You have to read this book!
By Bobbi Hannon
I am Matthew should make you stop and think. As I was selecting my star rating I found it ironic that 5 stars is "I loved it", I did not love reading the pain that my friend has gone through, what I do love is this world is blessed that Matt is still alive and sharing his story. I grew up with Matthew like many we go to school and after graduation everyone moves on. You hear what people are up to or where they are “at”. Heard Matt had been in the service, married/children, living in WA then in CA. Not once had I heard that Matt was homeless let alone the struggles he was faced with every day. This book is just one man’s story of survival. I implore you to read this book, I promise it will change the way you think about the homeless and the way you treat people in general. Matthew, thank you for your service and welcome back!

Compelling book
By ***
This book is described as "raw and compelling." After finishing it in one night, those are the same descriptors I'd use. It's honest and hard to read at times, which makes it all the more important. I have more questions, now, than answers on how to help the Matthews of the world, but one thing is clear from reading this book... avoid assumptions about people you see in a homeless situation, and never give up on another human being. This book is also an eye-opener on cross-agency communication improvements that are needed amongst already established entities that purport to help veterans and others in need.

A close up look at a side of life most of us can't even comprehend
By Bob Andrews
Definitely a must read. Matthew gives a close up look at a very dark side of life most of us cannot even comprehend. He is honest and forthcoming giving what must be embarrassing detail. His intelligence and moral compass combine to see him through. This is a compelling and irresistible read that is impossible to put down. I would require every high school student to read it.

Machine Made: Tammany Hall and the Creation of Modern American Politics, by Terry Golway

A major, surprising new history of New York's most famous political machine - Tammany Hall - revealing, beyond the vice and corruption, a birthplace of progressive urban politics.

For decades, history has considered Tammany Hall, New York's famous political machine, shorthand for the worst of urban politics: graft, crime, and patronage personified by notoriously corrupt characters. Infamous crooks like William "Boss" Tweed dominate traditional histories of Tammany, distorting our understanding of a critical chapter of American political history.

In Machine Made, historian and New York City journalist Terry Golway convincingly dismantles these stereotypes; Tammany's corruption was real, but so was its heretofore forgotten role in protecting marginalized and maligned immigrants in desperate need of a political voice. Irish immigrants arriving in New York during the 19th century faced an unrelenting onslaught of hyperbolic, nativist propaganda. They were voiceless in a city that proved, time and again, that real power remained in the hands of the mercantile elite, not with a crush of ragged newcomers flooding its streets. Haunted by fresh memories of the horrific Irish potato famine in the old country, Irish immigrants had already learned an indelible lesson about the dire consequences of political helplessness. Tammany Hall emerged as a distinct force to support the city's Catholic newcomers, courting their votes while acting as a powerful intermediary between them and the Anglo-Saxon Protestant ruling class.

In a city that had yet to develop the social services we now expect, Tammany often functioned as a rudimentary public welfare system and a champion of crucial social reforms benefiting its constituency, including workers' compensation, prohibitions against child labor, and public pensions for widows with children. Tammany figures also fought against attempts to limit immigration and to strip the poor of the only power they had - the vote.

Immigration...
By NYFB
Between 1845 to 1855, out of 8 million Irish, 2 million left Ireland during famine. Majority of those Irish immigrants who migrated to US did not speak English and were not treated with respect back in Ireland either. Tammany embraced these immigrants while the opposition party considered them not worthy of US Citizenship. What democrats did then with success is the same as what they have been attempting to do in regard to immigration at the current times without any success, offering recognition to immigrants in hope of votes. This is a great book if you like politics since you get to experience politics and corruption among many other activities in a much bigger scale with few shady characters. There are other writings about Tammany as well but regardless Tammany was a big era of US politics and entertaining to read about even after some 150 years later only if presented well which this writer has done successfully.

A different perspective on Tammany Hall.
By SInohey
"The benefits that Tammany Hall brought to New York and to the United States outweigh the corruption with which it is associated.", according to Terry Golay who gives a more sympathetic view of the political machine of the Democratic Party in New York.
The book explains the origins of the organization in the late eighteenth century, "The Society of Saint Tammany" by Aaron Burr et al. and how it evolved into the controlling cabal of New York city politics for over a century. It was supposedly named after Chief Tamanend, William Penn's friend. He was suggested as a candidate for sainthood for his efforts to promote peace and friendship between the settlers and the natives, and is often referred to as the "Patron Saint of America"; but he was never beatified/canonized by the Catholic Church.

