Wow

This was such an amazing story and I hate to see it end. I feel as if there were still some questions left untold but I know if I read Memoirs of a Trap Star's all the questions would again be answered. There were many parts in this book that really hit home and I'm so glad Bella shared her story with us. It was very emotional at times but it also showed what real friendships are made of and how many times there are people we will cross our paths in life but stay in our hearts forever.

Amy Carmichael: Beauty For Ashes, by Iain H. Murray

Amy Carmichael (1867-1951) was a missionary and author who spent over fifty years of her life without returning home serving mainly low caste girls and boys in South India. Iain Murray's concise biography provides an enlightening and moving account of her remarkable life and love for her Saviour, as well as perceptively drawing lessons from it.

Review
'This is a love story of the noblest kind. It is an enriching consideration of a woman's relentless love for her Saviour, her Bible, her friends, and most uniquely, her love for lost, suffering and desperate sinners to whom she gave her life. Such devotion as hers seems so distant. Reading this brief history will confront and help to close that distance.' --John MacArthur

'Iain Murray has written a superb account of this remarkable woman's life . . . He has read her books and her poetry, and what he writes reveals a keen understanding of the motives and undertakings of an extraordinary woman. It warmed my heart and informed my mind...I cannot too enthusiastically recommend this book.' --Ian S. Barter

About the Author
Iain Hamish Murray, born in Lancashire, England, in 1931, was educated at Wallasey Grammar School and King William's College in the Isle of Man (1945-49). He was converted in 1949 through the ministry at Hildenborough Hall, Tom and Jean Rees' Christian conference centre in Kent. It was at Hildenborough later that same year that he first met Jean Ann Walters, who was to become his wife (they married in Edgeware on April 23, 1955).

After service with the Cameronians in Singapore and Malaya, he read Philosophy and History at the University of Durham with a view to the ministry of the English Presbyterian Church (his parents denomination). It was at Durham that he began to read the Puritans, whose writings were to become a lifelong passion. After a year of private study, he assisted Sidney Norton at St John's Free Church, Oxford, in 1955 56, and it was here that The Banner of Truth magazine was launched, with Murray as its first editor.

From 1956 he was for three years assistant to Dr Lloyd-Jones at Westminster Chapel and there, with the late Jack Cullum, founded the Banner of Truth Trust in 1957. He left Westminster in 1961 for a nine-year pastorate at Grove Chapel, Camberwell. With the world-wide expansion of the Trust, Iain Murray became engaged full-time in its ministry from 1969 until 1981 when he responded to a call from St Giles Presbyterian Church, Sydney, Australia. Now based again in the UK, he and Jean live in Edinburgh. He has written many titles published by the Trust, in whose work he remains active. He is still writing.

