Many useful ideas; could use better editing

As a translator and writer who often produces English documents for readers who are not native speakers of English, I have long wrestled with the problem of how to adapt my English writing style so that it is understandable to the widest possible audience. This book offers many useful ideas and pointers for people like me: avoid ambiguous and culturally-bound expressions, anticipate how individual words will be translated by readers into their native languages, avoid sarcasm and humor, and much more. I thus recommend this book strongly.

I wish, though, that it had been more carefully edited. In my first few minutes of skimming through it, I came upon several embarrassing errors: "The shorter Oxford English Dictionary has 25,000 entries" (p. 17) should be "The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary has [some much larger number of] entries"; references to "German-English" and "Hebrew-English" dictionaries (pp. 21-22) should be to "English-German" and "English-Hebrew" dictionaries; the example sentence "an investigate trail is cold" (p. 23) must be a typo (of "an investigation trail is cold"?); examples of hyphenation usage (p. 74) are unclear because the examples appear at the ends of lines; and an example text that is described as being in a mono-spaced font (p. 82) is in fact in a proportional font. Such mistakes distract from the book's overall worth.

Writers of English in a global environment have a wise and valuable guide and resource in Dr. Weiss and his book.

Weiss should practice what he preaches!

I think the overall content of this book is good. However, after about page 124, I got so tired of his American bashing that I found myself starting to just skim the pages. Ironically, he suggests writers avoid offending readers, yet he does this to Americans throughout the book.

As an American living overseas, I am interested in improving my communications for a global audience. I realize the conventions of English in the United States are different from most of the world. That is why I wanted to read this book.

I did gain some new perspectives from the book, but I did find it interesting that the writer did not follow his own advice.

Dr Johannes Hurter is a leading German historian of the Second World War based at the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich. In addition to writing many articles and chapters on aspects of the subject, he is the author or editor of Hitlers Heerfuhrer: Die deutschen Oberbefehlshaber im Krieg gegen die Sowjetunion 1941/42, Der deutsche Krieg im Osten 1941-1944: Facetten einer Grenzuberschreitung and Wilhelm Groener: Reichswehrminister am Ende der Weimarer Republik (1928-1932).

General Winter on the late 1941 Russian front.

Sadly, this book is not a significant memoir by a WWII German general. It is what its subtitle states: "The Letters and Diaries of Gotthard Heinrici 1941-1942" when he served in the Poland & Russia invasions. Like the letters most soldiers send home to their spouses and children, they know they aren't supposed to discuss military tactics, and, if they are smart, won't besmirch their commanders -- just in case the military letter censors happen to read their letters.

Like most soldiers, Heinrici complains about the dust clouds being churned up by the soldiers marching at the advance of the column, bemoans the mosquitoes lifting from the Russian swamps, poor re-supply, and the hot summer and cold winter climates of Mother Russia: "Colonel Hofsbach, a pessimist par excellence, was even more frustrated because his son had come home with frozen legs" (p. 114).

But Heinrici's letters really don't go into analysis of battlefield campaigns -- as to how the left wing advanced at night and encircled the enemy. This book doesn't contain Heinrici's memoirs about his battle efforts.

Yes, some of Heinrici's letters contain snippets about how pesky Russian partisan-guerillas where found in swamps and "harshly dealt with", but there are no detailed accounts as to how the Germans went trampling through the swamps in some meticulous detail in locating the partisans. Living in the comfort of better dwellings in town than his troops, Heinrici grew so tired of seeing captured partisans swinging from the gallows outside his townhouse that he had them removed after a couple of days: "I tell Beutelsbzacher not to hang the partisans closer than 100m to my window. Not a pleasant view in the morning" (p.102)

Yes, Heinrici wrote a couple of sentences here and there about how poor, slovenly Jews were noticed hawking goods in their ghettos, but Heinrici left no notes about whether or not his unit rounded up Jews for extermination. While none of his writings advocated the extermination of Jews, Heinrici seemed to be of the mind that the Jews certainly needed to be regulated -- rather than be given free reign in their cities.

