Great Read!

I've read most of what Roslyn Ross has on her blog, and STILL found this book full of thought-provoking and extremely relevant information. This book is a clear, concise work, and offers insight on many aspects of raising a tiny human respectfully that the majority of parents would never even consider. If you are looking for guidance on how to raise a rational, respectful, independent human, this is an excellent read! As she points out in her book, Objectivists often abandon their rationality when it comes to parenting and resort to Behaviorism tactics. But this is the time period when it's most important to model respectful behavior. She doesn't just point out what's wrong with most parenting practices; she offers an alternative approach entirely - one that not only makes sense, but works. I've already recommended this book to several friends and family members.

Not an impartial review

I am very close to Roslyn so the novel ideas presented in the book were not new to me, however, every time I think of how beneficial her ideas are to me and my relationship with my three year old son I am very glad she spent over 8 years developing and refining her theory of parenting.

My only critique is the name of the book. Really she created a relationship theory of parenting and adapted it to an objectivist audience - it is not directly an objectivist theory of parenting.

I loved this book- it takes objectivist ideas and applies them effortlessly into a wonderful guide on how to raise children in the 21st Century. It has made me rethink how I am raising my 2 year old daughter. My only critique is the title- It should be more like a book's and less like a masters thesis :)

About the Author

Uldis Kruze is Associate Professor of History at the University of San Francisco, USA. His teaching covers the entire range of East Asian history, including the history of US-East Asian relations and his research interests have focused on postwar Japanese politics and Chinese politics. He is the author of San Francisco and the 1951 US-Japan Peace Treaty Conference (2001).

Amazing book: a must read for both Japanese historians and casual politicos alike

Absorbing in its details and incredibly well written, Kruze tells the heretofor untold story of elusive Japanese politician Shin Kanemaru, a powerhouse of Japanese democracy horribly tarnished by charges of corruption. Kruze has an inviting and clear voice and his story incredibly compelling, built around shrouded political figures and scandal that curiously escaped much of the public attention it deserved. With rich research and intelligent interpretation, Kruze details the riveting story of how Kanemaru was able to hide a corrupt empire for so long, and his eventual fall from grace when he was finally indicted in the Sagawa Kyubin scandal. In another case of where truth is more exciting and stranger than fiction, Kanemaru was found with approximately $51 million in bearer bonds and hundreds of pounds of gold stored in his home when he was ultimately arrested.

This is a very authoritative account and I think it would be a tremendous help to any college student, graduate student or professor in understanding the true history of that era. The book is also a page turner, as it cleverly navigates the story of a "disgraced kingmaker who epitomized a corrupt back-room style of Japanese politics" in an artful and beautifully written way. It is one of those rare works of non-fiction that one could read both on the beach, and in the classroom.

Analysis of New York politics

Of particular interests are the insights on how the New York legislature operates. We see the divisions along political parties and the intense struggles over just 2% to 3% of the state budget. Readers learn of the unique political powers New York legislative leaders have and how they obtain and maintain such authority.

New York has a large number of local, county, and state government agencies. Even local governments differ as they reflect various British, Dutch, New England, and Western influences. Governance in New York is difficult to manage and understand. This book, though, is a great guide to at least achieving comprehension of how New York is governed.

Thank you to Cynthia F. Hayostek, to whom my family and I are grateful for producing this story of B.A. Packard, our family's patriarch.
Packard settled in Tombstone in the Arizona Territory in 1880 where he spent the next fifty five years building a legacy in mining, cattle, politics and mentoring people. He co-founded the Arizona State Fair, the Bank of Douglas, represented Arizona at national political conventions, had a squabble or two with then Secretary of State Williams Jennings Bryant, owned a pair of world champion Hereford bulls, and generally made an impact in all aspects of his life.

a great light collection on the topic

An interesting collection of facts and entertaining entries, this work is a perfect reader for anyone who’s looking to learn something but doesn’t want to dive into an encyclopedia length non-fiction. It’s a light and easy read but contains some very intriguing information that one probably isn’t going to find in your run-of-the-mill historical textbook.

