Presented in three volumes, this exquisitely narrated memoir, in turns intensely personal and broadly nationalistic and international, completes a trilogy of autobiographies—My Command, Not My Will, and My Watch—told by this sojourner of Nigerian and world history.

I liked the book

I liked the book, however I got the kindle version and there were aspects of some parts of it that I felt were altered as it did not seem like the words of a Nigerian elder. Certain things just dropped in that really were not relevant and seemed to be promoting some agenda. If I am wrong it portrays a Nigeria that has vastly changed but even if so the way the information was disclosed leads me to believe it was not totally the words of this Nigerian elder!

An extremely interesting book on the life and history of this great man. It truly made me appreciate him a lot more. By taking the time to take us through the journey of his life, you cant but fall in love with him. I honestly think President Obasanjo is one of the greatest African writers in history with his extreme detail in documenting and explaining the what, where , why and whos. Highly recommended.

A necessary - and very enjoyable! - read on South Sudan

I almost never write reviews, but everyone should read this book if they have any interest in South Sudan. It is both extremely nuanced and quite accessible, and does a fantastic job of highlighting South Sudanese perspectives and voices, which are far too often ignored or marginalized in official (usually Westerner-written) accounts of South Sudan. I research South Sudan for a living, so you might think I'm more likely to enjoy this book than most people, but I think the opposite it true - I think about the place all day, so it takes a LOT to make me want to read a book about it in my free time. This book is meticulously researched and beautifully written. A must-read.

My father fought for 5 years because he was drafted !!!
I am reading as much as I can on the EASTERN FRONT.and Degrelle certainly saw a lot of action.
To be truthful I had no idea what a WALoon was or is.
DEgrelle certainly has a talent for writing and its good to know what was going on then in the enemys mind.
Truth be told the Western Front was almost a sideshow and the main efforts were in RUssia.My father knew this and said without the Russian effort Germany would have won.

About the Author
Bruce Rubenstein has published hundreds of true crime stories in weeklies and monthly magazines. In 1991 he received the Chicago Bar Association’s Herman Kogan Media Award for his Chicago Magazine article about the conviction of four Mexican immigrants for a quadruple homicide (dubbed “The Milwaukee Avenue Massacre” by the Sun Times) that they did not commit. They were serving the 9th year of their sentences of life without the possibility of parole when his article came out. As a result of his article the Governor  of Illinois pardoned them. An anthology of his crime stories, titled “Greed Rage and Love Gone Wrong”, was published by the University Of Minnesota Press in 2004. He won the Minnesota State Arts Council award for fiction in 1979, and published short stories in little magazines in the 70s and 80s. His story, “Smoke got In My eyes”, written for the Akashic Books’ anthology, Twin Cities Noir (2006), was nominated for the Shamus Award. His fiction has recently appeared in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine. His book about a notorious art theft titled “The Rockwell Heist” was published by Borealis in March 2013.

A Truly Fine Collection of True Crime Stories

“The Family That Couldn’t Sleep At Night” is a fascinating collection of True Crime stories written by Bruce Rubenstein, a seasoned veteran of the genre. The author ran with and observed thugs, addicts, gang members and crime-minded miscreants since his teenage years. He has a direct, open, no extra bulls*** style and spares absolutely no effort in his research. I was struck by the colorful and varied names and monikers of the real people in his stories: Quakenbush, Zipp, Scalzetti, Cabeza, Cindy Pluff, Dog Man, Choo Choo Johson and Chester Z.
Most of these “...True Stories of Murder and Mayhem”, take place in the North Country of Minnesota, Wisconson and a couple of neighboring states. Each tale begins with a helpful paragraph introducing the story. The title story “Family That Couldn’t Sleep at Night”, is about 3 brothers that make up The O’Kasick Gang, who shoot two Minneapolis policeman, killing one and gravely injuring the other. The hunt for the killers by the authorities is complex, lengthy and a sensation in the region.
The son of a well known millionaire poet/artist in “Danny’s Boat” is the victim of a gripping, twisted tale when he is murdered by the crewmen he hired for his yacht to take an impulsive voyage. The story takes detectives and then Rubenstein from Minneapolis to many cities and countries in this tragic story.
“Key Man” is the story of the murder of a Minneapolis wholesale florist that destroys a family, displaying for the reader, The Good – Det. William Quinn of Minneapolis PD; The Bad – an unknown killer; The Ugly – Det. Russell Krueger, also of MPD, a heavy-handed brute who hung out with gangsters and took over as lead detective in the case.
In the autobiographical “Notes On My Sources” Rubenstein tells his own excellent and moving tale of woe, when he took a 3-plus year vocational training course in Writing About Crime and Criminals in Sandstone Federal Prison without intending to.

And I was not disappointed. He always gets to the heart of the story and paints the criminals—most of whom he got to know—with a vivid paintbrush. If you like true crime, don’t miss this one.