Who was Heinrici? What were his thoughts about political issues? Some insights are provided: he supported Hitler's Nazi-socialist economic and lebensraum advocacy.

This book is not a "unit history" item. Sadly, it doesn't rise to the lofty levels of the memoirs penned by von Manstein or von Mellenthin. The graphic battlefield exploits of "Soldat" easily beat this book.

Initially, Heinrici observed that his soldiers had little high regard for the retreating Russians. However, begrudgingly, he opined: "The Russian is very strong and fights desperately, urged on by his commissars" (p. 71).

Even by August 1941, Heinrici is "convinced that this war will last a long time" (p. 78).

General Winter finally came to the aid of the Russians, and Heinrici noted in December 1941: "We are in dire straits right now. The enemy vigorously attacks our newly won positions. Our men are extremely exhausted. And we have around minus 20C.... The situation is as bad as never before..." (p. 109). And he talks about German soldiers "self-mutilating" themselves to escape combat. And then things get worse.

On 28 Feb 1942 he meets Der Fuehrer and after long arguments convinces Hitler to tolerate a short retreat around Yukhnov to prevent German units from being surrounded by the Russians (p. 134-135).

In his last 12 May 1942 entry Heinrici wrote: "I feel miserable and exhausted....I am at the end of my thther, so discontented and frustrated, shattered, demoralized and worn out by the imbalance between expectations from above and the reality of war... Everything here is awful."

What, no index? Nope.

The first 40% of this book (55 pages) is the author's commentary about the character of Heinrici and analyzing his diary notes. Only the last 50% contains actual quotations from Heinrici's diaries and letters to his wife. And 10% for "notes."

This book is definitely more about Henrici's observations as to how the war impacted upon himself, his soldiers and the Russians, rather than about combat tactics. An okay read.

This German General Has a Great Guardian Angel

It has always been a mystery how a country like the Soviet Union could lose 25 -27 M people and still win a war. France collapsed in June of 1940. Why didn't the Soviet Union which endured unbelievable losses and destruction on most of its populated area ? This book by Johanne Hurter on the diary of Col General Gothard Heinrici answers many of the questions of how the Russians under Stalin's rule were able to come back after receiving what many observers considered a series of "Knock Out Blows" by the Germans and its allies 1941 and also in 1942.

Heinrici provides several answers with an examination of the Russian character as he read about in Tolstoy. The general kept asking the question "Why don't the Soviets collapse like the French did ? To paraphrase his answer to this question... the Russian does not display initiative in his pursuits. He is obsessively stubborn when he is a herd of others and fights to the death, at others times though he will beat to death his commissars who threaten to shoot any soldier who does not charge into the German lines which is tantamount to suicide since the usual German line makes maximum use of machine guns to destroy human wave attacks. (Remember the German squad was built around the MG-42 machine gun the fastest machine gun in the world then and the basis for the current American machine gun today.) The Russian can either be incredible tough or they give up unexpectedly. They are completely unpredictable. The Soviet soldier will also pretend to be dead and let a German soldier pass by and then shoot him in the back. After few such incidents the Germans finds it necessary to shoot all soldiers laying on the ground who appear to be dead. The Russian soldier is amazing in that he can live off very little and still keep fighting. A field kitchen which the Germans had and was dependant on was virtually unknown in the Russian. The Russian could live off grass, tree bark and pine cones if he needed to witched awed the Germans. In short, the Soviet soldier was full of contradictions and at times appear indestructible in forbidden deep forests and swamps where mechanized German vehicles could not enter. Some Russians fight to the death while others surrender readily. No pattern could be seen. The Soviets appear very smart or very stupid. They are an enigma and unpredictable. And a terrifying opponent taken as a whole.

