Dr. Siegfried Kra’s childhood memoir recalls the last days of a vanished world, that of the Free State of Danzig between the world wars, when aristocrats and merchants, Jews, Poles and Germans mingled in a climate of prosperity charged with uncertainty and change. It is 1932, the eve of Hitler’s rise to the Chancellory, and the eve of Siegfried Kra’s sixth birthday. But Berlin seems a world away and everything is right in the Kra household. His parents are scions of Danzig society. His father is a wealthy businessman equally at home with Jews, Germans, and Polish nobility. His mother is a lovely socialite who throws lavish parties in their stately home. Siegfried has a devoted governess and a new German shepherd puppy. But the clouds hanging over Germany inexorably reach Danzig, subtle at first like a harmless spring rain, then swift as a winter storm. Siegfried’s trusted governess, a young woman of noble but impoverished birth, embarks on a project to make him a proper German by enlisting him in the Nazi Youth. Siegfried eagerly obliges, finding the militant organization more exciting than the Jewish Maccabee club. His father too at first cooperates with the Nazi regime, striking a profitable deal to ship coal for the Germans. And when Siegfried suffers a life-threatening fever his family takes him to a specialist in Berlin, where he is cursed by a nurse for being Jewish and cared for by a Nobel laureate doctor. One night Hitler and his entourage enter the hotel where the Kras are staying. Mistaking Siegfried for an Aryan, Hitler pats him on the head and says, “Good German boys should not be awake at such an hour.” The photo of Siegfried with the Fuhrer appears in the papers, leading to the Kras being ostracized by the Jewish community back home. Finally, in 1938, after years of trying to accommodate himself to the new regime, Siegfried’s father buys tickets on the Queen Mary. But the anti-Jewish laws have now reached Danzig and the German invasion is only a year away. The Kras are put under house arrest, their governess a spy whom they dare not fire. Only due to Mr. Kra’s shrewdness and instinct for action and the aid of their neighbor, Prince Brandenburg, a libertine and friend of Rudolph Hess, are they able to commandeer a boat through the harbor, past the German patrol, to safe waters in the North Sea. Twilight in Danzig is an important addition to pre-Holocaust literature and a unique chronicle of a tragic end of an era, both of high European Jewish culture and the League of Nations experiment that was the Free State of Danzig.

Had the editing been better, it would have gotten the full five stars from me.

Our Book began in the year 1932. Siegfried Kra was about to reach the age of six. Though Siegfried was a Jewish child, his father, Henry, was a famous industrialist which gave the boy a privileged status. With an important father and lots of money, Siegfried had a governess, Fraulein Marlow. He loved his parents, but they had often been busy being attending parties and doing business (mostly involving coal).
Fraulein Marlow came from a noble but impoverished family and was devoted to her charge; however, she also belonged to the Nazi Party and was scheming to convert Siegfried. Unknown to the parents, the governess took the boy to Nazi meetings and encouraged him to join the German Youth group (that Siegfried imagined to be like the Boy Scouts).
While out with his parents at various times, Siegfried witnessed several terrible things happen to people he knew, simply because they had been Jewish. So when the “Brownshirts” began forming a group during an opera they had been attending, Siegfried pointed them out to his father – who immediately got his family out. Siegfried and his parents watched the horrific beatings from outside, flat on the grass, and being quiet as possible.
**** FOUR STARS! My synopsis only gives a small glimpse into Siegfried Kra’s young life in Danzig. Over half of the book deals with events around the year 1932. Adolf Hitler was on the rise to the Chancellery. By the year 1938, the Nazification of Danzig was completed and Siegfried’s father had finally realized that he had to get his family out of Danzig before they joined the list of rapidly growing casualties. Siegfried details how they managed to escape the Gestapo.
This autobiography is a must for history buffs. The only real flaw of this book is the poor editing, especially toward the beginning. Most of the author’s childhood had been spent daydreaming of becoming a Captain someday. Yet when a doctor saved his life, Siegfried changed his mind about what he wanted to be. (On a side note: It was during the trip to the doctor that Siegfried’s family met Hitler and, not knowing the family to be Jewish, Hitler patted the boy on his head, spoke to Siegfried, and shook hands. Reporters caught it on camera. When it appeared in the newspaper, his family was ostracized from the Jewish community. This too, is detailed.)
Most publishers know that I do not review non-fiction books, due to what I see and hear about during my job at a local hospital. I read to escape real life and to have a “happily ever after” ending; however, I made an exception for this book because (while scanning the inside) it was well written and seemed very interesting. I am now very happy that gave this book a chance. I found it to be enthralling. Had the editing been better, it would have gotten the full five stars from me. ****

Don't miss this
By Gary A. Wilson, PhD
Right up front, I know Siegfried Kra. He is my friend and tennis partner. I thought I knew him well, but did not realize until I read "Twilight in Danzig: A Privileged Jewish Childhood During the Third Reich" just what a life he had as a young boy. This true story is told through the childlike, naive, but mature eyes of a young boy, whose family, because of their wealth and friendship with the nobility of Danzig, is buffered against the rising power of Hitler. I was immediately drawn into this fascinating story. You will be on the edge of your seat as you want to shout out to his proud and misled father "leave Danzig now while your son and wife are still alive". Siegfried is horribly tricked by his governess to join the youth supporters of Hitler because it is much more fun than the Jewish youth group his parents think he is still attending. He discovers, with shame, just how wrong he is. He severs his ties to Hitler and his governess, but because of his age, cannot do much to correct his wrongful involvement. The story of this family is unique due to the great wealth they had. It adds another dimension to the personal hardships and loss suffered by many at the hands of the Third Reich. No Jew was safe during this period. You will not be able to put the book down as you read how they finally attempt to leave Danzig and their privileged life. I highly recommend this book. If you don't read it you are missing a treasure.

He has an amazing memory for events and dialogue apparently
By James Hall
The author repeatedly substitutes "smirked" for "smiled" and I guess I felt the same way. He has an amazing memory for events and dialogue apparently. But the point is the book is another work about "jews" suffered from the very beginning and rich jews suffered greatly but quite a bit later. Wow. This is not deserving of a place on the shelves of really important holocaust literature.
His mother meets a man who claims to have been a guide for the American Forces aiding Kolchak. Historians shiver in the background! That is in a word incredible. Kolchak, of course, was in Siberia and most of the "germans" there were former members of the Austrian army.
My wife was a three year old in Danzig. They, unfortunately, did not have as a neighbor Prince Von und Zu who was a friend of Rudolph Hess (?) and were forced to scrounge their way to orphanages in eastern Germany for 4 years.
If you want a real picture of life for German Jews, read Victor Klemperer. He was intelligent enough to realize the value of recording actual life events and relationships forGerman Jews. Of course, he was not rich. If you buy this, see if you can get a credit to return it now.
Whoops, just discovered that Kra lives in the USA...so it changes my forgiving acceptance of the very simplistic use of English, which I had thought was due to a mechanical translation on Google. So, since it seems like perhaps a ten year old writing, I guess it might be valuable to a ten year old reader. Not as bad as I thought apparently.
If you seek an excellent account of what life was like later in the war for a Jewish boy, I recommend The Diary of Dawid Sierakowiak who experienced an unprivileged and much more common life than did the good Dr Kra.
