Twilight in Danzig: A Privileged Jewish Childhood During the Third Reich, by Siegfried Kra M.D.

Dr. Siegfried Kra’s childhood memoir recalls the last days of a vanished world, that of the Free State of Danzig between the world wars, when aristocrats and merchants, Jews, Poles and Germans mingled in a climate of prosperity charged with uncertainty and change. It is 1932, the eve of Hitler’s rise to the Chancellory, and the eve of Siegfried Kra’s sixth birthday. But Berlin seems a world away and everything is right in the Kra household. His parents are scions of Danzig society. His father is a wealthy businessman equally at home with Jews, Germans, and Polish nobility. His mother is a lovely socialite who throws lavish parties in their stately home. Siegfried has a devoted governess and a new German shepherd puppy. But the clouds hanging over Germany inexorably reach Danzig, subtle at first like a harmless spring rain, then swift as a winter storm. Siegfried’s trusted governess, a young woman of noble but impoverished birth, embarks on a project to make him a proper German by enlisting him in the Nazi Youth. Siegfried eagerly obliges, finding the militant organization more exciting than the Jewish Maccabee club. His father too at first cooperates with the Nazi regime, striking a profitable deal to ship coal for the Germans. And when Siegfried suffers a life-threatening fever his family takes him to a specialist in Berlin, where he is cursed by a nurse for being Jewish and cared for by a Nobel laureate doctor. One night Hitler and his entourage enter the hotel where the Kras are staying. Mistaking Siegfried for an Aryan, Hitler pats him on the head and says, “Good German boys should not be awake at such an hour.” The photo of Siegfried with the Fuhrer appears in the papers, leading to the Kras being ostracized by the Jewish community back home. Finally, in 1938, after years of trying to accommodate himself to the new regime, Siegfried’s father buys tickets on the Queen Mary. But the anti-Jewish laws have now reached Danzig and the German invasion is only a year away. The Kras are put under house arrest, their governess a spy whom they dare not fire. Only due to Mr. Kra’s shrewdness and instinct for action and the aid of their neighbor, Prince Brandenburg, a libertine and friend of Rudolph Hess, are they able to commandeer a boat through the harbor, past the German patrol, to safe waters in the North Sea. Twilight in Danzig is an important addition to pre-Holocaust literature and a unique chronicle of a tragic end of an era, both of high European Jewish culture and the League of Nations experiment that was the Free State of Danzig.

Had the editing been better, it would have gotten the full five stars from me.
By Detra Fitch
Our Book began in the year 1932. Siegfried Kra was about to reach the age of six. Though Siegfried was a Jewish child, his father, Henry, was a famous industrialist which gave the boy a privileged status. With an important father and lots of money, Siegfried had a governess, Fraulein Marlow. He loved his parents, but they had often been busy being attending parties and doing business (mostly involving coal).

Fraulein Marlow came from a noble but impoverished family and was devoted to her charge; however, she also belonged to the Nazi Party and was scheming to convert Siegfried. Unknown to the parents, the governess took the boy to Nazi meetings and encouraged him to join the German Youth group (that Siegfried imagined to be like the Boy Scouts).

While out with his parents at various times, Siegfried witnessed several terrible things happen to people he knew, simply because they had been Jewish. So when the “Brownshirts” began forming a group during an opera they had been attending, Siegfried pointed them out to his father – who immediately got his family out. Siegfried and his parents watched the horrific beatings from outside, flat on the grass, and being quiet as possible.

**** FOUR STARS! My synopsis only gives a small glimpse into Siegfried Kra’s young life in Danzig. Over half of the book deals with events around the year 1932. Adolf Hitler was on the rise to the Chancellery. By the year 1938, the Nazification of Danzig was completed and Siegfried’s father had finally realized that he had to get his family out of Danzig before they joined the list of rapidly growing casualties. Siegfried details how they managed to escape the Gestapo.

