About the Author
Molly Fisk is the author of Blow-Drying a Chicken, Observations from a Working Poet, the poetry collections, The More Difficult Beauty, Listening to Winter, Terrain (co-author) and Salt Water Poems, and two audio recordings of commentary, Blow-Drying a Chicken and Using Your Turn Signal Promotes World Peace. Fisk has been awarded grants by the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and has been nominated for Poet Laureate of California. She’s currently Poet Laureate of KVMR in Nevada City and Hell’s Backbone Grill in Boulder, Utah. A Joy to Read

My wife and I were given a copy of Using Your Turn Signal. My wife started reading it first and was raving about it immediately. Then it was my turn to read it…and rave about it. We then got the author’s first book of essays, Blow-Drying a Chicken, from the library, which was just as wonderful.

In both of the author’s books of essays, the stories are sprinkled with humor and are very delightful. They also are rooted in human experiences, most or all of which we readers can identify with: joy, sadness, illness, death, insecurity, overcoming challenges, love, etc. The author is very honest in sharing things that are personal, which is part of these books’ appeal. She is wise and perceptive and through her stories shares insights about the simple things of life as well as the profound experiences that help define the remarkable person she is.

These aren’t just stories to entertain, they are stories that teach us how to live better. These two books are a joy to read.

"Using Your Turn Signal To Promote World Peace" is a delightful, touching, deeply vulnerable book about living an everyday life. the descriptions of nature and the surrounding landscape of her home were beautiful. The story about how her mother's love of beauty was tender and yet revealed that life was not often easy fro her mother. Her own stories about never marrying, being fat were vulnerable and honest. I laughed, I cried, I was angry and touched and could identify. I found her descriptions of family, home, community and self as deeply touching. I highly recommend this book.

For 25 years, Joan Lord Hall and Cliff Hall combined teaching at the University of Colorado, Boulder, with raising a variety of animals on their eight-and-a-half-acre property. Engrossing account of a beguiling way of life

When a friend gave me a copy of this book, I was initially puzzled, and wondered how well she knew me, as I had never declared an interest in rural life, in spite of my addiction to The Archers (British Radio's longest-running serial, 'an everyday story of countryfolk')! But when I opened the book, the playful wit of the List of Contents made me more hopeful, and this tone was sustained all through this account of life on a smallholding. The practicalities involved in raising animals, at the same time as maintaining academic careers, are conveyed with a lightness of touch which clearly belies the sheer hard work and dedication involved. The Halls may have been amateurs in the field of animal husbandry, but they are professional writers who gradually help the reader to understand the pleasures, as well as the griefs, involved with living with farm animals. And while the book is full of amusing anecdotes, it doesn't seek to hide the harsher realities. This book will obviously appeal to those interested in the idea of animals being reared for meat in the least exploitative way. But general readers like me will also find it enlightening and entertaining. I finished the book full of admiration for the Halls, and the way of life they created for themselves and their animals.

Enlightening and Very Funny

Joan Lord Hall, a Shakespeare scholar now retired from teaching writing and literature, has crafted a unique and very humorous memoir that features raising a variety of animals on 8-1/2 acres near Boulder, Colorado.

She began this memoir in collaboration with her late husband Cliff, who combined teaching German at the University of Colorado with his passion for raising farm animals, especially goats.

I found these animal stories fascinating in particular for the authors' keen observations on how animals have very individualized personalities--insights that are humorously and craftily documented for readers. Also the study reflects close sensitivity to the many issues surrounding the ethics of how to raise domesticated farm animals as a source of healthy food, while also treating them with compassion.

About the Author
Dr Rudolf Isler was born in Zurich in 1937. He studied history and law and was a teacher, journalist and biodynamic farmer. Since his retirement he helps in the administration of the Waldorf School in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, where he also teaches economics.

About the Author
John T. Shaw is a senior correspondent and vice president for Market News International and a contributing writer for the Washington Diplomat. He is a frequent guest on C-SPAN, where he discusses Congress, as well as on KPCC, an NPR affiliate in Los Angeles. He has also appeared on the "PBS News Hour." Shaw was a Media Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University for six years, and he speaks frequently to seminars for diplomats in Washington. He lives in Washington, DC.

Excellent, substantial book - a pleasure to read.

This is an excellent read. John Shaw has other fine books and this is his best. If you are looking for Kennedy anecdotes on Kennedy's infidelities or assassination theories, this is the wrong book. This is an insightful book that goes in depth on Kennedy's Senate years. It gives a good perspective on how Kennedy developed as a person into a solid presidential candidate and what his contributions were as a legislature and member of the Senate. The focus gives new insights - it reminds me of Band of Rivals. Having read many things about Lincoln, the perspective of that book gave me a different look and much more knowledge of the man and his career. This book does the same thing - by offering a detailed perspective on the time JFK spent in the Senate. It has substance but is not dense, it is well told and a pleasure to read.

How Kennedy became JFK

Shaw has crafted a carefully researched look at JFK's fourteen-years in Congress. He reminds us that Kennedy was not born in the White House and shows in engaging detail how his rise to the presidency was both a reflection of his unique personality and the harbinger of a new presidential politics -- for good or ill. This book is particularly suited to those who want a behind-the-scenes look at major league American politics.

A look at JFK prior to presidency

The book is an account of JFK prior to becoming president. It starts with his academic background at Harvard, continuing with his five years in the H.R. and especially his Senate term from 1953 to resignation for the presidency in 1960. He was a prolific reader of history. The book coves writing of 'While England Slept', 'Profiles in Courage' and 'The Strategy of Peace' while he was a senator.

