Saddam Hussein - Fifth President of Iraq - one of the worst enemies of the United States in the past 25 years, also received the key to Detroit in 1980.

Mao Zedong - Founding Father of the People's Republic of China - once held a meeting with Russian leader Krushchev in the pool because Krushchev couldn’t swim and would have to wear water wings.

Kim Jong-il - Supreme Leader of North Korea - kidnapped two directors in order to remake Godzilla and “invented” the hamburger.

Shocking Stories You Probably Didn't Know - QUITE RIGHT!

Easy writing style presented in a short book regarding eight nefarious individuals that did, indeed, cause me and the wife to be aghast at certain segments as an example the mention of Adolph Hitler actually being nominated for a Noble Peace Prize in 1939. See if you can match some of the crazy facts with the vile individual it pertains to below:

1) Supported feminism
2) Awarded the key to the city of Detroit
3) Created laws against animal cruelty
4) Expelled from the seminary
5) Wouldn't fly to a country with two vowels in its name

Have you ever asked yourself what Stalin’s favourite film was? Or Sadam Hussein’s favourite song? Or even what was Hitler’s favourite vegetable? Well if you have, this book is for you! This book is full of crazy and fascinating facts about the lives of 8 of the most cruellest and infamous dictators the world has ever seen. Most of us know the horrific crimes against humanity these men caused in their lifetime and we often forget at the end of the day they were humans just like us with their own unique and strange characteristics and traits. For example did you know Hitler had a chronic flatulence problem or that both Kim Jong-Il and Chairman Mao were terrified of flying? This is a thoroughly fascinating read that I could not put down, genuinely shocking and unbelievable in places and also a grim reminder of the atrocities mankind faced during the 20th century. A must read for history and trivia lovers!

Pleasantly suprised of all the information!!

What a revealing documentary read about some of the most ruthless and evil political leaders in modern time. I was really impressed by the depths to which Michael J White went to... to provide this well done historical perspective. Before I read this book I was pretty well versed on the dark history of many of the leaders in this book. So I was quite surprised, and pleasantly so, to learn so many things that I didn't know I hadn't ever heard before. The author is obviously an excellent researcher and historian. He is also a tremendous storyteller as his writing style and choice of words really keeps the material interesting and engaging. Myself so enthralled that I really trouble putting it down until I finished it. If you are a fan of history like I am and you enjoy books this genre, then I think really like this one! I can't say enough good things about it. 5 great big stars!

La visibilidad de la misma es posible entender debido al número de monumentos arqueológicos y al conocimiento que hoy tenemos de las sociedades Lima, Ichsma y la ocupación incaica hasta la llegada de la hueste española.
De la misma forma, el fin del siglo XVIII, la decadencia de la metrópoli significó también la pérdida de importancia de la capital del virreinato peruano, pero fueron otras circunstancias las que han dado una nueva vida a Lima como centro festivo del país. Desde 1929 tenemos noticias documentada de la aparición de asociaciones de migrantes, provenientes de centros poblados del interior de país, ajenos a los intereses de los grandes propietarios de tierras, representando, en cambio, a quienes llegaban a la capital, en busca de mejores opciones de vida frente a la pobreza de sus respectivas regiones. Fueron ellos, quienes iniciaron en fecha tan temprana las llamadas “invasiones de tierras” que se hicieron notorias en los años cincuenta y sesenta, rechazadas por el gobierno y la mayoría de quienes se consideraban “limeños” frente a lo que veían como migrantes ilegales con todos los prejuicios imaginables dirigidos especialmente contra quienes tenían origen indígena.
Como era de esperar, finalmente la migración se impuso y Lima es hoy una ciudad andina, a la que también han migrado las costumbres, música, bailes y dioses andinos. La Lima del siglo XXI es otra vez la capital festiva del Perú.