This autobiography is a must for history buffs. The only real flaw of this book is the poor editing, especially toward the beginning. Most of the author’s childhood had been spent daydreaming of becoming a Captain someday. Yet when a doctor saved his life, Siegfried changed his mind about what he wanted to be. (On a side note: It was during the trip to the doctor that Siegfried’s family met Hitler and, not knowing the family to be Jewish, Hitler patted the boy on his head, spoke to Siegfried, and shook hands. Reporters caught it on camera. When it appeared in the newspaper, his family was ostracized from the Jewish community. This too, is detailed.)

Most publishers know that I do not review non-fiction books, due to what I see and hear about during my job at a local hospital. I read to escape real life and to have a “happily ever after” ending; however, I made an exception for this book because (while scanning the inside) it was well written and seemed very interesting. I am now very happy that gave this book a chance. I found it to be enthralling. Had the editing been better, it would have gotten the full five stars from me. ****

Don't miss this
By Gary A. Wilson, PhD
Right up front, I know Siegfried Kra. He is my friend and tennis partner. I thought I knew him well, but did not realize until I read "Twilight in Danzig: A Privileged Jewish Childhood During the Third Reich" just what a life he had as a young boy. This true story is told through the childlike, naive, but mature eyes of a young boy, whose family, because of their wealth and friendship with the nobility of Danzig, is buffered against the rising power of Hitler. I was immediately drawn into this fascinating story. You will be on the edge of your seat as you want to shout out to his proud and misled father "leave Danzig now while your son and wife are still alive". Siegfried is horribly tricked by his governess to join the youth supporters of Hitler because it is much more fun than the Jewish youth group his parents think he is still attending. He discovers, with shame, just how wrong he is. He severs his ties to Hitler and his governess, but because of his age, cannot do much to correct his wrongful involvement. The story of this family is unique due to the great wealth they had. It adds another dimension to the personal hardships and loss suffered by many at the hands of the Third Reich. No Jew was safe during this period. You will not be able to put the book down as you read how they finally attempt to leave Danzig and their privileged life. I highly recommend this book. If you don't read it you are missing a treasure.

He has an amazing memory for events and dialogue apparently
By James Hall
The author repeatedly substitutes "smirked" for "smiled" and I guess I felt the same way. He has an amazing memory for events and dialogue apparently. But the point is the book is another work about "jews" suffered from the very beginning and rich jews suffered greatly but quite a bit later. Wow. This is not deserving of a place on the shelves of really important holocaust literature.
His mother meets a man who claims to have been a guide for the American Forces aiding Kolchak. Historians shiver in the background! That is in a word incredible. Kolchak, of course, was in Siberia and most of the "germans" there were former members of the Austrian army.
My wife was a three year old in Danzig. They, unfortunately, did not have as a neighbor Prince Von und Zu who was a friend of Rudolph Hess (?) and were forced to scrounge their way to orphanages in eastern Germany for 4 years.
If you want a real picture of life for German Jews, read Victor Klemperer. He was intelligent enough to realize the value of recording actual life events and relationships forGerman Jews. Of course, he was not rich. If you buy this, see if you can get a credit to return it now.
Whoops, just discovered that Kra lives in the USA...so it changes my forgiving acceptance of the very simplistic use of English, which I had thought was due to a mechanical translation on Google. So, since it seems like perhaps a ten year old writing, I guess it might be valuable to a ten year old reader. Not as bad as I thought apparently.
If you seek an excellent account of what life was like later in the war for a Jewish boy, I recommend The Diary of Dawid Sierakowiak who experienced an unprivileged and much more common life than did the good Dr Kra.

IT'S AFRICAS LAST COLONY - BUT NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT

• On a Saharan desert strip lies a country of enormous natural riches, but whose inhabitants are destitute. Western Sahara has been torn apart by close to forty years of war, occupation and international power struggles. Half of the population lives in Algerian refugee camps. But the world turns a blind eye.