Tammany Hall was ruled by a succession of opportunistic, self-serving corrupt politicians such as the legendary William "Boss"Tweed (1823 -1878) who sold city contracts and patronage jobs and "enormous rents the city was paying for facilities linked to Tweed and his friends -- including a portion to Tammany Hall." and extracted a 15% "overcharge/tax" from businessmen plying their trade. The Times gave details of corruption "which even Tweed's harshest critics could not have imagined."
He was estimated to have amassed $25 to 45 million by the time of his arrest, now believed to be almost $200 millions. He died in prison at age 55 years.
Richard Croker, Sr (1843-1922) was born in Ireland and came to New York as a child. An ambitious hard working lad, he got himself an education and a city job. Eventually Croker became part of Tammany Hall and ended up running the "Machine" for several years. He built a fortune from the regular bribes he extracted from the vice industry; brothels, gambling houses, opium dens and saloons. Croker successfully blunted C.H.Parkhurst's assaults on the "Machine" corruption and was instrumental in Van Wyck's election.
Robert Anderson Van Wyck, (1849 -1918), a member of Tammany Hall, was the first mayor of New York City after the consolidation of the five boroughs into the City of Greater New York in 1898. In 1900, he was caught in the "Ice Trust scandal" and run out of office. He fled to Paris, where he died in 1918.
George Washington Plunkitt(1842-1924) a member of the Tammany Hall machine, served in both Houses of the State Legislature and became wealthy by practicing what he called "honest graft" in politics - what today is known as "machine politics," patronage-based and frank in its exercise of power for personal gain. According to Plunkitt, "the difference between dishonest and honest graft: for dishonest graft one worked solely for one's own interests, while for honest graft one pursued the interests of one's party, one's state, and one's personal interests all together." Plunkitt added, "it's the promise of a job that turned ordinary citizens into patriots."

The mass migration to the USA of the Irish - fleeing the disastrous calamity of the "Potato Famine" in the mid 19th century - followed by other ethnic groups, proved to be a gift to politicos of the time.
The main opposition Whig Party "considered these immigrants as aliens and interlopers, because as Catholics they could never understand the Anglo-Protestant idea of liberty". Protestant charity organizations equated poverty with character deficits; drunkenness, larceny, laziness and slovenliness etc. and "the poor who applied for aid were subjected to investigation to determine whether they were morally fit." The Democrats were quick to seize on the opportunity to support these destitute, unskilled and uneducated immigrants who they hoped would become voters favoring the Democrats. And it worked!

The local print media's message was against it; it was anti-Tammany, anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant. "But the accusations of political and moral corruption," Golway writes, "were often linked to a profound bigotry rooted in a trans-Atlantic, Anglo-Protestant analysis of Irish character defects, not least of them being their stubborn adhesion to the venal institution known as the Roman Catholic Church."
Poor Italian, Jewish and East European immigrants were also viewed with suspicious disdain. Andrew White, president of Cornell University, represented the prevailing sentiment of the time, "The problem with New York is that it is being ruled by peasants who were freshly raked from the Irish bogs and from Italian robber nests and Bohemian coal mines ...". Bigotry was also displayed in famed Thomas Nast's cartoons "that depicted the Irish as apes, as ignorant, drunken violent thugs" or being crushed underfoot by Columbia with the caption "Bravo", to commemorate the killing of 26 Irish Catholics by the National Guard, during a demonstration. Nasts' defamatory caricatures helped destroy "Boss" Tweed's political career.

If Tweed, Croker and Van Wyck are monuments of Tammany Hall's corruption, Golway counters with,"Tammany Hall supported the writing of a new social contract in New York, one that served as a model for a more aggressive role for government in 20th-century American society." The Bosses of Tammany Hall were also social reformers, improving working conditions, and providing jobs for the poor. The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire was the impetus to enact and enforce their progressive laws.
Men like Alfred "Al" Smith (four times governor of New York State and candidate for President) Tom Foley, Charles Francis Murphy, Senators Robert F. Wagner and Herbert Lehman were at the forefront of the progressive movement and the genesis of Roosevelt's New Deal.
Golway extolls "Silent Charlie" Murphy's role in transforming New York politics, as a progressive social catalyst, his support for reformers Al Smith and Robert Wagner, and redeeming Tammany Hall (which he ran from 1902 until 1924), image and reputation after the Triangle Shirtwaist factory disaster in Greenwich village in 1911.

Golway has given a fair assessment of Tammany Hall. He lays out its widely known reputation of greed, avaricious corruption and political machinations but also emphasizes its role in charity, support for the disenfranchised and poor of New York City and its germinal role in national progressive social reforms.

By the end of the book I was left with the notion that the venal corruption, kleptocracy and rapacity of the denizens of Tammany Hall was balanced by their provision of support to the poor and needy; the Robin Hood principle?
I believe that, same as now, they were simply buying votes.