Ramblings is a collection of columns Carol Kittelson wrote for the Lake City Graphic newspaper between 2011 and 2014, the last of which was published just three days before her death on Sept. 7, 2014. Royalties from the sale of this book benefit the "Life Matters Here" renovation project at the care center at Mayo Clinic Health System in Lake City, where Carol was an employee, volunteer and finally a resident. From the introduction: "Her writing could be confessional, nostalgic, comforting, humorous and (to some) embarrassing. It was often many of those things at once. Whether it was dancing with door handles to the music of Elvis Presley as a teen in her hometown of Quenemo, Kansas, sneaking over the fence of a lumberyard on a Sunday to steal a bag of cement – she paid for it the next day when they were open – or recounting how her cat nestled next to her and kept her company as she lay on the floor after a fall she couldn’t get up from, Carol invited readers into her life, past and present. "And readers responded. Her daughter Karen Kittelson said people would often stop Carol in public to let her know they read the column. Others wrote letters. After writing about the death of her cat, Tons of Fun, in 2012, Carol was surprised to receive condolences from strangers, Karen said. 'She felt like she was a part of something bigger than herself writing (the column),' Karen said. 'She loved to notoriety she got from that.'”

Brendan O'Meara takes horse racing neophytes and serious fans of "the sport of kings" on a memorable journey through the six special weeks of summer that were the 2009 thoroughbred racing season in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Weaving the threads of four main players - a senior race track executive, a Hall of Fame trainer, a top jockey and one very exceptional horse - he captures the inherent tensions and glories in the fabric of one extraordinary season, when a uniquely talented and fast filly - Rachel Alexandra - took center stage in her quest for greatness. O'Meara deftly guides the reader through the backstretch barns, training track, jockeys' room, executive offices, clubhouse, saddling paddock and down the homestretch as the events of one very special summer played out on American racing's most beautiful and historic stage.

Eloquent Tale of a Famous Track and One of Its Most Famous Stars

A riveting tale of the inner workings of America's most famous race track, and the campaign leading up to the memorable 2009 Woodward. Focusing on NYRA's Charlie Hayward, trainer Nick Zito, jockey Calvin Borel, and, of course, the incomparable Rachel Alexandra, this story gives readers a behind the scenes look at the logistics and politics of running a race track and how much effort goes into setting up and publicizing these races. Mr. O'Meara chronicles the background stories of all these racing icons and weaves their stories together during the six weeks of that famous summer racing meet. Beautifully written and compelling. I was there and saw her win, and these last chapters totally captured the chilling suspense of that race and the happy chaos that ensued. A must read if you love racing and/or if you love Rachel Alexandra.

A Great Book on A Strange Time

I grew up in the coal regions of NE Pennsylvania, and thought I knew something of the Molly Maguires and their struggles against the coal barons of the mid and late 19th century. I evidently did not know anywhere near as much as I thought I did

=== The Good Stuff ===

* Mark Bulik has done his homework. He traces the Molly Maguires from their rise in the counties of Ireland, and directly relates the struggles of Pennsylvania coal miners against mine owners to the plight of Irish tenant farmers and absentee landlords. .The degree of similarity of their tales is amazing.

* For those readers like myself, who are primarily interest in the mining history of the anthracite regions of Pennsylvania, there is plenty in the book to make it a worthwhile read. It built on some of the facts I already knew, including the often-contentious relationship between the miners, mine owners and railroads, and how each had a turn being in the proverbial driver’s seat.

* Bulik is at his best when describing the more human side of the struggles. He captures the futility of a miner working all year, and because of the company store system, actually owing money to his employer. We see the ability of the coal companies to directly affect the health and well-being of a black-listed “troublemaker”, and of course the mine superintendent who disappears on a dark road one evening.

* I learned much from the book. As an example, I always assumed the “Mummers” were a bunch of guys that liked string bands and going to parades in lavish costumes. I never realized their connection to the Irish labor organizations, their violent past, or their true origin. Fascinating stuff.

