Christian Perspectives on Being Human: A Multidisciplinary Approach to IntegrationFrom Wipf & Stock

While there is a unity to truth from God's perspective, there are nevertheless many different ways of knowing, studying, and defining that truth. Thus, "the task of integration is the task of relating theology and other disciplines in such a way that one articulates and defends a comprehensive, unified Christian worldview" Christian Perspectives on Being Human is a vital step in that essential process of integration. In this unique anthology, colleagues from various departments at Biola University undertake an important multidisciplinary approach to integration. J. P. Moreland and David Ciocchi represent philosophy in this discussion; Robert Saucy, theology; Sherwood Lingenfelter, anthropology; Nancy Duvall and Keith Edwards, psychology; Walt Russell and Scott Rae, New Testament and medical ethics; and Klaus Issler, Christian education.

What does it mean to be Human?
By Don Haflich
The issues and problems surrounding our humanness are many. From freedom of conscience to our psyche, we as humans are a complex breed. In an interesting anthology, colleagues from various departments at Biola University have created a multi-faceted approach to discovering what it means to be human. Christian Perspectives on Being Human covers a huge range of topics from libertarian free will to a substance dualist view of the soul and everything in-between.

This volume does more than bring together colleagues, it offers a a response from and a challenge to think more robustly across the various disciplines about the nature of our humanness. This form of writing helps the reader to have an array of perspectives on any given topic, allowing the reader to formulate his or her own conclusion after finishing a section.

This volume is well put together and the arguments logical and tightly woven. It's hard to imagine that one could come at the topics from any other perspective than the ones fully fleshed out in the main articles. Though short, the articles pack in the research with clear explanations and a definition of terms hard to find elsewhere in similar treatments.

In my view the most helpful treatment of a subject is found in Chapter 3 in discussing Human Freedom. David Ciocchi brings the reader through various views of free will. He posits that a soft determinism is most logically compatible with the view that God is totally sovereign and man completely free in his will.

If I am a theologian who believes in soft determinist free will, then I will have no need of either reformulating my positions to eliminate apparent inconsistencies or of appealing to paradox should my reformulations fail to be convincing. This is because soft determinism and theological determinism are logically consistent. It is possible to affirm both that God has ultimate control over all events, including human choices, and that we human beings necessarily act on our preferences, that is, that we have free will in a sense that is compatible with determinism.
In leaving out historical treatments of this subject, such as those of Luther on the Bondage of the Will or Edwards on the Freedom of the Will, leads me to believe that the authors is not willing to deal directly with these men, or the space allotted for the subject matter. Ciocchi does mention Edwards in the "Further Reading" section but as a fan of Edwards, I would have enjoyed a more thorough treatment of his treatise. This lack does now, however, detract from the subject in any way. The author does a fantastic job of presenting a very complex subject in relatively clear terms.
Christian Perspectives on Being Human is well worth the read. It brings together a top-notch set of scholars and allows them to play off each others strengths and weaknesses. In a format that allows the reader to grow and learn, I heartily commend this volume for an extended and deeper look on what it means to be human, and humanity created in the image of God.

Great reading experience!
By kevin allar
I love happy endings. What drew me into "Embrace the Moment" was about the tremendous difficulties and hardships that Bonnie describes openly in her book. I went through many of life's difficulties too - death, divorce, and major job challenges. The important message here is to learn from the past, be positive and work through life's difficulties. Her style of writing is very conversational - as if she were right across from me at a coffee table which made the book very easy to digest.

There are so many negative things going on in our world today-just turn on the news. It was very refreshing to hear positive thoughts, quotes, and real life experiences as Bonnie has described in her amazing book. Believe me, you'll instantly relate to her and leave with a fun, uplifting experience!!

