James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon, by Julie Phillips

James Tiptree, Jr. burst onto the science fiction scene in the 1970s with a series of hard-edged, provocative short stories. Hailed as a brilliant masculine writer with a deep sympathy for his female characters, he penned such classics as Houston, Houston, Do You Read? and The Women Men Don't See. For years he corresponded with Philip K. Dick, Harlan Ellison, Ursula Le Guin. No one knew his true identity. Then the cover was blown on his alter ego: A sixty-one-year-old woman named Alice Sheldon. As a child, she explored Africa with her mother. Later, made into a debutante, she eloped with one of the guests at the party. She was an artist, a chicken farmer, a World War II intelligence officer, a CIA agent, an experimental psychologist. Devoted to her second husband, she struggled with her feelings for women. In 1987, her suicide shocked friends and fans. The James Tiptree, Jr. Award was created to honor science fiction or fantasy that explores our understanding of gender. This fascinating biography by Julie Phillips, ten years in the making, is based on extensive research, exclusive interviews, and full access to Alice Sheldon's papers.

magnificent, important biography--for world, fo SF field, for women writers and readers of SF
By Jeanne Gomoll
I probably shouldn't have done any driving for a day or two after reading Julie Phillips' biography of James Tiptree, Jr./Alice Sheldon. I was too distracted with thoughts of this life, this complicated amazing person, that had suddenly elbowed itself into my own. I'll never again be able to tell that thrilling, easy story that I've told way too often -- of the woman who wrote under a man's pseudonym and who, when she decided to write under a woman's name, couldn't get published without Tiptree's recommendation. That story now feels like the gloss it is, and so much less interesting that the real one. It's a holographic biography -- At times I felt like I could freeze the action. put down the book, and walk all around this 3-dimensional, fully fleshed out person. Ali revealed slices of herself to most people, seldom letting them see more than the single persona; she was constantly disguising herself, always performing, even for herself. Readers of Julie's biography are privileged to a much wider view: sadly, a view Ali never may never have allowed herself. The room had been lit up and the photo had become a hologram, the voice had become many voices.

Perhaps the Ultimate Biography
By Guy W. Salvidge
This book is a delight. I would go so far as to say it is the best biography I have ever read (not that I've read a great number). Philips has presented an exhaustive but not exhausting account of the life of Alice B. Sheldon, aka James Tiptree Jr., aka Racconna Sheldon. This is a comprehensive work at over 400 pages of smallish print. One gets the feeling that Philips has done the job almost to perfection.

What makes this book so amazing? Firstly, the subject, Alice Sheldon, is fascinating. This is much more than a biography of a science fiction writer (although it is that too); it is a chronicle of a difficult and ultimately tragic life. It would be hard to read this book and not feel for Sheldon, who 'lived inside her body as though inside an alien artifact.' Sheldon's lack of comfort in her own body is palpable in these pages. One can sense her dis-ease. Philips presents this difficult material sympathetically, correctly asserting that Sheldon's life is indicative of the changing landscape of sexual politics in twentieth century America.

The various sections of Sheldon's life are interesting in themselves. For example, the chapters on Africa are fascinating, as is the material on Sheldon's mother, Mary Hastings Bradley (who I'd never heard of, although she was a famous writer in her day). 'Alli's' life is overshadowed by that of her successful mother, and the older woman's presence hangs over these pages. By the time we finally get to Sheldon's own writing career, more than half the book (and half her life) is over. This enables us to see the ephemeral figure of 'James Tiptree Jr.' in the context in which he was concieved.

One funny thing about this book is that Tiptree's writing career is made to seem almost like an afterthought, or a not-entirely successful experiment. This is strange because most readers of this book will come to it thinking of Tiptree as one of the greatest writers in SF history (which 'he' is). But although Tiptree garnered the Hugos and Nebulas in quick time, none of it was much comfort to Sheldon. Here, again, one can sense Sheldon's dissatisfaction with her creations. A slight criticism of this book, in my mind, is that Philips spends little time addressing the themes and ideas in the stories themselves. It is almost as though the author of the biography does not quite appreciate the value of the stories to the extent that many of Tiptree's readers do. Stories like 'A Momentary Taste of Being' and 'Her Smoke Rose Up Forever' are surely some of the greatest in the English language.