Wonderful New Biography of Amy Carmichael reviewed by Bill Pence of CoramDeotheBlog.com
By Bill Pence
I have read several fine books by Iain Murray, the most recent being a biography of John MacArthur (whose wife Patricia wrote the Foreword to this book). I also saw him speak on revival several years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed this short biography of Amy Carmichael, someone I was aware of, but did not know much about prior to reading this book.
Amy was born 1867 in Ireland. She would meet Robert Wilson, who Murray writes gave Amy a closer knowledge of overseas missions. Amy left for Japan with the China Inland Mission in 1893, where she stayed fifteen months. Some of her experiences during this time would mark the rest of her life.
On October 11, 1895, she left Britain at the age of twenty-seven never to return. She moved to serve in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). She responded to an opening in the work of the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society in India. She would need to learn the Tamil language.
Murray writes of Amy meeting Thomas Walker, a clergyman of the Church of England, working with the Church Missionary Society in the Tinnevelly district of south India. The Walkers invited her to join them in Tinnevelly, to study the language. By the end of 1896 Amy was with the Walkers, beginning one of the strongest influences in her life.
Murray writes:
“In 1900 Thomas Walker had decided that a disused Church Missionary Society mission station at a place thirty miles north of Cape Comorin—India’s southern point—would be a better and quieter site for the ordination classes he took for divinity students. This was Dohnavur, a ‘Christian’ village which he had first visited in 1886. The strength of Walker’s leadership in the early days at Dohnavur was vital but, before 1904 ended, Amy had to take on that role herself. Walkers left for England in December 1904.”
Carmichael's most notable work, beginning in 1901, was with girls and young women, some of whom were saved from forced temple prostitution. By June 1904, seventeen children, six of them former temple children, were in Amy’s care, and even when the number was depleted by the death of three babies, Murray writes that it was clear that her evangelistic travels had to end.
To all the children Amy was known as ‘Amma’ (mother). The children came to nick-name her ‘the Hare’. She would use a tricycle to move even faster between the various buildings. Not a child went to sleep at night without a kiss from Amy.
Murray writes that Amy Carmichael’s life was one of times of refreshing and then of trials. In part she explained that demonic activity follows the work of the Holy Spirit.
Through the years of the First World War, and on into the 1920s, the work at Dohnavur grew, more land was bought, and by 1923 there were thirty nurseries, each with a mother for the children. By 1926 there was to be a boys’ compound with some seventy to eighty children.
Murray writes about Stephen Neill, who in 1939 would become Bishop of Tinnevelly. Neill didn’t adhere to the inerrancy of scripture. As a result, he was asked to leave by Amy.
Amy was a gifted writer who produced many books and hundreds of hymns and poems.
At the age of sixty-three Amy broke her leg, dislocated an ankle and twisted her spine. After this time, her life would be spent very largely in her room. Through most of the years which followed she wrote a short daily message to the whole family with some scriptural truth and often bearing on the necessity of unity.
By the 1940s there were some 900 children and grown-ups, including between forty and fifty helpers. The hospital work grew to such an extent that a medical superintendent was needed, as well as three doctors.
Among the thirteen books Amy wrote after her accident, seven were on what it means to live with Christ in all the circumstances of trials of life. Murray writes that in these she wrote not of her own experience but out of it.
A fall in her room in 1948 meant a virtual end of movement for the last two and a half years of her life. She turned 83 on December 16, 1950 and died on January 18, 1951. She was buried according to her instructions in the garden beyond her windows. It was ‘God’s Garden’, for here were buried the babies, children, and grown-ups who had gone before. There was to be no memorial stone.
Murray does address some possible concerns with Carmichael. One of them was in taking direction from a single verse of Scripture, rather than guidance from general scriptural principles and prayerful reflection.
Murray writes that two main features stand out both in Amy Carmichael’s life and in her writings. The first is the place of quietness in the life of the Christian. The second feature of her life was love.
Murray states that today, while rescue from temple prostitution in India is no longer needed, 15 million women in India are still living in slavery. As a shelter for needy children, Dohnavur continues its work, on the same principles with which it was founded, and is led entirely by Christians of Indian nationality.
No appeal has ever been made for money, only for prayer, but many, through the years, have sent sacrificial gifts. Never has an unprotected child been refused for lack of funds: never has a patient needed to be turned away because he or she could not pay for medical help. A Fascinating Figure
By Tim Challies
History is chock-full of fascinating individuals, and over time I am attempting to meet more and more of them through the pages of great biographies. Amy Carmichael is one of those people I had heard so much about, but I had never gotten around to actually reading an account of her life. But when I saw that Iain Murray’s latest work is a brief, accessible biography of Carmichael, I knew I had to give it a go. I’m glad I did.

Carmichael is one of those people who had an unusually powerful sense of God’s calling on her life, and an unusual level of dedication to the Lord and to his work. As a young woman she determined that she would dedicate her life to foreign missions, and this despite many trusted people in her life attempting to dissuade her. She left her native Ireland and soon settled in India where she became involved in rescuing women and girls from temple prostitution, saving them from lives of utter misery. In 1901 she founded Dohnavur Fellowship which soon grew into a bustling home for hundreds of abandoned or rescued young men and women. She penned many books and, through her life of service, convinced many other people—and women especially—to consider becoming missionaries.

Based on Murray’s biography, there are several things about Carmichael that stand out. The first is her unshakeable confidence in the Lord and in his purposes. Though she suffered deeply, and though she witnessed so much of the misery of others, she maintained utter confidence in God. Closely related is her confidence in her calling. Once she arrived in India, she never left—she remained there for her entire life and, as far as I can tell, never seriously entertained the idea of returning home to a more comfortable life and setting. She also determined that she would emulate George Muller in refusing to ask others to support her work; instead, she committed to prayer and relied upon God to provide all that her mission needed. Not surprisingly, God was faithful. In these ways and others she makes an interesting and important subject for a biography.

Of course she was human, so struggled with sin, and Murray deals well with her flaws. While he does not dwell on them or allow them to become the story of her life, he acknowledges that she was not without her temptations and theological foibles. The most unfortunate of these foibles was her tendency to allow subjective impressions to take the place of God’s Word in her life, directing her actions in ways that later proved misguided. She is hardly the first to succumb to this temptation, and a few occasions in her life show just how important it is that we keep impressions in their proper place—as impressions, and not necessarily as the voice of God.

