Theorist-at-Large: One Woman's Ambiguous Journey into Medical Cannabis, by Regina Nelson

Theorist-at-Large: One Woman’s Ambiguous Journey into Medical Cannabis, well, it’s a book about my academic journey… a journey of a lifetime. Like nothing—NOTHING--I ever expected! Each section of Theorist-at-Large discusses a semester term, briefly providing an introduction as to my life at the time and then a few chosen articles, or rather papers, I submitted as coursework that I hope are article worthy. As you will come to see, I had no idea the direction—the twists and turns—this journey would take me as I followed this ambiguous process in interdisciplinary education—from Texas, to New Mexico to California to Colorado with Medical Cannabis as my research topic. And, today, I still don’t know exactly where it will end or when I will find myself to no longer be “at-Large.” As the character Dexter, a Showtime serial killer I used as an example of ethics, during the same course I announced my intent to focus my research on marijuana, once stated, “Some experiences are so big…they change your DNA.” This isn’t my life’s story…but it’s a portion of my life that changed who I am (or woke me to who I am) and hope you will find interesting enough to read.

By William Cerf
I loved how the author introduces each chapter with a personal vignette using an autoethnographic approach to her own lived experience as a cannabis patient, researcher and advocate. She states the purpose of her work as follows: “Not to be a renowned Professor or become some kind of Advocate or Global Leader but to venture further as a lifelong Learner, helping others do the “same…and living life on my own terms while (hopefully) gaining a retirement plan” (Nelson 10 - 11)!

She reveals a great deal about her personal care of others and care for dealing with caring for those who are sick and unable to tolerate traditional allopathic remedies. She explores several theorists in the ethics of care, including Noddings, Gilligan, and Tronto. Regina Nelson is an interdisciplinary scholar who learned enough about the medical science behind the endo-cannibinoid system to be accepted as a speaker at a scientific conference. She very ably explained what she has learned and continues to learn about science to a lay audience in clear and cogent language. In addition she lays out the lessons learned from the political arena in the fight to make drugs more readily available in the battle against AIDS. Regina seems very comfortable moving outside of her academic comfort zone.

The author skillfully weaves several complex strands together into a consistent and holistic narrative regarding the stigmatization and marginalization of cannabis patients, arguing against the Eurocentric posture taken by those in opposition to the use of cannabis as medicine. The author tackles forfeiture policies and federal actions against providers licensed in accordance with State law.

Nelson demonstrates interdisciplinary thinking in augmenting conventional leadership with Integral Theory espoused by Ken Wilber. She very ably enters into scientific discourse regarding the enod-cannibinoid system as part of her argument to advocate for the declassification of cannabis from Schedule 1 to be more widely available for research, development and use in treatment by physicians and other healthcare practitioners while further buttressing her position by quoting from and citing an editorial by former President of the US, Jimmy Carter. Nelson further develops an integral frame for challenging Evidence Based Medicine (EBM).

I highly recommend this work to interdisciplinary educators and people considering furthering their formal education as interdisciplinary scholars. Indeed anyone who suffers, has family members and friends who suffer from pain, nausea, and incurable conditions needs this book as a source of inspiration and valuable information.

This is a very important and timely book. With the legislation of medical marijuana before state and federal governments, Regina Nelson very aptly tables fundamental human rights issues as regards our ability to make informed and free choices.
The flow between the formal papers and her personal experience make for an enjoyable and engaging read as well.

Review

In the history of the Christian faith among English-speaking peoples, it was William Tyndale's translation of the Bible that made of them a people of the Book. His life was poured out even to the point of death to achieve this goal, and every generation of believers needs to hear the story of his life and death afresh. And one of the best guides to his story and its lessons for our day is this new study by Steve Lawson. Highly recommended!

--Michael A.G. Haykin, Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Louisville, Kentucky

Much more than a biography, this thrilling chronicle quickens the Christian heart and stokes the fires of resolve to courageously defend and proclaim the truth. Dr. Lawson's diligent work on William Tyndale should be considered essential reading for every English-speaking believer, as it carefully unfolds the forgotten legacy of God's faithfulness in using one man, against all odds, to bring us the gospel in the English language.