Compassionate Stranger: Asenath Nicholson and the Great Irish Famine (Irish Studies), by Maureen O'Rourke Murphy

The first biography of Asenath Nicholson, Compassionate Stranger
recovers the largely forgotten history of an extraordinary woman. Trained as a school teacher, Nicholson was involved in the abolitionist, temperance, and diet reforms of the day before she left New York in 1844 "to personally investigate the condition of the Irish poor." She walked alone throughout nearly every county in Ireland and reported on conditions in rural Ireland on the eve of the Great Irish Famine. She published
Ireland's Welcome to the Stranger, an account of her travels in 1847. She returned to Ireland in December 1846 to do what she could to relieve famine suffering-first in Dublin and then in the winter of 1847-48 in the west of Ireland where the suffering was greatest. Nicholson's precise, detailed diaries and correspondence reveal haunting insights into the desperation of victims of the Famine and the negligence and greed of those who added to the suffering. Her account of the Great Irish Famine, Annals
of the Famine in Ireland in 1847, 1848 and 1849, is both a record of her work and an indictment of official policies toward the poor: land, employment, famine relief. In addition to telling Nicholson's story, from her early life in Vermont and upstate New York to her better-known work in Ireland, Murphy puts Nicholson's own writings and other historical documents in conversation. This not only contextualizes Nicholson's life and work, but it also supplements the impersonal official records with Nicholson's more compassionate and impassioned accounts of the Irish poor.

Review
The author has brought the story of a remarkable American woman, Asenath Nicholson, to a wider audience. While the book is based on an impressive range of primary source material, it is written in such a way as to have a much wider appeal. . . . Nicholson's own writings are already mandatory reading in a number of Irish history courses in Ireland and the US, and this book will become an essential companion. (Christine Kinealy author of This Great Calamity: The Irish Famine, 1845-52)

This compelling biography offers a much needed portrait of one of the most significant commentators on Ireland before and during the Great Irish Famine; Murphy's welcome and highly entertaining study greatly advances our understanding of the political and social contexts which shaped her. (Margaret Kelleher author of Feminization of Famine)

Great book on the Irish potato famine
By B. Wolinsky
For those of you unfamiliar with the protagonist, Asenath Nicholson was a teacher from Vermont was probably the first advocate for what we now know as foreign aid. She travelled to Ireland in the 1840’s to help with famine relief, and became an advocate of assistance to the poor. The author of this book, Maureen O’Rourke Murphy, is a professor at Hofstra University in Long Island, New York, and wrote it using Nicholson’s journals, as well as historical research.

I suspected from the beginning that Asenath Nicholson was going to be the archetypical Yankee schoolteacher; independent, mannered, and with a disdain for most upper-class ways. She was from Vermont (the same state that bred Calvin Coolidge). After living in New York, and joining various anti-slavery causes, she sailed to Ireland in the 1840’s. While her work (and the book’s historical additions) make it clear that she did have a genuine concern for Ireland’s poor, I also have to wonder if her travels were a bit like “slumming” in the wrong part of town. Like George Orwell sixty years later, she saw the poverty firsthand, and gave unbiased accounts, but she was also very judgmental in her observations. She didn’t like the beggars she saw in Ireland, describing them as “pests” who’d lost their self-respect.

This is a great book for anyone studying Irish history. It shows how the Irish potato famine had a serious effect on the USA, and on the anti-slavery movement. The state of the Irish people resonated with the abolitionists, because as they saw with Ireland, you didn’t have to be of African origin to be oppressed and mistreated by the aristocracy. I also suspect that George Washington Carver had the Irish famine in mind when he advocated against the American South’s dependence on monoculture.

Marvelous and wonderful
By Voves
I discovered Asenath Nicholson 's books last year while researching Irish history of the era...to say her testament is unique and totally unexpected is the least one can say! The beauty part is Nicholson went to Ireland twice. Once before the Hunger and then during...so her experience is even more usually. Nicholson heard a call to go before the Hunger and so could compare before with after.

