An OK read

I doubt this book would be interesting to anyone but a local of Summersville or Nicholas County. I have heard stories around town that leave me wondering how much was left out of this account.

Questionable view by one person.

Ok this book had some interesting history. I did grew up in the area and I totally did not see Summersville WV the way the author portrayed the people and area. To me the people were not out to see what they could do to you. I felt there were caring people. Everyone has their own option. That is what is great. But to me I saw this area totally different.I did know many people that were mentioned in the book but I was disappointed to be honest. There were many people that made Summersville what it was and not just one mayor. I would say there is more to this story that was left out and not accounted for as some have mentioned. This is one side of the story.

Prolific author Michael Newton has trotted out another must for the bookshelf - a book dedicated to the 'dark side' of Bigfoot.
Written in an engaging style, Newton has offered up the kinds of stories you don't usually hear about Bigfoot and his hairy counterparts - man-eaters, wife-stealers, fierce forest-dwelling cannibal giants to be avoided at all costs, not pursued by the curious and unwary.
Forget Harry and the Hendersons - this is pure creature feature!

Pretty good overview of possible threats by our Hairy Cousins

This book delves into the dark side of the hunt for Hairy Hominids (or Hominoids if you like) by describing several alleged incidents of violence against humans by Sasquatch and related creatures around the world. The more famous cases are profiled, such as the Headless Valley incidents, the Ape Canyon shooting and the Bauman account, along with the infamous attack on Bobby Ford in Fouke, Arkansas in 1971. But there are also lesser- known accounts, from the U.S. to Asia, from Australia to the Himalayas, from Borneo to Russia. Really interesting subject matter, which Newton for the most part believes is unsubstantiated. Newton is simply analyzing these accounts as we all would, with a skeptical but open attitude. His writing style is comfortable and easy to follow as well. I do recommend this one.

Pitifully thin book compiles list of the same old alleged attacks we've read about before, (many highly suspect). But then what?

Skimpy chronicle of alleged Bigfoot attacks. No solid conclusions are able to be reached when you've finished it and not much in the way of extensive research to even warrant printing this thing. The book simply compiles what the author states are all currently known (by him, at least) incidents involving attacks by hairy bipedal creatures but many of these have ZERO supportive evidence of any kind and even worse, several are from a well-known hoaxer in the Bigfoot community. These weaknesses in the said evidence are acknowledged by Mr. Newton but he defends their inclusion, stating that all accounts are collected for the sake of completeness. The book was a very dry, boring read. Only a couple of stories were of ANY interest whatsoever. I blew through this short (less than 140 total pages of actual printed "data") in a couple of brief sittings. Nothing much here, certainly not for a hardcore BF researcher nor anyone looking to add fully documented evidence to their Bigfoot lore. Many of the best stories are ones we've seen reported elsewhere (often many times before) and in much greater detail. Some may like it, I did not care for it. It's not the worst Bigfoot-related book I've read but I've read many that were much, much better. Of interest only to those BF fans with a taste for the morbid side of our hairy cousins.

A Sane Inquiry into Anarchism

Paul Eltzbacher (1868-1928)was a conservervative German judge and productive legal scholar who wrote ANARCHISM in 1900. This is a surprisingly honest book re anarchism/mutualism. This book was first published in Berlin in 1900 after the assassination of Czar Alexander II(1881) and after the Haymarket Tragedy (1886). Both violent events were attributed to anarchists, but the men and women involved were not adherents to anarchism. They wanted violent revolution which they thought would usher a new state which would in turn create an ideal society. None of the anarchists wanted any new state solution, and few wanted to employ violence. Eltzbacher is clear about this. The book was quickly popular in Europe and these United States. In 1907, Benjamin Tucker (1854-1939)issued an English translation in 1907 via his Libertarian Book Club. Steven Byington(1868-1957) provided an excellent translation from what one reviewer called "unyielding German."

Eltzbacher gives a good description of the complaints of anarchists of various opinions re the problems in industrialzed Europe and the U.S. The concentration of wealth into the hands of plutocrats in turn corrupted the political and legal systems both in the US and Europe which was readily admitted by Eltzbacher. In other words, the dissent and protests of the libertarian/anarchists were not idle complaints, and Eltzbacher, a conservative German judge and legal scholar, readily admitted this.

Eltzbacher began this study with a summary of William Godwin's (1756-1836)book titled AN ENQUIREY INTO JUSCICE. Eltzbacher cites Godwin's severe criticism of the British elite and class system which obviously drew the attention of British authorities. Yet, Godwin's criticism was so accurate that William Pitt the Younger (1959-1806)admitted in private that Godwin's dissent was true and something that he (William Pitt)did not want to be a popular notion in Great Britain.

