Short but excellent resource

A very enjoyable and easy read by Coffey.
The book discusses lesser know saints, and the chapter on Thea Bowman is maybe the best.
Can easily be read in one sitting but worth taking time to meditate on each short chapter.
Another excellent resource from liturgical press.

Lo primero que pense al terminar el libro fue: "este es el libro que hubiera deseado escribir". Jose Benegas aborda no solo los temas como la pobreza, la vida/propiedad privada y la igualdad, aborda en profundidad uno de los temas que a mi me interesa y mucho, el hombre, la ética y su relación con la libertad. "Hágase tu Voluntad" nos enseña a dejar de ser obedientes y enfocarnos mas en la búsqueda de nuestra felicidad/libertad. Es un libro para leer varias veces, no cansa, te acompaña. Gracias Jose Benegas por haber escrito uno de los mejores libros que he leído en los últimos años. Gracias por tu pluma e intelectualidad.
Confieso que lo he leído 4 veces e invito a todos lo que lean esto a que adquieran un ejemplar ya. No se van a arrepentir.

The only edition to buy

This review is aimed more toward the Norton edition than to JANE EYRE. We all know this is a classic. Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)

As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.

Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

wuthering heights editions

Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:

A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).

1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation,
excellent introduction.

2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.

3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.

4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.

5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.

B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).

6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).

7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.

7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on the
Clarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.

8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in too
many of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.

9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

Do not miss out on this book...

You know all those 'classic' novels you read in high school? How many of them do you actually remember? Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best.

There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.

Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.

About the Author
Solomon Northup (1808 - c. 1864-1875) was an African American carpenter who was born free in Minerva, Essex County, New York, but was bound into slavery later in life for a period of 12 years. He regained his freedom in January of 1853.

Growing up in the North,I had always found it hard to imagine that slavery not only existed in this country,but flourished.Through the years,I have read many an autobiography or history book concerning slavery and thought I knew it all. And yet I was blind.
Until I read Solomon Northrup's "12 Years a Slave." Where has this book been? It is a masterpiece of history,of one man,one free man's life. A true picture of 'The Old South'.
Mr. Northrup was a free black man with a beautiful wife and two daughters living in Saratoga,NY. He was lured from his home by slave traders who specialized in the awful practice of kidnapping free black citizens and selling them into slavery. Torn from his home and family,Mr.Northrup endured the worst that can happen to a human being,and still live.
And yet,he remained fair and honest,never stooping to the level some of his white masters did.
I am not going to rewrite the book in this review because I recommend reading it for yourself. Slavery was and is a vile institution.
Solomon Northrup is my new inspiration.
This book will shock you. But you will be the better for having read it.

Extraordinary book, but there are better versions on Kindle

As slave stories go, this one is, in my view, without peer. Northup's s captivating tale -- which has gained attention because of the movie that shares the book's title -- is told in exacting detail with an easy prose. He sets the stage masterfully, describing people and places before proceeding into the narrative. Unlike works of fiction, this book is so compelling because, by all accounts, it is true. There is no polemical axe to grind, as with Uncle Tom (a novel at one point wryly referenced by Northup). Here you see both the brutality of slavery and the moments of kindness by slaves and even some slave owners. Solomon tells the story with clarity and intelligence.

The free versions on other sites I found were pretty poorly formatted, so spending a dollar for a polished version on Amazon is worthwhile, but this one is not the best of them. Granted, the book is formatted adequately, and any typographical errors in this version seem to be simple reproductions of the original.

However, the supporting material is a letdown. I read the version that includes the introduction by novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez. That introduction is borderline insulting, as it makes only a weak attempt to separate accounts with fictional elements like Roots from an authentic account like this one. Worse still, Perkins-Valdez can't resist indulging in repeatedly referencing her own recently released slave novel, even going so far as to quote herself. There are almost no historical elements to this version beyond the main book -- no mention of Northup after the book, no mention of he writer who helped him pen the book, nothing. There is more information on the writer of the introduction than there is the author. One other oddity worth mentioning: the original book's preface -- the one done by the man who helped Northup write the book -- has been curiously excised from this version too. That makes this version something less than complete.