The forgotten conflict is closely linked to all of us - we literally have it in our bodies. Western companies buy Sahrawi phosphate, fish and fruit from the Moroccan occupiers, in breach of UN resolutions.

• Investigative reporters Fredrik Laurin and Lars Schmidt have visited refugee camps and presidential palaces, met with activists and the UN-envoy, and travelled through endless deserts in search of answers.

They show how a small elite controls both the fishing and vegetable industries, and how Swedish and international companies are deeply involved in the exploitation of Western Sahara. Using isotope analysis, they follow the phosphate from the Bou Craa mine to the aisles of our supermarkets.

• Will the Sahrawis ever get their freedom? Or are those who profiteer from the occupation too powerful?

Eye opening book for me
By Karin Lib
This is a book that everyone should read. This year I am trying to read around the world, and I had no idea that Western Sahara was a country, I thought it was a region. This book, although not an easy read, has a lot of information on the country and its difficulties. Western Sahara was originally a Spanish Colony, until the UN declared that its people the Saharwis had the right to self-determination, expecting the Spanish to transition the country to its people, and allow them to vote by referendum. This was in 1965, and the people of Western Sahara are still waiting., even though they tried to push the Spanish out militarily. Instead, the Spanish gave the country to Morocco and Mauritania. The Saharwis were able to will a small amount of the country back from Mauritania, but it was then taken away by Morocco. Morocco exploits the resources of the country (which are abundant), pushed its people into refugee camps in Algeria, where most of the people are malnourished, and the world turns a blind eye. Everyone seems to be afraid to push Morocco to give the people of Western Sahara their freedom (and it shows how weak the UN is).

Rethinking the Good: Moral Ideals and the Nature of Practical Reasoning (Oxford Ethics Series), by Larry S. Temkin

In choosing between moral alternatives -- choosing between various forms of ethical action -- we typically make calculations of the following kind: A is better than B; B is better than C; therefore A is better than C. These inferences use the principle of transitivity and are fundamental to many forms of practical and theoretical theorizing, not just in moral and ethical theory but in economics. Indeed they are so common as to be almost invisible. What Larry Temkin's book shows is that, shockingly, if we want to continue making plausible judgments, we cannot continue to make these assumptions.

Temkin shows that we are committed to various moral ideals that are, surprisingly, fundamentally incompatible with the idea that "better than" can be transitive. His book develops many examples where value judgments that we accept and find attractive, are incompatible with transitivity. While this might seem to leave two options -- reject transitivity, or reject some of our normative commitments in order to keep it -- Temkin is neutral on which path to follow, only making the case that a choice is necessary, and that the cost either way will be high. Temkin's book is a very original and deeply unsettling work of skeptical philosophy that mounts an important new challenge to contemporary ethics.

"... [A] great work of philosophy... both groundshaking and crafted with near-perfect precision... one of the most important works in ethics to appear in recent decades, sure to be studied closely by philosophers and non-philosophers alike for decades to come... [a] brilliant and exciting book." --Melinda Roberts, Analysis

"Larry Temkin's monumental book Rethinking the Good is by far the most resourceful and penetrating investigation into the various aspects of the value of outcomes to date."
-- Ingmar Persson, Law, Ethics, and Philosophy

"A real tour de force..." --Véronique Munoz-Dardé, The Journal of Moral Philosophy

"...a rich and challenging work, and a profound contribution." --Richard Kraut, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

"Rethinking the Good is the most powerful challenge to our understanding of axiology and normative theory in contemporary philosophy to date. Calling it a classic or a masterpiece is an understatement: it is a true milestone with which we enter a new stage in the study of value theory."
--Oscar Horta, Law, Ethics, and Philosophy

"The most important work in choice theory and social choice in some time." --Tyler Cowen, MARGINALREVOLUTION