Murray’s biography is short—almost too short—but it is powerful and tells the story of a fascinating life. There are many things we can, and undoubtedly should, learn from Carmichael’s life. This short work is a great place to begin.

Great read for the whole family!
By Jimmy R. Reagan
Are you looking for a Christian biography for the whole family? Here is one on a fine Christian lady that will appeal to everyone in your house. In addition to enjoying it myself, this volume will find use in our home school. Though the ladies might especially enjoy it, I will assure the men out there that this book and Amy Carmichael’s life will be a challenge to your own spiritual life.

Though the book is written where teenagers could easily read it, there is nothing fluffy about it. Prolific biographer, Iain Murray, whose books have been enjoyable to me on several occasions, distills her life for the greatest spiritual effect. Plus you get a real glimpse of who she is as a person. He tells what a wonderful impact Tomas Walker, the missionary she worked with, had on her life.

Amy Carmichael’s life, admittedly, makes a biographer’s task easy. She went just to be a help to a mission work and the Lord just opened a children’s ministry up to her. Not a typical ministry, however, as she was rescuing little girls from a life of forced temple prostitution and one of rescuing the lives of children who had no future in the harsh caste system in India.

Mr. Murray, in the last part of the book, examined her life critically because the two popular biographies wrote of her without one critical comment. He uncovers that she was human, was more and more autocratic as the years went by, but still with taking all that into account she was a sincere, humble, and trusting servant of Jesus Christ.

This is a fine volume on a fine lady and I highly recommend it.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams, by Phyllis Lee Levin

A patriot by birth, John Quincy Adams's destiny was foreordained. He was not only "The Greatest Traveler of His Age," but his country's most gifted linguist and most experienced diplomat. John Quincy's world encompassed the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the early and late Napoleonic Age. As his diplomat father's adolescent clerk and secretary, he met everyone who was anyone in Europe, including America's own luminaries and founding fathers, Franklin and Jefferson. All this made coming back to America a great challenge. But though he was determined to make his own career he was soon embarked, at Washington's appointment, on his phenomenal work abroad, as well as on a deeply troubled though loving and enduring marriage. But through all the emotional turmoil, he dedicated his life to serving his country. At 50, he returned to America to serve as Secretary of State to President Monroe. He was inaugurated President in 1824, after which he served as a stirring defender of the slaves of the Amistad rebellion and as a member of the House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848. In The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams, Phyllis Lee Levin provides the deeply researched and beautifully written definitive biography of one of the most fascinating and towering early Americans.

Review

“In the splendid The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams by Phyllis Lee Levin, you can picture [John Quincy Adams] the portly minister and the tall royal squinting into the winter sun reflecting off the Neva River…Levin's biography restores the countless details that humanize the sixth president.” ―Bloomberg

“Heartfelt and distinguished...a study of the first half of John Quincy's life and times that's as concerned with the inner man as with his increasingly remarkable public achievements.” ―The Washington Post

“…A richly detailed biography of sixth U.S. president John Quincy Adams…Levin crafts an intimate portrait of a bookish, devoted young patriot who struggled to balance filial duties to doting parents, a troubled marriage to a wife whose own writings reveal her inner turmoil, and an ambitious career.” ―Library Journal

“Levin makes the case that Adams was a man of extraordinary natural gifts, enhanced by diligent study, European travel, and contact with the greatest minds of his era, including Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin…Leading readers through JQA's early life almost day by day, The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams offers detail and intimacy.” ―The Boston Globe

“…Levin offers wonderful insights into [John Quincy Adams's] career and character… an excellent examination of a portion of the life and public career of a true icon in U.S. diplomatic history.” ―Booklist

“An intimate, richly detailed portrait of a powerful political figure.” ―Kirkus

“Phyllis Lee Levin's The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams is a brilliant look at a major American figure of continuing interest. Beautifully written and meticulously researched, Ms. Levin's important new book makes exceptional use of Adams' unexpurgated diaries to underscore the humanity of this misunderstood figure, 'Old Man Eloquent,' and adds necessary nuance to his undeservedly harsh reputation.” ―Paul LeClerc, President Emeritus, New York Public Library