The Germans are also amazed how well-armed the Soviets are. The Germans invade with only 3000 tanks on June 22, 1941 and by spring of 1942 they have destroyed 35,000 tanks. The Communists and Stalin has indeed mercilessly industrialized the Soviet Empire since the 1917 Red Revolution under Lenin and Trosky and in 1928 under Stalin. These Athiestic Communist madmen have made the Soviet Union an arms weapons manufacturing and storehouse while starving millions of kulacks, former Tsarist civil servants, Russian Othodox priests, landowners and other so called enemies of the state to advance the cause of Communism to make their goal - World Revolution. They are the enablers of Karl Marx's vision & it is an evil one. Even though the Germans capture 6 million POW's and use 1 million of these unfortuates as Hiwis to fight Stalin it is not enough and the Germans eventually lose the war in 1945. Even at Stalingrad an estimated 50,000 Hiwis support the Germans in that cauldron and when they are captured are treated as traitors and are executed immediately. No Stalin has a cruel view of former Soviet soldiers. To him they do not exist but I disgress....back to the Heinrici's dairy.

This is excellent history written in a series of letters by Col General Henrici who by his own account dodges death on a daily basis in the terrible defensive ordeal known as the Battle of Moscow. The pictures are excellent and about the only shortcoming I see is the lack of maps. But the book is well edited and everything is footnoted where the text came from. Very professional looking and a great addition to what the German high Command was thinking in this time period.

What is also interesting is that when he meets face-to-face with Hitler, Heinrici admits that his "No Retreat Order" given in December of 1941 in order to prevent a panic similar to what the French Army in 1813 experienced was the correct choice to make as a general rule but in specifically in his area of combat he believes his troops should have been allowed to retreat to a better location and that they just managed to survive by incredible tenacity, small unit leadership and luck. Everyday for months on end from December of 1941 thru April of 1942 in the area before Moscow they endured mind numbing severe cold causing massive casualties of frostbite with temperatures down to -40 C while fighting a fanatical foe of fresh troops known as Siberians who were well provided with sheep skin protection. But he does admit that the Soviets fought with fury but not smartly as they kept "missing the big picture" by not cutting the German supply line when they were close to it. Heinrici never figures out why his troops were not destroyed in the awful cauldron. The Soviets have the means to do so and there was really nothing preventing them from destroying the Main Supply Line but for some unforeseen reason the Soviets could not apply the Coup de Grace or Killing Blow. After 7 months in this onslaught Heinrici was sent to a resort to recover from this nightmare. Highest Recommendation if you want to understand the German perspective.

Quality book on Eastern Front from a Competent Fighter

This book I just completed. A general who is not well known but right in the thick of things. I have come across Heinrici in m a my ww2 studies and this is another easy read, but some good information. I would recommend for anyone interested in the German Generals.

About the Author

Deborah Voigt is one of the world’s leading dramatic sopranos, internationally revered for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. She has also portrayed some of the iconic heroines in Italian opera to great acclaim. An active recitalist and performer of Broadway standards and popular songs, Voigt appears regularly, as both performer and host, in the Metropolitan Opera’s The Met: Live in HD series. She is also co-creator of Voigt Lessons, a one-woman show she developed with award-winning playwright Terrence McNally and director Francesca Zambello.

Candid look at an opera singer's life...

As a relatively recent convert to the joys of opera - both live and on the screen - I "discovered" the "Live at the Met in HD" Saturday broadcasts a couple of years ago. I almost like them better than attending performances because the camera at the Met is directed where it's important that the viewers watch. For a "newb" like me, that's golden. Another great part of the broadcasts are the live backstage interviews by singers who take us "behind the scenes" of the performance. Of the several I've seen, I think my favorites are those done by soprano Deborah Voigt. She brings a freshness and sense of joyful playfulness to the interviews of the performers and conductors. She asks questions that are a bit "unexpected" and it's fun to hear the answers she elicits.