Eltzbscher continued this study with a good section on Proudhon (1809-1865). Eltzbacher knew Proudhon's books and ideas surprisingly well. Eltzbacher also showed a clear understanding of Proudhon's comment that "Property is theft." Eltzbacher explained that Proudhon was not against property ownership but that Proudhon cited examples of how a few weathly men used government power to confiscate land and property. Eltzbacher also showed keen understanding of Proudhon's "People's Bank." Eltzbacher explained Proudhon's concept of circulating credit divorced from France's central banking system which enhanced the weathly at the expense of the poor.

Eltzbacher's next section dealt with Bakunin's (1814-1864)views re anarchism. Bakunin was certainly no friend of the Russian Czars and Russian nobility. He often preached of the corruption, stupid cruelty, etc. of the Russian political system. His solution was the Russians peasants should be alerted to their servile conditions and rebel. Bakunin thought that the only obligations on Russians were the obligations of contract. Bakunin thought that in time Russian Czarist military expansion would become so expensive that no Russian could afford all this "glory" which would undermine the Russian political "system." Bakunin thought that the Russians would then organize into voluntary communal societies where trade and soical organization would replace the corrupt system.

Eltzbacher had an interesting section on Kropotkin (1842-1921)who was a member of Russian nobility. Kropotkin was in the Russian army and eventually became an expert on Russian and European geography. Kropotkin held similar views as those of Bakunin. Kropitkin thought that the Russians should organize into voluntary communal societies and again divorced from central authority. Kropotkin commented that the Russians Czars could get Russian men maimed and killed in war but could not afford simple medical care for these men.

Eltzbacher was even familar with U.S. libertarian thinkers. He had a good chapter on Benjamin Tucker, mentioned above, and Tucker's associates. Eltzbacher showed he had read Tucker's work including Tucker's book titled INSTEAD OF A BOOK BY A MAN TOO BUSY TO WRITE ONE. Eltzbacher accurately described Tucker's concept the four monopolies (the money monopoly, land monopoly, patent monopoly, and the tariff monopoly). Eltzbacher was German, but he was surprislingly aware of Tucker. Eltzbacher was well aware that Tucker was no idealist. Eltzbacher quoted Tucker in that the latter was in favor of the death penalty in certain cases. Tucker did not see legal sanctions as caprice. Tucker argued that imprisonment for home invaders, looters, etc. was a means of protection of peaceful individuals. Tucker was in favor of the death penalty in cases of murder, and this was due to defense against those who wantonly take life rather than an act of vengence.

This reviewer was surprised that Eltzbacher included Leo Tolstoy (1844-1930). Tolstoy argued that men and women could be organized under some utopian Christian format which was beyond any practical consideration. The leading anarchist/libertarian thinkers were not religious. However, they did believe in freedom of religion. The inclusion of Tolstoy was out of place in this book.

Eltzbacher had a good conclusion. He described how the leading expositors of anarchism/libertarianism had differences among themselves. He also clear that they loathed plans for Big Communism. The book concludes with an extended essay by Rudolf Rocker who was a later German anarchist/libertarian.

The criticisms of this book are well documented by Byington who wrote the translator's preface. Byington was not critical of Eltzbacher's critisims of libertarian/anarchism which Eltzbacher thought as too optimistic and too impractical. Byington's criticism was that Eltzbacher was too arrogant in claiming to have covered the entire topic of the history and ideas of anarchists. Byington knew better and said so in his introductory essay.

This book has merit because of its honest appraisal of libertarianism/anacrhism at a time when anarchism was a political disapproval word. As an aside, readers should note that Mr. Fritz Ward, Ph.D. is better qualified to write a review of this book than the undersigned. For those not familar with the sources of libertarianism/anarchism, this book is good introduction to the topic.

He reveals his and many young soldiers' exciting and often humorous escapades at Greifenberg, his first love with a German girl helping refugees, his experiences and feelings during the combats at Körlin, during the strenuous defense of Kolberg, while regrouping at Neustrelitz and at the German defeat. With a companion he ends up at a castle delivering a group of women camp prisoners to a Russian officer, living in disguise among enemy soldiers until he escapes and surrender to the Americans.

After his sentence, imprisonment, evasions and military service in Morocco, Paul is sent to fight in defense of bases north of Hanoi, Vietnam. He survives three years of fierce combats, assaults, ambushes, night patrols, fatal traps and mortal risks but, deep down, he compares his service with the Waffen SS during the last year of war with the inefficiency of the French Expeditionary Force in the Far East and comes out deeply frustrated. At almost 26, he has fought and lost in two wars, both against the communists, be they Soviet or Viet-Minh. Unemployed, and with the ideals of a 'Nouvelle Europe' in pieces, he briefly joins the French Foreign Legion, his last hope, but in the end choses another path.