“John Quincy Adams, long overshadowed by his celebrated father, comes fully into his own in this luminous account of his extraordinary education--as a boy in Revolutionary Massachusetts and the courts of Europe, a youth at Harvard College, a brilliant young diplomat, and a failure in his first outings as a politician. A shrewd observer of American political history and a perceptive student of human nature, Phyllis Lee Levin has taken the measure of the private as well as the public life of her subject, and the result is the warmest, most elegant, most knowing portrait of John Quincy Adams we have ever had.” ―Patricia O'Toole, author of The Five of Hearts: An Intimate Portrait of Henry Adams and His Friends and When Trumpets Call: Theodore Roosevelt

“Balanced, compelling, and wise. Levin brings Louisa Catherine Adams, Adams's troubled wife, into the center of the picture, where she belongs, and the author is shrewd about family dynamics.” ―Publisher's Weekly

Insight into John Quincy Adams' Private Character, but the Writing is Problematic.
By mirasreviews
"The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams" is something of a misnomer. John Quincy Adams, accomplished diplomat and sixth president of the United States, did certainly have a remarkable education. But Phyllis Lee Levin follows his life far beyond its formative years, until 1814, when Adams was recalled, at age 47, from his post as US Ambassador to Russia shortly before becoming US Minister to the Court of St. James in Great Britain. If this were the first volume of a lengthy biography, I could understand the abrupt and illogical termination in 1814. But, as it is purportedly a biography of John Quincy Adams' education, his graduation from Harvard, the conclusion of his law studies, or even his first diplomatic posting to The Hague in 1793 at age 27 might have been a more sensible point at which to wrap it up.

"The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams" sets out to enhance our appreciation of the politician by showing us the man. Adams was a avid diarist, resulting in 51 volumes over the course of his life. His son Charles Francis edited them down to 12 volumes before publishing the abridged "Memoirs" in the 1870s. References to Adams' personal life were omitted. The Massachusetts Historical Society has made the entire contents of the diary available online, but it is daunting to plough through. The Society's publication of John Quincy Adams' correspondence, entitled "Writings", is also very much abridged, stripped of insight into his private life. His wife Louisa Catherine was not entirely well when she wrote her moaning memoir (1840), which includes "serious distortions of fact." So it has been difficult for writers and readers to grasp this man's character.

It is Phyllis Lee Levin's goal to bring that character forth on these pages. In this she succeeds. She incorporates information from John Quincy Adams' diaries, begun in 1779 at age 12 while he was accompanying his father John Adams on European assignments, including the negotiation of a peace treaty with Great Britain, as well as from John Quincy Adams' correspondence with his father, mother, sister Nabby, brothers, less frequently friends and cousins, and later his wife Louisa. Through his writings, we come to understand Adams' expectations, personality, values, and evolving world view, especially in his youth, as he left the United States and his mother at age 10 to accompany his father abroad and then served as secretary to the United States' minister to Russia, Francis Dana, at age 14. Despite bouts of depression, John Quincy had a lot to write about.

The Adams' were interesting, articulate writers, so one can hardly go wrong with a book that revolves around their lives in their own words. The author, however, quotes excessively from the primary sources, not only when the quote is uniquely interesting, but also when it could easily have been paraphrased or left out. Her prose sometimes lapses into archaic vocabulary and sentence structure that befits her subject but had me doing double-takes whenever I discovered that her words were not, in fact, part of the quote. Accounts of John Quincy's relatives occasionally become tangents; Louisa's account of her history, from her memoirs, reads like a book report. These problems, and scant analysis, plague the book's first half more than its second, but it needed a couple more drafts and guidance from a good editor to stanch the bloat of quotations and odd phrasing.

Viewed as a condensation of John Quincy Adams' writings from this period, bolstered by similar condensation of his correspondents, "The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams" is worthwhile. As a biography, it needed to be more concise, more analytical, and more in the author's own voice. I would wonder if this were Phyllis Lee Levin's first book did I not know that she has written two others, including "Abigail Adams: A Biography" (1987). To reiterate, Levin's purpose is to introduce readers to the man John Quincy Adams rather than the politician, so there is no exposition of his political ideals or of Federalism. Adams' political views and decisions are discussed as they relate to his values and impact his life, not in detail. "The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams" was not intended to be comprehensive or definitive.

