a mutual friend introduced us to Jamaal who became a good friend over the years

Many moons ago, I followed the coaching career of fellow Indiana State alumnus John Wooden who coached Jamaal Wilkes. Liza, a mutual friend introduced us to Jamaal who became a good friend over the years. My wife and I are fascinated at how humble he is, despite all his accomplishments. He is well rounded and balanced, bright on and off the court - all star on the court, honor student off the court. His book revealed even more humility that makes us so proud to be his friends. He is a good inspiration to our youth who are in dire need of clean and decent athletes. :)

Very good book detailing Keith's early days growing up in California

Very good book detailing Keith's early days growing up in California, then playing high school basketball and then playing for the Wizard of Westwood, John Wooden. His college days with Bill Walton, Greg Lee, et al. is very incisive and brings the reader inside the Bruin mystique.
His pro playing days with Rick Barry, Kareem, Magic Johnson are also detailed and Keith tells his feelings on each of them. Very good book on a key member of the UCLA dynasty of early 70's....

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, January 2015: By now, most Americans past high school have learned something about the internment of Japanese-Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1940; until recently a not-much-discussed piece of history—the internment of citizens mostly born on our soil—was, to many, a blight on the human rights record of the Roosevelt administration. But what The Train to Crystal City makes clear is that Executive Order 9066, which paved the way for internment of Japanese Americans, was just one of the questionable human rights decisions the wartime administration made. According to this dramatic, copiously detailed but still very readable account, a camp in Crystal City, Texas housed American-born children of German and Italian descent as well as Japanese, and many of those children were traded for “more ostensibly important Americans – diplomats, businessmen, soldiers, and missionaries” who were stuck behind enemy lines. The Train to Crystal City: A Journey's End

I just recently got the opportunity to preview a upcoming release, "The Train to Crystal City" by Jan Jarboe Russell. This is the untold story of not just Japanese-Americans held in US concentration camps during WWII, but the largely unknown story of German-Americans and Italian-Americans as well, many of whom had lived in the US for years but were stripped of the US citizenship and imprisoned. In addition, this story reveals how the American born spouses and their children were also incarcerated as well. That would be story enough, but there's more.
"The Train to Crystal City" also details a secret prisoner exchange designed and approved by FDR whereby these now former Americans were sent to enemy combatant countries along with their spouses and children, often against their will in exchange for key individuals being held behind enemy lines, including downed airmen and US businessmen. The story details how the US military kidnapped foreign nationals---German-Mexicans or Peruvian-Japanese along with their families, with the aid of their respective governments, who then shipped to the US to be held at potential exchanges in this very same internment camp. In exchange for their support, these governments freely confiscated the businesses, homes, and assets of these individuals. Unable to return home and not wanting to be deported to war torn countries they barely knew, if at all, this is a gripping book. I urge everyone to read it.

Trust Your Government

Every American should read this book, especially those who are enthusiastic supporters of everything government does. It follows the World War II experiences of a pair of un-naturalized Japanese and German men and their families, including American citizen children born in this country, who , despite many years living in this country, were interned in a Texas concentration camp to be traded for Americans caught in or captured by those countries. There were many other American families there, along with many forcibly brought up from several Latin American countries. The German was an engineer, the Japanese, a clergyman. The G/A family were traded near the end of the European War and were instrumental in saving an American pilot and a Germen Jewish girl. The J/A family was sent to Japan after the war for no good reason, but eventually were allowed back to the U.S. They all had good reason to distrust government after their experience, though they loved much about America. The J-A girl sums it up nicely with a sign she hung over her bedroom door to the effect of: "If you have trouble with medical bills, go to the nearest airport. You'll get a free full X-ray and breast exam. If you mention AlQuaida, you'll get a colonoscopy." At least she retained a wry sense of humor.

Harrowing story of wartime prejudice

This book is an unvarnished look at what can happen in time of war. Author Jan Jarboe Russell tells the story of WWII-era immigrants who were herded into a hastily constructed family internment camp in Crystal City, a small Texas town in a desolate area near the Mexican border. While the book contains much general information about the internment camp and the personalities involved in creating it, the story is framed around the experiences of two teen girls -- one German, one Japanese -- who were herded into the camp along with their families.