--David Parsons Founder, Truth Remains Granada Hills, California

Few people reading the Bible in English today understand the debt they owe to the martyr William Tyndale. Even among those who know the name of the fountainhead of modern English Bible translation, few realize that Tyndale fervently stood for the doctrines of justification by faith alone and salvation by grace alone. This little gem of a book reveals Tyndale's labors for the truth, his sufferings for the truth, and his love for the truth. May God use Steven Lawson's book to cause such love to burn in many others.

--Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary Grand Rapids, Michigan

William Tyndale - Courage Under Fire!
By Dr. David Steele
American people have the right and the freedom to criticize military movements in a foreign theater. This kind of deplorable behavior makes freedom loving Americans cringe - for the freedom to criticize is actually secured and maintained by the very soldiers "under the gun" of critique. In like manner, Christians have become quite adept at either criticizing their theological heritage at worst or downplaying the importance of church history which subtly undermines the heroes of the Christian faith. This mind-numbing, soul-shrinking language that discounts the pillars of church history only strengthens the assertion that R.C. Sproul often makes: "We live in the most anti-intellectual period in all of church history."

Yet church history is making a comeback. Church history is rising from the ashes and is beginning to shine once again. The heroes of the Christian faith who have been sidelined are making their way back onto the field. Calvin, Luther, Edwards, Whitefield, Knox, and Spurgeon are returning to the collective consciousness of the church - especially in the younger generation. In my own Christian pilgrimage, I give most of the credit to R.C. Sproul for rattling the cage of my mind and shaping my hard heart in order to not only appreciate church history - but to actually love it!

Another important contributor to this resurgence in the study of church history is Steven Lawson. In 2007, he introduced the series entitled, A Long Line of Godly Men. The first volume, The Expository Genius of John Calvin introduced readers to the Genevan theologian and sought to "raise the bar for a new generation of expositors." Since that time, several new volumes have been released that survey the lives and ministries of Jonathan Edwards, Martin Luther, John Knox, C.H. Spurgeon, Isaac Watts, John Owen, and George Whitefield.

The newest installment in the series, The Daring Mission of William Tyndale summarizes the life of brave Brit, credited with the first English translation of the Bible.

Lawson presents the high points of Tyndale's life and guides readers on a step-by-step tour which culminates in the martyrdom of a courageous and godly man.

Tyndale's theological convictions are summarized in five monumental sections:

Radical Corruption
Sovereign Election
Particular Redemption
Irresistible Call
Preserving Grace
Lawson is quick to alert readers to the Calvinistic piety of Tyndale, a man who stood shoulder to shoulder with the other giants of the Christian faith.

The Daring Mission of William Tyndale is yet another gift to the church from the pen of Steven Lawson. Young and old will be challenged, emboldened and encouraged as they read about a man who lived what he preached and died for a worthy cause.

Highly recommended!

We need again Tyndale's
By Dave Jenkins
William Tyndale is a figure many Christians likely have never heard of. His influence is felt the world over today through his translation work on the Bible. The sixteenth century English Reformer William Tyndale was an author, theologian, and linguistic genius who longed to give his English countrymen the Scriptures in their own language. Part of the excellent Long Line of Godly Men Profile series, Dr. Lawson has written another excellent biography called The Daring Mission of William Tyndale.

England during the 16th century was in spiritual darkness. The Reformation caught fire on the European Continent, while the people of England suffered under spiritually ignorant and superstitious priests who read the Bible to them in Latin. The Reformer William Tyndale decided to do something about this an act that would label him a trader and translate the Bible into the common tongue. Tyndale worked on translating the Bible so as to give the average person the Bible. This act was considered heresy in his time. He spent twelve years of his life as a fugitive and wouldn’t give up on this mission, eventually giving his own life for the cause of spreading the Bible in the English language. Through his efforts Tyndale became the father of the Modern English language and birthed a legacy that lasts today.

Lawson’s book on Tyndale only has seven chapters. The first chapter details his life and studies. Chapter two outlines Tyndale's position on the doctrines of grace. The rest of the book explains the work Tyndale did in translating the Bible and the process he took.