Well written bio of a fascinating Founding Son
By Jaylia
He’s not exactly an American Founding Father--John Quincy Adams is actually the son of a Founding Father so he’s more like a Founding Son--but he’s become one of my favorite Revolutionary era personalities and I so enjoyed spending time with him in the pages of this book that I was a little heartbroken when I came to its end. Being the oldest son of John and Abigail Adams, John Quincy was raised to embrace the Puritan work ethic and absorb a strict moral compass that dictated self-improvement, good works, and public service, but unlike his parents he spent many of his formative years living, traveling, working, and studying in Europe so there’s a Continental enhancement to John Quincy’s personal outlook, political understandings, cultural appreciations, and love life. His wife Louisa was the only European born First Lady.

John Quincy’s European adventures are thoroughly covered in this book which focuses on the first half of his life. His extended trips abroad were during that turbulent but highly interesting time surrounding the French revolution, stretching from Louis XVI through Napoleon and beyond, and John Quincy got to meet and sometimes know well many of the era’s leading figures. As a young teenager John Quincy acted as secretary and translator for his father and other American government officials in countries that included France, England, Russia, and what became Germany, and later as a young man he himself had several diplomatic postings around Europe.

Well researched and written with clear-eyed sympathy and appreciation, The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams brings readers into the heart and mind of John Quincy before he became President. While John Quincy was born and bred an American patriot and eventually attended Harvard like his father, having the chance to enjoy and compare the arts, cultures, cities, governments, and landscapes of Europe gave him a broad political education that could not be duplicated in any classroom. Even just as a history of its time this book is fascinating, and I especially enjoyed the personal glimpses of rulers John Quincy became close to, like Alexander I of Russia and young King William III of Prussia and his family.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through LibraryThing. Review opinions are mine.

The Education of the First Progressive American
By Mark J. Fowler
What I knew previously of JQA was from the movie "Amistad" and David McCullough's celebrated biography of John Adams. The father and mother, Abigail, of John Quincy Adams prepared him for greatness. Essentially home-schooled by his brilliant parents and standing alongside the likes of Benjamin Franklin and other Founding Fathers, he had only three years of formal education prior to his entrance at Harvard. H.W. Brands' biography of Franklin called that great man "The First American." In The Remarkable Education of John Quincy Adams Phyllis Lee Levin has detailed the formation of America's first great progressive mind. Young JQA watched his father defend the British soldiers of the Boston Massacre and learned to rule his emotions with intellect - not unguided passion. By the end of his career - after his Presidency and while a member of Congress - Adams had rarified his views to become one of the chief voices advocating against slavery. Decades before the Civil War he defended the slaves of the ship Amistad who had taken matters into their own hands after being taken slave after the U.S. had outlawed international slave trade.

Levin combed through volumes of first-hand accounts and condensed the mountains of material into this 544 page-turning biography. Her narrative smoothly transitions between the words of Adams and those around him and her own conclusions. I feel I know the man, and I can think of no higher praise for a biography.

I would have liked to read far more in depth information about her ...
By Dabat
Well written book packed with a lot of information. Much of it did seem regurgitated information about grief, found in any self-help book out there. It appears Saunders took each aspect of grief and just made it fit to her own experience. I would have liked to read far more in depth information about her true feelings. What was truly inside her head, bad and good, anger, her marriage, etc. I do not discount her loss, there is far more to grieving than this book says. I feel I got just another mundane book about grieving and loss and how one survived it.

This is a must read book if you are ready to transcend the physical death of a loved one.
By Katye Clark
Gail's book "Resilient Heart: Transcending the Death of your Loved One" is about love and hope. Gail shares her story of courage, wisdom and hope and gently guides the reader through the maze of confusion and grief experienced after the death of a loved one.

As I read "Resilient Heart" I was glad to read that Gail wasn't offering a new way to grieve. Gail shares her story and her process of healing after her beloved husband Frank birthed into spirit (died a physical death). Gail shares her experiences in the hopes of teaching others how they can also find their way back from the maze of confusion and grief after the physical death of someone they loved.

I love the questions she ask the reader to ponder at the end of many chapters. I love Gail's honesty and sharing her sometimes raw emotions as she shares her story. Gail's book is guidebook. I love chapter seven "Recreation" Self Discovery and Recovery. This chapter agrees with my own beliefs and teachings that when a great shift occurs in our lives there is an opportunity to have a rebirth in one's life. I'm going through my own rebirth since my husband Allan birthed into spirit. I love how Gail shares the difference between surviving and transcending the physical death of a love one. Couldn't have said it better myself. This is a must read book if you are ready to transcend the physical death of a loved one.