Deborah Voigt - born "Debbie Joy Voigt" to teenage parents - has written an interesting autobiography, "Call Me Debbie: True Confessions of a Down-to-Earth Diva". Voigt seems to hold nothing back about her private life, from being raised in a "Christian" home where her parents were alternating between encouraging Debbie's vocal gifts to washing her mouth out with soap for not behaving. She's candid about her addictions to food and liquor and her attempts at losing weight and staying sober. Voigt also writes about her love life, which seems to have been one unavailable lover after another.

Deborah Voigt's professional life, her education, her operatic advancement, and the music and performers she's worked with over the years are also covered with honesty. That "little black dress" debacle at London's Royal Opera House in 2004 when Deborah was fired from a role - "Ariadne" in Richard Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos - because she was too heavy to wear the black dress the director wanted her to wear. She had been struggling with her weight since childhood and had reached a weight of 330 pounds at her heaviest. She underwent lap-band surgery and lost a great deal of weight, finally fitting into the black dress. But her life continued with great success on the stage with difficulties off the stage. She finally went through 30 day alcoholic rehab a couple of years ago and dealt with her problems.

Voigt's book is a candid look at her life and career and how the two affected each other. I enjoyed the book and can recommend it. Oh, and I am going to the Saturday, Jan 31st "Live in HD" opera and, joy, Deborah Voigt is the back-stage interviewer.

That was the voice that the author heard, whilst still a young girl in 1974, sitting in bed. These words, apparently a message from God, were "powerful enough to put me onto the path I would follow from that moment onward." Indeed, starting from such modest beginnings, that little girl went on to become a great opera singer, starring in many of the most famous operas in history, and performing on some of the greatest stages on earth.

It was not at all an easy route for young Debbie. There wasn't much encouragement on the family front, where the musical choices were severely limited. Her parents announced, "We don't want you listening to any of that wild, rock and roll." At first, instead of getting much-needed approval, little Debbie got scorn and shame. Nonetheless, she loved to sing roles from the great musicals such as My Fair Lady and the Sound of Music.

Eventually, when her talent was becoming very obvious, and she was winning awards in school, Debbie finally got some encouragement from her parents, who looked for voice teachers for her. This led her to some kind mentors.

One of the most touching scenes revolves around the "Crystal Cathedral" in Orange County, California. The pastor's wife was an avid opera fan, and had created a music scholarship. She auditioned for, and won that scholarship, and she briefly studied voice with a teacher at that church. At the Crystal Cathedral, Debbie got just the encouragement she needed, after singing to a teacher there: "Listen to me. Please. You REALLY have talent. Your voice is a gift and you've got to do something with it." This prompting led Debbie to her most inspirational teacher, Jane, who became "the most influential voice teacher in my life... she'd also become my dearest friend and biggest supporter and encourager."

CALL ME DEBBIE is a bittersweet story, starting with the author's childhood, and covering her entire career in opera. Ms Voigt really bares her soul in this story, explaining her lifelong struggle with weight, as well as her difficulties with alcoholism. The author bravely recounts some of these sad experiences, including stays in a rehab center, as well as AA meetings.

√ All in all, CALL ME DEBBIE is a fascinating look at the life of one of opera's most talented performers. It is a tale of small beginnings with big problems. The author had to overcome a ton of issues. Recommend!

Finding your way

I was searching for a book to read on my Kindle. I was reading the info telling what the book was about. I tapped the screen to enlarge the print and accidentally purchased the book. I thought this book I am meant to read! I could not put it down! I still struggle with alcohol. I have attended AA, I always go back to the bottle. But I pray one day I can love myself enough to find the strength to let go and let God. Bless you Debbie Voigt!

Be the love that you are looking for

Limiting beliefs are like thieves in the night and this book prompted me to question the mindset of mindless accumulation. Through his specially crafted messages and action steps, Garret gently coaxes us to be more courageous to give away the very resources that we cling to because our fear of lack is misplaced. This book was a powerful reminder to me that sincere generosity is one of the greatest keys to unlocking our own abundance. This was a great read and a great reflection on what is at the heart of giving. I know Garrett so this will be a biased review - however, knowing the character of the man only makes this first effort all the more exciting. Garrett has a true heart for charity and a true passion for writing and encouraging others. I will read this book many times over the years to remind myself what giving is really all about. Keep your eye on Garrett Biss as he is destined for great things.