While I’ve read about the work of the Reformation quite a lot and knew some about William Tyndale, Lawson did an excellent job helping me to understand who William Tyndale was, how the doctrines of grace drove his ministry, and the process he took to translate the Bible. If you’re wondering who William Tyndale is or you’re already familiar with him, I highly recommend this biography. This book lays out the life of William Tyndale in easy to understand and helpful ways that will help readers to grasp his significance today.

As Lawson says we need again Tyndale’s. “We want again Tyndale’s to tenaciously face the insurmountable obstacles before them and overcome them with zealous resolve for the glory of God. We need Tyndale’s who translate the Bible into the languages of forgotten people groups around the world. We need Tyndale’s to proclaim the gospel through the written page in the face of imminent danger. We need Tyndale’s who passionate love the Word of God to fill every pulpit, every seminary, every Sunday School class, every lectern” (165). Go pick up this biography on Tyndale and learn from his life. As you do you’ll once again be reminded of the necessity and power of God’s Word, and begin once again to develop a passion for God’s Word.

Highly recommended! I was blown away by this read. I wrote this a while ago but for some reason just found it in my drafts I really enjoyed this book.I found the cover, size, font and layout of the book appealing and conducive to enjoyable reading and studying.

A breath of fresh air, this book is Biblically-sound, clear, deep and yet easy to read! I think this book would make a good gift for a new Christian friend, and for anyone unused to reading books on doctrine or Christian living which are more than double the size. Additionally, this book would be great for a child to read. And lastly, although this book is addressed to a Christian, I do recommend it for anyone; it would therefore also be a good gift choice for your unsaved acquaintances as well.

It opens ones eyes to appreciate the Bible more! What a well written book! This short book should be a great inspiration to young preachers and missionaries everywhere to not abandon scripture and to continue to preach and teach the hard truths of the Bible

Born into eight very different families, the upbringing and fortunes of Queen Victoria's grandsons varied widely. Some died in childhood, some were killed in action, and others lived to see grandchildren of their own. There were heroes and villains, valiant soldiers and dissipated youths, but their lives were interconnected through the tiny Queen for whom their welfare and happiness was a constant preoccupation. As part of a wide, extended family, they lived through the halcyon days of the late nineteenth century European monarchies, witnessing the most spectacular and the most tragic events of the age.

Brilliantly Put Together
By History Buff
Rather than writing a series of separate biographies, I very much appreciated the way Christina Croft interwove the stories of the various grandsons by dividing the book into sections about their childhood, military service, marriages and fatherhood, and the aftermath of the death of Queen Victoria. It made for very interesting reading, and created a fuller picture of the era in which these princes and kings lived, as well as showing what they were like in private as well as in public. The First World War was made all the more tragic by the realization that none of Queen Victoria’s grandsons wanted it to happen, and yet several of them were blamed for the parts they played during the conflict. Their divided loyalties and the tensions within their families were quite heart-breaking really, and the author presented the facts in a very engaging manner which kept my interest from the first page of the book, until the very end.

Interesting Insights & New Information
By Elizabeth Alexandra
Having already read ‘Queen Victoria’s Granddaughters’ by the same author, I was delighted to see this new book and was not disappointed. Although, of course, there is a natural overlap between the granddaughters and the grandsons, this book provided lots of new information and was, again, a most enjoyable read. The author’s understanding of Kaiser Wilhelm was particularly interesting to me and helped me to see him in a different light; and I also enjoyed reading about some of the lesser-known grandsons, especially Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein. A really good read – highly recommended!