It may be that in not coming from a SF background, Philips sees Tiptree's writing in the context that Sheldon herself may have seen it in. OK I am speculating, but Sheldon was clearly not content with having written these fabulous stories. As Philips makes clear, Sheldon 'meant it' when she wrote about death again and again. The ending to this book, which deals with the circumstances of Sheldon's murder of her husband 'Ting' and then her suicide, is simply shocking. Not knowing the details of Sheldon's death in advance, I was floored by this ending. This make me realise that while a reader such as myself finds enlightenment (or even redemption) in Tiptree's fiction, Sheldon herself drew little comfort from it.

This is an essential book, not only for those interested in Tiptree's SF career, but also for anyone interested in twentieth century history. It is useful especially in regard to the history of the so-called 'sexual revolution,' which came a few decades late for Alice B. Sheldon.

Fascinating. Disturbing. You don't need to be a Tiptree fan to read this.
By Esther Schindler
I read a few stories by James Tiptree Jr., but I never went out of my way to do so. If you're wondering how much you'd get out of reading this biography if, like me, you didn't know enough to be a fan... don't worry. The book is fascinating enough on its own.

Julie Phillips did a remarkably good job of collecting the details of Alice Sheldon's life, and in presenting them in a way that brought this woman to life. Ali was interesting in her own right: independent (yet overwhelmed by her accomplished mother), creative and artistic (but somewhat directionless), willing to take risks (some foolhardy, others courageous). Some of the story is disturbing, because this woman was -- in a bunch of ways -- rather screwed up. But it's also a positive story, because she didn't let herself be a victim to her weaknesses.

What struck me particularly about Ali Sheldon's story was the woman's need to separate her identities into very different personae. After struggling with the social roles available to her, she remarkably managed to turn the prism of her personality conflicts and sexual confusion into the most creative of efforts: to create new and groundbreaking science fiction stories that, ironically enough, often dealt with "women's issues" from the outside.

Tiptree lived only in his/her writing, either as an author or as a snail-mail correspondent. (Just imagine what "he" would have done with e-mail and online forums.) Tiptree created close friendships that respected the author's desire for anonymity (though most people thought it was because he worked for the CIA or another government agency) -- raising good navel-gazing questions about how one can be close to another person and not know the most "intimate" facts about them.

And it's that issue of "identity" and "who are we, when all people know of us is what we present?" that's so compelling... even if you could care less about the science fiction literary scene.

This is an excellent book if you're intersted in SF history, and obviously if you're a fan of James Tiptree Jr.'s fiction. But it's a darned good read if your only interest is in how creative people get that way... and what it may cost them.

one is the recognition of our joy and the second is the recognition of what we ...
By Evan Kaufman
The Relevance of Kabir is a book that teaches the 'art' of living by exposing the root causes of our misery. How often do we really question our own thoughts and beliefs that create our anxiety, fears, and depression? Beliefs and ideas that may have been instilled since birth and are taken as pure facts without much justification. Todd utilizes the writings of a 15th century poet to analyze these often unquestioned beliefs about life and ourselves. Through debunking many commonly held assumptions in a very clear and logical way, this book allows one to remove the habits of mind that keep us trapped operating in a lesser capacity than is possible. These habits are so prevalent that we commonly accept them as normal through indiscriminate everyday use. Save yourself thousands of dollars on therapy, drugs, and self-help books, and instead, read this book. This is a book of self-discovery.

Here are a some excerpts from the book that stood out to me. Writing about Todd's book cannot do it justice. It really must be experienced.

"How consciousness exists is not the problem I am interested in, instead, I am interested in the problem of human misery that arises from identifying ourselves with experiences and ideas. Let us remember that what we mean by consciousness does not come with a label. Any explanation of consciousness (or anything else) must be a product of the mind, a hypothesis."

"The more serious the disillusionment, the more difficult it becomes to explain away contradictions. When events of our lives surpass our capacities to rationalize, then our confidence will shatter, particularly regarding beliefs about ourselves. Kabir’s poems take the place of disillusioning events to quicken our understanding about life. When we let go of prejudices, we gain access to alternative ways of responding."

"It is important to make a distinction between the two different types of spiritual seekers. Someone looking for a reflection of themselves in their spiritual experiences is doing something different than someone who quiets the mind without getting lost in the novelty of an altered state. In other words, the latter does not seek to prove an idea about the self through experiences that come and go."

"When we use people, we probably destroy or limit our affections in the process. Emancipate others from being just a prop in a cerebral autobiography."

"Meditation is driving into the neutrality of our being. The various forms of introspection are vulnerable to the contamination of wishful thinking. Unfortunately, people mistake meditation as a means to attain some imagined state. Con artists make use of the altered states generated in meditation as proof of their nonsense. We will not gain anything from silence and, instead, will temporarily lose what we build out of thought."