A great book: as much about Tammany, as about America and New York
By Alastair MacAndrew
I have just finished Reading this very interesting book, and congratulate T. Golway for producing a highly readable and well-documented history , and also helping clear up the origins and evolution of an institution looked down upon by many. Having landed as an Irish immigrant myself in New York in the 70s, I identified with the characters portrayed in the book and it gave me great insight into the history of my forefather's journey to that great city in the previous century. New York has always been special for the irish; as former president McAleese said: "it was the next parish".
Golway describes only too well what it meant to be a second-class citizen in the Anglo-Protestant world from which these immigrants came, and how that experience contributed to their desire to exercise to the full in their new home, the rights which they had been denied in their native land, above all that of political power. This was even more so as they confronted the same anti-Catholic Anglo-Protestant bigotry in the New York to which they arrived. ( The author describes this last aspect very well, and above all, the very Calvinist view these NY elders had of poverty, its causes and remedies ) Golway points out the manner in which these impoverished immigrants took over the Society of St Tammany and the seat of the Democratic Party in Manhattan, and the breadth and depth of political structure and organization they set up, in the days before mass media, polling,TV debates and the like. No other i group achieved anything close to it, and Malcom X, in the days before the Civil Rights legislation, lamented that if only the black people had something like Tammany, their story in America would have been very different. The author acknowledges the corruption and patronage which accompanied this, especially during the leadership of Wm. Tweed. Another historian mentions that during his reign about 300 million dlls was "misappropriated", or 3.7 billion in current terms. Although this was an essential part of the machine.style politics of that era, and especially of Tammany, Golway goes on to show that it was balanced by the organization's huge informal network of care for the needy and jobless and later on, its contribution to effectively implementing, through its control of the state Assembly, and city government, the first laws in the US for social security, worker safety, and social welfate. These served, according to Golway, as precursors of the New Deal legislation, enacted later by President Roosevelt, himself supported and to an extent, inspired, during most of his career by Tammany. The author documents well the gradual evolution of Tammany during the first three decades of the last century to become more inclusive ( incorporating East European Jews ) and, under the leadership of Charles Murphy, to promote the social causes mentioned. He quotes Senator Robert Wagner as saying that Tammany had been the founder of modern liberallism in the US, and this seems to be the basic thesis of the whole book.
The last chapters trace the final years of the organization and attributes its demise to changing demographics and Tammany's incapacity to incorpórate new ideas and approaches more in line with evolving trends in the thirties and forties. Forello La Guardia was instrumental in pushing Tammany and its methods aside, but the previous factors and poor leadership precipitated its eventual downfall. ( It is interesting to observe that, according to many, the expansión and reform of the city undertaken by Tammany's nemesis, La Guardia, probably led to its bankruptcy in 1975 ).
This is a book about a powerful political organization which, while fundamentally flawed, achieved a lot for its constituents and made a significant contribution to modern American politics, and which deserves a better place than history has given it. But I also found it to be a book about a great country, and above all, a great city: New York. The late English art historian Sir Kenneth Clark described New York as "heroic", not only because of its dizzying verticality, but perhaps also its sheer capacity to take on practically anything the world can throw at it: from millions of downtrodden immigrants with nowhere to go, to the greediest industrialists and financiers ( with which most identify it ), a pot-pourri of nationalities and even the most eccentric of politicians, not only the ones from Tammany.

Our time is really motion through extra-dimentional space...
By OAKSHAMAN
This is one of those great Books that has suffered because of a lack of readership capable of comprehending it. If one has the left brain traits necessary to grasp the transfinite logic and mathematics, then the mystical implications are ungraspable. And if you have the right brain intuition to understand the mystical implications, then you often struggle with the logic and mathematics. This book requires a reader with not only a first rate mind, but also a balanced one.
To briefly abstract the primary thesis: time is really motion in extra dimensional space. This is profound, for Ospensky was the first to actually point towards where an actual, physical fourth dimension can be found. Our brains confuse this dimension with time. It can be split off from time with an adjustment, or evolution, of consciousness. You see, this represents the next huge leap in understanding the nature of the universe and reality. Just as Newton's undefined quantity of "gravity" was shown to actually be curved space, so does Ouspensky show Einstein's undefined quantity of "time" to be motion through higher physical dimensions.
If you want a book that will challenge you, this is it. One day these ideas are going to shake the very foundations of mainstream science, of mankind's collective view of "reality"....

I enjoy reading Ouspensky's books when I want something intellectual about the metaphysical. He came up with some very interesting ideas. The end of this book was hard to get through, felt like it got off track (for me). But those who are interested in expanding their horizons can always get something from him. Not light reading.

From Publishers Weekly
Finkelstein, a political science professor and author of The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering, has conducted a rancorous public feud with Harvard Law professor and pro-Israel stalwart Alan Dershowitz over the latter's The Case for Israel, and here expands his arguments into a vigorous polemic on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The first part of the book examines what he feels is a growing tendency of pro-Israel commentators to use spurious charges of anti-Semitism to deflect and discredit legitimate criticism of Israel. The second, much longer, part is a line-by-line debunking of The Case for Israel, which he compares to Communist apologetics for Stalinist Russia. Rebutting Dershowitz's claims about Israel's "superb" human rights record, Finkelstein cites human rights organizations like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Israeli group B'Tselem to document Israeli abuses in the occupied territories, including killings of Palestinian civilians, torture of Palestinian prisoners and home demolitions. Lengthy appendices flesh out his explosive assertion that Dershowitz plagiarized the historical research and interpretations (but not the actual phrasing) of Joan Peters's From Time Immemorial. The Middle East conflict rarely inspires calm discussion, and Finkelstein duly pillories his opponents as perpetrators of "hoax" and "fraud" who lack "ordinary moral values" and whose behavior resembles anti-Semitic stereotypes. Inflammatory rhetoric aside, he does raise serious questions about the veracity, scholarly methods and fairness of Dershowitz and others. More important, he presents a wealth of evidence on the human rights situation in the occupied territories, so often ignored in American debate on these issues. Exhaustively researched and meticulously-if intemperately-argued, Finkelstein's book is a formidable challenge to the conventional wisdom on the Middle East. Photos.

