpse into an unknown world -- that of women in China and the Far East in the decades before and after World War II. Highly recommended.

Deep, Intriguing Story

This book was very difficult to put down. It's a fascinating story with many interesting characters that places the reader in a former world that not many know about. The one thing that got to me was the fact that this is plain and simple, a true story. It has the potential to make one more appreciative of life, knowing some of the hardships that Flora confronted as a young woman.

Veronica Li surely has inherited her mother's gift of story telling. It made me feel like I was there in person to witness the events. This was a fascinating story of how one woman struggled and sacrificed for the betterment of her family. You will laugh and cry with Flora. You will learn about the customs and the way of life of Chinese people during World War II.

Do not read this book unless you have several hours to yourself. Once you have opened the book you will not want to put it down.

In the past five years Israel has mounted three major assaults on the 1.8 million Palestinians trapped behind its blockade of the Gaza Strip. Taken together, Operation Cast Lead (2008-9), Operation Pillar of Defense (2012), and Operation Protective Edge (2014), have resulted in the deaths of some 3,700 Palestinians. Meanwhile, a total of 90 Israelis were killed in the invasions.

On the face of it, this succession of vastly disproportionate attacks has often seemed frenzied and pathological. Senior Israeli politicians have not discouraged such perceptions, indeed they have actively encouraged them. After the 2008-9 assault Israel’s then-foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, boasted, “Israel demonstrated real hooliganism during the course of the recent operation, which I demanded.”

However, as Norman G. Finkelstein sets out in this concise, paradigm-shifting new book, a closer examination of Israel’s motives reveals a state whose repeated recourse to savage war is far from irrational. Rather, Israel’s attacks have been designed to sabotage the possibility of a compromise peace with the Palestinians, even on terms that are favorable to it.

Looking also at machinations around the 2009 UN sponsored Goldstone report and Turkey’s forlorn attempt to seek redress in the UN for the killing of its citizens in the 2010 attack on the Gaza freedom flotilla, Finkelstein documents how Israel has repeatedly eluded accountability for what are now widely recognized as war crimes.

Further, he shows that, though neither side can claim clear victory in these conflicts, the ensuing stalemate remains much more tolerable for Israelis than for the beleaguered citizens of Gaza. A strategy of mass non-violent protest might, he contends, hold more promise for a Palestinian victory than military resistance, however brave.

About the Author
Norman Finkelstein was born in New York City in 1954. He received his B.A. from Binghamton University and his Ph.D. from Emory University. He is a Professor of English at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he has lived since 1980. His books of poetry include Restless Messengers (Georgia, 1992), PASSING OVER (Marsh Hawk, 2007), and the three-volume serial poem Track: Track (Spuyten Duyvil, 1999), Columns (Spuyten Duyvil, 2002), and POWERS: TRACK VOLUME THREE (Spuyten Duyvil, 2005). He has also written extensively about modern and postmodern poetry, and about Jewish literature. His books of criticism include Not One of Them In Place: Modern Poetry and Jewish American Identity (SUNY, 2002) and Lyrical Interference: Essays on Poetics (Spuyten Duyvil, 2004). On Mt. Vision: Forms of the Sacred in Contemporary American Poetry will be published by the University of Iowa Press in 2010.

Detailed with Copious Notes, Yet Concise and Easy To Read

Ordered this directly from the publisher, OR Books. While Finkelstein has tackled Cast Lead in detail previously, this shorter book is a concise series of essays written over the years since Cast Lead up to the most recent IDF military operation in Gaza, Protective Edge. This is an excellent primer on the political and military trends that evolved since the 2006 Lebanon War. It's detailed enough to lay out the case with ample evidence, but short enough to be read casually within a couple days. Read the end notes, some of the most interesting content is hidden there. The best chapters are on the Mavi Mamara incident and the Goldstone recantation. Finkelstein uses the words of the various political leaders of Israel, extensive knowledge of international law, and human rights data to make a damning case.

Finkelstein tells it as it is

This book is a collection of essays about Gaza written by Norman Finkelstein in recent years. The book documents the manner in which the Israelis have engaged in on-going collective punishment of the people of Gaza and intentionally provoked confrontation with Hamas time and time again, often as a direct response to peace initiatives by Hamas leaders. The book cuts through the myths of the main-stream media of a belligerent Hamas and an Israel that sincerely wants peace as a hot knife cuts through butter. The book ends with a call by Finkelstein to Hamas leaders to focus their efforts on non-violent civil disobedience using Gaza's greatest asset - it's children and young people.

Thou shall not covet = the greed motivation

Norman Finkelstein produces yet again another expertly researched book and provides much insight into a well covered up story. I am surprised, however, that he misses the angle of the large natural gas reserves which were discovered off Gaza. An economic component consistently dovetails with Israel's vicious aggression to its neighbors. In Gaza there are massive gas fields off the Gazan coast which by international law belong to Gaza. Similarly in Lebanon, isn't it interesting that the initial pullback was to the Litani river which they began to redirect into Israel - increasing their water supply by over 40% and certainly a powerful merchant competitor was crushed.