Christina Croft does an excellent job narrating the intertwining lives of Queen Victoria's grandsons. I found this a little easier to follow than the companion book, Queen Victoria's Granddaughters, perhaps because the men were more directly involved in the pivotal events of the late 19th and early 20th century.
There are some poignant childhood memories that have special significance in this royal biography - I particularly liked the story about Victoria's young grandchildren coming to visit Grandmama at Christmas, where they would "play" battles in the garden. Ironically, these same children would grow up to take sides in World War 1. There was also a brief moment at Victoria's funeral where there was a catastrophe with the horses pulling the carriage that held the coffin, which was saved by one grandson who quickly arranged for the naval carriage to pull the coffin. This has become a feature of royal processions. Through it all, the pervading tragedy of haemophilia keeps appearing in families, generation after generation across Europe.
The general family distrust of Victoria's eldest grandson, Kaiser Wilhelm II is well portrayed here, although Croft gives an interestingly objective and empathetic portrait, disputing some of the myths about Willie's cruel treatment of his mother. Croft also claims that Willie was actually eager to avoid war and especially "dreaded" a war between England and Germany. I'm not so sure about that argument, as at least one world leader must have been keen for World War I or it would never have happened.
The other profiles are equally good, although some of the minor characters are difficult to keep straight. It is so fascinating to see what a lottery of fate it was being a grandchild of Queen Victoria - you could be a respected monarch, or assassinated by revolutionaries; die in childhood or live until the 1980s (that was a granddaughter); marry one cousin and/or declare war on another.
This book must have been particularly cheap when I bought it because I expected it to be a quick read, but it was quite lengthy and detailed and extremely well researched. I loved reading it, and I am keen to read Queen Victoria's Granddaughters again. Recommended to anyone who is fascinated by Victoria's tangled legacy across Europe and in seeing how World War I started as a game in Grandmama's garden.

WOW!
By GF
I enjoyed this book literally from cover to cover! The cover photo of two climbers gazing on what they overcame drew me inside. The great variety of life stories is amazing. The author writes in a personal engaging and flowing style that is easily readable including well-placed quotes.
It's hard to pick favorites in this book,I liked them all. But the story of baseball star Josh Hamilton overcoming drug and alcohol addictions and then doing well was my top choice.
I also like the excellent sections at the end of each chapter including the "notable quotable, points to remember and take action and learn more".
These help me to summarize what I've read and apply it to my life.
This book is inspiring!

Mulamadhyamakakarika of Nagarjuna: The Philosophy of the Middle Way, by Nagarjuna

This is a completely new translation of Nagarjuna`s major work the Mulamadhyamakakarika, accompanied by a detailed annotation of each of the verses. The annotation identifies the metaphysical theories of the scholastics criticized by Nagarjuna, and traces the source material and the arguments utilized in his refutation back to the early discourses of the Buddha. The book shows that Nagarjuna`s ideas are neither original nor are they an advancement from the early Buddhist period. Nagarjuna is not a Mahayanist.

About the Author
David Kalupahana is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hawaii. .......most significant is the manner in which the author proceeded to examine the subtle and complex metaphysical issues that blinded the sarvastivadins and the Sautrantikas in a background in which speculative philosophy had reached a high watermark, both among the Buddhists and the traditional Indian philosophers. ....probed into almost every aspect of their speculations, whether relating to epistemology, ontology, moral philosophy, or philosophy of language. He linked disjointed concepts and dissolved the hardened and the solidified.

Bad printing

just a warning that this edition published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishers (Language: English
ISBN-10: 812080774X) is badly printed. Font is very small, page has little margin, and some pages have uneven ink. you may want to check the edition by State Univ of New York Pr instead (ISBN-10: 0887061494)

This is the ONLY English version of Nagarjuna's karika worth having. I have spent over two years just studying this work with Prof. Kalupahana's commentary. If you want to know what was the Enlightened One's teaching unadulterated by centuries of dispositions, this will lay that knowledge in your hands. A truly remarkable work.

A short synopsis of his career and life. I would've enjoyed more detail.
Interesting facts. I didn't realize he had more top ten hits then Michael Jackson or Madonna.

Phil Collins
By JBR
I gave this a five star rating because although brief, this book packs in a lot of information. Think of it as the Reader's Digest version. As a fan, I appreciate that Mr. Whitaker mentioned, but gave no credence, to the terrible criticism Mr. Collins has endured.

If you're looking for an in depth biography of Phil Collins, this is not you're book. However, if you want something that you can read in one sitting that is entertaining, you'll probably enjoy this.