"There are two treasures hidden in our own life, one is the recognition of our joy and the second is the recognition of what we cannot accomplish through the satisfaction of desire. When we stop expecting our delights to achieve some other ideal, then we find ourselves without as many disappointments. Such a loss of misery is a great gain."

"Kabir points toward an understanding of the mind that allows creativity without the burden of identifying ourselves with what we create. Quiet the mind, see the fictions and live."

An exploration of truth and a path to live consciously!
By ASH
The relevance of Kabir by Todd Vickers beckons you to ponder about the most asked yet unanswered questions in our lives- What is truth? and What do you desire? Using the interpretations of the 15th century Indian mystic poet - Kabir, Todd helps you embark on a spiritual journey.

As I was reading and reflecting, I realized more and more that we are the prisoners of our own thoughts and ego. It's hard not to appreciate how brilliantly Todd explains how much sense Kabir's teachings made to this century questioning the norms,so called values & beliefs of our forebears and the mistakes they have made. This therefore helps introspect, think freely and apply reasoning at every stage of life to live consciously.

This is a straight-forward book, lays simple yet profound wisdom which we can take with us and apply in our daily lives. But beware! This book can make you question all that you have believed in your entire life-time and almost every important decision you have taken in your life based on those beliefs. It touches many controversial and rarely outspoken subjects especially among the highly conservative audience like in India and inspire some radical change in the way we think.

It's a book that you can pick up at anytime, and each time you discover further insights and learn something new.

Real Life Page Turner
By Shireen R. Eddings
Miracle or Coincidence? by Ed Ashurst, is a book that will provoke your thought and belief that someone is involved in our lives for our good. It's exciting to read even if you don't get the miraculous side of things, and provoking if you are curious about it. If you don't know much about the West, cowboys, or ranch life, the book shows an adventure that still going on. And that adventure spreads in other ways across this country and around the world in the lives of men like Salvador, Grover and Chuck.

Great Read!
By Sara
Ed Ashurst is a great storyteller! In the pages of this book he's found an interesting way to share stories that were shared with him; to open the door to times and circumstances in which God has intervened in the lives of common men and women to profoundly change the course of events. It's a great read, full of honesty and frank realization without being "preachy".

Amazing AND down to earth!
By Ron Leedy
A few other books have been published under a similar title, but none have the panache of this book by Ed Ashurst. Somehow the writer has combined the flavor of a campfire story with the sophistication of classic journalism. It's a good read that I couldn't put down until I reached the end. Thank you Mr. Ashurst for breaking through my lifetime-reader jadedness.

The Prophet: The Life of Leon Trotsky, by Isaac Deutscher

Few political figures of the twentieth century have aroused such intensities of fierce admiration and reactionary fear as Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. His extraordinary life and extensive writings have left an indelible mark on the revolutionary consciousness. Yet there was once a danger that his life and influence would be relegated to the footnotes of history.

Published over the course of ten years, beginning in 1954, Deutscher’s magisterial three-volume biography turned back the tide of Stalin’s propaganda, and has since been praised by everyone from Tony Blair to Graham Greene. In this definitive work, now reissued in a single volume, Trotsky’s true stature emerges as the most heroic, and ultimately tragic, character of the Russian Revolution.

Review
“In the 1930s, Trotsky, with a handful of followers, attempted to block the path of Stalin’s relentless hurricane of betrayal and murder. His epic defence of the soul of the Revolution against its bureaucratic executioners was a torchlight in the storm. In one of the very greatest modern biographies, Isaac Deutscher redeems the legacy of this astonishing revolutionary and humanist thinker.”
—Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums

“The three volumes of Isaac Deutscher’s life of Trotsky ... were for me the most exciting reading of the year. Surely this must be counted among the greatest biographies in the English language.”
—Graham Greene

“He has told the story more accurately and with fuller detail than ever before. His book is compulsory reading for anyone interested in the history of Soviet Russia and of international communism.”
—A.J.P. Taylor, New Statesman

“This is the critical voice the velvet revolution faded out. The republication of Deutscher’s classic trilogy is good news for a new generation who want to know what went wrong with communist-style socialism.”