One gets to like this hardy Yankee from the start. She's unstoppable. She has great heart and she writes a heck of a page turner.. This is like finding a diary on the moon...a Yankee lady tramping in Ireland in the 1840's? ! A novelist would not dare to invent her! How fortunate we are to have Asenath Nicholson's books!

Nicholson's interest in the Irish went back further to her VT childhood. An early group of Irish people were her area way before the great waves that came later in the century. Today's wave of refuges remind one of those earlier Irish droves. My Irish decent friends complain about today's group ..how funny...the exact same things were said about our ancestors 170 years ago ( I'm mostly Irish myself ) Her father taught Asenath Nicholson to treat the Irish like human beings...a most enlightened man for his time and ours .

In her later life, Nicholson kept a boarding house in NYC along the lines of the diet crafted by Presbyterian minister, Sylvester Graham. The idea was bland food would curb sexual urges... So Nicholson had more than the Bible to preach ! lol .

Nicholson employed Irish maids at the boarding house as they were now starting to appear in the US in greater numbers, particularly in large cities. In mid-life Nicholson became fired up to finally go see Ireland for herself and to bring the Bible those suffering in Roman darkness ( as she might say ) Of course the Irish love a good story and her fireside Bible readings were popular. Her marriage seemed to be one of connivance , however without that " Mrs " part of her name Nicholson could hardly take to the road alone. " Mrs" said something back then. It was a badge.

Since Nicholson was there before the Famine , she understandably felt compelled to return to help and see things for herself. She had to watch out even more for the local Priest and landowners as she tramped about the 2nd time.

Photography was just becoming available at this time, but even so it would not be likely the powers that be would want the Hunger so documented . I doubt anyone who could afford a camera then would have dreamed of it. Consequently we have only drawings of its victims. But if we had photos of the starving Irish of the 1840's they would look every bit as ghastly as the photos of the Civil War POW camp Andersonville victims and the vastly more WW2 Holocaust victims later. When one reads accounts of those suffering the Hunger , they could be describing these later photos . Living skeletons

Now we come to the author, Maureen O'Rourke Murphy part

Early on a professor asked Murphy if she had ever heard of Asenath Nicholson ? No. Well the effect of the meeting was like a thunder bolt for Murphy and she gained a life long interest. Nicholson is more than a subject to Murphy, she became a friend.

How lucky for Asenath Nicholson and we readers as well that Nicholson beguiled such an able historian as Murphy to tell her story ! Without Murphy's book much history imo would be lost. I'm glad someone stood up for Asenath to tell her history. However Murphy does not simply tell us of Nicholson , but of her era. Murphy greatly expands our knowledge of those Nichlson met along the way. And so Murphy also expands our knowledge of the US pre civil war reform movement ( which often gets put in the shade because of events later in the century ) besides a rare , on the ground report of the Hunger...
I loved the footnotes

MARVELOUS!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book

Thank you Asenath Nicholson and thank you Maureen O'Rourke Murphy

The Irish Brotherhood: John F. Kennedy, His Inner Circle, and the Improbable Rise to the Presidency, by Helen O'Donnell

The Irish Brotherhood is the history of Jack Kennedy’s original political inner circle. Led by Bobby Kennedy, Kenny O’Donnell, Larry O’Brien, and Dave Powers they were tough minded, Irish-Catholic guys who were joined together by a common ambition to see Jack Kennedy through to the White House. War veterans who were young, ambitious, and they wanted their country back. Jack Kennedy was their man, their leader. No matter that he was Irish, Catholic, and his “Old Man” had made as many enemies as friends – Jack had ambition, brains, a special charisma. To win the White House would be a victory not only for Jack Kennedy, but for the downtrodden. They collectively decided that if the political powers would not let them in willingly then they would kick the door down. At the center of the story is Kenny O’Donnell, Jack Kennedy’s tough talking, no-bullshit, top political aide. Jack recognized he needed Kenny’s blue collar, political genius and Kenny recognized something special in Jack.