Great True Crime Read

I love reading true crime, and this anthology of true crime reporting from Bruce Rubenstein is one of the most entertaining books I’ve come across. Each story has a different tone. And these colorful criminals are memorable, if for the wrong reasons. Great true crime read.

True Life Crime

This book includes some of the most horrific cases worldwide; cases of people in positions of trust who have betrayed that trust by murdering the people in their care. Included by Australian author Emily Webb (a journalist) is the recent case (2011) of the Sydney nurse who set fire to the nursing home where he worked, just to cover his stealing of drugs. Eleven elderly residents died in this horrific event; the disgust at his actions is intense.

But two of the worst atrocities in my mind were of one Genene Jones who is one of the most prolific child killers in the history of the United States. She is suspected of being responsible for the deaths of almost fifty children; murders she committed while working as a nurse in several different healthcare institutions.

The other was the notorious Harold Shipman who has the dubious honour of being Britain’s worst serial killer, suspected of murdering over two hundred of his patients. Over a period of many years, this trusted and much-loved physician betrayed the trust of his patients time and time again using lethal doses of morphine to murder his victims. His complacency was his downfall though…

The main thread I picked up through most of these terrible stories is the ease of how the nurses and doctors committed the murders; and the failure of hospital and healthcare management to investigate when suspicions were aroused. Even to the point of sacking other nurses who voiced their concerns.

I found I couldn’t read the book all at once because of the subject matter – but in spite of that the author has produced an extremely well-researched look at the true crime serial killers of the medical world. I have no hesitation in recommending Angels of Death to people who enjoy reading true crime.

About the Author
Nicholas Carah is a Lecturer in Communication at the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland.

His research examines the interplay between media technologies, brands and everyday life. In particular, he has focussed on how media technologies are used to promote, perform and regulate alcohol consumption. Together with The Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education he has published research on the use of Facebook by alcohol brands in Australia. He has also worked with the social change start up Hello Sunday Morning to design and evaluate their use of social and mobile media technologies to change drinking cultures.

Carah’s research has been published in New Media and Society, Television and New Media, Convergence, Consumption, Markets and Culture, Mobile Communication and Culture, Health and Journal of Public Affairs. His 2014 article ‘Brand value’ was awarded best paper in Consumption, Markets and Culture.

He is the author of Pop Brands: branding, popular music and young people (Peter Lang, 2010) and Media and Society: production, content and participation (SAGE, 2015) and the forthcoming Brand Machines, Sensory Media and Calculative Culture (Palgrave). 

Eric Louw, School of Communication & Arts, University of Queensland, previously worked for a number of South African universities (University of South Africa, University of Natal and Rand Afrikaans University), and ran a NGO engaged in development work.

His books include: Media and Society: production, content and participation (SAGE, 2015), The Media and Political Process (SAGE, 2010), The Media and Cultural Production (SAGE, 2001), The Roots of the Pax Americana (MUP, 2010), New Voices Over the Air: The Transformation of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (Hampton Press, 2010), South African Media Policy (1995), and The Rise, Fall and Legacy of Apartheid (Praeger, 2005).

Louw has published widely in the fields of political communication, South African media and South African political discourse.  His current research is focusing on the transformation of South Africa.

A wonderful book. Highly recommend this book

A wonderful book. Highly recommend this book, it is quite timely. Ms. Berrigan is a great writer, the books flows along. Before I knew it I was half-way done with the book. Ms. Berrigan comes from one of America's most important and influential activist families. She continues the legacy to this day with her own activism. She is now a Mother and wife and learning how to pass on those values to her family and friends. This book is a solid balancing act of her parents' history of activism and activism happening today in the USA (which is ongoing today with her Mother Elizabeth who is alive and kicking it at Jonah House in Baltimore). Frida's book is also quite funny and witty, despite the serious topic. Can't say enough good things.

An honest account of aware parenting

This brief book, essentially a selection of short essays about Berrigan's upbringing as the daughter of the Catholic peace activists Phillip Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister and her own experiences as a mother attempting to raise conscientious children in a violent world, is both moving and identifiable. The author is frank about the challenges of being a member of a sort of royal family of the counterculture and on growing up with parents who were often off at protests or locked in jail, and on finding her own identity and values while honoring those of her parents.

Berrigan's own challenges and choices as a mother will be familiar to any modern parent who does not reject society and popular culture but who also wants to make wise choices: How much television should the kids watch, if any? How do we instill awareness of the sufferings of the world when bombarded with constant messaging pushing materialism? The author's honesty about her own confusion on some of these subjects is quite refreshing.

Inspiration

I'm 76, so at times I thought this book wasn't for me, but ultimately it was a powerful reminder, beautifully written, and a hopeful example of what is possible. If you are the ultimate consumer, or fearful of germs, you will be educated. The Berrigan brothers were an inspiration to my generation, may Frida be an inspiration to hers.