From Booklist
Supporters of this book will not include Alan Dershowitz, author of The Case for Israel (2003). Very little of Dershowitz's widely acclaimed defense of Israel's occupation policies escapes Finkelstein's withering scrutiny. Behind Dershowitz's firm assurances that Israel is dealing with its adversaries justly and humanely, Finkelstein discerns ugly realities, including brutal torture of Palestinian prisoners and lethal disregard for Palestinian children and noncombatants. In Finkelstein's assessment, Israel is grievously violating Palestinian rights because its leaders deliberately choose to ignore both the humanity of the Palestinian people and the justice of international law. And in the claim that will perhaps stir the fiercest debates, Finkelstein asserts that when Dershowitz and his allies defend Israel with shoddy and mendacious scholarship, they actually stoke the very anti-Semitism they claim to be combating. Neither anti-Semitism nor global antipathy toward Israel will persist, Finkelstein avers, if Israel and its partisans will honestly confront and redress the malign consequences of current Israeli policies. This book, which has already sparked intense controversy, belongs in collections seeking to represent multiple points of view on significant topics of international interest. Bryce Christensen

"A very solid, important and highly informative book. Norman Finkelstein provides extensive details and analysis, with considerable historical depth and expert research, of a very wide range of issues concerning Israel, the Palestinians, and the United States." -- Noam Chomsky

Attack the work, not the man
By Matthew Smith
The only criticisms of this work I have seen are personal attacks against Mr. Finkelstein himself and not the scholarship itself. Is Mr. Finkelstein "anti-Semitic", a "self hating Jew", "crazy" or an "Arab apologist? Well, I don't the know man. He very well could be all these things and more, but is that really a cogent dissection of the themes, scholarship and the over all efficacy of the work? To that question I would answer no.

Finkelstein set out to enumerate the techniques used by Israeli apologists, and to that end I found Beyond Chutzpa to be beyond reproach. He sets out to use Dershowitz and other propagandist's own works to show how they go about disseminating falsehoods, exaggerations and lies to obfuscate the reality on the ground to the detriment of both sides. As for Dershowitz's works, Finkelstein devotes much of the book to systematically tearing down each of his arguments and shining a bright light on the shoddy scholarship used by Dershowitz. By using Dershowitz as an example case, he lays waste to the arguments that Israel is a humane and just nation that deals with all peoples, including the Palestinians, on an equal basis.

Mr. Finkelstein uses two world renowned human rights organizations, (and also Palestinian and Israeli organizations) Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, to document the numerous humanitarian violations committed by the Israeli government. He uses copious amounts of documentation from these organizations to rebut claims made by Dershowitz. He also points out Dershowitz's lack of reference to these organizations. This is a glaring omission since many times these organizations are the only groups to have neutral observers on the ground to witness and document what is happening in places like Gaza and the West Bank. How could anyone writing a book about this area not use these organizations as source material?

This conflict is a very divisive issue for anyone who delves even skin deep into this topic. We all come to the table with built in biases and well formed opinions, but we must sift through these "opinions" and figure out what is fact before there will ever be a peaceful conclusion. What we have now is not only killing Palestinians and Israelis, but in a wider context, destabilizing the entire world. Believe it or not many of the terrorists that have attacked the U.S. did not commit these acts because "they hate our freedoms" but rather is directly attributable to their belief that the U.S. is no longer an honest broker in the area, and when a UN vote in regards to Israeli policies comes up and the vote ends up being the entire world voting yea and the U.S., Israel and the Marshal Islands voting nay I believe they may have an argument.

People like Dershowitz do not help anyone when they obscure the reality of the situation. When someone from such a prestigious university says that Israel is wonderful place that has a wonderful record on human rights people here believe him. Then that means that the crazy hate filled Arabs are just racists who have a great life but just want to kill Jews anyway. We here in the U.S. must become the honest brokers that the citizenry believes we are, but to do that we have to have the blinders removed. So once again, if this book is a lie then attack the scholarship and expose it, but do not simply spout that he's a racist and expect me to dismiss this book.

Review written by a grandchild of the Holocaust
By David Rosen
Because I am Jewish, and because of my very real and painful connection to the Holocaust- my maternal grandmother is a living survivor of the Nazi camps- I take discussion of the Holocaust very seriously, and I take discussion of the Palestine-Israel conflict very seriously. This book by Norman Finkelstein speaks to both of these issues. I therefore read the book very carefully and critically, as I read all non-fiction books, whether written from a conservative or a liberal perspective.

I did not enjoy reading the Introduction, except for the last paragraph of the Introduction, where the author finally declares his purpose in writing this book. I am a practical person and I like to get right down to substance. I felt the Introduction explored arguments and concepts of an intellectual, abstract and often academic nature. I hold a masters degree in international affairs and I have considerable experience digesting abstract theory; I just happen to prefer dealing with concrete facts in the real world. My own advice is to skip the Introduction altogether. After finishing my copy of Finkelstein's book I gave it to a friend interested in the Palestine-Israel conflict and I said the same thing to him- just jump right into Part 1, where the book really begins. You can always come back to the Introduction when you finish the book itself.