A true light-bearer of conscious healing
By Uma G
Gail Saunders is a true example of conscious healing, the most difficult challenge a griever faces. In a world where it is so easy to distract, hide and run away from painful feelings provoked by the death of a loved one, the author chose to sit in the fire and let it burn her--the only way to rebirth and regeneration. As a grief guide I know how hard it is for people to face their feelings with integrity and commit to the healing process. That is the strength of this book. Through her personal experience, Gail shares tips, tools and techniques that helped her transform her trauma into treasures so she could be a light-bearer for others. I was in awe of her courage and honesty as I turned the pages and came away with the feeling that her beloved Frank's death, however hard it was for her, will help shape many resilient hearts in the realm of grief and loss.

Couldn't put it down
By coolatheart
I picked this book up at a local surf shop on Treasure Island FL and could not put it down. I was reading the book on one the same beaches the book was written about. The only time I looked up was when someone walked by and said "cool book dude". 8 hours later I was truly entertained. I've loaned this book out to at least 10 people, all of which said it was the most fun read they've had in a long time. Steve Lamb is a very colorful and likable character who is seen riding his bike all over St. Pete Beach with a tale for anyone with the spare time to listen. This book will bring a smile to everyone's face.

makes one want to meet Lamb
By JR
Steve Lamb is the kinda guy everyone wants to meet. I put this book in the same memorable category at Midnight Express and also Snowblind-a brief career in the cocaine trade. I got it at the library but have since bought the book to loan to people who i know have similar interests. If National Geographic Magazine does another issue (early 2000's) of the top 100 adventure books of all time, this book is a contender.

GOOD BOOK ABOUT THE GOLDEN ERA OF WEED SMUGGLING
By Screaming Batfish
This self published book is a quick page turner and a very enjoyable read. Written in a simple style that makes the book feel quite personal - almost like a diary - Smuggler's Ghost is the story of Steve Lamb who started out as a simple nickel bag dealer in high school down in Florida in the sixties and parlayed that into a career as a hugely successful weed smuggler that earned him millions and millions of dollars and a stint in the slammer.

The book is full of adventures that you would expect (and want in a book like this) from a high level pot dealer - shoving pounds of weed down the toilet of a boat to avoid arrest by foreign boarding officers, dealing bricks of skunk weed at rock festivals, numerous wild and colorful characters, hot chicks ready to party, smuggling drugs into prison, burying millions (sometimes losing) of dollars in plastic boxes and coolers, dangerous and hair-raising voyages across the Caribbean, and of course as what happens to the majority of smugglers - eventually being busted and making the decision to flee the country.

This book makes you long for the days of old time Florida and carefree living. Today if you want to score some weed you may have to deal with some speed freak criminal with a pistol down the back of his or her grease covered jeans. Unless you live in Washington or Colorado that is.

My only complaint about the book is that Steve glosses over his prison days and the book ends with him fleeing the country with those further adventures to be documented in a later book. Since this book came out in 2010 I guess we'll have to wait a while longer to see how it all turned it out. If ever. I wish he had maybe condensed down some of this book and added those later years for one complete telling of the tale.

But all in all a great read about the golden age of weed smuggling. I think it would make a hell of a movie if someone would buy the rights to it.

American Ghoul: Ed Gein, by Kris Leigh Murphy

Genre: Historical Fiction
At the midpoint of the twentieth century, a small town in central Wisconsin didn’t know what was coming. When a feud between two wealthy land developers leads to a double murder, rumors abound that one of the victims has put a curse on the town. On the night of November 16, 1957 this possibility becomes a terrifying reality. The county Sheriff investigates the disappearance of local businesswoman Bernice R. Worden. He doesn't know that he is about to uncover the secret life of grave robber and killer Ed Gein, the American Ghoul.
A horror epic based on real events!

Book Excerpt:

Plainfield resident Eleanor Adams passed away on a Wednesday in 1955 after a long illness. She was 51 years old, too young to die. But as fate chooses who it will take away and how, so it also chooses when and without explanation. Her casket was lowered into the ground at 12:30pm the following Monday as her husband and two teenaged children joined a gathering of relatives and close friends to bid her adieu.

A clergyman said in closing: “Sand to sand, dust to dust, from mere flesh to a free and joyous spirit unto the Lord. For as the body dies, so does the spirit live on. Farewell to you, Eleanor Mabel Adams. Farewell.”