"Larry Temkin's magnum opus, Rethinking the Good... is unquestionably one of the grandest, most significant, and most profound works on value and practical reasoning ever written."
--Jake Ross, The Journal of Moral Philosophy

"This book is about some of the most profound issues in human life... its challenging and sophisticated arguments will be sources of insight and inspiration for anyone who reflects on them."
--Roger Crisp, Oxford University

"Rethinking the Good is a genuinely awe-inspiring achievement. ...Its discussions of a broad range of the deepest and most perplexing issues in normative ethics are unsurpassed in imaginativeness, subtlety, and rigor... Temkin's rich and brilliant book will transform our understanding of many of the most important problems in ethical theory."
-- Jeff McMahan, Oxford University

"Rethinking the Good threatens to overturn some of our most deeply entrenched beliefs about our various values and practical reasoning.... [It is] an utterly original work of philosophy, almost breath-takingly so."
--Shelly Kagan, Yale University

"It is a rich and challenging work, and a profound contribution to that part of moral philosophy that seeks a ground for decision-making in the evaluation of states of affairs."
--Richard Kraut, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews

"Larry Temkin's Rethinking the Good threatens to overturn some of our most deeply entrenched beliefs about our various values and practical reasoning. The issues that Temkin discusses are completely central to moral philosophy and beyond, and Temkin's conclusions are deeply unsettling. Indeed, I think it fair to say that they are so surprising that most people will simply assume that they must be wrong. But as Temkin painstakingly demonstrates, there are no easy solutions to the problems that he discusses--there is no way to avoid giving up something to which we are pretty deeply committed. Rethinking the Good is, in its way, an utterly original work of philosophy, almost breathtakingly so."
--Shelly Kagan, Yale University

"This book is about some of the most profound issues in human life, including our own good, and how to weigh the good of one person against that of others. Its conclusions have significant implications for the very possibility of practical rationality, and its challenging and sophisticated arguments will be sources of insight and inspiration for anyone who reflects on them."
--Roger Crisp, St. Anne's College, Oxford

"Rethinking the Good is a genuinely awe-inspiring achievement. Its discussions of a broad range of the deepest and most perplexing issues in normative ethics are unsurpassed in imaginativeness, subtlety, and rigor. On the foundational but extraordinarily difficult issue of whether our moral reasons are 'person-affecting' or impersonal in character, or whether there are reasons of both sorts that may conflict, it contains the best discussion I know of since the appearance of Parfit's seminal arguments in Reasons and Persons. Temkin's rich and brilliant book will transform our understanding of many of the most important problems in ethical theory."
--Jeff McMahan, author of The Ethics of Killing and Killing in War

A brilliant analysis of the conflicts between a number of deeply held beliefs
By Ben
Larry Temkin provides a brilliant and original analysis of the conflicts between a number of deeply held beliefs about the good, moral ideals, and practical reasoning. There appears to be no theory that can accommodate all of the beliefs we would like to hold on to -- something must go. One striking possibility is that, even if (all things considered) A is a better outcome than B, and B is better than C, C might be better than A. Temkin evaluates this and other fascinating possibilities in depth. The book is a long one, but is a lively and engaging read.

Tobie and Carl: My Life With Carl Murphy Jr., by mitzi phillips

Tobie and Carl is the story of the love - hate relationship between my mother and father. They shared a life that is certainly beyond ordinary. He was a handsome man with jet black hair. She was a blonde beauty with a Marilyn Monroe figure. Wherever they went people would point and stare as if they were movie stars. The romance started out exciting but turned into a roller coaster of physical and emotional abuse. Tobie tried to restore peace in the family by planning to kill Carl. He would cheat death more than once. Together they brought devastation to their dysfunctional family along with murder, FBI investigations and prison. Not enough? How about a high speed chase with the police leaving him paralyzed from the waist down, surely this would slow him down...right? My father could have been the Souths' greatest lawyer or even governor but chose a different path. My mother now old and gray wanted to tell the story that so many ask her about; My Life With Carl Murphy Jr.