And once you begin the book itself you immediately realize that the controversy surrounding the publication of this work and the angry statements going back and forth between the author, Norman Finkelstein, and the celebrity, Alan Dershowitz, actually occupy a very insubstantial part of Finkelstein's work. This book, "Beyond Chutzpah," has in my opinion virtually nothing to do with Alan Dershowitz, a man who many people for many years (myself included) have in any case seen as being nothing more than a clever but obnoxious media hack. My point is that "Beyond Chutzpah" is a book that addresses issues and movements far more significant than either of these personalities, Dershowitz or Finkelstein. If what you seek is mud slinging between these two men, then don't buy books from either author. Instead, simply visit the authors' respective websites, where you can relish the personal attacks and save yourself both time and money.

What is "Beyond Chutzpah" about? Well- have you ever had the impression that American Jews have, on an individual basis, and through some of America's Jewish groups, used the horrible experiences Jews have endured- like my grandmother- as a means of discouraging criticism, particularly criticism of the policies of the Israeli government? If you are American, and non-Jewish, in fact of any race, background or religion- have you ever felt you had to steer clear completely, or tip toe around, any discussion of Israel's military occupation, or of Israel's assassinations, or of any of Israel's policies whatsoever, for fear that you would be violently attacked as an anti-Semite? If you have- or if you are a non-American wishing to gain insight into the American political climate in relationship to the Palestine-Israel conflict- then you must read this book, "Beyond Chutzpah." With the greatest sobriety, in the clearest and most direct words, with no games or fanfare, Finkelstein- both of whose parents were survivors of the Nazi camps- describes how things in America have come to be this way.

Nobody outside of America can possibly begin to imagine the extent to which hysterical and fanatical Jewish Americans and hysterical and fanatical Jewish groups in America have successfully created through great effort over time a climate of moral, political and psychological blackmail. Even I, a Jewish man whose grandmother is a camp survivor, a Jewish man who has personally visited camps in Germany, Holland and Poland, and who has read endless books on the Holocaust, and who holds an extremely deep concern for Israel's safety and security, and has so held for years- even I cannot dare to raise my voice in criticism of Israel, or even address some of the blindingly obvious facts, for fear of an instantaneous and abominable backlash and assault. In "Beyond Chutzpah," Finkelstein explores this reality. Finkelstein goes to the very heart of the matter. And it is absolutely devastating.

By page 85, in the chapter titled "Crying Wolf," Finkeltein's words read like a revolution, some kind of an unbelievable feat. I deeply believe that this page in this book marks the beginning of what is going to be a sea change, a real movement, long overdue, toward honesty and gradual purification in relation to how Jewish Americans, my own peers, have misused anti-Semitism for political ends. What has been done is a sacrilege, and it is at long last going to be exposed- through this very book. I truly believe that this book will occupy that place in modern American history. Only by presenting some unbelievably ugly truths could any book written by any person at any time anywhere in this world ever even hope to encounter the level of hysteria and opposition that this book has faced. That right there tells you something.

The second major concern of this book is the origin, development and current status of the Palestine-Israel conflict. On this subject I have read countless books over many years- and Norman Finkelstein's exploration is unbelievably, and devastatingly, head on. In saying this I am including Finkelstein's materials in Appendix II. Appendix II is virtually a stand-alone presentation on the Palestine-Israel conflict. If your primary or even exclusive interest is the Palestine-Israel conflict, then "Beyond Chutzpah" is a book worth owning for Appendix II alone.

Earlier in the review I stated that "Beyond Chutzpah" was not about Dershowitz. Yet in the second part of "Beyond Chutzpah," Finkelstein makes reference after reference to the claims and conclusions in Dershowitz's book, "The Case for Israel." Finkelstein also dedicates some limited space to showing, embarrassingly well (and embarrassing not just for Dershowitz but for Harvard too) how Dershowitz engaged in plagiarism when writing "The Case for Israel." Still, I say that "Beyond Chutzpah" is not about Dershowitz. I say this because in fact Dershowitz is just a symptom of a far deeper malady, an interchangeable spokesperson for American Jewry gone mad- and as a Jew, it has taken me years of painful self exploration to come to terms with this ugly state of affairs. Again- Dershowitz is insignificant; yes, he's been embarrassed and exposed, but his replacements will line up to keep up the senseless, self-conscious and ultimately devastatingly-damaging-to-Israel campaign. Not only will Dershowitz be replaced, but the false and occasionally outrageous claims that Dershowitz has made in his book, The Case for Israel, are basically the same claims that Jewish American fanatics have been making all along. Truly, "Beyond Chutzpah" is not about Dershowitz, and it's not about Finkelstein either. I'm a middle aged cynic and yet still I deeply believe that Finkelstein's book marks the turning point, a signal that American Jewry is as a whole going to look at itself in the mirror now and begin refraining from this despicable dishonesty and unforgivably ugly hatred and intolerance of a weaker, desperate and humiliated group of people that in the end simply want a land that they can call their own.

Finkelstein denied tenure
By Orson Welles
This is a brilliant book. In a gross miscarriage of justice, DePaul University has denied its author tenure.