The Irish Brotherhood describes what it was like to be inside the Kennedy inner circle. With Bobby, who was determined to make his own mark apart from his famous family, his life-long struggle, never won, never lost. With Joe, as Kenny and Larry prove to him that their outsider approach was going to work after Jack’s crushing victory in ’58, which sets the stage for the Presidential campaign to come. This book is a missing piece of the story of the improbable rise to power of John F. Kennedy and further fills out the picture of the man revealing that Jack Kennedy was at heart a politician. He enjoyed the rough and tumble and despite his personal issues, or perhaps because of them, he became determined to succeed beyond anybody’s expectations. It is intriguing an indelible portrait of the son, brother, friend, Congressman, Senator and President.

ONE OF THE GREATEST POLITICAL STORIES EVER TOLD - SEEMINGLY IMPROBABLE, BUT TRUE
By KOMET
This is the best book that I've read that makes plain how it was that John F. Kennedy, with the help of a dedicated, loyal and hard-working group of young men later known as "the Irish Brotherhood" (many of them, like himself, veterans of the Second World War) --- among others --- managed to establish, at times against heavy odds, one of the most remarkable political careers in American history that took him from the House of Representatives in 1946 to the White House in 1960.

One of the best attributes of this book is that it reads a lot like an epic novel. The many personalities who fill its pages come alive in bold, bright colors. The story begins in a Chicago bar shortly after JFK's failed bid to secure the vice-president slot with the Democratic candidate for President, Adlai Stevenson, in 1956. Kenneth "Kenny" O'Donnell (the author's father, who, at that time was JFK's "tough-talking , no bulls***, political aide") is savoring a beer while coming to terms with this setback in Kennedy's political career. "...the entire week --- had ended up with a loss. They got screwed. Thrown under the bus by the Democratic Party establishment, especially by the liberals, who had never liked Jack or his father. ... Adlai Stevenson, making his second run for the Democratic presidential nomination, along with Senator Carey Estes Kefauver, crime-fighting liberal from Tennessee, and the rest of the political establishment --- led the charge against the Kennedy brothers. They were men who saw Jack Kennedy and his Irish buddies as impossibly young, inexperienced, and arrogant. John F. Kennedy was, after all, the son of Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy, a man who was loved by some but reviled by even more. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, or Jack, as his family called him, was the [second] child of Joe and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy of Boston. When their firstborn son, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., died tragically, a hero in the war, it supposedly fell to second son Jack to pick up the fallen standard. Or so the story had been told around Boston."

Then, after the reader is given access to some of Kenny's O'Donnell's background (like JFK, a Massachusetts native, but from humbler working-class origins, who joined the U.S. Army Air Force at 17, saw action in Europe - where he was twice shot down over enemy territory and managed to make his way back both times to the Allied lines), the clock is rolled back to the 1945-46 school year at Harvard. Thanks to the GI Bill of Rights, Kenny has secured a place there, where he becomes renowned for his athletic prowess on the football field, becoming captain of the team. Here is where Kenny would have a fateful meeting with destiny when he met Robert ("Bobby") Kennedy. "Bobby had wanted to join the squad. He was then too small, a marginally talented athlete, but made up for it with sheer determination." Both men hit it off instantly and talked often about football and politics, subjects for which they shared a passion. For a time both Bobby and Kenny were roommates. It was Bobby who would introduce Kenny to his older brother John. JFK and Kenny didn't really hit it off at first. (Indeed, it would be a few more years before both men became fully comfortable with each other and developed a virtually unspoken bond of mutual trust and respect.)

Kennedy, not long out of the Navy, was set on running for Congress. But despite his father's wealth and longstanding political connections in Massachusetts, he wasn't regarded as a serious candidate for a solidly working-class district that looked down on people of his class. Notwithstanding that, Kennedy was determined to do his best to win and to that end, he slowly built up a coterie of dedicated people (including Kenny) who canvassed the district door-by-door and made the personal connections that would give him much needed visibility.

