A look into the life of the worlds most famous and successful entrepreneur

Richard Branson's life is like the ultimate "Rags to Riches" story although he didn't grow up in poverty he certainly did not come from a rich family. Now he is one of the most successful businessmen in history, he has dabbled in nearly every market that exists and even some that didn't until he came along. The Virgin brand is huge and known by nearly everyone in one form or another. A very interesting look into the life of the ultimate entrepreneur who pretty much everyone can learn something from. This is definitely a must read.

An inspiring work about an amazing man that is sure to motivate any aspiring entreprenuer

One of the coolest business icons of his generation, I thought this book on Richard Branson would be a great addition to my library. I’m a business owner myself and I thought this book would be a perfect tool for inspiring me forward as I progressed through my own business ups and downs. I’m pleased to say that I was entirely correct. The story of Mr. Branson and his wildly charismatic approach to business was entirely engaging. From his start with The Student to the fleshing out of Virgin, I was taken aback by his unabashed forward motion, even in the face of failure. Mr. Branson has become somewhat of a model for me after reading this outstanding material. He is an outside-of-the-box thinker with a drive that few could ever reach the heights of: A perfect role-model for the aspiring entrepreneur.

This book shows everything from Mr. Branson’s start and rise, to his blaring business mistakes and ultimate successes. I loved the part on Handling Failure and Criticism and also the insight about him managing 400 (400!) companies. If you want to read about an amazing and charismatic individual that has made his billions on business savvy, intelligence, and the power of his personality, then you won’t be let down by the information here. It’s quite possibly one of the best works I’ve found on how to be yourself and thrive in business.

Richard Branson is the head of one of the largest conglomerates of all time. This book tells his story including how he started the Virgin empire at a very young age. Part of Branson's success is his unique ability to use his different businesses in a way that they will compliment each other and end up providing multiple streams of income in the same realm of industry such as travel in the airlines and holidays. This book highlights how Branson's creativity and determination has contributed to his unbridled success. In the book the author takes from Branson's experiences to show how this unconventional and eccentric man ended up being knighted and one of the richest men in Britain. His openness to new ideas and penchant for excellent customer service has been part of the formula to Virgin's overwhelming success.

About the Author
Gary Moon (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) is director of the Martin Family Institute and Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. He is also distinguished professor of psychology and Christian spirituality at Richmont Graduate University. He is the editor in chief for the journal Conversations and he is the director of the Renovaré International Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation. He is the author of Apprenticeship with Jesus.

John Ortberg is teaching pastor of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church and author of many books, including God Is Closer Than You Think.

Richard J. Foster (D.Th.P., Fuller Theological Seminary) is founder of Renovaré in Denver, Colorado. He is the author of many books, including Celebration of Discipline: The Path to Spiritual Growth, which has sold over two million copies worldwide, Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home, Freedom of Simplicity: Finding Harmony in a Complex World, and coauthor (with Gayle Beebe) of Longing for God: Seven Paths of Christian Devotion.

James Bryan Smith (MDiv, Yale University Divinity School, DMin, Fuller Seminary) is a theology professor at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and a writer and speaker in the area of Christian spiritual formation. He also serves as the director of the Apprentice Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation at Friends University. A founding member of Richard J. Foster's spiritual renewal ministry, Renovaré, Smith is an ordained United Methodist Church minister and has served in various capacities in local churches. Smith is also the editor of A Spiritual Formation Workbook, Devotional Classics (with Richard Foster), Embracing the Love of God, Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven and Room of Marvels.

J. P. Moreland (PhD, University of Southern California) is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in La Mirada, California. He is the author or coauthor of over thirty-five books, including Kingdom Triangle, Scaling the Secular City, Consciousness and the Existence of God, Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview, In Search of a Confident Faith, Love Your God With All Your Mind, The God Question, and Body and Soul. In his distinguished career, Moreland has co-planted three churches, spoken and debated on over 175 college campuses around the country, and served with Campus Crusade for Christ for ten years. The founder and director of Eidos Christian Center, he also previously served as a bioethicist for PersonaCare Nursing Homes, Inc. headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. Moreland's ideas have been covered by both popular religious and non-religious outlets, including the New Scientist, Christianity Today, PBS's "Closer to Truth," and WORLD magazine.