It must have been terribly painful for Tobie and Mitzi to produce this book
By M. McCord
It must have been terribly painful for Tobie and Mitzi to produce this book. However, I am glad that they took the time and did the hard work, as well as suffering the pain, to do it.

I knew Carl for ten years, starting when we were in eighth grade together. He was the most charming person that I met in all my eighty-three years--"charming" in the sense of mesmerizing.

Men and women, young and old, good and bad, were drawn to Carl. When I knew him, he seemed to love everybody, and they loved him, despite the fact that he could be as mean as a snake and as violent as a volcano. He was generous, caring, sincerely friendly, and usually respectful toward other people.

Attempting to explain this charm, I see him as having had a strong presence. At least in his youth, he was fully himself and seemed to see other people as being fully themselves.

Halfway through the book, I almost put it aside in distaste. However, the ending made me glad that I had read on.

I absolutely love this book
By Johnny CHILDERS
I absolutely love this book. I went to school with Mitzi and Lisa and also knew Pete and Lanna but I never imagined all they endured as children. I always heard the Carl Murphy stories most of life but hearing the story from Mitzi and her mother really personalizes all the events. The ending is definitely my favorite part. Gods love and forgiveness is awesome and available to anyone who will call on His name and repent.

Just ordered two of her books, Mitzi's mom and my dad were siblings, When we were younger Mitzi and I spent time in our childhood years together but as we got older we grew apart, So excited about her new book! looking forward to reading it but yet also sad to know what she had to endure as a child growing up in that abusive environment! Love you Mitzi!

Solitary - Without the Confinement: A Rider's Life-Changing Experience During the 2013 Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge, by Steve Briscoe

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge-an annual endurance ride exceeding eight thousand miles. Those who step out and accept the challenge are a very small percentage of the riding community. Some who attempt it do not succeed. Hoka Hey is a call to action and is an Oglala Lakota Native American Indian term that translates to "It's a good day to die" That doesn't mean those who ride the Challenge are eager to die. What it does mean is that those who ride should live lives of honor, integrity, compassion, and respect so if they fall in battle, they will leave a positive legacy to family and friends. The majority of this book spans twelve days, but in reality, it spans a lifetime of failures, accomplishments, regrets, desires, and fears. I took this Challenge to prove something to myself, but what I discovered was something I did not know was lost.

Entertaining and Informative. A must read for a biker or for the "Better Half" of the biker.
By Mark Childers
I started and finished this book fast as it was difficult to put down. Steve is a good storyteller and is able to put into words what this biker (me) has thought and wondered about but could not adequately explain. "Solitary - Without the Confinement" is a great account of the authors experience in the Hoka Hey Challenge but also explains the actions and thought process of many bikers out there, at least in my opinion. So if you've wondered "Why did the biker do that", this book does a great job of explaining.
Obviously the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge is huge undertaking that only a small percentage of riders will ever attempt. This book describes the authors preparation, trials, experiences and emotions. If you are considering the HHMC, this book is a must. I sure wish it was around before I attempted the challenge! That being said, there is still a lot of tips for the long distance rider as well as the weekend rider. The tips, and money you will save by taking the authors advice, will cover the cost of the book many times over.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

When I grow up, I want to be like this guy...
By Dean Akey
Once I started reading Solitary - Without the Confinement by Steve Briscoe I could'nt put it down. On the surface the book appears to be about one man challenging himself but to me it was far more than that which is what I found uplifting about this book. To me, this is the story of a man who recieved a "calling" of sorts. Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” This book is the story of one man who took notice and decided to do something about it... Unfortunately, the numbers of us who do take notice and act are indeed a "small group" but those people do work miracles... To me, the underlying message here is that we all from time to time are presented with opportunities to make the world a little better.... Lucky for us, Steve and others in this "small group" noticed..... Well done

Thought provoking
By Jackie Briscoe
Such a thought provoking read. I too, started reading and couldn't put it down. Although I don't ride/drive, I have ridden on the back behind Steve plenty of times and understand why riders live to ride and ride to live. Congratulations Steve, a wonderful portrayal of a fascinating experience.