Three Volumes and the Truth
By Jeffrey Rubard
For those not in the know, the Isaac Deutscher Prize is awarded to the best Marxist book in the English language each year. The reason the award bears that name is this biography of Leon Trotsky, one of the best Marxist books written in the English language any year. Deutscher was a Polish Jew who as a young man threw his lot in with communism and then with Trotsky's criticism of the movement's direction, losing his membership card without losing his life (a rarity at the time) and then escaping the Nazis through a fortuitous move to London. He wrote a biography of Stalin which sold well, but his monumental three-volume biography of Trotsky (*The Prophet Armed*, *The Prophet Unarmed*, *The Prophet Outcast*) was a staggering political and intellectual achievement, written and published when official criticism of the grotesque atrocities of Stalin was only beginning. The premier English leftist publishing house Verso brought out a handsome trade-paperback edition of the biography around 2000, but the three volumes took up too much bookshelf real-estate for libraries and most leftist hobbyists: this slimmer compendium robs the "trainspotter" of any excuse for not familiarizing themselves with the book.

A Ukranian Jew whose youth in the late 19th century was both rustic and relatively privileged, Lev Bronstein did not take to Marxism immediately, nor did he later take immediately to the ideas and policies of the man whose destiny he would forever be tied to, Vladimir Lenin. A spellbinding orator in the abortive 1905 revolution, the man then called "Trotsky" would play a central (Deutscher argues it is *the* central) role in the 1917 revolution which toppled the Tsar and then brought a militant, road-tested and serious Marxist cadre, then known as the "Bolsheviks", to power later in the year. Trotsky would continue on in his brilliant career as the chief military leader of the nascent Soviet Union in its Civil War; he maintained a commanding presence in the life of the country well into the Twenties, but the centrifugal forces which were bringing an undistinguished Georgian "party hack", Josef Stalin, into greater and greater prominence and power in the initially quite pluralistic Bolshevik regime forced the iconoclastic Trotsky into a "Left Opposition", a third imprisonment in the Soviet outback (the first two had been at the hands of the old regime), and an exile which ended in his assassination by a Stalinist agent in Mexico in 1940.

In his decades of agitation, rule, and critique Trotsky became one of the few Marxists to successfully fuse the principles of Marxist analysis and the techniques of governing an actual country: the only parallel figure is that of Mao (the sordid story of how a decelerating Russia retarded the Chinese revolution is covered by Deutscher in detail). Additionally, he remains the central "internal critic" of the communist movement, who after some peregrinations alit on a version of communism which would safeguard the freedoms of the individual and the progress of the masses. However, the central story of Deutscher's work is not philosophical, but the whole story of the October revolution: beginning, during, and after. He writes with a relish Western "Sovietologists" would never permit themselves about the revolution's achievements, achievements Trotsky would never himself disparage even after Stalin assumed full control of the country. Historical distance and the apparently botched "end of history" have not improved the common understanding of Bolshevik rule, and the story told here will be a revelation for anyone whose mind is not made up in advance: initially an enlightened regime with popular support and more than a smattering of capitalist business, after Lenin's death the movement (at a remove of some years) collapsed under murderous make-believe orchestrated by Stalin, whose maleficient powers were however in large part inherent in the political dynamics of the country.

In fact, one of the major revelations of this work for those who wouldn't, or couldn't, pay too much attention before is the extent to which Stalin's ideas *were* Trotsky's ideas: long before Stalin began the forcible collectivization of farming and rapid industrialization, Trotsky had called for similar policies (though it is doubtful he would have pursued them so ruthlessly). Trotsky was not a democrat, and so he was hard put to critique the dynamics of single-party rule in the Soviet Union, even as all of his friends (and many of his enemies) ended up before firing squads in the 30s. Otherwise, the panorama of an intellectually acute man of action who did not truckle to political cowardice is instructive and edifying. Put it on your "eventual" list.

A bit dated but well done
By M. Kramer
Written while the USSR still exhisted this biography of Trotsky is, I think, close to definitive. At over 1600 pages it better be. It seems to be surprisingly not dated. Well worth the effort.

The perfect biography of Trotsky.
By B. Wolinsky
Let me begin by saying that I’m no fan of Leon Trotsky, and I think a whole lot of his ideas would never have worked. I’m also no fan of Communism and I believe that it can’t work. However, this book is wonderful, because it shows how Trotsky and Stalin, both ruthless in their drive for power, had opposite ideas on the goal of the Soviet state. Published in England in the 1950’s by a Soviet exile, and now reissued by Verso Books, this biography of the Communist leader gives great insight into the origins of all the horrible things that happened in the Soviet Union.

Trotsky was not anti-capitalist in a way that would destroy the economy. On the contrary, he knew that business was necessary for the nation’s industry to survive. Lenin, who like most Communist leaders had never held down a job, bulldozed everything in his way. Stalin, who considered Trotsky a nuisance, set up a phony economy that was built on slavery and lies.