JFK would go on to win election to the House and maintain his seat until 1952, when he decided to run for the U.S. Senate against Republican Henry Cabot Lodge, who hailed from a powerful political family and was regarded as unbeatable. The state Democratic Party didn't take him seriously and when on Election Night --- Eisenhower was swept into the White House, carrying on his coattails large numbers of Republicans elected to Congress --- it looked as if JFK would lose, pressure was put on him by party leaders in the state to concede. But he wouldn't, because a majority of the votes had yet to be counted and he had confidence in the work Kenny and others had made over many months in setting up a statewide political network. Sure enough, in the wee hours of the morning, Kennedy would prevail over Lodge, one of the few bright spots in the fortunes of the Democratic Party in 1952.

Helen O'Donnell, who throughout the book, made judicious use of a series of taped interviews her father had with the journalist Sander Vanocur (who covered the Kennedy White House for NBC) in 1965 and 1966 --- in addition to oral histories from politicians (e.g. Hubert Humphrey who ran against JFK during the 1960 Democratic primaries) and people who worked closely with her father and President Kennedy, as well as interviews she carried out herself with her father's surviving siblings (who played parts in many Kennedy campaigns), Senator Edward Kennedy, Sander Vanocur, and Ben Bradlee (formerly Head Editor of The Washington Post) --- deserves full praise for a thoroughly engaging, poignant, and wonderful book.

Not too many people know that, while in the Senate, JFK's chronic back problems had become so severe that he had two surgeries on his spine in 1954. Complications set in and his temperature had gone up to 105 degrees F. Up to this time, Kenny had no idea of the various health problems with which JFK was afflicted. Only gradually, as he earned JFK's full trust and that of the Kennedy Family, would these details be shared with him. Twice the Catholic Church had administered JFK the last rites. Many in the Democratic Party reckoned that even were he to survive, JFK would emerge a cripple and much diminished in terms of his political prospects. Some in the Party leadership expected that his time in the Senate would be short-lived. This, for me, was one of the most touching chapters of the book. The reader will see a John F. Kennedy who seemed finished, at a very low ebb, who somehow, after a slow recovery, finds anew his passion for politics and public service and, like the phoenix, comes back stronger.

To sum up, I want to cite the high regard in which President Kennedy held his chief political aide and close friend: “I never doubt Kenny. His loyalty to me is absolute. I trust him completely. We may disagree at times over politics or people. He is not always right, nor am I. But I always know he has my back and always will. He always calls it like he sees it. I appreciate that.”

There is truth in every page, which makes this book easy to read and believe.
By Robert E. Dennis
There are a million books about the Kennedys, most are just not worth the price. Here is an acception. This book written by Helen O'Donnell, based on recorded tapes provided by Kenny O'Donnell before his death, provide an interesting insight into the everyday lives of a politician and his politics. It reads well as there is truth in every page, not scandal or salacious stories, in some cases hesitancy to believe and observation
of fact, and a surprising take on Old Joe Kennedy. I enjoyed this book as it was comfortable, informative and not the least bit over bearing. If you enjoy politics, Kennedys, or history you're sure yo enjoy this book. I am hoping that there is a follow up to this volume, and if there is it will be one of the few time I will have preordered a book, with the anticipation of seeing an old friend in a casual manner.

This story gave me a new view of JFK from a political perspective. Now I am hungry for more, going to start on her book that she wrote on her father and Robert Kennedy. I like how the book was not Just about Kennedy you get an birds eye view of those Kennedy had surrounding him. If your looking to read another JFK book I highly recommend this one.