Powerful, Insightful, Eye-Opening and Remains Pertinent Today!
By Mindful Iconoclast
An extraordinary and smart book that is full of heart. Kammer is an excellent interviewer and the women who talk with him here are diverse, knowledgable, bright and often eye-opening in their gift for appreciating gender dynamics that are male-friendly. These perspectives remain too-ignored, though they merit a lot of attention. Will not just shift but radically change your appreciation of men.

Many useful ideas; could use better editing
By Thomas K. Gally
As a translator and writer who often produces English documents for readers who are not native speakers of English, I have long wrestled with the problem of how to adapt my English writing style so that it is understandable to the widest possible audience. This book offers many useful ideas and pointers for people like me: avoid ambiguous and culturally-bound expressions, anticipate how individual words will be translated by readers into their native languages, avoid sarcasm and humor, and much more. I thus recommend this book strongly.

I wish, though, that it had been more carefully edited. In my first few minutes of skimming through it, I came upon several embarrassing errors: "The shorter Oxford English Dictionary has 25,000 entries" (p. 17) should be "The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary has [some much larger number of] entries"; references to "German-English" and "Hebrew-English" dictionaries (pp. 21-22) should be to "English-German" and "English-Hebrew" dictionaries; the example sentence "an investigate trail is cold" (p. 23) must be a typo (of "an investigation trail is cold"?); examples of hyphenation usage (p. 74) are unclear because the examples appear at the ends of lines; and an example text that is described as being in a mono-spaced font (p. 82) is in fact in a proportional font. Such mistakes distract from the book's overall worth.

Weiss should practice what he preaches!
By LHL
I think the overall content of this book is good. However, after about page 124, I got so tired of his American bashing that I found myself starting to just skim the pages. Ironically, he suggests writers avoid offending readers, yet he does this to Americans throughout the book.

As an American living overseas, I am interested in improving my communications for a global audience. I realize the conventions of English in the United States are different from most of the world. That is why I wanted to read this book.

I did gain some new perspectives from the book, but I did find it interesting that the writer did not follow his own advice.

A German General on the Eastern Front: The Letters and Diaries of Gotthard Heinrici 1941-1942, by Johanne Hurter

The Eastern Front, 1941. Operation Barbarossa. Hitler’s armies advance into the Soviet Union to conquer Lebensraum in the East. Among the corps commanders is General Gotthard Heinrici, a career soldier, a highly decorated First World War veteran, who observed and recorded in his diary and letters the unprecedented harshness of the German conduct of the campaign. With remarkable candor he described his experiences at the front and the everyday lives of the troops under his command - and the appalling conditions in which the war was fought. In his writings he revealed his growing doubts about Hitler's strategy and his mounting concern as the Wehrmacht was implicated in war crimes and the first actions of the Holocaust. This selection from Heinrici’s diaries and letters, edited and with a perceptive introduction by Johannes Hürter, gives a fascinating inside view of the fighting on the Eastern Front from a commander’s perspective. It is also provides an unusual insight into the feelings, attitudes and acute anxieties of one of the Wehrmacht’s most able generals in the midst of a brutal campaign.

General Winter on the late 1941 Russian front.
By William Garrison Jr.
Sadly, this book is not a significant memoir by a WWII German general. It is what its subtitle states: "The Letters and Diaries of Gotthard Heinrici 1941-1942" when he served in the Poland & Russia invasions. Like the letters most soldiers send home to their spouses and children, they know they aren't supposed to discuss military tactics, and, if they are smart, won't besmirch their commanders -- just in case the military letter censors happen to read their letters.

