A great true story about Debbie Singh's efforts over 8 years dealing with the Thai officials and culminating in her success in getting her brother (who had been sentenced to 10 years for attempting to cash false travelers checks), transferred to serve the balance of his sentence in an Australian jail. In the process, she falls in love with Thailand, and has become tirelessly involved in various charitable efforts in Thailand. A good story written by a good person.

This book is easy to read, and packs quite a punch! Full of twists and turns and the author is so honest with her approach that it is easy to relate. And, it's all true! Not just a prison book but a real story of hope and charity.

Really good read. Sad to think that after all that effort, time and money, Debbie did not receive the thanks and satisfaction she really deserved. It helps to see another side of people and prepare yourself yet again to understand that life just isn't fair sometimes.

This book was a joke. There are many other books that would educated and inform to a greater degree than this so called book. I got more out of a 10 years news paper than this book.

Good read

I sat down and read from front to back in a half an hour I have always loved the Dillinger books sence I was a kid growing up in Mooresville Indiana.. I even went to church with his half sister and her family great group of people she loved her big brother and never wanted to make money off of him she was proud to be his sister and loved him dearly

Another great book on Dillinger.This book will fill in those crevices from his initial youth days to his first negligible wrongdoings. Follow the progressions of John's rising to reputation with a record of his heists and the business as usual behind them.

Correcting an oversight ....

V. I. Lenin wrote this book in 1917, while he was hiding from the Russian government. Lenin pointed out that "The question of the relation of the state to the social revolution, and of the social revolution to the state, like the question of revolution generally, was given very little attention by the leading theoreticians and publicists of the Second International (1889-1914)". He wanted to correct that oversight, and that is probably the main reason why he wrote this book.

"The State and revolution" is a very short book, well structured and not difficult to read at all. Initially this pamphlet was going to have seven chapters, but Lenin didn't conclude the seventh, due to the outbreak of the Russian revolution. In the postscript to the first edition he explains that, saying that due to the reasons already explained the conclusion of the seventh chapters would have to be put off for quite a long time, but that all the same "It is more pleasant and useful to go through the `experience of revolution' than to write about it".

The main idea in "The State and revolution" is that the State is a product of the irreconcilability of class antagonisms, and an instrument for the exploitation of the oppressed class (a "special coercive force" that rules through violence). The State of the bourgeoisie will disappear, but only through a revolution that will take the people to the dictatorship of the proletariat. The proletariat (the working class) will become then the ruling class, "capable of crushing the inevitable and desperate resistance of the bourgeoisie, and of organizing all the working and exploited people for the new economic system. The proletariat needs state power, a centralized organization of force, an organization of violence, both to crush the resistance of the exploiters and to lead the enormous mass of the population -the peasants, the petty bourgeoisie, and semi-proletarians- in the work of organizing a socialist economy."

The dictatorship of the proletariat will be only a first stage in the path to Communism ("Then the door will be thrown wide open for the transition from the first phase of communist society to its higher phase, and with it to the complete withering away of the state"). According to Lenin, the necessity of systematically imbuing the masses with the idea of the necessity of violent revolution lies at the root of the entire theory of Marx and Engels. All throughout this book, Lenin cites and examines Marx and Engels' writings, in order to explain and support his own point of view.

The importance of Marxism for nowadays world has diminished enormously, but I advice you to read this book nonetheless. It is certainly not a grueling task, and it will allow you to understand better some notions that many Marxist leaders believed with all their hearts. Ideas drive men, and men make history. "The State and revolution" will help you to get acquainted with some of those ideas, and that is not a small feat.

An excellent description on the role of the state

This is an excellent book on the role of the state after a revolution, how it will wither away, and what a society should look like ( or try to mould itself into ) after the revolution. Lenin, drawing on the works of Marx and Engels extensively, refutes many claims by both the Anarchists and opportunists on the role of the state, and corrects many common errors believed about the Marxist road to Socialism. This is a thoroughly informative read. I recommend those wondering how a Communist society would emerge after a revolution to get this book; It will open your eyes widely.

Intelligent and Challenging

This is one of books most interesting and challenging books I've ever read. It is enjoyable and the writing style is wonderful. However, the ideas are what I most enjoyed. Whether you agree or disagree with Lenin, this book is an important marker in modern political analysis. Personally, I loved it and find myself returning to it often for clarity and inspiration.

In 1994, primary school teacher Sheila Wright suddenly had the means to buy a house in the Creuse department of central France but the amount of her windfall meant that she was looking at “the bottom end of the market”. She found herself falling ridiculously in love with a very old stone farmhouse which had been abandoned for 50 years and had an alarming 20ft crack up the front.

As she looked round the old kitchen, the smell of damp stone and ancient dust was all-pervading. In the gloom, shadowy alcoves and battered wood frames were barely visible on the rough granite walls. Mysterious bits of string dangled from the immense beams above, and between these beams were dark, narrow boards through which light filtered where rain had rotted them away.

One wall of the room was taken up by a vast fireplace with a huge hearthstone. Up the wide chimney, past various sinister blackened iron hooks, a patch of bright blue sky was visible. The wall separating the adjacent cellar-like room from the adjoining barn had crumbled and fallen, covering the earth floor with tons of loose granite. The jagged top of this wall was now only five feet high and over this, the neighbouring cart bay, cow shed and stable were all visible.

From these inauspicious beginnings, Sheila, her husband Ron, their large family and many friends worked hard to create a holiday home full of happiness, music, laughter and love. Along the way (only 5ft 2in and in her mid-50s) she developed a passion for building with stone, constructing two granite staircases herself over a five-year period. French neighbours seeing the Wrights tackle their enormous DIY task fervently wished them “bon courage” which could perhaps be translated loosely as “Good luck – you’ll need it!”

This book traces the story of the ongoing restoration in a series of chapters which also give Sheila’s thoughts on aspects of Creusoise life and her experiences in France. It is illustrated with her own charming pen and ink drawings.

Entertaining

Sheila Wright does a nice job writing about her experiences purchasing and partially renovating an old wreck of a little farm in France. I would have liked to have read more about the renovation projects and the people and less about where they went for recreation or sightseeing.

Many of the drawings in the book are excellent.

I hope Sheila and her family are doing well and still enjoying their property.