Dallas Willard (1935-2013) was a professor in the School of Philosophy at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles for over forty years. A highly influential author and teacher, Willard was as celebrated for his enduring writings on spiritual formation as he was for his scholarship. His books include The Divine Conspiracy (Christianity Today’s Book of the Year in 1998), The Spirit of the Disciplines, Hearing God, Renovation of the Heart and others. His books have received numerous Christianity Today Annual Book Awards and other recognitions. Willard served on the boards of the C. S. Lewis Foundation and Biola University, and was a member of numerous evaluation committees for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. He received bachelor’s degrees from both Tennessee Temple College and Baylor University and a graduate degree at Baylor University, as well as a PhD from the University of Wisconsin in Philosophy and the History of Science.

A Wonderful Collection of Essays on Willard's Kingdom Teaching

Early May 2013, I found out that Dallas Willard had died. My wife read an announcement of his death on social media as we rode together in a car. We both shed tears.

This surprised me. I had never mourned a public figure. I never met Dr. Willard, but heard him speak on three occasions: in 2006 at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, in 2009 at the Renovare Conference in San Antonio, and in 2011 at the Apprentice Conference in Wichita.

But I had read his books. One beautiful benefit of the written word is the opportunity to commune with other minds. Through his writings, Dr. Willard had deeply impacted my thinking.

At his death, in a very full sense I felt grief rooted in hope. Dr. Willard was in Christ. I am quite confident he still is.

Since Dr. Willard’s death, his fellow kingdom workers and scholarly colleagues have prepared his last manuscripts for publication. I have continued to seek the treasures, old and new, God so graciously brought forth in him.

It was only a matter of time before a work like Eternal Living: Reflections on Dallas Willard's Teaching on Faith and Formation would be produced. The book is a collection of essays written by many who knew Dr. Willard best. It is structured on three pillars of Willard’s life and work: the personal and familial, the scholarly and academic, and the pastoral and ecclesiological.

Many of the contributors are familiar: Richard Foster, J. P. Moreland, Gary Black, Todd Hunter, James Catford, John Ortberg, and others. Contributions by family members Jane Willard, Becky Heatley, Larissa Heatley, and John Willard add authenticity and insight. Willard was a human being, possessing faults. But he was good, thanks to the sanctifying work of God. Gary Moon, director of the Martin Family Institute and Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation at Westmont College, served as editor for this collection.

The essays range from anecdotal to analytical, possessing something for every reader. For anyone seeking to grow in any field of endeavor, it is important to identify models for living, and to follow them. Dr. Willard taught valuable lessons as a friend and family member, as a scholar, and as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

One of my favorite passages in this book is from an essay by James Bryan Smith of Friends University. Dr. Smith cites numerous questions he asked Dallas through the years, one of which was, “So Dallas, which do you think is right, Arminianism or Calvinism?”

I have wondered this myself, both who is right, and what Dr. Willard might think.

Smith recalls Willard saying “Neither.” Willard then “went on to say that both were right, and both were wrong, and he did not fit into either camp.”

In each reflection, we are reminded that Dr. Willard understood that in order to thrive as a friend, family member, scholar, or disciple, Jesus is of utmost importance. We are disciples first. The question is, "Of whom?" Willard feared “Willard-ites.” Rightly so. His best students will learn to look beyond Willard to the one who summoned him forth as a witness.

Reformers are often memorialized, and their time is heralded as the coming of the kingdom. We build statues and tell stories of their past victories, often as an excuse to avoid the task before us. Eternal Living could be regarded as a monument, or a charge.

I choose the latter.

As a student of Dr. Willard, I hope to continue his legacy, not by celebrating Willard, but the God who gifted us with such a life. The church is in continued need of reformation. There remains among us a hunger for knowledge of God.

May God rise up for us more teachers like Dallas Willard, who will immerse us in the Trinitarian reality of God and the everlasting kingdom, disciple us in the good news of Jesus, and help us to know eternal life, both now and forever.

Gary... thank you for putting together this gem! Your introduction alone is worth the price of the book. You have given me an even greater appreciation of Dallas and his work by helping me understand more of his background and early influences / experiences.