As the Chronicle of Higher Education says:

Mr. Finkelstein's case has excited widespread interest, in part because of the involvement of Alan M. Dershowitz, a professor of law at Harvard University. The two scholars have sparred repeatedly in public. Last fall, Mr. Dershowitz sent members of DePaul's law and political-science faculties what he described as "a dossier of Norman Finkelstein's most egregious academic sins, and especially his outright lies, misquotations, and distortions." Earlier Deroswitz had threatened to sue the U.C. press, the academic press that published the book.

UC press is one of the most prestigious university presses. Finkelstein's book was peer reviewed. His Department and Dean recommended he be awarded tenure. So much for free speech and academic freedom.

The Foundations of Modern Freemasonry: The Grand Architects—Political Change and the Scientific Enlightenment, 1714–1740, by R

Now in its second edition, The Foundations of Modern Freemasonry examines previously unexplored primary documentation and contributes to an understanding of contemporary English political and social culture. It explains how freemasonry became a mechanism that promoted the interests of the Hanoverian establishment and a social nexus that connected the metropolitan and provincial élites. The book reveals social networks centered on the aristocracy, parliament, the learned and professional societies, and the magistracy, and provides pen portraits of many of the key individuals who spread the Masonic message across Britain and Europe.

Review
" The transformation of English Freemasonry after the foundation of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717 was especially marked by the (largely nominal) leadership of young pro-Hanoverian Whig aristocrats who transformed Freemasonry into an important component of the economic, scientific, social, and political changes of the 18th century. Freemasonry rapidly became an important facet of the upper reaches of English society, and Berman (Oxford) traces the role these aristocratic architects played in the formation of what quickly became the most prominent and socially elite fraternal order of the modern era. There were important connections between Freemasonry and the judiciary, the Royal Society, and other learned and professional societies. Berman provides a useful introduction to these key figures, as well as a series of valuable appendixes, giving readers the Grand Officers of the Grand Lodge of England, excerpts from the Masonic 1723 Constitutions, a list of the various military lodges, and an inventory of the Masonic membership of selected professional societies. Although its origins as a doctoral thesis are all too clear, this remains a valuable work for serious Masonic historians. Recommended." --"Choice "

Islam in Liberalism, by Joseph A. Massad

In the popular imagination, Islam is often associated with words like oppression, totalitarianism, intolerance, cruelty, misogyny, and homophobia, while its presumed antonyms are Christianity, the West, liberalism, individualism, freedom, citizenship, and democracy. In the most alarmist views, the West’s most cherished values—freedom, equality, and tolerance—are said to be endangered by Islam worldwide.

Joseph Massad’s Islam in Liberalism explores what Islam has become in today’s world, with full attention to the multiplication of its meanings and interpretations. He seeks to understand how anxieties about tyranny, intolerance, misogyny, and homophobia, seen in the politics of the Middle East, are projected onto Islam itself. Massad shows that through this projection Europe emerges as democratic and tolerant, feminist, and pro-LGBT rights—or, in short, Islam-free. Massad documents the Christian and liberal idea that we should missionize democracy, women’s rights, sexual rights, tolerance, equality, and even therapies to cure Muslims of their un-European, un-Christian, and illiberal ways. Along the way he sheds light on a variety of controversial topics, including the meanings of democracy—and the ideological assumption that Islam is not compatible with it while Christianity is—women in Islam, sexuality and sexual freedom, and the idea of Abrahamic religions valorizing an interfaith agenda. Islam in Liberalism is an unflinching critique of Western assumptions and of the liberalism that Europe and Euro-America blindly present as a type of salvation to an assumingly unenlightened Islam.

Review
“Islam in Liberalism is required reading for anyone invested in Muslim Studies. This book reminds us that in order to move beyond scholarship revolving around a simplistic binarism between West and non-West, we must never forget how this opposition has shaped and continues to actively influence scholarship today. Furthermore, studying ‘Islam’ requires unpacking this term, which has become a reified, catch-all signifier in much Western scholarship. More than that, though, it may suggest that some of what is called Muslim Studies is less about something called ‘Islam’ than it is about liberalism. Thus, anyone who seeks to study Islam within a Western context must also undertake, as a necessary correlate to Muslim Studies, something that might be called Liberalism Studies.” (Los Angeles Review of Books)

“This erudite, at times frustrating, but always challenging, work of scholarship should be essential reading for all scholars of Islam and Middle East politics.” (Cambridge Review of International Affairs)

“Islam in Liberalism is thus a crucial, timely, and inspiring study for critics of liberalism and for scholarship about Islam in political and social theory more generally. It is simultaneously a massive synthesis of numerous literatures and discourses about Islam, and an original, provocative reading of what unites constructions of Islam with definitions of liberalism.” (Theory & Event)

“Here’s a book that Donald Trump should read. At the heart of Massad’s Islam in Liberalism is a narrative about terms, translation and global imperialism. This empire is largely cultural but can turn territorial, and it belongs to the ‘liberal’ West. Massad argues, with relentless pace, that the West’s drive to hegemony is supported by a series of images in political, media and scholarly discourse that position ‘liberalism’ and ‘Islam’ as antithetical to each other. . . . Massad’s relentless interrogation of Western stereotypes of Islam, Muslims and the ‘Muslim world’ is much needed at a time when the Republican front-runner can win votes by subjecting Muslims to yet more demonization.” (Theos)