It's easy to say "this won't happen again," but I remember more than one person saying to me after 9/11 that "all the Arabs ought to be run out of the country." The WWII camps were built in response to fears that spies from Germany, Japan and Italy could be hiding in the immigrant communities from those Axis nations. In the general panic after Pearl Harbor, putting those immigrants in places where they could be fenced off and watched seemed like a prudent idea. Little thought was given to the suffering involved, as families were uprooted and had their businesses and bank accounts seized.

Russell's exhaustive research brings the reader back to an era that many would like to forget, but it's important that we do not forget it.

Clark shows us how he too often justified his trafficking as a moral crusade against political hypocrisy and social injustice. The advocates and dealers provoke sharp denunciations from President Lyndon Johnson to George Bush. Once demands for Clark s drugs become established, politicians began to question whether hash sentences for marijuana possession really suppress trafficking it. This valuable memoir begins with the post-World War II domestic migration of African Americans from the deep South. Marvin Clark lived most his life in Boston, where he wrote for local newspapers. He died in 2011.

NEVER CHARGED, NEVER CONVICTED shows the power and far-reaching effects of the drug industry

Before this book I had never heard of Marvin Clark, but thanks to the help of Carl Senna and Strategic Media the world is able to know not just his journey in life but the life he lived and how he was able to survive in a cruel world and business.

NEVER CHARGED, NEVER CONVICTED shares not just a man's experiences in the drug industry but how he was able to not just be a part of that underworld but grow into himself along the way. That is probably the biggest surprise for me. We get to see Marvin Clark the man, outside of the illegal activities and whispers about the life he was living. We get to see how he made a name for himself, was respected and was able to live in a time where the color of his skin already made him a target---and his lifestyle only intensified that scrutiny.

If you are looking for a book that intertwines the racial tension of the United States and the war on drugs, NEVER CHARGED, NEVER CONVICTED will definitely keep you riveted to the end.

Awesome book!!

I just finished reading this wonderful book! I loved the story and the way the author would speak directly to the reader. This sweet short book is an easy read for busy people but the message is profound. I would highly recommend it and can't wait for her next book.

When she was Olga Maria Rodriguez, she had fallen in love with and married a man who initially didn't even speak her language, an American named William Morgan who had found purpose in his difficult, directionless life by joining the revolutionary forces in Cuba to overthrow Fulgencio Batista. His experience in the U.S. Army had ended with him going AWOL, but his superior military skills helped him overcome the distrust of his Cuban comrades and earn the admiration of the country's citizenry, who were "hailing him as a hero of a revolution that was about the change the course of history." Yet there was tension in the revolutionary forces between Morgan's Second Front and Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement, as the former remained committed to liberating the country and holding elections while the latter was consolidating power and turning the new government into a communist dictatorship. Even greater complications ensued as Morgan was recruited for a plot to assassinate Castro, turned double agent by revealing the plot to the targeted dictator while continuing to play along, and ultimately found himself stripped of his American citizenship and imprisoned by the Cuban government. About the Author
Michael Sallah, co-winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting, is the coauthor of Tiger Force. He has written and edited groundbreaking stories for the Miami Herald, revealing public corruption and government blunders that prompted congressional hearings, legislative reforms, and the recovery of millions in taxpayer dollars. Sallah was a 2012 Pulitzer finalist for a series that exposed deadly conditions in Florida’s assisted-living facilities for the elderly and mentally ill, which resulted in a grand jury investigation and the forced closing of some of the largest facilities in the state. He writes for the Washington Post and lives in Washington, DC.

Mitch Weiss, co-winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting, is the coauthor of Tiger Force, No Way Out, and Hunting Che. Over the last twenty years he has investigated stories of clerical sexual abuse, government corruption, police misconduct, and white-collar crime. His investigative series about corrupt real estate appraisers won several national awards in 2009, and he won a George Polk Award for his coverage of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He works for the Associate Press on special projects and lives in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Untold Story of American Freedom Fighter Out of the Cuban Mountains

Excellent researched story of American William Morgan who went to Cuba to fight the Bautista dictatorship as part of the Second Front group, separate from the Castro brothers and Che Guevara who fought out of another mountain range.
A thoroughly told history of the revolution, it's heroes, tactics, failures and ultimate victory. Hero Morgan becomes disillusioned with Castros communist revolutionary government and sets out to free Cuba as the original plan was to be. We all know how that turned out.
Fascinating story well documented and told by the authors. Great work!