For those looking for a better version, you might consider Twelve Years a Slave - Enhanced Edition by Dr. Sue Eakin Based on a Lifetime Project. New Info, Images, Maps, which contains a robust amount of supporting material and, better still, is right now the same cost as this version.

Awesome indeed, Please Read This Book!

I read this entire book in one day. I could not put it down. I came across it while trying to learn more about my town. I was in awe after realizing that all this occured some 15 miles from where I now live. I believe this book would make an excellent movie. The way this free black man was taken and sold into salvery is so sad and if I had not been looking into old new paper articles around the area I would have not believed this story. SO many people want to forget about the history of black people but they shouldn't. I don't think anyone can walk away after reading this book and not feel some sort of compassion for the all the souls lost to slavery.

Insightful and Moving

Henry Moscow’s biography of Thomas Jefferson recounts the story of a planter’s son who grew up to become one of America’s founding fathers.

To label Jefferson as a politician belies his accomplishments, as Moscow demonstrates. In addition to Jefferson’s considerable work as a statesman, he was a writer, astronomer, philosopher, inventor, lawyer, mathematician, botanist, and musician. He spoke five languages and founded a university as well as a political party that stands today.

But above all, this well-written book shows, he was one of the great thinkers of his time. The Declaration of Independence, the document he so eloquently penned, “helped to free a nation,” Moscow writes.

This captivating biography examines Jefferson’s life, from his humble beginnings as a lawyer, to his years as revolutionary instigator, legislator, governor, diplomat, secretary of state, vice president and president.

All of the personal aspects of Jefferson’s life are examined in detail, including his devotion to his wife and his children. The author delves into Jefferson’s complicated relationship with slave Sally Hemings, who had six children with him.

This book is a must-read not only for those who love history, but also for those who want to learn more about the man who helped introduce liberty to a fledgling nation.

and yet I felt that there was a great deal of Jefferson

As some others have commented, the book is relatively brief. and yet I felt that there was a great deal of Jefferson, the man, displayed in the writing of this book. This is not a book written for scholars intent on learning all the nuances of Jefferson's education, his involvement in the writing of the Declaration of Independence, the formation of a government, his presidency, etc. What it does present is the man's unselfishness to other people and to the nation that in the end left him bankrupt. It presents a man who suffered personal tragedies in the loss of his wife and many children due to various health issues. It also presents a man with tremendous skill in art, architecture, music and other skills that for a man of his time is hard to imagine.

This story is well told, providing for me, an intriguing glimpse of Jefferson. Well written and beautifully crafted. Where were you when I struggled through American history in high school!

It was a shock to see such striking similarities with current politics.

A little rambling but very good

Loved this book. It was like sitting with Fanny Crosby and she was telling me about the things she remembered about her life. If you are wanting more details then you may want to get a biography of her life but if you don't care to read a little rambling then I highly recommend her autobiography.

About the Author
Eugene F. Ferraro, is a prolific writer and the author of more than 15 books, and hundreds of articles. He has been involved in the study of organizational culture, workplace investigations, and compliance for over 32 years. He is board certified in both Security Management and Human Resources Management (CPP and SPHR designations respectively). He frequently speaks and trains on the topics of writing, publishing, workplace misconduct, virtuosity, and organizational ethics. He is a former U.S. Marine Corps pilot, combat flight instructor, and a graduate of the Naval Justice School. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida Institute of Technology. He is also an outdoorsman, fly fisherman, extreme hiker, and rancher. He lives with his wife and their four magnificent horses in the mountains of Colorado. Very Sweet and several brought tears to my eyes

My husband gave this lovely book to me as a gift and I read it in its entirety in several sittings. I couldn’t put it down, even knowing I had things to do. The short stories which precede each chapter are just darling. Very Sweet and several brought tears to my eyes. Many of the quotes used to support the stories are perfect and I would have gladly read more! The author has a lovely way of writing and reading his words were just delightful to my heart. My only wish is that the book was longer, but as the author indicates in his Afterword this is the first in a series. I hope that is so because I’m so looking forward to the next one…and the next one. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a heart and a desire to more deeply understand the real meaning of virtue. I will most certainly be buying this book as a gift for my special friends.