I enjoyed the variety of stories in this volume, from the very well-known like Will & Kate (you’d have to be living under a rock to not be aware of this one!!) to the more obscure like Victor Emmanuel and Rosa. The author incorporates pictures and some quotes to give the book some weight but writes in such a way that I fairly flew through this work on royal love stories.

I’ve read the author’s work on Titanic newlyweds and see that she’s also done similar works for war romances. I can’t wait to dive into more from her. I’d recommend this work if you’re in the market for light historical non-fiction that won’t put you to sleep or weight you down with a mountain of indigestible facts.

I was disappointed in errors in book

I was disappointed in errors in book, i.e., the number of children of Nicholas and Alexandra going to their demise and the age when Rasputin started to assist the son which was off by several years. Makes me wonder about the rest of the book. And the type is SO SMALL; I had to
use a magnifying glass on some of the picture captions. But interesting nonetheless.

Looking at royals through rose colored glasses

This book offers a look at selected royal couples from Portugal's king in the 16th century to William and Kate. It offers a very brief bio of the 2 people who are married, gives an overview of their married life, and offers interesting factoids about them as a couple. I have the hardcover version. There are no color photos in this book at all even though some of the royals featured in this book were married in the latter part of the 20th century and in the 21st century (William and Kate). As another reviewer stated, there are errors in this book and if you are a history buff this will bother you. I would categorize this book as a puff-piece rather than viewing it as a real historical book. It contains fluff and is probably geared toward someone looking at the royals with rose colored glasses.

Great Read on a Remarkable Life

I have heard much about Gandhi's life growing up. Taking the time to learn and grow my knowledge, I discovered how much more there was to this remarkable man's life. This book is a great introduction to the work of Gandhi. It is a short book that delivers a lot of good information. I gained a greater respect for his life's work. If you want to learn more about Gandhi this book is a great starting point.

Everything you always wanted to know about Gandhi in less than 2 hours!!!

I was inspired by this short biography of one of this world's greatest leaders.His commitment to non-violet confrontation is a lesson many of our present leaders should learn before making decisions that affect their peoples' lives.It would be a better world if we all followed Gandhi's "Christ-like" example when dealing with our fellow human beings.

Enlightening

I knew far less than I thought about Ghandi. In this book I learned that he was not only the religious figure I thought he was, but was foremost a tireless laborer for the poor, as well as a liberator of the Indian people, an impressive peacemaker and politician. He lived what he preached in every sense of the word, and his faith and principles were uncompromised. A nicely set out biography of Ghandi's life.

Not a cookbook but real history and interviews.

Growing up in Coastal Georgia you hear things. Rumors of people you don't cross or somebody who can bring you luck in love or money. Maybe you know somebody who knows somebody who can do you a favor in an impossible situation. But it's never spoken of directly. It's not Starbucks conversation. I never met anyone who went to a Root Doctor, (at least nobody who confirmed it) but I knew lots of people whose "cousin this one time got out of a ticket because he had the Hoodoo man working for him.
Mr. Leslie's book helps bring things out into the open. Another reviewer called it an "anthropological view" and that's an excellent description. Low Country Shamanism may not be deep, but it is a broad, interesting overview of Hoodoo culture in it's historical, mythological and present incarnations.
If like me, you've lived in the low-country and only had a vague idea of this underground cultural current then this book will help place some of your knowledge, conversations and possibly experiences in a broader context.
If you're interested in shamanism and mysticism as a cultural phenomenon then you will find this treatise on Hoodoo a fine work to add to your collection.
If you're interested in Voodoo, Hex work, the occult in general, etc... then you should know that this isn't a cookbook of "how to make a mojo bag using only ingredients in your kitchen". In fact you may find some of your assumptions challenged by the interviews of actual practitioners and those seeking to keep the knowledge and historical culture of Hoodoo alive and vibrant. And having your assumptions challenged can often be a good thing.
In short it's a good book. Four stars because I'm interested and want more.

Fun and educational read

This is an interesting anthropological look at the Hoodoo culture of the coastal Carolina's and Georgia. It was a sympathetic view into a subject that I know very little about.

Well written and thoughtful book on folk magic practices (Conjure/Hoodoo) found in this part of the US. One of the better books addressing this topic.