Very interesting story of an american army deserter who tries to reinvent himself and joins up with a faction of the Cuban insurgency in Florida.His unit and Morgan battlefield heroics were household names in revolutionary Cuba at the time much to the chagrin o the other more famous faction led by Fidel, Che and Raul the 26of July Movement.

Not to give away the ending but much of the book focuses on how Morgan and cronies broke away from Castro and was later arrested and sentenced to die by firing squad.

I grew up in a small Italian town at the foot of the Alps. We didn’t have television, computers, or any other type of home entertainment. During the long winter evenings we listened to stories. My grandmother could tell fantastic tales of fairies and monsters. Often cousins and other neighborhood kids will gather in our kitchen to listen to Grandma spin her magic.
There were a few occasions when she would be up until late to finish a chore, and I would ask my grandfather to tell me a bedtime story. My grandfather’s stories were ‘real life’ ones. According to him, of course. Back then I never doubted him and as I grew older and reflected on it, I began to think that indeed they were true slices of his life and that at some level they were meant to teach me something. That inspired me to blog about it at first, and finally I decided to share some of his and my stories with you. I hope we don't disappoint you.

A short, delightful trip into a gentler, more innocent past

I just had the most delightful visit with Maria. I was in my own cozy sitting room and she was speaking from the pages of her memoir about her family. She did most of the talking, as she had the most precious stories to tell. I offered my own memories from my visits to the little town where she grew up when she happened to mention a location I recognized. We such had a lovely visit, I think I may invite her to share the stories with me again some time.

This little "diary" is written, not with the polished hand Maria Grazia Swan employs in her novels, but in the manner of a casual conversation with a good friend. Since I have family in Valdagno, Italy (my son and his Italian wife and her extended family), I felt I was getting a glimpse into my in-law's family history, as well as Maria's.

Even without a personal Italian connection, anyone would surely enjoy this short trip into a gentler, more innocent past.

May we all so blessed to have family stories

This little book of family stories, fables and lore is lovingly written by the author as a tribute to her family. In some ways, it is also the backstory of one of her characters, Mina.

As we are personally exploring adding a feline to our tiny family unit, I read her story: "There once was a cat" more than once. It really seems to be the most personal story for me, and one example of the courage not only of Ms. Swan's family, but even the four-footeds in her history.

Maria writes:"I loved my grandfather with all my heart. “You know,” he said to me. “I would love to be a fly on the wall of this house after I’m dead.”“Whatever for?”“Just to see who will grab what. That’s when you can tell those who are sincere in their feelings from those who are just greedy.” I, for one, think that she got the best stuff without greediness. She got the stories. Well written and wonderfully authentic

Longtime Fan of Author's Newsletter Stories, So Couldn't Wait to Buy the Book

One of my favorite emails each month is the alert that Maria Grazia Swan has posted another newsletter. Each short post is a beautiful peek into her life growing up, her life now, and all the wonderful people who make up her history and world. So, I've been a longtime fan of her grandfather's tales, and I've loved that little periodic glimpse into Maria's Italian past. For this reason, I was thrilled when I saw she had a new book out that was filled with the stories told by her grandfather. This book is an absolute keeper for me. As I read, my mind wanders the mountainous region of Italy years ago, and I pretend I'm there, too. I especially love seeing her handsome grandfather--yes, that is his picture on the cover. And while this book will be the one I continue to recommend at every opportunity, I'll also be suggesting readers subscribe to her newsletter, too. Because you never know when another Grandfather Story will appear in a future post. I have my fingers crossed for more soon.

Must read for Western enthusiasts

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am pleased to add it to my bookshelves, along with Dearment's books on Bat Masterson and George Scarborough. Dearment's writing is scholarly, fully footnoted, and draws upon a variety of sources, some of which must have been astonishingly difficult to unearth. The focus on gunfighters keeps the story lively, and the action is put in a historical context that provides a vivid picture of life in the Old West.

I am taken aback that the first reviewer of the book describes it as "tedious," while otherwise praising it. I consider it a good read and appreciate Dearment's meticulous scholarship.