A Fitting Tribute for a True Saint

Dallas Willard's books have had a huge impact on me since I met him in Seattle at a luncheon where everyone received a copy of his just-published "Divine Conspiracy." Before that I had never heard his name; after that, I immediately bought every book he authored and often bought additional copies for friends. He is (was) simply the wisest, most insightful, and most gifted writer of "real world" books I have ever encountered since C. S. Lewis. I didn't have high expectations for "Eternal Living" when I ordered it because it is a book of reflections about Willard, not by Willard. But I trusted it would be a wise investment anyway. And it is! The reflections are by people who knew Dallas Willard well and for a fairly long time. Their observations and memories simply confirm the truth of his writings. He was a man who practiced what he preached. I love him even more (if that's possible).

He is also a conservation correspondent, whose commentary on significant wildlife matters such as the current elephant and rhino crises has been widely publicized. He currently lives in Nice, France.

I found this book to be a really interesting read. The central figure of General Louis Botha was a man Winston Churchill described as the greatest General he had known. Certainly the campaign he led in South West Africa (SWA) appears from this well researched and well written account by Adam Cruise to have been almost faultlessly conducted.The intriguing insights into this incredibly difficult campaign, against a well entrenched German army, are captivating. The book gives more that just a needed understanding of the SWA campaign, but also of the politics of South Africa in the wake of the Boer War in which England proved to be a merciless aggressor. Botha thus had to fight a political and physical battle in his home country whilst waging war against a determined and well disciplined German foe. The insights into the vast and harsh environment.of SWA are also intriguing and give a perspective on the later war to follow in Angola against SWAPO and the Russian backed Cuba. Altogether a highly entertaining and informative read.

A succinct summary of one the forgotten campaigns of the First World War along with its forgotten characters and commanders. I found it an enjoyable read. The writer has struck a good balance between historical detail and entertaining reading, thus appealing to military history enthusiasts as well as more general readers. He has 'visited many flowers' of source material that is not easily available without visiting research libraries in South Africa but 'made his own honey' from these and has presented an interesting and often entertaining precis of the German Southwest African campaign and it's Commander-in-Chief. As a relative of men who served in the campaign I have really appreciated this book shedding light on the conditions, circumstances and characters involved in it. It's matter-of-fact style, without any overt political bias, reminded somewhat me of the writings of Denys Reitz. It is indeed sad that subsequent political regimes, from opposite ends of the political spectrum, have chosen to ignore or malign General Louis Botha. An independent-minded and resourceful South African, Botha also represents the politically moderate, common-sense variety of South African that is is seldom portrayed by the media in lieu of crude stereotypes. There is much to learn from Botha's character and statesmanship.

The great general

The book is well researched by the author and has lots of dates, places and names. It is an interesting read about the little known South-West African Campaign during World War 1 and also includes the lead up to the campaign in both South Africa and German South-West Africa. The story though is centred around Louis Botha and the great statesman and general he was.

A Life Shared

I loved this writing for many reasons. I appreciate having the insight into how someone grew up and the circumstances of their childhood and especially relationships with their parents and siblings. While my life growing up was a bit different I can put myself in your footsteps and feel the emotions of your life. The sadness I imagined you felt over the lack of parental verbalization of their love for you was profoundly touching. The jobs you worked and having to give so much of it back to the family at such a young age. Working so hard for those cars only to have them sold out from under you. I'm sure this life built character and responsibility and of course helped mold you into the responsible hard working man that grew up to be...but I also found myself with a heavy heart and shaking my head as I read the words. But I could also see through each of these chapters how God was with you all along. Most profoundly on a day when a young boy had to gingerly manipulate a 3 speed to protect a little pride. I think you were due a victory at that time in your life.

This is such a reminder of how when we die the stories and colors of our lives pass on as well. That is why this writing is such a gift to your children and grandchildren and even your friends.

The author presents a clear landscape of the European energy sector and its dependency on natural gas.

Furthermore, the book provides detailed analyses on Russian and European foreign and domestic policies as these relate to natural gas and security.

In addition, the author provides extremely valuable reexaminations of Vladimir Putin's academic past - which really helps explain the decision-making within the Kremlin. The image of an irrational, ex-KGB megalomaniac is shredded. Instead, what you see emerge is a calculated capitalist with megalomania tendencies.

A must-read, definitely!

Finally we hear the other side of the story instead of what the media dishes out! Scary how the personal vendetta of Otto, and his outrageous misuse of power tore a family apart. He bribes others in a web of lies that is disproved time and time again. Gotti, on the other hand, can back up his statements with facts that are public record. Over-dramatic public displays of the FBI is a waste of of taxpayer money! Whether you are a fan of the Gotti family or not, this book gives a credible inside look of what goes on behind the scenes of the stuff they don't want you to know. Read this in one day because I couldn't put it down!

