He was a reserved and aloof man, often dull, always a midwesterner despite his many years as coach of the UCLA Bruins. Though a coach of biracial teams during a period of intense racial feelings, Wooden remained above the fray, rarely accused of bigotry, though never a crusader. Similarly, coaching with astounding success throughout the sixties, and having among his athletes the greatly gifted but politically aware and rebellious Bill Walton, Wooden, though frequently at odds with his stars, managed an unprecedented and since unequaled series of championships. About the Author
Seth Davis is the author of the New York Times bestseller When March Went Mad: The Game That Transformed Basketball and the memoir Equinunk, Tell Your Story: My Return to Summer Camp. In 1995, he joined the staff of Sports Illustrated, where he is currently a senior writer. He is also an on-air studio analyst for CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network during coverage of college basketball and the NCAA tournament. A graduate of Duke University, he lives with his family in Los Angeles.

Not What I Expected, Better!

I was a little skeptical at first that there was cause for another book on or by John Wooden. If you've read a lot about him, you are familiar with his wealth of wisdom and his wonderful pyramid of success. On and off the basketball court he is a man of most inspiring character, and to millions, he is premier role model of a disciplined approach to life, leadership, and coaching.
What Seth Davis contributes with this book is unique. He wasn't personal friends with him, like Woody Woodman or Gary Adams, so his look into "Who Wooden Is" is much more objective, comprehensive, and authoritative. It's not a quick, fluffy, feel-good read, but a thorough 608 pages all about the highs and lows, successes and hardships that John Wooden endured through his life and career. If you are a coach like me, it's nice to read beyond the coaching how-to books like Training Soccer Champions by Anson Dorrance but also learn the personal side. This book gives you a real honest look at Wooden as a teacher, husband, leader, and of course, best coach ever.

A Man, Not a Wizard

“He was, in short, a hard-to-please, detail-obsessed, hyper-organized taskmaster and control freak – which made it all the more jarring when he adopted a hands-off approach during games,” Seth Davis writes in his book about John Wooden, "Wooden: A Coach’s Life."
At six hundred and eight pages, this biography based on the legendary UCLA basketball coach would be enjoyed by enthusiasts, educators, and historians of the sport. Divided into four annual seasons that cover thirty-five chapters, those who loved, played for, coached against, and resented him reminisce about the iconic figure. With some profanity (mostly quoted), included are eight pages of black and white photographs, his coaching record, over thirty pages of notes, acknowledgments, and a thorough index.
Senior writer for Sports Illustrated, Davis spent more than four years compiling and gleaning public and personal information on the positive and negative side of Wooden, the “Wizard of Westwood” who led his team to ten NCAA titles and a record eighty-eight game winning streak beginning in the nineteen sixties.
Starting from the determined, self-disciplined child raised by strict Christian parents on their sixty-acre Indiana farm, young Wooden wanted to be a civil engineer. Learning balance in life through a new sport called basket ball, he grew up during the Depression, played at Purdue, became a US Navy lieutenant, and incurred a back injury, changing his vocational path to teaching English at the high school level.
After two years coaching basketball at Indiana State University, he moved his wife and family to sunny California and began a stellar twenty-seven year career instructing famous players such as Alcindor, Allen, Goodrich, Hazzard, Walton, Wicks, and Wilkes in his fast-breaking, zone-press playing style.
The author confirms it obviously was not all fun and games as Wooden arduously drilled his “Pyramid of Success” into his players who, at times, were defiant, disrespectful, and wearisome of his puritanical, disciplinary rules about foot care, haircuts, curfew, and pre-game superstitions. Never known to cuss, drink, or cheat on his wife, Nell, the aloof, hard-headed, and uncompromising coach was verbally abusive to referees, ritualistically referred to his five-by-seven note cards, and fastidiously controlled his players at arm’s length as he gripped a silver cross in his hand.
Written as a beginning-to-end-of-life story, readers quickly understand not only one man’s challenges, accomplishments, and disappointments en route to his rise to fame in the new world of basketball, additionally shared are the era’s racism, hostility among players, and jostling by power-hungry individuals.
Lengthy due to several additional biographies, Davis’s detailed perspective of Wooden’s “goodness gracious, sakes alive” life during an exciting yet tumultuous time in American sports is well-documented, unbiased, and objective, reiterating the prolific coach was a man, not a wizard or saint.

Great Storytelling, but lacking family details

What an excellent read. On several accounts, this volume offers renewed and complete perspective of the stories told in Coach's many autobiographies. The passages on Sam Gilbert especially were outstanding and meticulously researched.
That said, this book lacks detail what was truly the coach's life- that being, his family. It is often quoted that Wooden's priorities were, in order- family, faith, and friends. This book offers rich detail of the UCLA dynasty, but lacks detail about John Wooden the father, the parent. Storytelling of John Wooden the father to Nan and Jim is required to paint a truly complete portrait of the man, and as the book's title suggests, his life. We need to know more of his great skill, and also of his imperfections as a parent...
And while there is great detail of Wooden's devotion to his wife as she grew ill after he retired, Nell is hardly mentioned prior to that in this book. Again, storytelling of John Wooden the husband during the dynasty years is required to more completely tell the story of the man.