Deliver Us: Three Decades of Murder and Redemption in the Infamous I-45/Texas Killing Fields, by Kathryn Casey

Critically acclaimed author Kathryn Casey delivers a riveting account of the brutal murders of young women in the I-45/Texas Killing Fields—a chilling true story that has already helped police uncover evidence that may link suspected serial killer William Lewis Reece to some of the heinous crimes

Over a three-decade span, more than twenty women—many teenagers—died mysteriously in the small towns bordering Interstate 45, a fifty-mile stretch of highway running from Houston to Galveston. The victims were strangled, shot, or savagely beaten. Six met their demise in pairs. They had one thing in common: being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The day she vanished, Colette Wilson waited for her mother after band practice. Best friends Debbie Ackerman and Maria Johnson loved to surf and were last seen hitchhiking. Laura Kate Smither dreamed of becoming a ballerina and disappeared just weeks before her thirteenth birthday.

In this harrowing true crime exposition, award-winning journalist Kathryn Casey tracks these tragic cases, investigates the evidence, interviews the suspects, and pulls back the cloak of secrecy in search of elusive answers.

The Perfect Book
By Zachary H. Bissonnette
Kathryn Casey is one of those rare writers who really does get better with each book and with her last few books, she's firmly established herself as the best true crime writer in the world.

Her research and reporting are spectacularly through and solid, and she writes vividly without running into the sort of fictionalization problem that plagues so many true crime books: It's all true and based on real reporting.

Without giving too much away, I'll just say that the scope of this book is much, much more ambitious than the typical true crime book--which usually focuses on one or a few victims and then a killer who is reasonably obvious from the beginning because there are no other suspects. This complexity is part of what makes this book so smart and so good: It really does work as a book.

Anyway: Kathryn Casey is the best true crime writer going, and this is her at the height of her power. How can you resist?!??!?!

Read It In A Day
By Eden.M
And wished there was more. Everything you have come to expect from Kathryn Casey, is in this book, heartbreaking exploration into the disappearances & murders of mostly young teenagers along the 1-45 or the more commonly known, Texas Killing Fields. Spread over 3 decades the book covers more than one crime, or killer, and tries it's best to give some sense of ending to the cases, although it's not always possible. The way the police dealt with missing children back then is repugnant and I hope times have changed, though I doubt it in some places and cases. I loved the high definition photos, wonderful with a kindle when so many you see in some are blurred shapes, not in this book, great photos, that bring to life, the lives that were taken. If you like true crime, you don't need a review, just buy this book, you will not be disappointed.

Intriguing, gut-wrenching, frightening
By Jan
Ms. Casey dedicates her book to "all the lost boys and girls". Thanks to this book, many of those lost have been brought back to life, their stories told with compassion and consideration. It is obvious, when reading the book, how much research went into creating the final product, up to and including, interviewing psychopaths. I read this book in two sittings, unable to put it down. Intriguing, gut-wrenching, frightening. Very good job.

**New York Times Best Selling Memoir**

Nominated for the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction, the Sarton Memoir Award and the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award for Autobiographies and Memoirs

Can an epic adventure succeed without a hero? Andra Watkins needed a wingman to help her become one of the only living persons to walk the historic 444-mile Natchez Trace as the pioneers did. She planned to walk fifteen miles a day. For thirty-four days. After striking-out with everyone in her life, she was left with her disinterested eighty-year-old father. And his gas. The sleep apnea machine and self-scratching. Sharing a bathroom with a man whose gut obliterated his aim. As Watkins trudged America's forgotten highway, she lost herself in despair and pain. Nothing happened according to plan, and her tenuous connection to her father started to unravel. Through arguments and laughter, tears and fried chicken, they fought to rebuild their relationship before it was too late. In Not Without My Father: One Woman's 444-Mile Walk of the Natchez Trace, Watkins invites readers to join her dysfunctional family adventure in a humorous and heartbreaking memoir that asks if one can really turn 'I wish I had' into 'I'm glad I did.'