Grant Under Fire: An Exposé of Generalship & Character in the American Civil War, by Joseph A. Rose

A groundbreaking book challenges Ulysses S. Grant's reputation as a military genius and reliable chronicler of the Civil War. Grant has a sterling reputation as an officer and gentleman, despite suffering the biggest surprise of the war, committing the worst official act of anti-Semitism on U.S. soil, and coming closest of all Union commanders to losing Washington. Defenders even rank his generalship above Robert E. Lee's, but to do so, they must ignore his simplistic, pugnacious strategies that led to a war of attrition, as well as amateurish tactics of impetuous frontal assaults, all along the line against fortified positions. He relied on favoritism to decide military matters, trashing personal enemies, elevating friends, and arranging battle plans to fit his prejudices. Rigorously based on primary sources, it resolves such controversies as his drunken partying with the enemy on boats out of Cairo, Illinois, blaming Lew Wallace for a slow march to Shiloh, pretending that he had a plan to pass Vicksburg all along, taking credit for the charge up Missionary Ridge, and leaving wounded men to suffer between the lines at Cold Harbor. It overturns old tales by detailing Grant's corruption in Cairo, occupation of Paducah under orders, blunders in the Delta, and non-triumphal exit from the Wilderness. Grant's Memoirs are shown to be unreliable. Brave in battle and persistent on campaign, Grant achieved victory at Fort Donelson and Vicksburg by hedging in an inert enemy commander against a river. Naval forces-whose impact in the war he minimized-played a crucial role at each. He also refused to acknowledge the services of Elihu Washburne, John Rawlins, Charles Dana, and Henry Halleck. Besides describing Grant's flawed generalship and character, Grant Under Fire helps redeem the reputations of Robert E. Lee, John McClernand, Gouverneur Warren, George Thomas, William Rosecrans, Don Carlos Buell, George Meade, and others from 150 years of untruthful attacks.

Review
Impressively researched, "Grant Under Fire" is an iconoclastic but exceptionally well documented contribution to our clearer and more in-depth understanding of the role Grant played in the American Civil War. Informed and informative, "Grant Under Fire" is a seminal work of exhaustive scholarship and a critically important contribution to personal, community, and academic library American Civil War reference collections and supplemental studies reading lists.--Midwest Book Review

From the Inside Flap
Grant Under Fire is a thought-provoking study of the generalship and strategy of U.S. Grant during the Civil War. Joseph A. Rose convincingly argues that a close study of the historical record refutes Grant's reputation as a military genius and common sense strategist. Rose writes with a vigorous style, and supports his thesis with impressive research and incisive analysis.--Robert I. Girardi, author of The Soldiers' General: Major General Gouverneur K. Warren and the Civil War

Ulysses S. Grant has a sterling reputation as an officer and a gentleman, despite his suffering the biggest surprise of the Civil War, committing the worst official act of anti-Semitism on United States soil, and coming closest of all U.S. commanders to losing Washington. Defenders even rank his generalship above Robert E. Lee's, but to do so, they must ignore his simplistic, pugnacious strategies that led to a war of attrition, as well as his amateurish tactics of impetuous frontal assaults, all along the line against fortified positions.

Grant Under Fire comprehensively dissects his military career. Rigorously based on a wealth of primary sources--many not cited before--it resolves such controversies as his drunken partying with the enemy on flag-of-truce boats out of Cairo, Illinois, dishonestly blaming Lew Wallace for the slow march to Shiloh, pretending that he had the plan to pass Vicksburg all along, taking credit for the charge up Missionary Ridge, and leaving wounded men to suffer and die between the lines at Cold Harbor. It overturns familiar tales, detailing Grant's corruption in Cairo, occupation of Paducah under orders, blunders in the Mississippi Delta, and the non-triumphal exit from the Wilderness. Grant's Personal Memoirs are shown to be essentially unreliable.

Personally brave in battle and persistent on campaign, Grant achieved victory at Fort Donelson and Vicksburg by hedging in an inert southern commander against a river. Naval forces--whose impact in the war he minimized--played a crucial role at each. He likewise refused to acknowledge his dependence on the services of Elihu Washburne, John A. Rawlins, Charles A. Dana, Henry Halleck, and many others for their part in his triumphs.

Usually ignored or glossed over by many partisan biographers, a lazy, disorganized, negligent, and unjust Ulysses Grant held grudges, played politics, over-indulged in alcohol, and managed public relations with his pet reporters. His lesser-known failings included stealing rival John McClernand's Mississippi expedition, allowing lessees of plantations to exploit newly freed slaves, keeping Black troops out of combat, perpetrating the worst insubordination by a General-in-Chief in lobbying for Andrew Johnson's impeachment, and abrogating treaties with Native Americans, which led to the Black Hills War. While president, Grant looked the other way as his crooked friends stole from the government.