Like most soldiers, Heinrici complains about the dust clouds being churned up by the soldiers marching at the advance of the column, bemoans the mosquitoes lifting from the Russian swamps, poor re-supply, and the hot summer and cold winter climates of Mother Russia: "Colonel Hofsbach, a pessimist par excellence, was even more frustrated because his son had come home with frozen legs" (p. 114).

But Heinrici's letters really don't go into analysis of battlefield campaigns -- as to how the left wing advanced at night and encircled the enemy. This book doesn't contain Heinrici's memoirs about his battle efforts.

Yes, some of Heinrici's letters contain snippets about how pesky Russian partisan-guerillas where found in swamps and "harshly dealt with", but there are no detailed accounts as to how the Germans went trampling through the swamps in some meticulous detail in locating the partisans. Living in the comfort of better dwellings in town than his troops, Heinrici grew so tired of seeing captured partisans swinging from the gallows outside his townhouse that he had them removed after a couple of days: "I tell Beutelsbzacher not to hang the partisans closer than 100m to my window. Not a pleasant view in the morning" (p.102)

Yes, Heinrici wrote a couple of sentences here and there about how poor, slovenly Jews were noticed hawking goods in their ghettos, but Heinrici left no notes about whether or not his unit rounded up Jews for extermination. While none of his writings advocated the extermination of Jews, Heinrici seemed to be of the mind that the Jews certainly needed to be regulated -- rather than be given free reign in their cities.

Who was Heinrici? What were his thoughts about political issues? Some insights are provided: he supported Hitler's Nazi-socialist economic and lebensraum advocacy.

This book is not a "unit history" item. Sadly, it doesn't rise to the lofty levels of the memoirs penned by von Manstein or von Mellenthin. The graphic battlefield exploits of "Soldat" easily beat this book.

Initially, Heinrici observed that his soldiers had little high regard for the retreating Russians. However, begrudgingly, he opined: "The Russian is very strong and fights desperately, urged on by his commissars" (p. 71).

Even by August 1941, Heinrici is "convinced that this war will last a long time" (p. 78).

General Winter finally came to the aid of the Russians, and Heinrici noted in December 1941: "We are in dire straits right now. The enemy vigorously attacks our newly won positions. Our men are extremely exhausted. And we have around minus 20C.... The situation is as bad as never before..." (p. 109). And he talks about German soldiers "self-mutilating" themselves to escape combat. And then things get worse.

On 28 Feb 1942 he meets Der Fuehrer and after long arguments convinces Hitler to tolerate a short retreat around Yukhnov to prevent German units from being surrounded by the Russians (p. 134-135).

In his last 12 May 1942 entry Heinrici wrote: "I feel miserable and exhausted....I am at the end of my thther, so discontented and frustrated, shattered, demoralized and worn out by the imbalance between expectations from above and the reality of war... Everything here is awful."

What, no index? Nope.

The first 40% of this book (55 pages) is the author's commentary about the character of Heinrici and analyzing his diary notes. Only the last 50% contains actual quotations from Heinrici's diaries and letters to his wife. And 10% for "notes."

This book is definitely more about Henrici's observations as to how the war impacted upon himself, his soldiers and the Russians, rather than about combat tactics. An okay read.

This German General Has a Great Guardian Angel
By Edmund P. Leigh
It has always been a mystery how a country like the Soviet Union could lose 25 -27 M people and still win a war. France collapsed in June of 1940. Why didn't the Soviet Union which endured unbelievable losses and destruction on most of its populated area ? This book by Johanne Hurter on the diary of Col General Gothard Heinrici answers many of the questions of how the Russians under Stalin's rule were able to come back after receiving what many observers considered a series of "Knock Out Blows" by the Germans and its allies 1941 and also in 1942.