Not without her father...
By Story Circle Book Reviews
Cheryl Strayed walked the Pacific Crest Trail and wrote about it in Wild. Bill Bryson walked the Appalachian Trail and wrote about it in A Walk in the Woods. Their stories of sore feet and adventures have little in common, however, with Andra Watkins who walked the Natchez Trace and wrote about it in Not Without My Father. That's because the 444-mile Natchez Trace, once America's premiere foot path walked by such historical figures as Daniel Boone, is not a trail. It's a scenic byway for motorized vehicles stretching from Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee.

And Andra Watkins isn't a devoted hiker. She walked the remnants of the old footpath to publicize her book: To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis. The quirky premise of that book, published in March, 2014, involves the ghost of Meriwether Lewis trying to redeem himself for his own unresolved death. Lewis, best known for his participation in the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806, died in 1809 at the age of 35 while traveling on the Natchez Trace. Whether his death was suicide or murder continues to be debated by historians.

The title for Watkins' book comes from the fact that she was accompanied on the walk by her father. Each day he dropped her off where she had finished the day before and picked her up at the end of her daily 15-mile tormented walk, which never got easier. While readers of this book will learn something of the Trace's historic past, they will learn more about a troubled relationship between a daughter and her father—and where this journey takes them. Not Without my Father is more about relationships and coming to know one's self than it is a travelogue. It's a story that is real, with all the grit of growing up in a household that had little resemblance to the Beaver's world of June and Ward Cleaver.

This is a book without traditional heroes, but one in which you'll find yourself rooting for the non-heroes who struggle to give meaning to their lives, the daughter by walking and the father by selling his daughter's books along the way. Both finally have the time to explore and try to overcome memories of bad times in their relationship, and both realize the time remaining to mend their ways is short.

Did Andra really walk beside a highway the entire Natchez Trace? Did she and her father come to better understand each other? I'm not going to answer those questions. You'll have to read the book and find out for yourself. I'll just say that it won't be a waste of your time.

Make a Memory With this Memoir as your Guide
By K. Piccini
Don’t you love when a memoir engages and entertains you as much as fiction? Aren't you enthralled when a writer can take you along on their journey and allow you to experience their range of emotions while you are simply reading their words?

I am; which is why when I was given the chance to read an advanced copy of “Not Without My Father” chronicling Andra’s walk of the Natchez Trail I found myself horrified, humbled and honored from one moment to the next. While the walk itself would clamor to be the central character it ends up being the voices of Watkins, her dad, her best friend, her mom and her husband that set the scene and tell the story.

A story that starts much earlier than the first sign post on the Trace and ends long after she has limped past the last to finish her walk into self-salvation.

Told mostly from the point of view of Andra some of my favorite chapters were those where her father Roy interjects his own thoughts and memories with the air of a man who knows how powerful words and stories can be. In is within those chapters that you come to see where Andra got her determined, stubborn and hopeful spirit. With every anecdote sprinkled among the stories of his daughter was telling us of blistered feet, self doubt and redemption Roy proved that we, as human beings, become the sum of the stories we tell and are told.

Who hasn't reached mid-life and not questioned their place in the world, their relationship with their parents and the next chapter to their own story?

This, at its heart, is the beauty of Watkin’s book.

I felt changed and most importantly, moved, by her story. I called my own mother eager to recount our own memories, I told my husband the narratives that shaped the life of my deceased father and I felt the tug of the family bind, the blood ties. For there is humor and disgust, kindness and exasperation in every family history and “Not Without My Father” shies from none of it, instead it invites you on the walk complete with a soundtrack fit for a journey to the center of family, self and acceptance.

A Great Story of Two Journeys
By James J. Kane
In early 2014 Andra Watkins walked the Natchez Trace from Mississippi to Tennessee as a way of promoting her first novel To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis (Wordhermit Press).

Many people, including this reviewer of that book, followed Andra along her journey as she posted daily video blog posts about that promotional journey. What many of us did not know was the unfolding “behind the scenes” story with her father and mother as she walked.

Not Without My Father is that story.

And what a story it is!