Richard L. Pifer is the retired director of the Reference and Public Services Bureau of the Library-Archives Division of the Wisconsin Historical Society. He has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Home Front History From Labor's Perspective

World War II was not fought only on battlefields and the seas by soldiers and sailors, but also in factories by workers and managers. “A City at War” is the story of this home front told from the perspective of organized labor. Author Richard L. Pifer lays the background of Milwaukee’s historic industrialization and the state of its economy and workforce as well as the economic and political milieu in which it grew. Readers learn of Milwaukee’s transformation from a processor of food to a producer of steel and machinery. Pifer also explains the ongoing rivalry between the craft unions, concentrated in the A F of L and the industrial unions of the CIO. Resulting jurisdictional disputes would continue to contribute to labor unrest during the war. With its German and industrial heritage Milwaukee was unique among American cities in repeatedly election Socialist mayors.

“A City At War” chronicles the role of organized labor in negotiating the agreements for overtime and work rules and organizing patriotic initiatives, such as war Bond Drives that enabled industry and labor to contribute to the war effort. I have read histories of industry’s role in providing tools need by the military, but this is the first book I have seen viewing the history from labor’s perspective. One topic the labor historian must address is labor’s record of striking while America’s sons were fighting and dying, a practice some regard as disloyal. Pifer confronts the issue head on. He demonstrates that both management and labor maintained a perspective extending into an era of peace when struggles over profits, wages and work rules would determine the success of companies and the security of workers. Pifer makes the case that strikes were fewer and of shorter duration during the war than they were before and would be after. World War II is shown as a time during which inflation was rampant, even though partially suppressed by wage and price controls. Workers endured economic hardships while struggling to make ends meet and preserve their post-war prosperity. Although focusing on Milwaukee, its experience overlapped that of many other communities. I finished this tome with a deeper understanding of the role domestic labor relations played in contributing to victory. It is essential to an understanding of the home front in World War II.

Based on original records and archives,the writer described an deep and lively social historical imagine in War Two. Especially, he told a brilliant story of women and grass root class,and these inspired us the victory coming from ordinary America people whether they were in battle field or they were in factories in home front.

Good topic, but not objective coverage

Selecting a city that offered unique dynamics for labor/management relations during World War II, Mr. Pifer makes his pro-union, pro-labor bias very clear through the entire book. Well researched and documented, very little is seen from management's viewpoint and the costs incured by business during the war. Each chapter seems to use the same phrases from beginning to end, as if there was a shortage of terminology.
While the topic is well chosen, this is not an unbiased historical account. The potential for a solid piece of historial writing was there, but the mark is missed in an effort to promose a specific viewpoint.

Olusegun Obasanjo, soldier, statesman, author and farmer was born in Ibogun-Olaogun in what was then Abeokuta Province of 1930s colonial Nigeria. His career in the Nigerian Army would see him serve in the UN Peacekeeping Mission to the Congo in 1961, see him rise to the position of General Officer Commanding the 3rd Marine Commando Division of the Nigerian Army during the Civil War, and culminate in his appointment of Head of State, and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
He handed over power to a democratically-elected civilian administration in 1979 and retired to a life of farming. As a statesman he was called upon by the international community, in one instance to serve as co-chair of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons' Group constituted to work on negotiated settlement for the ending of the South African Apartheid policy in 1985. He was also a candidate for the office of Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1991. A fearless critic of bad government, he was jailed from 1995-1998 by the Abacha government.
Obasanjo was sworn-in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigerian on May 29 1999.
He stepped down from the presidency in 2007 at the end of his second term and returned to his farm. He is currently the chief promoter of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.
Olusegun Obasanjo has authored several books, significant amongst them, My Command, about his experiences in the Nigerian Civil War; Not My Will, about his service to the nation as Military Head of State; This Animal Called Man, a philosophical reflection on the nature of man written during his time as a political prisoner; and Nzeogwu, about his friend and key figure in the January 1966 coup.