Kennedy switched from campaigning on a platform of economic improvement for NE and Mass. to focus on national and foreign policy as he became better known as a presidential contender. It seems that his Senate main credit was the Kennedy Commission to pick the 5 greatest senators in history with resulting commission of paintings to hang in the Capitol. I found the discussions of the candidates very interesting, but that's history not a significant achievement. Most interesting is the account of Kennedy's relationship with other senators of the era. LBJ, Barry Goldwater, Mike Mansfield, Richard Russel, Hubert Humphrey, Henry 'Scoop' Jackson and Joe McCarthy are prominently cited with many more. There is an interesting account of his run for the presidency with advisors Ted Sorenson, J.K. Galbraith, W.W. Rostow, and Paul Samuelson.

In considering JFK's Senate legacy LBJ said Kennedy did little. Neither Truman nor Eisenhower was impressed. I remember Truman suggesting that he should wait longer before a presidential run. The book shows the footprint from his Senate career mostly about publicity. Shaw ends by saying that history's verdict on JFK's Senate record is high average. The book doesn't bear that out. It describes his Senate legacy as books and publicity.

The book contains interesting historical insight, although with minimal current significance.

The comparisons, both within Russia and between Russia and western Europe, are interesting and also unique, and the articles complement each other well (not always true of edited volumes). Many articles are multidisciplinary (history, law, linguistics, sociolinguistics, ethnography, cultural studies, political science); also unusual. The summaries and conclusions are well anchored theoretically. The introductory chapter puts it all in an even broader context

Papers on how certain minority languages fare in the EU and Russia and how they interact with state structures

This collection offers several papers on minority languages and peoples, mainly in Russia and the Nordic countries, as the editors come from the background of Uralic linguistics and thus the minorities they deal with are the Saami and the Uralic-speaking peoples within Russia. There are, however, papers dealing with Sakhalin Nivkh (Ekaterina Gruzdeva), Basque (Xabier Arzoz), Sorbian (Heiko F. Marten, Reeta Toivonen), and Dolgan (Florian Siegl & Michael Rießler).

The collection starts with some very general papers that feel like padding. Susanne Romaine's "The Global Extinction of Languages and Its Consequences for Cultural Diversity" repeats what has already been said in a number of general works on language death, and it offers nothing about the Russian or EU context specifically. Theodore S. Orlin's contribution explores when the loss of a language may be called a human rights violation, but again, it deals with language death in general and does not focus on Russia or the European Union. Perhaps the editors felt that such extremely general discussions of language death were needed to show why the later case studies matter, but they don't jibe with the title of the collection.

However, most of the book consists of insightful and informative discussions of specific minority languages, their outlook, and their relationship with officialdom. I was very happy to read Konstantin Zamyatin's "The Evolution of Language Ideology in Post-Soviet Russia". He manages to clarify the bundle of contradictions, disingenous rhetoric, well-meaning but ineffective support, and outright Russian-language supremacism within Russian law on minority languages. This something that I've long followed in the Middle Volga republics but could not have put so nicely into words, and I'm glad that I now have Zamyatin's paper to recommend to others interested in the subject. Indrek Jääts focuses on the Komi-Permyaks, namely the low ethnic self-esteem within the speaking community. Again, I've often witnessed this apathy or outright self-loathing among Russia's minorities, and I appreciate the clear and perceptive description that Jääts provides.

Springer sometimes has a reputation for putting out slapdash collections with little editing, but this is a fine production. The language of the non-native speakers of English is quite good (thanks in part to yours truly, who served as proofreader).

Violence and democracy may seem fundamentally incompatible, but the two have often been intimately and inextricably linked. In Ruffians, Yakuza, Nationalists, Eiko Maruko Siniawer argues that violence has been embedded in the practice of modern Japanese politics from the very inception of the country's experiment with democracy.

As soon as the parliament opened its doors in 1890, brawls, fistfights, vandalism, threats, and intimidation quickly became a fixture in Japanese politics, from campaigns and elections to legislative debates. Most of this physical force was wielded by what Siniawer calls "violence specialists": ruffians and yakuza. Their systemic and enduring political violence-in the streets, in the halls of parliament, during popular protests, and amid labor strife-ultimately compromised party politics in Japan and contributed to the rise of militarism in the 1930s.

For the post-World War II years, Siniawer illustrates how the Japanese developed a preference for money over violence as a political tool of choice. This change in tactics signaled a political shift, but not necessarily an evolution, as corruption and bribery were in some ways more insidious, exclusionary, and undemocratic than violence. Siniawer demonstrates that the practice of politics in Japan has been dangerous, chaotic, and far more violent than previously thought. Additionally, crime has been more political.

Throughout the book, Siniawer makes clear that certain yakuza groups were ideological in nature, contrary to the common understanding of organized crime as nonideological. that's why unlike Chinatowns, the Japanese Americans are CLEAN of Americanized yakuza involvement.

That's why you don't SEE the yakuza overseas but POTUS still makes a point of calling them out by name as persona non grata - they're part of the NATION STATE of JAPAN and accorded all due respect and immunity.

They use local nonJapanese OC - its the case in the Philippines, Mainland China, HONG KONG and Taiwan and that is why the ongoing anticorruption efforts by the Mainland government are probably about anti-collaborators.