* While the book is “academic quality” in its research and references, the writing style is easy to read and not the convoluted 200 word sentences that seem to be a requirement of “serious, academic” non-fiction.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* Bulik’s topic is the Molly Maguires, not the labor struggles of Pennsylvania. As a result, a good portion of the book, maybe one third, is a journey through the history of Ireland and its secret organizations. And to be honest, this part of the book was hard to follow, and to keep straight the roles and tactics of various Irish organizations. And I never did quite understand the transitions of these organizations from Ireland to the US. There were groups of the name names, but it was unclear the exact relationship, if any, to the original Irish factions.

* Some of the book was a bit repetitive. I started to lose patience with the phrase “dressed in women’s clothing” when describing the Irish mobs enforcing the discipline of the various secret societies. I got the point after the first twenty times it was mentioned.

* Bulik avoids making conclusions. The book details much of the individual acts of the Molly Maguires and their associates, but stops short of analyzing the results. Did they ultimately benefit or cost the average miner? Were they responsible for the decline of the coal companies and rise of the railroads as the true power brokers? Were any of their violent tactics justifiable? Did the combative nature of the United Mine Workers and later unions build on the Molly Maguires, or were they a dead end? To me, these are the fascinating parts of the story, and Bulik gives them glancing coverage.

I enjoyed the book, and would recommend it to anyone with even a passing curiosity about the struggles of Irish labor unions and secret societies and/or the coal mining struggles of 19th century NE PA. My personal preference would have been to slightly shift the focus of the book more of an economic analysis, but the author certainly gets to choose his topic. I found the book to be an enjoyable read, and looked forward to picking up the book.

The Irish Roots of Molly Maguires

Well researched book on the history of secret groups in Ireland in the early decades of the 19th century, among them a group named the Molly Maguires. However, if you are expecting details on the Molly trials and executions in the 1870s you should look elsewhere. Loving Michael

Although the book was extremely interesting it was too much of a romantic fictional novel than sounding of the real truth because it is very graphic and sexually charged. Read at your own risk, but I was fully immersed in this book it was very intriguing.

I think it really happened, BUT...

This book is not written like a novel or a fiction. It is written as if someone is really, truly, honestly trying to tell her story. It's like a journal, or a diary in a way. And anyone that read the book from cover to cover KNOWS it is not just about her escapades with Michael, but about the work she was really involved in for children. The book is definitely sexually graphic at times, and I literally can't decide if that makes it more believable or more unbelievable.....? I believe her story. The content is rich, and moving. I'm sure she had to fill in a couple details, but I haven't read a "true story" book where the author didn't have to fill some time/memory gaps. I believe her.
Which leads me to the BUT in my title. I've read a lot of MJ books. This story fills in yet another puzzle piece of who he really was. However if THIS book is true, two other things are true:

1. No one knew who Michael Jackson really was. Not his family. Not his closest friends. Not his bodyguards. What they "Knew"was what side of himself he showed them. Which changed from person to person. That is frightening to me. Because if this book here is true, it makes everything, absolutely everything we've heard about him (yes even the child molestation accusations) more true. Whose to say it is not? Everybody is convinced based on their opinions reading or watching videos on Michael, or their personal interaction with him for X number of months or years, that they can speak for him. Mind you there are several personality traits that are consistent no matter whose book you read. But you think you can truly say what he will and will not do based on how he made you feel? Not so. Which leads to my second point.

2. Michael didn't seem to want anyone to know who he really was. Sadly, Michael had a way of making you think you really knew him. And that you were his best friend or the only one his could really be himself with. This is partly not his fault, he had such a natural charisma to him, and he genuinely was hungry for friendship and love. But let's not be naive to think he did not know how to maneuver people places and things to work best for him. I'm not saying he's not a good person. I'm saying let's not make any scenario impossible to be true, because he was a very complex conflicted person.

All said, I don't think Ms. Vernon entirely, ENTIRELY cares whether or not we believe her story. And that's good! Honestly even though I'm utterly shocked this book is not some kind of best seller or being flooded with media attention just off her claims, I see this book as some kind of release for her. This was a hard and incredible experience to have gone through in private. Thank you for sharing it with us. Worth the read.