This is a unique memoir, packed with incident and recounting the story of one individual caught up in a series of life-changing events.

About the Author
Vittorino dal Cengio wrote several books about climbing in the Dolomites that were published during the 1980s. He also wrote articles and short stories for a magazine and for Italian newspapers in Canada. After an interlude in 2008 he resumed writing books, this time about social history, authoring three in recent years. He moved to Canada in 1977 in the spirit of adventure after his military service with the Italian Alpine Corps. He holds various technical diplomas from Italy and a BA (joint major in French, History, Political Sciences) from Simon Fraser University.

Interesting story but with too much detail about minor events

Interesting story and he address serial issues I had not seen in print before. I will not give it 5 stars because his escapes at the end of the war do not ring true, and I think there is more to it than he put in print. I served in both the eastern front with the Waffen SS and then with the French in Indochina. His stories of the incompetence of the French makes it clear why they lost Indochina. It you purchase the book be prepared for lots of praise for the Waffen SS and it officers. His service with the SS at the end of the second world war is more about serviving the retreat into German by the German forces and actions of the Red Army. I would have liked a final chapter on what happen to the author after his service with the French.

A complicated history

All men run to or from something in their lives. Paul Martelli was one of those men who chose conflict as his path in life. Probably because his conflict resolution skills were both marketable and because he was very good at waging war.

I found this book fascinating for several reasons. First it is only one of three books I am aware of written by men who were French who joined the German army in World War Two. Second, and most importantly, the book details the destruction of the SS Charlemagne Division in Pomerania.

The book is rich in details and is quite verifiable in many was as authentic. It is an easy and quick read and stays away from a complicated structure on its way to telling the story. In fact the story is rather visceral in some places. It is truly hard to imagine people making these choices expect for the fact that two competing ideologies seeking the minds of the youth.

In this respect the book is harsh. But so is reality. Many of Martinelli’s fellow soldiers were tried and delivered to the firing squad in record time regardless of age. Of the roughly 5,000 members of the SS Charlemagne most of them rest in foreign fields.

The book is simply a historical jewel. The author is unapologetic and seeks no mercy for his action. He is blunt in regards to his service for both France and Germany. It is interesting to note that he did not choose the Legion as a final option and a change of name and personal history.

If you enjoyed this book I would suggest reading Captive Dreamer by Christian De La Maziere and the epic The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. Both books were written by Frenchmen whose service was with Germany.

although I suspect the natural audience for a book like this would be intuitively nimble

This is a short (125 pages) introduction to the breadth of the literature, lore, and influence of the grail. As such, it does not go into depth about any one aspect, but rather describes many different dimensions of the subject. The book is loaded with intuitive leaps that some readers may have trouble making along with the author, although I suspect the natural audience for a book like this would be intuitively nimble. Strong shows the grail-related interconnections of myth, theology, history, and science, bounding from Jewish and Christian writings to psychology and dream analysis, from Celtic spirituality to astrophysics, and from King Arthur to Nazi mysticism. And that's only a partial list. Strong's approach to SUN GOD AND MOON MAIDEN is scholarly rather than sensational, as some other volumes on this subject have been. For those who want more, there is a bibliography with plenty of leads for more in-depth reading.

You have to read this book!

I am Matthew should make you stop and think. As I was selecting my star rating I found it ironic that 5 stars is "I loved it", I did not love reading the pain that my friend has gone through, what I do love is this world is blessed that Matt is still alive and sharing his story. I grew up with Matthew like many we go to school and after graduation everyone moves on. You hear what people are up to or where they are “at”. Heard Matt had been in the service, married/children, living in WA then in CA. Not once had I heard that Matt was homeless let alone the struggles he was faced with every day. This book is just one man’s story of survival. I implore you to read this book, I promise it will change the way you think about the homeless and the way you treat people in general. Matthew, thank you for your service and welcome back!

Compelling book

This book is described as "raw and compelling." After finishing it in one night, those are the same descriptors I'd use. It's honest and hard to read at times, which makes it all the more important. I have more questions, now, than answers on how to help the Matthews of the world, but one thing is clear from reading this book... avoid assumptions about people you see in a homeless situation, and never give up on another human being. This book is also an eye-opener on cross-agency communication improvements that are needed amongst already established entities that purport to help veterans and others in need.

A close up look at a side of life most of us can't even comprehend

Definitely a must read. Matthew gives a close up look at a very dark side of life most of us cannot even comprehend. He is honest and forthcoming giving what must be embarrassing detail. His intelligence and moral compass combine to see him through. This is a compelling and irresistible read that is impossible to put down. I would require every high school student to read it.