A light drizzle turned to heavy rain and the mourners dispersed. Mrs. Adams was buried, but she would not stay buried for long.
___________

Eddie liked it when it rained. He always did, even as a child. As his pale white pick-up rolled into the Plainfield cemetery that night he couldn’t help but to smile, at least on the inside. It was just too perfect. The rain kept potential witnesses indoors and bought him the time he needed. True, it took a lot longer to dig into wet dirt, and he would likely be aching all over his body tomorrow. But the anticipation was too much to resist. As he drew nearer, taking a hard left around the old mausoleum, he was shaking in his knees and his elbows. His mouth went dry and he felt a sudden, dizzying elation. He was intensely sexually aroused and it showed (he’d forgotten that Augusta was close by too).

Eddie could hardly see through the windshield as the gusting wind and rain rendered his wipers next to useless. The engine roared as he charged up a steep hill, lost his way and nearly crashed into the marble statue of Saint Francis of Assisi that he was looking for. In fact, his bumper had hit the statue but he didn’t notice. He tumbled out of the cabin and scurried to the back, mud squishing under his work boots. As he reached for the shovel, a bolt of lightning electrified the sky and the rain became torrential. He had to move fast. The howling wind blew the rain sideways so that it was slapping hard against his face and fogging his eyesight. He felt a little scared for the first time. The elements were responding wrathfully to his arrival. He wondered if he should heed their warning and hurry home- without his prize.

Eddie stayed. It took him another ten minutes to find the plot. At one point he panicked because it wasn’t where he thought it was. Finally, he found Mrs. Adams nine rows behind his family plot where George, Augusta and Henry were interred. Eleanor was sleeping, only sleeping and he truly felt chivalrous to be rescuing her at last.

He felt eyes all around him, armies of the forgotten dead watching but powerless to strike him down. Even the angels that guarded their grave sites were weeping, for this was the hour of the ghouls.

Eddie began to dig.

The Author does a very good job of telling the story
By Ella Anne
I ordered this book because I knew it was the story 'Silence of the Lambs' was created from, but other than that, I didn't know the true story. The Author does a very good job of telling the story, and any author who can write about such a subject without interjecting his/her personal opinion in the storyline is a writer extraordinaire. At times, the details are hard to read and knowing it is a true story makes it even more difficult to absorb.. This book is a study in genetic instability, and it hard to tell who the victim is at times; the husband, the brother, the killer, the actual victims, but one thing known, they were all victims of an over-zealous, over-protective unbalanced mother. Good read, if you can take it.

Ed Gein's tale of terror
By Raven
An American Ghoul by K. Leigh Murphy

American people seem to love slasher films such as Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But before all of them there was a real person whose macabre tale was the inspiration for them all.

Norman Bates, the sick motel keeper in Psycho keeps the mummified corpse of his death mother around and often argues with her. He even dresses like her to commit murder. Buffalo Bill, the slasher in Silence of the Lambs has made a woman suit out of dead women. In Texas Chainsaw Massacre, leather face wears the facial skin of a dead person as a mask.

Ed Gein did all of this and more. This is the story of Ed Gein, on surface a rather quiet unassuming man who did chores around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin. He sometimes drove the school bus. He was trusted to babysit. He usually had his supper with one or the other of the families in the area. He was a fixture at a local bar, only having a few beers, never rowdy or out of hand.

The children of the town whispered about him. They said that a strange creature danced in the moonlight in Ed’s yard. They said an old woman stared at them and waved from a room on the second floor. They said Ed had a collection of shrunken heads. The grown-up thought the children were just talking. After all, at that moment Ed might be in the yard playing catch with their son.

The bartender, Mary Hogan, a buxom blonde with a potty mouth vanished one night. People said that she had run off with a traveling salesman. They said she had gone to another state to live. Ed quietly mentioned that she had gone home with him and was there now. This got a laugh from the others.

Then storekeeper Bernice Worden disappeared and there were traces of blood behind the counter. There was a recent receipt in the drawer maked with Ed Gein’s name. The police rushed to Gein’s home—and into a horror like nothing ever seen before…

K. Leigh Murphy tells the story of the Plainfield Ghoul, Ed Gein, against a backdrop of local history. Murphy talks about people who founded the town, the presence of the Ku Klux Klan in the area, and the history of the police force before and after that black day in 1957 when terror was unleased. Murphy tells the history of Ed Gein, his domineering, hellfire and brimstone mother Augusta, who told them all they would burn in hell; his father, George, who was deceased (and burning in hell according to Ed’s mom;) and his brother Henry, also dead. Ed was suspected of killing him. This insight into the mind of the ghoulish serial killer will chill the mind.