“Islam in Liberalism is a timely nuanced book, written in the same spirit and comprehensiveness of Massad’s previous work. Here, he continues his scrutiny of the relationship between knowledge and power and succeeds in becoming one of the most articulate scholars of critical studies. The book is a blast on much of the taken-for-granted solid boundaries that previous generation of scholars have erected to eroticize Islam and Muslims and make both the antithesis of Western liberalism. . . . This is a dense book full of powerful evidence, arguments, claims and interpretations. It maps the genealogy of a complex intellectual history entrenched in imperialism, colonialism, domination and resistance. There is a dark side to this history that is so clear in Massad’s book. The story of Islam in Liberalism is a narrative not only about liberal fears and anxieties but also about racism, phobia, and negation of the agency of those who are labelled Muslims. . . . Islam in Liberalism is a landmark in the field of post-colonial studies.” (Madawi Al-Rasheed, Politics, Religion and Ideology)

“Massad’s Islam in Liberalism provides a far more nuanced and complex reappraisal of this tumultuous history in a brilliant and impressive synthesis of recent post-colonial, psychoanalytic, feminist, and political theoretical literatures.” (Marc Aziz Michael, Politics, Religion and Ideology)

“Islam in Liberalism is a welcome and timely intervention into one of the most pressing questions of our times: why does Islam occupy such a central inimical place within Western politics and ideology? Massad answers this question with a straightforward thesis: ‘Islam’ as such does not exist. What has come to be called ‘Islam’ as a supposedly homogenous cultural entity in reality has been fabricated by Western liberalism as its symbolic Other.” (Sara R. Farris, Syndicate Theology)

"This is a powerfully—often passionately--written text. . . . The only book that I can think of in comparison is Edward Said's Covering Islam—but Massad’s book is far richer both in terms of the literature covered (much of which was of course not yet available when Said wrote his book) and the range of questions engaged.” (Talal Asad Graduate Center, City University of New York)

"In recent years we have come to take seriously the idea that certain othering concepts such as 'the Orient' and 'Islam' have played a vital role in giving reality to 'the West.' The extraordinary value of Massad’s new book is that he has shown, through a sustained analysis of a wide variety of historical and contemporary discourses, that 'Islam' has been more than a periphery-defining concept utilized merely to lend truth and solidity to the Christian West. Far more importantly, 'Islam' has been at work as a powerful agonistic imaginary indispensable for the self-definition of the West’s own polity as essentiallyfree. This is a deeply considered work that is more than timely." (Tomoko Masuzawa University of Michigan)

“A bold and insightful study of the historical and contemporary uses and misuses of rhetorics of democracy, women’s rights and sexualities in their deployments in relation to Islam—a rich important contribution to a growing body of such critical literature.” (Leila Ahmed author of A Quiet Revolution: the Veil's Resurgence, from the Middle East to America)

“Massad is an important intellectual voice. He commands attention internationally. He offers distinctive, compelling, and often brilliant critiques of positions that many regard as sacrosanct: most notably the human rights regime, NGOS, and international development organizations, and does not spare the therapeutic enterprises of psychoanalysis and transcultural tolerance.”
(Anne Norton University of Pennsylvania)

“This indispensable compendium of rich, critical insights and readings is as learned as it is now necessary. Massad has recreated the scholarly and political context in which understanding of the relationships between Liberalism and Islam will be conducted.” (Paul Gilroy King's College London)

“This is a dense and densely argued book, in the best way, full of lively histories of the political, intellectual and cultural twists and turns that have enabled Western liberalism to so clearly dominate the discourse on Islam, and to claim it as the evil opposite while in fact feeding off that projection in order to strengthen itself. Islam in Liberalism provides a sophisticated set of analyses and critiques for those wrestling with the liberalism that overlays international matters, especially on Israel and Palestine.” (Electronic Intifada)

“Massad provides an objective and convincing analysis of the West’s exploitation and distortion of Islam for the purpose of promoting liberalism, basing himself and his points of view on old and new [historical] examples, events, and evidence framed in a coherent and fluid presentation.” (Al-Hayat)

“Islam in Liberalism raises important questions about the power and influence of Western NGOs and the humanitarian missions of Western governments. Massad is on unimpeachable ground in arguing that these institutions are not simply altruistic vehicles for do-goodism, and that those who claim that the West has a mission and a burden to save women, gays, or the oppressed in the Muslim world are necessarily rehashing old Orientalist tropes. In unearthing the unconscious motives and unspoken cultural assumptions underlying human rights and international organizations, Islam in Liberalism should be required reading for NGO workers the world over.” (Haaretz)

“It’s hard to imagine a more necessary and timely book. Massad’s work is likely to become the sine qua non of studies on how Islam and liberalism interface in politics and culture.” (Flavorwire)