This biography was originally in three volumes, which makes it a long book to read. However, even though it was written by a dissident, it isn’t overly biased. We get a good, clear view of Trotsky’s philosophies and his personal life. It shows you how the Soviet Union could’ve become a success, but was ruined when Stalin made himself into an emperor and ruined it.

Juan Bautista de Anza: The King's Governor in New Mexico, by Carlos R. Herrera

Juan Bautista de Anza arrived in Santa Fe at a time when New Mexico, like Spain’s other North American colonies, faced heightened threats from Indians and international rivals. As governor of New Mexico from 1778 to 1788, Anza enacted a series of changes in the colony’s governance that helped preserve it as a Spanish territory and strengthen the larger empire to which it belonged. Although Anza is best known for his travels to California as a young man, this book, the first comprehensive biography of Anza, shows his greater historical importance as a soldier and administrator in the history of North America.

Historian Carlos R. Herrera argues that Anza’s formative years in Sonora, Mexico, contributed to his success as a colonial administrator. Having grown up in New Spain’s northern territory, Anza knew the daily challenges that the various ethnic groups encountered in this region of limited resources, and he saw both the advantages and the pitfalls of the region’s strong Franciscan presence. Anza's knowledge of frontier terrains and peoples helped make him a more effective military and political leader.

When raiding tribes threatened the colony during his tenure as governor, Anza rode into battle, killing the great Comanche war chief Cuerno Verde in 1779 and later engineering a peace treaty formally concluded in 1786. As the colonial overseer of the imperial policies known as the Bourbon Reforms, he also implemented a series of changes in the colony’s bureaucratic, judicial, and religious institutions. Charged with militarizing New Mexico so that it could contribute to the maintenance of the empire, Anza curtailed the social, political, and economic power the Franciscans had long enjoyed and increased Spain’s authority in the region.

By combining administrative history with narrative biography, Herrera shows that Juan Bautista de Anza was more than an explorer. Devoted equally to the Spanish empire and to the North American region he knew intimately, Governor Anza shaped the history of New Mexico at a critical juncture.

Review
“The product of exhaustive archival research, Carlos Herrera’s comprehensive, cradle-to-grave biography of Juan Bautista de Anza is a highly significant contribution to the history of the American Southwest and northern Mexico. Herrera demonstrates that in addition to his prowess as a military leader Anza was the instrument of fundamental change in Spanish colonial New Mexico through his implementation of the Bourbon Reforms, a series of measures to consolidate royal authority and power. This outstanding study, especially Herrera’s penetrating look at church-state relations in the colony, is one of the most thorough examinations of New Mexico in the late colonial period.”—Rick Hendricks New Mexico State Historian and coauthor of The Witches of Abiquiu, 1756–1766: The Governor, the Priest, the Genizaros, and the Devil

About the Author
Carlos R. Herrera is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Borderlands Institute at San Diego State University–Imperial Valley. His numerous articles have appeared in the Journal of the Southwest and Journal of the History of Sexuality.

Freedom of Angels: Childhood in Goldenbridge Orphanage, by Bernadette Fahy

'I entered Goldenbridge orphanage in my Communion outfit. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing there.'

At age seven, Bernadette Fahy was delivered with her three brothers to Goldenbridge Orphanage. She was to stay there until she was sixteen.

Goldenbridge has come to represent some of the worst aspects of childrearing practices in Ireland of the 1950s and 1960s. Seen as the offspring of people who had strayed from social respectability and religious standards, these children were made to pay for the 'sins' of their parents. Bernadette tells of the pain, fear, hunger, hard labour and isolation experienced in the orphanage.

Can a person recover from such a childhood?

How does the spirit ever take flight -- and gain the 'freedom of angels'?

This is Bernadette Fahy's concern. Now trained and working as a counsellor, she has had to dig deeply into her past to understand the patterns laid down by her upbringing. She has had to rebuild her life, and now she helps others to do the same.

This book is a story of triumph over the harshest of circumstances.

Harrowing, inspiring account of orphanage life
By seamus enright
This is a surpisingly objective account in places, but it's interesting to see how the author, a qualified counsellour, often reverts back to a childhood linguistic mode when describing her early experiences. She's conscious of the effect that living in an orpanage has on the way she percieves the world as a whole. At times it feels like the book is written by 2 different authours, one a badly scarred orpanage vitim, the other an impartial commentator.
it works, though, it's often harrowing and should be enough to make anyone who perpetuated the institionalised cruelty of these institiutions feel ashamed. It's an angry, but not necessacarily bitter book that deserves a wide audience in Ireland and elsewhere.