The book gets five stars…

An Atheist to a Christian: One Man's Journey to God, by Levi Matthew

Levi grew up as the kid who would never believe in anything. His parents didn't take him to church, and it wasn't until he was seven years old that he began occasionally joining his friend Edwin to go to a house of God. But even then, he did not know much about God, Jesus or the Bible. Spending time with Edwin and his family gave Levi a chance to escape his own unhappy home. He witnessed his mother cheating on his father and had to deal with his father's verbal and physical abuse. Through it all, he just wanted to be loved like other children. Levi went through high school drinking and struggling to fit in, and then he joined the Marines, all the while struggling to believe in God. Even when his son was thought to have Down syndrome-but was born healthy-he shrugged it off as the doctors being wrong in their diagnosis. The obstacles that Levi overcame and the wars he survived show that God loves everyone-even those who don't love Him back. He shares how he opened his eyes and went from Atheist to Christian.

A must read!
By Raymond Adams
This is a fantastic 1st person account of one man's tale of going from a non-believer to a pastor. It is an amazing collection of many stories in Levi's life. He grew up in a non-loving environment and escaped by joining the U.S. Marines where he did over 20 years and two combat tours. He found his way in an amazing story and this is a must read. You can tell that this is not written by a novelist but that brings out the reality of the story and feel that you are hearing it straight from the author. Must read!

I loved the book!
By BJ
I loved the book! In the interest of full disclosure, I bought the book because I know the author and
knew how much work she had put into her family's history. That being said, I expected the usual
dry listing of names, dates and a few family stories. Instead I found a "story" of individuals successfully and
unsuccessfully adapting to very rapid changes in our country. The historical references
to our country were skillfully woven with the personal history. It made the United States history more personal.
It made the personal history more alive because it was presented within the framework
of what actually was happening in their time. Good read!

A whole new class of family history writing
By Irene's Daughter
In a way, it is unfair for me to rate a book I haven't finished. But so far, I am impressed. I expected a standard genealogical text, which this is not. however, it is not a lot of fanciful 19th century embroidery either. The book conveys history in an interesting way, explaining it by way of the author's family. I am also descended from her most distant ancestors, and I understood them in a whole new way. I have checked out a lot of the early facts, and so far everything is quite accurate. But more than accurate, it is also fascinating. The people seem real.

Henry VIII, by Abigail Archer

Henry VIII ruled England from 1509 to 1547. As a young man, he was fond of sports and hunting, and was said to be uncommonly handsome. Standing more than six feet tall, he loomed large in the lives and minds of his subjects as he navigated his country through the tricky diplomatic and military hazards of the sixteenth century. A man of enormous appetites, Henry conducted affairs with many women, married six, and executed two. His infatuation with Anne Boleyn set in motion a chain of events that reshaped the church in England and eroded the dominance of Rome. But the popular image of Henry as a crude tyrant, dispatching courtiers, enemies, and wives with gusto, obscures a more nuanced and fascinating character. He was a true Renaissance king who presided over one of Europe's greatest courts and nudged Western civilization onto a new course. Here, from Abigail Archer, author of The New York Times bestseller Elizabeth I, is the story of Henry VIII.

A book that's worthy of its subject.
By KFreeman
My wife can trace her lineage to the Tudors, so I was eager to read this book. The story of Henry VIII has all the facets of a novel: sex, lies, religion, and murder. But this story is true - and this book is fascinating. It reveals aspects of his life that popular culture ignores, particularly his relationship with his strong-willed grandmother, Margaret Beaufort.

Married six times, Henry VIII had an appetite for education, food, power, and women. This well-written book examines a man who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted, even if it meant beheading his wife, imprisoning his advisors, or undermining his church.

Henry VIII started his 38-year reign on the battlefield; he died as an obese, paranoid, man who had to be carried in a specially-designed chair. The life of Henry VIII, as told here, is as riveting as any story, fact or fiction.

Enjoyable history
By Joe W
This is everything most non-historians are looking for in a history book. It's short, concise, covers the most significant events and influences in Henry VIII's life, and is written in good, lively prose. I wish my high school and college history books had been even half as interesting as this one. If I were a teacher of general history, I would choose this for one of my texts. It whets the appetite for further study instead of making the reader glad to reach the end. I had not run across the author prior to reading this book, but will look for more of her titles in the future.

Good reading
By Carlene
Well written, factual, informative. Don't expect Allison Weir level of detail, however. This would be a good book to read if, unlike me, you haven't feasted on more microscopic examinations of Bluff King Hal's personality..