Growing up in Seattle, WA I have always enjoyed reading about The Gotti Family. I heard John Gotti Jr. wrote this book by himself and I thought it might be a poor read or poorly written. I was wrong. This book is very well written, it is very interesting and was hard to put down. John Jr. gives a lot of funny and memorable first person stories, names and really takes you along for the ride of what it was like being a Gotti during his father's hey day. It is a long book, very interesting and well worth $9.99. I got my money's worth with this book. Buy it.

John Jr. has some writing skills and should write another book. Good for him changing his life.

Shadow of My Father by John A. Gotti is for sure a must read. I couldn't put the book down, looking at it from John Junior's point of view, as a father and son, who needed to tell the truth, and setting the record straight. No one else could of done a better job other than John Jr, who turned his life around for the better. Yet John Jr. never disrespected his father and people from the life. I come from Howard Beach, NY and know some of the Gotti's, they are wonderful people. Telling the story, being John Gotti's son, was done with a touch of class. John Jr. writes very memorable stories of the life, and of his father John Gotti Sr, in his hey day, and the way it really was.I am sure John A. Gotti's family are so proud of him, and so am I . A job well done, I highly recommend this book.

Christopher, AKA Sarge, is a New York City native. After graduating from high school, he enlisted the United States Marine Corps and was selected as the Honor Graduate of his platoon. Christopher conducted multiple operations in several countries in the Mediterranean. After his honorable discharge he joined the ranks of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Christopher excelled quickly and worked in many sections of the police force. His twenty-year career highlights include his five years as a Hostage Negotiator, his Lifesavings Awards and his status as a final- ist for National Officer of the Year 2013. Christopher’s other achievements include being a featured speaker for the Downtown Project Speaker Series, his frequent appearances on the COPS TV show, and being a Law Enforcement subject mat- ter expert and frequent featured guest on the National Geographic hit television show “Brain Games.” Curtis is a two-time published author, and highly sought after speaker in the U.S. Department of State Expert Speaker program. Sergeant Curtis is a CPTED Specialist and has evolved the science into his own creation of Embraceable Space. He stays active as a certified fitness trainer and creator of lovejitsu— the study of the relationship between love and the disciplines of martial arts. He is also the creator the “7 Second Blackbelt,” an incredibly comprehensive course of study that teaches the student to become a trained observer. Great tips

An interesting and very thought-provoking read about arguably one of the most impressive investors to have ever lived. I have always been a fan of Warren Buffet and have read numerous biographies and quite a few books by the man himself, so of course I was pleasantly surprised when I came across this read because it offers a different approach than what I am usually accustomed to reading.
This book offers a premise that is focused more on gaining inspiration and business skills directly from the man himself, and it is structured in a way that makes it concise and easy to read. This is perfect for me, as usually my time is quite limited and my days are often busy. With that being stated, quality is not sacrificed due to the length of the book and it undoubtedly left me with a lot to reflect on after I had finished.

Learning from Warren Buffet.

This book describes the life and practices of Warren Buffet, arguably one of the most successful investors to ever live. In the book, we learn that Warren had a passion for making money and ambition from a very early age. He also learned that the true key to success in buying stocks was not getting into a buying and selling frenzy, but to be patient and wait for the market at the tender age of 11. Another factor to Warren's success is that he looks at the over all value of each company, not just their stock at the time of purchase.The book also is sprinkled with different thought provoking quotes by Buffet that give a real insight into the mind of this brilliant investor. The book is well written and peppered with many lessons that we can all take away from the life and success of Warren Buffet.

A Captivating Lesson on Business

Here is someone that I think should be required reading and studying for everyone. Warren Buffett has been a smart business leader, and everything I hear him say, and the things he has done for Berkshire Hathaway has been inspiring and motivating. I really enjoyed this fantastic introduction and bio on one of this country's hardest working investors. I was surprised how interesting a look it was to go back to Mr. Bufett’s early life and career. Some really interesting stuff on his mentors and collaborators and how they influenced his work and helped shape some of his ideas on investing. The author weaves this story together using some of Buffett’s greatest insights and quotes and in the process leaves you with a powerful message about business edict and performance.