Heinrici provides several answers with an examination of the Russian character as he read about in Tolstoy. The general kept asking the question "Why don't the Soviets collapse like the French did ? To paraphrase his answer to this question... the Russian does not display initiative in his pursuits. He is obsessively stubborn when he is a herd of others and fights to the death, at others times though he will beat to death his commissars who threaten to shoot any soldier who does not charge into the German lines which is tantamount to suicide since the usual German line makes maximum use of machine guns to destroy human wave attacks. (Remember the German squad was built around the MG-42 machine gun the fastest machine gun in the world then and the basis for the current American machine gun today.) The Russian can either be incredible tough or they give up unexpectedly. They are completely unpredictable. The Soviet soldier will also pretend to be dead and let a German soldier pass by and then shoot him in the back. After few such incidents the Germans finds it necessary to shoot all soldiers laying on the ground who appear to be dead. The Russian soldier is amazing in that he can live off very little and still keep fighting. A field kitchen which the Germans had and was dependant on was virtually unknown in the Russian. The Russian could live off grass, tree bark and pine cones if he needed to witched awed the Germans. In short, the Soviet soldier was full of contradictions and at times appear indestructible in forbidden deep forests and swamps where mechanized German vehicles could not enter. Some Russians fight to the death while others surrender readily. No pattern could be seen. The Soviets appear very smart or very stupid. They are an enigma and unpredictable. And a terrifying opponent taken as a whole.

The Germans are also amazed how well-armed the Soviets are. The Germans invade with only 3000 tanks on June 22, 1941 and by spring of 1942 they have destroyed 35,000 tanks. The Communists and Stalin has indeed mercilessly industrialized the Soviet Empire since the 1917 Red Revolution under Lenin and Trosky and in 1928 under Stalin. These Athiestic Communist madmen have made the Soviet Union an arms weapons manufacturing and storehouse while starving millions of kulacks, former Tsarist civil servants, Russian Othodox priests, landowners and other so called enemies of the state to advance the cause of Communism to make their goal - World Revolution. They are the enablers of Karl Marx's vision & it is an evil one. Even though the Germans capture 6 million POW's and use 1 million of these unfortuates as Hiwis to fight Stalin it is not enough and the Germans eventually lose the war in 1945. Even at Stalingrad an estimated 50,000 Hiwis support the Germans in that cauldron and when they are captured are treated as traitors and are executed immediately. No Stalin has a cruel view of former Soviet soldiers. To him they do not exist but I disgress....back to the Heinrici's dairy.

This is excellent history written in a series of letters by Col General Henrici who by his own account dodges death on a daily basis in the terrible defensive ordeal known as the Battle of Moscow. The pictures are excellent and about the only shortcoming I see is the lack of maps. But the book is well edited and everything is footnoted where the text came from. Very professional looking and a great addition to what the German high Command was thinking in this time period.

What is also interesting is that when he meets face-to-face with Hitler, Heinrici admits that his "No Retreat Order" given in December of 1941 in order to prevent a panic similar to what the French Army in 1813 experienced was the correct choice to make as a general rule but in specifically in his area of combat he believes his troops should have been allowed to retreat to a better location and that they just managed to survive by incredible tenacity, small unit leadership and luck. Everyday for months on end from December of 1941 thru April of 1942 in the area before Moscow they endured mind numbing severe cold causing massive casualties of frostbite with temperatures down to -40 C while fighting a fanatical foe of fresh troops known as Siberians who were well provided with sheep skin protection. But he does admit that the Soviets fought with fury but not smartly as they kept "missing the big picture" by not cutting the German supply line when they were close to it. Heinrici never figures out why his troops were not destroyed in the awful cauldron. The Soviets have the means to do so and there was really nothing preventing them from destroying the Main Supply Line but for some unforeseen reason the Soviets could not apply the Coup de Grace or Killing Blow. After 7 months in this onslaught Heinrici was sent to a resort to recover from this nightmare. Highest Recommendation if you want to understand the German perspective.