Fun to Read

I've read this little book a couple of times now. At first, I wanted to memorize all the relevant quotes that touched me. There were so many, I realized it was impossible. On second reading, I just let all of them percolate through me knowing some of the wisdom will stick. Thanks to the author for bringing this together so that the hungry soul can feast until satisfied.

He has appeared as a commentator on MSNBC and BBC radio and written for The New York Times Disunion series, The Weekly Standard, and other outlets. A graduate of Yale University, he lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with his wife, Caroline.

Robert E. Lee emerges as a great man and a great general in full

General Robert E. Lee has always stood as something of an enigma to me. I've read a lot of books about the Civil War tending to those more sympathetic to the Union, but not exclusively so. In his new biography of Lee, Jonathan Horn (The Man Who Would Not Be Washington: Robert E. Lee's Civil War and the Decision that Changed American History (Scribner, 2015, 384 pages, $28.00/12.74) presents a comprehensive, intriguing, sympathetic, and convincing picture of this most enigmatic and conflicted of Confederate generals. Forever connected to George Washington, by proximity and marriage, yet burdened by the obligations, moral and legal, thus placed on him, Lee is a fascinating, confliced man. Horn, a third of whose book consists of extensive footnotes and an exhaustive bibliograpy, has thoroughly done his work to present a full biographical picture successfully capturing Lee's huge strengths, which, as with many great men, become his greatest liabilities. This book is highly readable and useful for anyone interested in Civil War history.
R.E. Lee was the son of Revolutionary War general Light Horse Harry Lee, one of George Washington's most trusted aides and a general of slashing creativity. Because The Father of His Country had no natural children, Harry Lee became almost like a son to Washington. After the war, however, the Lee family fell into disrepute, never living up to its promise and amassing significant debts. Lee's life was further complicated, by his marriage to Mary Custis, Martha Washington's great grand-daughter. Both the Custis and Lee branches of the family led lives more dedicated to exploiting their relationships to Washington than to become productive in their own rite, thus leading to extensive problems for Robert E. Lee throughout his life and, perhaps, influencing many of his later choices. The web of responsibilities for the Custis slaves, inherited from Martha Washington, placed financial and moral burdens on Lee to support causes (slavery and secession) which he did not personally wish to do. Enjoyable and Informative Read

This book about the life of Robert E. Lee and a critical period in American history captured my interest and would not let go. Once having begun to read, putting it down became difficult because the important and interesting facts and associations just kept coming, and the author presents them with unmatched skill. First was the title, “The Man Who Would Not Be Washington.” Huh? What does Washington have to do with Robert E. Lee and how could Lee ever have been Washington? It turns out that there were many connections between the Washington family and that of Lee. But there is more to the title; Lee’s choice to abandon the union was directly entwined with Washington’s legacy as father of the union.

Like the rest of us, Lee was trapped in his slice of history. Unlike most of the rest of us, he had a chance to guide that history. What was he thinking as he faced his many challenges? Why did he and others around him do what they did at each stage? Why was J. E. B. Stuart not there when Pickett made his fateful charge at Gettysburg, for example? In fact, why was Lee at Gettysburg to start with? And on-and-on.

Was Robert E. Lee a patriot, a traitor or was he an honorable man dealing with the choices open to him and seeking only to do his duty as he saw it? Before you judge Robert E. Lee please read this book. But be warned that when you begin to read it you will not want it to end.

Let’s hope this author’s next book is out soon. History could become accessible under his pen.

Very compelling reading. A lot of interesting events nicely woven together. Very interesting reading. I could not let go of the book. Presentation was so good that I felt like watching a big screen movie. I looked at maps to follow his movements. I will read this book again. STRONGLY recommended! Now, what is Mr. Horn going to write about next?