“In Islam and Liberalism, Massad again draws on an impressive array of sources and with his particular wit and strong voice, he interpellates key authors and debates in order to question political and theoretical approaches that are taken for granted, with the aim of revealing the places where progressive critique falls short. He does so in a way that is always enlightening, and for my own purposes, most useful. . . . In his study, his aim is not just to prove the thesis that Islam, in its varying uses, is projected as the other of Western liberalism, providing it with its constitutive outside at the level of macro-politics. What we have here is an account of the specific myriad textural, political, and tactical practices by which different approaches and understandings of Islam have helped to give shape, meaning, and purpose to what liberalism could be—now and then.” (Leticia Sabsay, Syndicate Theology)

“Islam in Liberalism comprises a sequence of very rich and erudite forays into pivotal discursive domains in which Western liberalism has defined itself in defining its Islamic Other (democracy, ‘the woman question,’ sexuality, psychoanalysis, ‘semitism’). Much of the book consists of close readings which are both illuminating (none more perhaps than his dissection of the UNDP’s Arab Human Development Report 2005) and unsparing—especially when it involves refuting his critics, which he does with a kind of philological relentlessness in expansive footnotes that I imagine will deter many a potential future critic.” (Alberto Toscano, Syndicate Theology)

“This is a compelling work of scholarship by a committed public intellectual that is both insightful and timely, one that speaks to the general public and to academics. Massad does not deny that well intentioned struggles can be pursued under the banner of liberalism and its attendant human rights norms. He insists, however, that such struggles (for example, by activists for nongovernmental organizations) are doomed if they are not cognizant of the role of liberalism as an ideology of colonial and imperial history.”

(Journal of Palestine Studies)

“Massad’s book is persuasive, arguing that while constructed as the significant ‘Other’ of European and American identities, Islam—or more accurately, its representation—is not external to these politico-cultural configurations but firmly embedded within them as a constitutive element: Islam, he shows, has become fundamental to the West’s cultural and political self-image, figuring in turn in its moralizing projections towards, and geopolitical interventions within, Muslim societies. . . . Building on the foundations laid down by Said, Massad’s book provides important new insights into how the cultural logic of empire continues to function as a motive force within contemporary geopolitics.” (Richard Gale, Dialogues in Human Geography)

“Islam in Liberalism is a timely and important book to read, particularly as it urges us to continue to reflect in new ways not only on the prevalent imperial order, intellectual and militaristic, of spreading and securing ‘democracy and freedom’ but also on how Islam persistently is referenced and used in Western countries and in liberal discourse to deflect attention from and responsibility for schisms and repression of ideals said to be held close and intimately linked to democracy in the West.” (Anna Mansson McGinty, Dialogues in Human Geography)

“Islam in Liberalism is about the constitution of liberalism through the categorization, manipulation and demonization of Islam through time. Islam is formed not just in relation to, but inside liberalism, as its constitutive other; thus, the European projection of a homogenized and undifferentiated ‘Islam’, which shifts through time and the geopolitical and geoeconomic exigencies of different eras, is central to the birth, emergence and ongoing sustainability of the European liberal project. Showing how and why Islam and Muslims became and remain this ‘primary other’ to Western Europe’s identity and sense of self is Massad’s main project.” (Katharyne Mitchell, Dialogues in Human Geography)

“Islam and Liberalism is an agenda-setting book. It is polemical and combative in places, but even these elements can be read as provocations. Though not the first to argue that liberalism is exclusionary, Massad breaks new ground in the way he develops this claim, particularly in relation to sex. Doing so, he speaks both to sexual life and also to the broader issues and politics it raises, which broach some of the most important issues of our day: debates about who belongs or does not belong in Europe, and how Europe and the West should conduct its relationships with North Africa. At the same time, he gives us something to think about: something challenging, unsettling and fundamental.” (Richard Phillips, Dialogues in Human Geography)

“Thoroughly embedded within postcolonial studies and drawing heavily on Saïd’s legacy, Massad’s eloquent, engaged and at times passionate style of argumentation, urges, or even exhorts the reader to understand how mainstream assumptions and conceptualizations about Islam and liberalism obscure our understanding of the world and thwart our political imagination.” (Sami Zemni, Dialogues in Human Geography)

Brilliant and Timely Analysis of Liberal Discourse on Islam
By Mikhail B
Joseph Massad may be the most brilliant Arab intellectual historian writing today. This book just goes a step further in cementing that reputation. In a series of five essays, Massad demolishes Western preconceptions about Islam and politics in its discourse, showing not only how Western discourse confuses things by thinking of Islam as a homogenous category but also how the preferred "liberal" alternative is always ultimately grounded in its own savage imperialistic violence towards the Other. A violence that renders the self-righteousness of Western rights-based discourse about Muslims suspect at best. This becomes quite apparent in recent events such as the Charlie Hebdo killings. We are told that these are the expression of Muslim unwillingness to tolerate democratic values such as freedom of expression, yet such a discourse fails to grasp at the unequal power relations between white journalists and a vulnerable minority routinely excluded from the national community in what is supposed to be a "liberal humane society". I recommend this book wholeheartedly. It is an important contribution towards revising how we think of such conflicts, not just about Islam but also about the problematic foundations of political liberalism itself.

This book gets five stars because it makes excellent points backed up by solid references and covers a lot of ground. But...warning!...this book is an academic book aimed at academics, and it is not easy reading, especially if one is not an expert in the academic field it is about.