Interesting Read.

Contains a lot of new materials, a lot of insights into what goes on at the seat of power. Touches frankly on what has become Nigeria's worst enemy: a thoroughly corrupt system of government/governance.
Could have made a more engaging reading without the boring repetition of several speeches/addresses. Was silent on the author's socialization with the felon, Bode George, after the latter's release from prison.

Hate him or like him I find the book interesting to read and revealing even if only from the prism of one player in the events. He is a significant participant whose contribution in my view was significantly positive. Recommended for all interested in knowing how Nigeria was governed under Obasanjo's watch

Stories That Will Make You Laugh

I, too am a relative and read the book in one sitting. I laughed so hard at times, my husband, who met Aunt Della only once some years ago, became so curious he had to read it and loved it. Some of the stories relate to events that my dad told to me and my siblings and I enjoyed reading about them as told from Aunt Della's perspective. This is a great biography written by a strong woman, who has maintained a wonderful sense of humor, even after loosing her husband when she was a young mother, and her youngest son when he was only 21. In the book are a couple of Aunt Della's paintings from 2013. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in rural life when this nation was young and finding its' way before television and more technical things. I plan to give copies to a number of friends.

Great snippets of growing up in the 1930's in rural West Virginia and life after in suburban Cleveland

In full disclosure I am biased, Della is my mother, and although I contributed one short story and a lot of photos to this document I did not read all the stories in advance nor do the editing. My sister Jeanette and Brother-in-law Bob did that.

There are a few errors in spelling and grammar as to be expected with non professional transcribers.

Many of the things in this short book are things I had heard many times before. Many other things are new to me. Like all stories passed on verbally they tend to change a little with each telling and with time. Some are as I thought I remember them some are not.

Della grew up in a time that is foreign to most of us that live in suburbs and cities today. If you were to treat someone to the conditions that they had it would be called abuse today. They, the Jones family, not only survived those conditions they thrived. Most of the things we think of as essential today did not exist or they were not well enough off to have them available. This compilation of short stories does a good job describing that.

Della started this book while living in a house attached to my sister Jeanette's house. Della finished it while living in assisted living with the help of her friends and her caretakers.

The book is not long and since all the stories are only a page or two it can be read in short sessions or in an hour or so all at once. For friends and relatives there are lots of personal photos. Where personal photos were not available generic historical photos were used.

If you are a friend or relative or a rural West Virginia native you should thoroughly enjoy this if not you might not enjoy it.

A LOOK BACK IN TIME

What a pleasure to read about a person's personal family history that you know. My husband and I know Della as she is the wife of our cousin Barry. Gloria is her daughter and the book shows where Gloria got her strength of character, her inability to ever sit down, her willingness to tackle any chore that is handed to her, and her great personality. If today's young people only had the upbringing that Della and her Mother did they would be all the stronger and smarter for learning the true meaning of a family united caring for each other and working together as a team. Families like Della's had it tough, but their strength came from being a family. The very fact that Della's brother Paul developed Polio, and Della along with her sibblings worked to help him learn to walk again is a testimony to how close and committed they were to each other. I loved the story about Della stealing a piece of candy and hiding it under the porch to eat later. It reminded me of my Mother's story of how she took her allowance money and bought jello to make. She stuck it under her bed and it never jelled. She did not realize it needed to be refridgerated. Yet with all the hard work,
carrying water from the well, stuffing their beds with straw, helping with chores, they still had time to have fun and get into some mischiff. It also shows how Della's little red coat was so precious to her that she wore it till she could no longer fit into it. Something as little as that is totally taken for granted by many people today. The pictures of the family and the stories by Della's family and friends shows how special she is.
