The trapped woman is running out of time — and air. Should DeVault wait for backup? Or take a big chance and go inside the burning house to search for her — alone? What would you do? The action doesn’t stop there. It’s just beginning. Nationwide, experts predict we may soon have no volunteers in some parts of the country. “Sooner or later, somebody’s going to dial 911 … and the 911 center is going to dispatch a fire department, and nobody’s going to show up. That’s where we’re headed, Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Edward A. Mann testified before the state legislature in 2014. “The volunteer emergency services … is a tradition in danger of weakening and possibly even dying out,” the United States Fire Administration (USFA) reported back in 2004. “Many fire departments across the nation today are experiencing more difficulty with recruiting and retaining members than ever before. “The causes of the problems are similar in all 50 states,” said the USFA. “No single region of the country is dealing with problems that are significantly different than those found in other regions. “Fire departments can no longer count on the children of current members following in their parent’s footsteps. Nor can they count on a continuous stream of community people eager to donate their time and energy to their local volunteer fire department. Adding to the problem, departments cannot rely on members staying active in the volunteer fire service for long periods of time,” the USFA concluded. That should scare us all, because in 2014, fully 69 percent of our firefighters — seven out of every 10 firefighters — were volunteers. Together, they save American taxpayers an estimated $139.8 billion a year, not to mention countless lives. “Fire Call!” explains why, what it’s really like to be a volunteer firefighter, and what each and every one of us can do to help save our vanishing volunteers. The author has pledged a portion of the proceeds from “Fire Call!” to benefit volunteer firefighters around the country.

About the Author
“Fire Call!” author George DeVault is an award-winning journalist, who responded to more than 5,000 fire calls over 30 years as a volunteer firefighter. Born and raised in central Ohio, DeVault spent half his working life covering breaking news in Ohio and South Florida. While a freshman in high school, he started work at age 15 as a photographer for his hometown newspaper, The Delaware Gazette. He then worked as night police reporter and labor writer for The Columbus Dispatch, and later became assistant city editor at The Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel in Florida. In 1981, he moved his young family to Emmaus, Pennsylvania, where he was executive editor/publisher of Rodale Press’ national organic farm magazine, The New Farm. To make more friends in his new hometown — and give something back to the community — he joined the Emmaus Fire Department. He rose through the ranks to become deputy fire chief, and later fire chief in the neighboring rural township where he lives. He is nationally certified as Firefighter I & II, Fire Officer I & II, and Fire Instructor I. DeVault was a farm magazine and book editor/publisher at Rodale Inc. for 25 years. Special assistant to the late Chairman Robert Rodale, DeVault was editor, then general director of Rodale’s Russian-American joint venture, living with his family in Moscow, Russia, in 1993-1994. DeVault has written widely for publications such as Successful Farming, Farm Journal, Top Producer, Mother Earth News, and Organic Gardening. He has edited or published six books including “How to Make $100,000 Farming 25 Acres,” “Backyard Market Gardening,” “Truckpatch” and “Return to Pleasant Valley,” a revival of the works of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield. He has received professional honors from groups as diverse as MagazineWeek, American Chiropractic Association, and North American Agricultural Journalists. In 2002, he was named a Food and Society Policy Fellow in a program funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. He was honored locally in 2004 as Conservation Farmer of the Year. DeVault was executive director and president of Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah, Iowa (2008-2010). In 2011, DeVault was elected to a 6-year term as township supervisor in Pennsylvania. DeVault lives on a small farm near Emmaus where he and his wife, Melanie, raise organic vegetables, flowers, blueberries, herbs and pastured pork. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

What an amazing and insightful read

What an amazing and insightful read! I could barely put it down... if you've ever wondered what it's like to be the one running into the fire, here's your chance. Not only does the author offer up his most exciting and heartbreaking stories, he also shares carefully chosen info. and shares the dire status of our nation's volunteer firefighters. This book will make you want to help -- either by jumping on the nearest fire truck, donating time or just spreading the word -- George DeVault and his vivid storytelling skills make you realize how crucial our firefighters are.

You'll feel like you are riding along on that Fire Call! A great read!

This is a great read with a masterful mix of a little history, a little trivia, lots of super photos, and plenty of action! The amazing, true accountings of the fire and rescue calls the author experienced first hand are presented in short story style, being concise, fast moving and holds you in the action up to the very end. Each story leaves you wanting more, and sometimes in tears! George DeVault skillfully combines his overwhelming passion for his life as a volunteer fire fighter with his impeccable writing style to capture the essence of the brave men and women who are our first responders. To think, that in many communities, these risks and sacrifices are made on our behalf by VOLUNTEERS is humbling. Thank you, George DeVault, for not only your service, but for opening our eyes through your informative and entertaining style of writing.

As a member of the ( non-union side) Emmaus Fire Dept., this book took me back over my 15yrs of service and then some..A book very well written. Gripping from one pager alert to the next, and truthful..I remember when George ran with us, as well The Vera Cruz Fire Dept. and both our Depts, were so very greatfull for having him on board, and his work in Rodale, for I worked there also. His caring and compassion for the Fire Service was 2nd to None...I can't wait for and hope for a 2nd book..Much respect to this man and his fire and farming knowledge. The work details I was on on the weekends to get the Fire Dept Training Grounds in near perfect condition, so that it was used for FF1 and FF2 testing, then helped Chief Benner with the paper work for that., getting it ready for the 1st ever flashover containment building., all that was done on a points system. Truth be said about the Volunteer Fire Companies. Thank You George