Besides describing the flawed generalship and character of Grant and his protégés, such as William Tecumseh Sherman and Philip Sheridan, Grant Under Fire helps redeem the reputations of Robert E. Lee, John A. McClernand, Gouverneur Warren, George H. Thomas, William S. Rosecrans, Don Carlos Buell, Jacob Lauman, George G. Meade, and others from over 150 years of biased and untruthful attacks.

It is a must for any serious student of the Civil War.--Frank Varney, author of General Grant and the Rewriting of History: How the Destruction of General William S. Rosecrans Influenced Our Understanding of the Civil War

Excellent Job Using the Primary Sources
By Bryce A. Suderow
I am Bryce A. Suderow, author of "The Petersburg Campaign" a two volume history of the Siege of Petersburg that won the Douglas Southall Freeman Award in 2014 for best Civil War book of the year.

Since my expertise is the Siege of Petersburg, I'll address myself to Rose's section on that campaign.

I'm impressed by the thorough job Rose did in researching the correspondence volumes in the Official Records. By citing Grant's correspondence he demonstrates how again and again Grant threw together badly planned campaigns that were bound to fail. To my mind this proves that Grant was not a good battlefield general.

I'm also impressed by Rose's clarity and his restraint. Instead of sneering at Grant, he simply delivers the facts and lets them speak for thsmselves.

Grant Under Fire: An Exposé of Generalship & Character in the American Civil War
This book about U.S. Grant is important in the study of the American Civil War because it details the shortcomings of the General not only in his handling of the war, but especially in his conduct as an officer and a gentleman. Ever since the creation of West Point for the training of a professional officer corps, it had been drilled into each officer that the only path to advancement other than the normal path of seniority, was outstanding performance on the battlefield. This required that senior officers give an honest evaluation of the performance of subordinate officers in their reports such that the best officers could be rewarded. It was a point of honor that these reports would be scrupulously fair and unbiased. It was important that the best officers bubble up quickly not only to win battles and the war but to protect the fighting men from incompetent officers.

For the first time the details of Grant's decisions and deceptions are shown with footnoted clarity. The 'tactics' he employed in his climb to the top command of the Army was a far cry from the principles taught at West Point.

He ruined the careers of several good officers by scapegoating his mistakes on them. He requested promotions for undeserving cronies into senior positions and derailed the careers of rivals he feared. It may never be known how many union soldiers died because of such decisions.

General Grant will always be known as the general who led the Union to victory, but as historian Stephen Z. Starr has stated, “...as a commander of armies, and above all, as a human being, Grant had shortcomings so fundamental as to negate his right to occupy the very high place his modern-day admirers have sought to award to him.”

This book will help the whole truth of the American Civil War come to light.

An exhaustively detailed indictment of Ulysses S. Grant
By Zachary
This book is centered around the argument that General Ulysses Grant was not the great general and man that many other historical works have made him out to be. In this volume of close to 800 pages, Mr. Rose makes that argument with a mountain of research that details countless examples of Grant's faults, mistakes, blunders, misrepresentations and even venality.

Mr. Rose goes after his subject with relentless precision while covering all of Grant's major campaigns and battles. What emerges is a Grant that is nothing like the conquering hero of historical myth, but a fallible and terribly flawed man whose achievements and capabilities are questioned at every turn.

I am a history aficionado, but have no compelling interest in the Civil War and little background as to Grant's qualities as a commander. Consequently, I have no "dog in the fight" as to the fairness of Mr. Rose's depiction of Grant. Still, GRANT UNDER FIRE is impressive in its scope and comprehensiveness, and provides meticulous detail for those who wish to venture into the depths of research on this American icon. This is not light, fast reading, with breezy overviews; rather, it takes a more scholarly approach, with straightforward elucidation of the events of Grant's career. Hence, the book seems perfect for hardcore Civil War buffs and historians who might have some of their cherished ideas of Grant thrown into disarray. Is Grant a hero and a military genius, or a mediocre soldier and a man with feet of clay? Before you decide, you may want to read this book.