A real treat for American frontier history buffs

Here are the stories of John Bull, Pat Desmond, Mart Duggan, Milt Yarberry, Dan Tucker, George Goodell, Bill Standifer, Charley Perry, Barney Riggs, Dan Bogan, Dave Kemp, and Jeff Kidder. DeArment's informed and informative text is enhanced with illustrations, and an "Afterword", along with notes, a bibliography, and an index. Deadly Dozen is a real treat for American frontier history buffs and a very highly recommended addition to personal, community, and academic library American Western History reference collections.

A living book about gunfighters

DeArment books are the most accurate ever written about gunfighters. Not only he described how dueling happened but events leading up to the main action.
DeArment describe not isolated events but all the career of the outlaw or lawman.
He is the best historian on the subject and Deadly Dozen 1 is a great book, a "living book" about real western.

The Greatest WWII Hero the public didn't know about...

First thing first, if you are interested in WWII black ops missions conducted by the OSS this book will be worthwhile. The mission during the Battle of the Bulge is very interesting, where honor, intelligence, courage and bravery abounds. The book reads like a fictional novel, but actually being 12 true life top-secret missions of Col. Halford Williams' (John B. Leith) with his personal account of his experiences. I can understand why his military service had to be kept clandestine because of the nature of his missions and persons who were involved. The most endearing part of Col. Williams career was how he was pacifist, choosing to show mercy towards the enemy during most of his missions. However, the most amazing thing about his exploits was his tapping into his spiritual side. His vision of Jesus Christ and receiving the blessing, to paraphrase, "that if he didn't pursue the secret missions with hate towards the enemy that he would always be successful". I believe that he allowed himself to be used for a greater purpose, executing 62 successful suicidal missions in less than two years. Two of which shortening WWII, significantly. Be prepared to see a Christian theme during the book where Col. Williams is confronted with personal spiritual accounts and how supernatural forces seem to be protecting and guiding him throughout his missions. There will be those who question the book because of the spiritual elements and will dismiss it as fiction. However, if the reader finds the book to be factual and inspiring, it may lead some to reconsider their worldview and others to reaffirm their faith. Either way, Mr. Leith is a very good writer, putting the reader in his narrative of what could be considered the greatest WWII hero the U.S. and the Allies had that the public didn't get to know about until now.
P.S. - I read the Kindle version which had a few editorial/spelling blips. Which I have encountered before. Thank you Donald M. Ware for getting the book published and I would like to see more books by John B. Leith.

An exciting interpretation of some stories about WWII.

This was the most mind bending book I have read in a long time. It is based on true OSS Missions during World War II by an American led team. The person who wrote the book could not divulge anything about his war missions until he was deceased, so he wrote the book and passed it on to someone else to publish. He was called The American Fox by the Germans and had a $300,000 reward on his head. Missions he accomplished as the team leader changed the war. Blowing up a fuel depot of the Germans helped Patton's 3rd Army proceed, as the Germans had no fuel for their final big attack at at the Battle of the Bulge. Another secret mission tricked Hitler to move his prime troops south of Normandy, so that we had much less resistance for D-Day. German generals were skeptical, but had to follow Hitler's ideas. Another mission just happened to encounter some Death Squad Germans with captured Jews on the way to death camps, and even though saving the Jewish children and adults was not part of his mission, he was presented the choice to try to save them, taking more risks for his team, and he did, on the way to completing the mission to rescue a scientist from a Nazi prison. On another mission, he found some ancient Christian relics in a cave in France, and one of them was a shield that gave him a sense or protection on his missions. Over all, I just could not stop reading this book till I was done. After finishing it, I re watched the movie Patton to see if some of the things mentioned in this book were in the movie. In Patton, we do not know exactly WHY the Germans suddenly went south leaving Normandy, even though the German generals did not want to do that, but Hitler had some information that made him decide to move the troops. They thought maybe Patton was going to lead a landing farther South, and moved troops out of the Normandy area by the same day as D-Day. But, IF this book is true, NOW we know WHY Hitler thought he should move away from Normandy. The guy who wrote this book supposedly did a mission that planted false information that got to Hitler and again changed the war. Even so, he got no credit and had to deny all that he did in the war. He changed the outcome of the war, but no one even heard of him, except in this book. A fascinating look at history. There is something about the Spear of Longinus which is not in another book I have on that, so I am not sure which version of capturing that is true, but it got me going on more research about that. An eye opening read for sure.

I recommend this book to any and all who enjoy our American history! What an amazing man and amazing sacrifice this man made for his country. Men such as this are never to be forgotten!