Written in a very engaging style with both actual personal thoughts from Andra’s dad as well as snatches of her conversations with him, Not Without My Father is a great contemporary memoir in which two adults seek to re-develop (and perhaps re-negotiate it as well) their relationship from child and parent to two adults. Her journey, and Roy’s (her dad) becomes more than a promotional tour. It truly becomes a journey of reconciliation and hope as well.

I am grateful for this book primarily because I think that it gives us a glimpse into a writer’s back story that is often unknown until years later, if ever. But I also like it very much because it reminds us that family is oh so important.

I rate this book a ‘great’ read.

Note: I reviewed an ARC of this book via the author without an expectation of a positive review.

The bestselling autobiography of the greatest rugby player of our time: Brian O'Driscoll.

Since 1999, when he made his international debut, there has been no greater player in world rugby than Brian O'Driscoll. In 2010 Rugby World magazine named him its world player of the decade - and since then the legend has only grown.

Honest, gritty and thoughtful, Brian O'Driscoll's Autobiography is not just an essential sports book. It is an essential book about family, friends, hard work, courage and imagination.

An Easy Test
By JohnCarr
I assume that the vast majority of potential readers of “The Test” will know who Brian O’Driscoll is and what he achieved. If you don’t he’s simply one of the greatest ruby players who ever lived.
He begins with an account of his last game for Leinster, the victory in the 2014 Pro12 Grand Final where he had to go off early after injury. He then goes back to his childhood and works forward in chronological fashion to what I suspect was for him his “real” last game, the win for Ireland in France to seal the Six Nations Championship.
For most of the book I thought that the play that would receive most analysis was his account of how he engineered his first meeting with his future wife but as he recounts in vivid detail those final few minutes in Paris as we – I’m Irish – hung on for dear life it was like being in front of the TV with the outcome still in doubt.
A recurring criticism amongst who have given the book a low rating is that it is boring, that it lacks revelations or recriminations.
Well, may I ask what you expected to see in a Brian O’Driscoll autobiography? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically...?
It’s a bit like criticising a vegetarian cookbook for its lack of meat recipes.
What controversies are there to cover? Him being on the receiving end of that spear tackle? Him being dropped for the one and only time in a 15 year career? An opposing team’s ineffectually cheating in “Bloodgate”? The treatment he received at the hands of England in the Grand Slam year? (I was at that match and how he picked himself up time and again I do not know). He covers them all with the class we’ve rightly come to expect of him.
This is a guy with an extraordinary talent who comes from a good family, who married the only girlfriend he ever lived with, who never changed clubs and who never seems to have had a major falling out with a coach or teammate.
The two main revelations in the book are non-rugby related, how he was affected by the unexplained suicide of a close friend and how he spent a night in custody in New York when, needless to say, he’d done nothing wrong.
The book has an index that comes in handy and avoids the need for a glossary of nicknames with such entries as “’Dreamboat’ see Kearney, Dave”.
How to rate the book? Unlike the man himself it’s no five star masterpiece. Through no fault of his own his life lacks “Sturm und Drang”. If I’d no interest in rugby but had been asked to review the book I’d have given it a three. But for fifteen years I, like millions of others, had the pleasure of watching a sporting genius with the heart of a lion, a nice guy who finished first more often than not but who, whether he met with triumph or disaster, treated those two imposters just the same.

Champion
By Pauline Cunningham
A thoroughly good read which shows Brian in his true form... a dedicated, determined, tough, selfless team player who has given new meaning to the word legend. It has been an honour to watch him with Leinster, Ireland and The Lions and to have witnessed his undisputed and unmatched skills over the years. In this book he details many of his major and some minor matches. He was a worldclass captain admired and feared in equal measure on match day by his opponents and whilst some did their best or should I say their worst to take him out of the game he doesn't badmouth or rant over these incidents. He comes across as very decent, unassuming and respectful...a true example to every young person starting out in life....sporting or otherwise ......Pauline (Cavan)