Book is Not True and Author is Rude

Was Expecting Something else. However, I don't believe a word that she says and she should state that this is a fantasy instead of promoting it like it's the gospel truth. It should be placed with Erotica because I wasn't expecting that. There was nothing interesting about it. And it was poorly written.

If you are looking for some soft core porn this is your book. I don't believe any of the details in the book. Perhaps they met but I doubt any of these things ever happened with Michael. For those that knew him would never believe any of this stuff. The pictures that she took, there are none with them together. However, if you like erotica with Michael Jackson as the star, perhaps you will like this book. If you want something based on reality, then leave this book alone. It was horrible. Absolutely horrible.

Shame on the author and for Miravella, some people aren't going to like your work. Get over it and stop complaining about it here. It is the mark of a pure amateur. Your English is not that great either. I saw your comments on another poster's review and it was rude of you. I highly suggest you stop lashing out at reviewers. Amazon is not the place for that.

I recently read Concealed Carry…Pause, and I found it to be an outstanding read. I am an NRA Pistol instructor and teach classes for Illinois concealed carry so I have spent a lot of time in this arena. I have taken handgun training and taught it. I have read books and watched videos from some of the giants in the defensive handguns field
Through it all I have never looked at the subject the way Mr. Ziebel has, that is, from the perspective of the student.
His journey through the process is detailed and accurate. He addresses firearm selection, training, safety, as well as a myriad of other important issues. He also addresses that there are both legal and moral issues to be considered with regards to concealed carry.

Written in a easily assimilated style, reading CONCEAL CARRY; PAUSE is a surprisingly enjoyable experience and one every American should make the effort to do, so they can learn about the moral, societal and personal challenges and responsibilities for those who choose to conceal carry.

Discernment and responsibility are often left out of the decision process. Main-stream media and Hollywood have somehow skewed reality. A 100 page book written with intimate expressions of “now that I can - should I?” Dr. Ziebell shares his own analysis of concealed carry reasoning, and considerations. During this journey he has also documented the mental uncertainties of “if this happens- then what?” and “If I defend myself, am I willing to have a lifetime of legal problems?”

William John Wills (1834 – 1861) was a British surveyor who also trained for a while as a surgeon. Expected a history on the exploration of Australia. This was a father's remembrance of his son. Guess I wanted more facts and dates and history. Also the dated writing style was hard to follow. Another lesson that you have to check authors and publishing dates before you order.

"...clarifying the world as it is today."

This pamphlet by Lenin was first published 90 years ago in the midst of World War I and on the eve of the Russian revolution.

In this work Lenin sets out to achieve two things; first, to give a concise and scientific explanation of the nature of Imperialism and, secondly, to debate the ideas of influential and long time German Social Democratic Party leader Karl Kautsky who, under the pressure of war helped to lead the capitulation of the majority of his party to the side of the German ruling class.

Advocates for social change familiar with arguments on the "left" blaming the cause of the today's ills on various forms of globalisation, - which is meant to represent a more aggressive and rapacious form of imperialism - will find Lenin's polemic against Kautsky invaluable.

Lenin presents a more than convincing case that what we see today is no more than the normal workings of imperialism and therein lays the source of the problem

Taking in Lenin's five principal features of imperialism starting from the first chapters is essential to understanding his discussion with Kautsky near the end of pamphlet. In fact, it goes a long way to clarifying the world as it is today.

This is the second book I've read by Lenin. This one's short, invective, and theoretically sweet. Could a Marxist ask for more...?

In this book, Lenin is exploring the contradictions inherent in 18th century capitalism, and the resolution capitalism seeks, within its own structures, to resolve the contradiction - or, the negation of the negation - which equals Imperialism. For Lenin, the increased concentration of the means of production, by those who `win' on the `free market' (even if winning means cheating and free market is a misnomer) will rise to a monopoly position. Lenin of course seems spot on about this observation, and this view is now generally accepted, hence trust busting, heavy state regulation, the requirement for too big to fail intervention, etc. Monopoly is a stage of capitalism, we've come to accept it, and Lenin chose to fight against it.

Lenin believes, again rightfully so, that members of an industrial and productive monopoly will begin to sit on the board of directors, intermingle with, and holds strong ties, with monopoly banks, or those that garner profit via `Finance Capital.' Again, this is no surprise today. If you analyze who sits on the board of most of Wall Street's banks, along with GE, Lockheed Martin, Shell, etc, you'll find the same names cropping up. Thus, there is no real democracy in this `free market,' there is influence and oligarchy. A financial oligarchy to be precise.

This oligarch will then be sure to guarantee that finance capital works in its interest, and prevents up-and-comers, from usurping their position, or even damaging their position, as the newest Monopoly Man. Moreover, whereas the Capitalism of Marx's period was obsessed with exporting commodities, once all colonies are fully colonized, and the territory is fully seized by the state, finance capital enters through the back door - hell maybe even the front, sometimes armed (i.e., with the state police, or US military on its side) - to cease exporting commodities, and begin to export capital. Capital will serve as the catalyst for production in the colony, where the colony will begin to do the exporting of raw materials, as backed by finance capital from a hegemon (albeit Lenin doesn't use this term), and ship the resources back to the hegemon, while paying interest on the finance capital lent to it. Thus, Imperialism is what follows successful colonization. Again, check out what the US was doing in Latin America after WWII, and the Middle East now, and it's hard to deny Lenin's claims.

There is a new development though in Capitalism, a negation of imperialism if you will. Now the oligarch doesn't just shift from board to board acting in its own interest, but it shifts from board, to board, to regulation agency, to seat in congress, to cabinet position in the White House, etc, using all these various outlets to act in the interest of monopoly capital. This is now known as the "revolving door" phenomena in Washington. Henry Paulson goes from Goldman Sachs, to Secretary of Treasury, to a private closed door meeting with Wall Street's oligarchy, constantly acting in the interest of finance capital, to name one example. Of course I doubt any of this would surprise Lenin, and it shouldn't surprise anyone else either, only offend them.

Brief Summary and Contemporary Debate

The durability of Lenin's Imperialism no doubt owes as much to the stature of the man as to the accomplishment of the work itself. Lenin drew a distinction between the contemporary (late 18th, early 19th century) imperialism of the European great powers and pre-Capitalist imperialism. "Thus, the beginning of the twentieth century marks the turning point at which the old capitalism gave way to the new, at which the domination of capital in general made way for the domination of finance capital." He argued that monopoly had become the inexorable result of the capitalist system, with the concentration of production into vertically integrated enterprises. Moreover, he argued that the banks had come to play a central role in this new system, "instead of being modest intermediaries they become powerful monopolies having at their command almost the whole of the money capital of all the capitalists...". The financiers and the industrialists had now fused into a complex in which the means of production were socialized but the profits remained private.

This pattern of capitalist development within the state, Lenin argued, was also repeated at the international level. "The supremacy of finance capital over all other forms of capital means the rule of the rentier and of the financial oligarchy; it means the crystallization of a small number of financially "powerful" states from among all the rest." This system was predicated on the export of capital by the great imperialist nations, especially Britain. As financiers in the metropolis sought ever-higher returns, they exported capital across the empire, maintaining peripheral states in subjugation via a system of debenture. Moreover, as the imperialist nations of Western Europe had finally carved up the known world into their respective spheres of interest, the only means by which an imperial power could expand its domain was at the expense of another. Indeed, this is one of the frequently cited explanations for the outbreak of WWI.

What insight does Lenin's work provide for us in the contemporary world? While contemporary Marxists remain enthusiastic about the notion of a periphery of nations held in subjugation by a neo-imperialist center (e.g. Noam Chomsky, (2003), Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance, Metropolitan Books), America's categorical shift from creditor to debtor nation represents an awkward empirical anomaly for this theory. However, one does not have to adopt a socialist perspective to be critical of empire; the liberal critique is well presented in the work of Jennifer Pitts (2005) A Turn to Empire: The Rise of Imperial Liberalism in Britain and France, Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press.
